Carl Herman Bode, 84, of Waterloo, died Aug. 17, 2010. He was born Sept. 30, 1925, the son of the late Carl W. and Elsie (Roever) Bode. Mr. Bode is survived by his daughters, Bonnie. Lauer of St. Louis, Patricia Bode of Waterloo and Debra Beck of St. Louis; sons Kenneth and Harry Bode of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Campbell) Bode; and a son, William Bode. Mr. Bode served in the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Service during World War II. He was the owner of Bode Beverages (Bode’s Sode’s) in Waterloo; a Monroe County jailer; a zoning officer, a Waterloo alderman and volunteered with the Waterloo Fire Department. Carl was a members of the Waterloo American Legion Hall and a charter member of Waterloo VFW Post 6504. Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 19, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at DeFabio Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, Aug; 20 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Bode will be buried at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the Carl Bode Memory Walk.

Ray J. Leber, 73, of Waterloo, died Aug. 18, 2010 in Waterloo. Mr. Leber was born March 26, 1937, in East. St. Louis, the son of the late Joseph Albert and Olivia Rose (Feldmeier) Leber. Mr. Leber is survived by his wife, Betty (Waley) Leber; a son, Jay (Dawn) Leber; daughter, Lisa (Jim) Barker; grandchildren Michael and Crickett Leber and Jacob and Grant Barker; great-grandchild, Landen Johnson; step-children Terry, Daniel and Stephen Rausch, and Linda Mcgowan; and a brother, Gary (Karen) Leber. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Orlene (Rippelmeyer) Leber. Mr. Leber was a retired farmer and employee with the Illinois Department of Transportation. He attended St. John UCC in Maeystown. Ray also had served as a 4-H Leader and was a former member of the Waterloo Jaycee’s. He was active in the Future Farmers of American and the Monroe County Fair Association. In addition, he was a past secretary and honorary member of the Ancient Order of Good Fellows. Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 22, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in Maeystown with Pastor Patrick Poole officiating. Mr. Leber will be buried at his church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. John’s UCC Cemetery Fund or St. Vincent DePaul.

Ralph H. Spihlmann, 78, of Columbia, died Aug. 21, 2010. He was born June 2, 1932 in Breese, the son of the late William and Rose (Reilmann) Spihlmann. Ralph married Elizabeth (Kues) Spihlmann in 1954 in Trenton. She died Nov. 17, 2009. Mr. Spihlmann served in the U.S. Marine Corps who was a decorated Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Churchill Trucking in St. Louis, Mo. and Teamsters Local 50. Ralph was a member of Men's Sodality at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia American Legion Post 581, Trenton V.F.W. Post 7983 and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Spihlmann is survived by his children, Barbara (Mark) Andrus of Green Park, Mo., Larry (Susan) Spihlmann of St. Joseph, Darlene (Marvin Lloyd) Spihlmann of Waterloo and Michael (Stacy) Spihlmann of Columbia; a sister, Juliana Timmermann of Trenton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rose Spihlmann of Trenton. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Netemeyer; and a brother, Robert Spihlmann. Visitation is Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral is Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Mr. Spihlmann will be buried at his church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Eugene Schorb - Immaculate Conception Catholic Education Fund.

Helen F. Frierdich, nee McKinney, 78, of Columbia, died Aug. 23, 2010 at Oak Hill Care Center in Waterloo. She was born Dec. 12, 1931, in Linn, Mo., the daughter of the late Jesse and Josie (Walker) McKinney. She married William E. Frierdich in 1994. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Frierdich is survived by her sisters, Doris (Dean) Moore of New Bloomfield, Mo., and Jean Loesch of Ava, Mo., brothers, Clarence McKinney of Warrenton, Mo., Glen (Florence) McKinney of Holts Summit, Mo., and Bill (Yvonne) McKinney of Holts Summit, Mo.; step-grandson, Brad (Kim) Gilmore of Chesterfield, Mo.; sisters-in-law Mary McKinney of Wentzville, Mo., and Hilda Schaefer of Millstadt; and a brother-in-law, Walter (Agnes) Frierdich of Millstadt. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard and Kenneth McKinney. Mrs. Frierdich was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia and worked as a manager at Mavrakos Candy. Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral is Thursday Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Carl Scherrer and Father Ken Schaefer officiating. Mrs. Frierdich will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Eugene Schorb - Immaculate Conception School Education Fund.

