Barbara D. Vunetich, nee Mulliniks, 69, of Waterloo, died Sept., 2010 in Columbia. She was born Dec. 3, 1940, in Walnut Ridge Ark., the daughter of the late Roy Mulliniks and Dorothy (Mike) Feigl. Mrs. Vunetich is survived by her children, Cindy (Kurt) DePoy, John (Montana) Vunetich Jr., and Debbie (Phillip) Argus; grandchildren Corey and Brittany Argus, Brendan and Travis DePoy and Bailey Vunetich; a sister, Doris (David) Lemp; and brothers Roy (Annabelle) Mulliniks and Michael Feigl; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Vunetich Sr., and her sister, Louise "Tootie" Greer. Mrs. Vunetich was retired from the Cahokia School District. She was a former member of the Cahokia American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Visitation is Sunday, Sept. 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Tonya Lynn Ekes, nee Derossett, 42, of Renault, died Sept. 2, 2010 in Red Bud following a car accident. She was born March 12, 1968 in Belleville, the daughter of Steve Ekes and Joyce Derossett. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ekes is survived by her children, Jessica Stoner and James “Jamie” Mudd; sisters Michelle (David) Jokish and Justine Derossett; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Frieda Irene Levin, nee Gordon, 91, of East Carondelet died Sept. 2, 2010 at Red Bud Regional Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Lake Wood, the daughter of the late Alvin and Lois (Campfield) Gordon. Mrs. Levin is survived by her husband of 69 years, Elmer Levin; sons David Levin and Dennis Levin; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters Dora Johnson and Evelyn Gisher; along with nieces and nephews. Frieda was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and Altar Committee. Visitation is Sunday, Sept. 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral is Monday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia with the Rev. Frank Robert Goodwin Jr., 42, of Dupo died Sept. 3, 2010 at his residence. He was born Oct. 28, 1947 in East St. Louis. Mr. Goodwin is survived by his daughters, Mandy Goodwin and Faith Duggan; sisters Sheila (Donald) Ellis and Theresa Hunt; and a nephew, Sean Hunt. Mr. Goodwin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a captain for various barge lines and was a member of the Dupo VFW Post 6368. Visitation is Monday, Sept. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. James P. Meinhardt, 77, of Columbia, died Sept. 4, 2010. He was born March 30, 1933 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Edgar and Estelle (Yetter) Meinhardt. Mr. Meinhardt is survived by his friends Tom, Marcia, Anthony and Adam Newcom of Columbia; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Edgar, Robert Sr. and Kenneth C. Meinhardt. Mr. Meinhardt served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was the retired owner/operator of St. Louis Carnival Supply. He was a former fire chief for the Columbia Rural Fire Protection District. He spent most of his life raising race horses, was a member of the Columbia Gymnastic Association and the Columbia American Legion Post 581. Angela Dawn Gamblin-Cissell, 39, of Millstadt, died Sept. 5, 2010 at her residence. She was born March 6, 1971 in Red Bud, the daughter of Russ and Carol (nee Case) Gamblin. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gamblin is survived by her husband, Steve Cissell; step-children Stephanie (Tim) Montgomery and Greg (Rebecca) Cissell; grandchildren Hannah, Ellie, Henry and August; siblings Kim Freeman and Terry (Beth) Gamblin; and nieces and nephews, Christi (John), Danny Jr., Nathan, Zach, Jakob and Ryan. She was preceded in death by grandparents, William and Elsie Case, Milton “Whitey” and Laura Bieber; and parents-in-law, Doris and James Cissell. Angela was a microbiologist at Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis, Mo., a member of Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt, the Millstadt Civic Club, the American Society for Quality and the American Society for Brewing Chemists. Johnnie Earl Smith, 63, of Waterloo, died Sept. 8, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born March 19, 1947 in East St. Louis. He was the son of the late Vernon Otto Smith and step-son of Mary Smith. He is survived by his daughters, Aimee (Greg) Keithly, Jenny (Tommy) Shields and Emilee (Vic) Williams; sisters Gloria Fridy, Rose (Shelby) Marlow and Patti (Bruce) Boyer; and granddaughters Sophie, Ava, Alaina and Nola. Mr. Smith served three tours of duty with the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War. He was a retired carpenter and engineer with the GM&O Railroad. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. A memorial visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 for a 10 a.m. graveside service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Dorothy Adele Huffman, nee Warren, 78, of Dupo, died Sept. 9, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She was born June 8, 1932 in Ware, the daughter of the late Charles and Marie (nee Talley) Warren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Huffman; son, Charles Brimm; and brothers Jasper “Jack” Warren and Gene Warren. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Deborah Brimm of Dupo; grandchildren Chad Brimm of Dupo and Douglas (Alicia) Brimm of Collinsville; a sister, Georgia Stevens of Bunker, Mo.; aunt, Nellie Johnson of Murphysboro; and sister-in-law, Carol Warren. Dorothy was a homemaker. She was a member of the Dupo VFW Post 6368 Ladies Auxiliary, Dupo American Legion Post 485 Ladies Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star. Mark A. Weltig, 48, of Maryland Heights, Mo., died Sept. 17, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Sept. 8, 1962 in Red Bud, the son of William and Ardell Weltig of Waterloo. In addition to his parents, Mr. Weltig is survived by his wife, Ruwanganie "Ru" (nee Gunatilleke) Weltig; children Angela Weltig and Benjamin Weltig; and brothers Brian (Lori) Weltig and Craig (Lisa) Weltig. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herbert and Alma Weltig, and Stephen and Agnes Straub. Mr. Weltig was employed in computer security at the Federal Reserve System in St. Louis, Mo. Karen A. Shondy, 67, of Columbia, died Sept. 19, 2010. She was born June 29, 1943, in Belleville, the daughter of the late Hawert “Ham” and Beulah (Osterhage) Ludwig. She married Gary Shondy in 1962 in Columbia. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Shondy is survived by her children, Sherri (Dale) Vogt of Paderborn, Amy (Mike) Webster of John's Creek, Ga., and Chris (Sherry) Shondy of Lake Zurich; grandchildren Megan and Derek Vogt, Mitchell, Matthew and Jack Webster and Kate and Gavin Shondy; in-laws Earl and Edna Shondy of Millstadt; and life-time friend Janet Mueller. Mrs. Shondy was a member of Columbia Women's Club (past secretary) and was a retired project administrator at Jacob's Engineering in St. Louis, Mo. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Church of Millstadt, where she was active with the Women's Fellowship, Bell Choir and the Z-Team.