Hubert Thomas "Tom" Jotte, 85, of Caseyville, died Aug. 23, 2010 at the Collinsville Rehab and Health Care Center. He was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Highland. Mr. Jotte is survived by his wife, Faith Jotte of Caseyville; a son, Theodore "Ted" Jotte of Marine, daughters Jeanine (Paul) Guccione of Collinsville, Angelene (Jeff) Smith of Highland and Toni (Victor) Meyer of Robertsville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martina Jotte. Mr. Jotte served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was n accomplished trombone player, composer and publisher who taught music at several local schools, including SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Grade School of Waterloo in the 1960s and 70s. He received his bachelor degree in music from Washington University. Upon his graduation, Mr. Jotte was a teacher and band director at several parochial schools in Illinois and Missouri. His All Star Band performed several concerts through the area and played for President John F. Kennedy in 1960. Tom was associated with many performers in the St. Louis area, including Stan Cann, Jimmie Williams and Charlotte Peters. He performed in many of the area parades on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and Gaslight Square in St. Louis, Mo. Visitation and funeral were held at the Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville. According to his wishes, Mr. Jotte’s body was cremated. Memorials may be made to the Billhartz Animal Shelter.

Walter David Cross, 68, of Waterloo, died Aug. 24, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born Jan. 16, 1942, in Sugar Loaf Township, the son of the late David and Mary Elizabeth (nee Scott) Cross. Mr. Cross is survived by his children, David (Sharon) Cross, Dawn Cross and Lisa (Bill) Hulett; grandchildren Lindsey Cross, David (Amanda) Cross Jr., Jenna, Brittany and Brennen Brinkmann and Stephanie, Cody and Mariah Gass; great-grandchildren Gwenyth Turner and Liam Garner; sisters Wanda Nadeau, Peggy Hopewell and Mary Scott; and brothers Donald Cross and Ronald Cross; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Cross was a retired union auto worker. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor David Gerth officiating. Mr. Cross was buried at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House.

Ralph A. Hoock, 87 of Columbia, died Aug. 25, 2010. He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in East Carondelet, the son of the late Adam and Bessie (Walker) Hoock. He married Dorothy (Mueller) Hoock in 1978 at Zoar UCC in New Hanover. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hoock is survived by his sons Roger (Mary) Hoock of Dupo, Allen (Perri) Hoock of Waterloo and Curtis (Laurie) Hoock of Tilden; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lee (Evelyn) Hoock; and step-nephews David (Joelle) Bowen and Jeff (Heather) Bowen; along with nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Christi Hoock; brother, Warren Hoock; and three half-sisters. Mr. Hoock retired from the Columbia Quarry and attended Hope Christian Church in Columbia. A memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at his church with Pastor Dennis Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to the church.

LaVon J. Beck, 77, of Dupo, died Aug. 26, 2010 in Warrensburg Mo. He was born Dec., 3, 1932 in East St. Louis, the son of the late Olen and Iva Mae (Rogers) Beck. Mr. Beck is survived by his sons, Kenneth (Levada) Beck of Columbia, Tenn., and Jon (Paula) Beck of Warrensburg, Mo.; grandchildren Layla Hawkins, and Jon and Kenny Beck; great-grandchildren Joseph, Nathan and Taylor Hawkins; and sisters Wilma Brewer and Katherine Pyle of Dupo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Childers) Beck; an infant son, Richard; five sisters; and one brother. Mr. Beck retired in 1988 from the Union Pacific Railroad after 42 years of service. Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 29, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral is Monday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mr. Beck will be buried at Palmier Hill Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Burnell “B.J.” Menard, 81, 81, of Ruma died July 1, 2010 at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Fort Gage, the son of the late Gregory and Jewel (nee Leavitt) Menard. Mr. Menard is survived by a special friend, Frances Chapman of Ruma; a brother, Rolin “Shorty” Menard of Red Bud; sister, Georgia Renner of Evansville; nieces and nephews; and special grandchildren Erin and Jessica Chapman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rodger Menard. Mr. Menard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was of the Catholic faith and owned B.J. Auto Company in Ruma for more than 35 years. B.J. was a member of American Legion Post 1172 in Evansville and a lifetime member of the Chester V.F.W. Post 3553. According to Mr. Menard’s wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials are being accepted at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud and may be made to masses or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Daniel Edward Harris, 67, of Maeystown, died July 2, 2010, at his residence. He was born July 7, 1942 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Calvin and Josephine (nee Manning) Harris. Mr. Harris is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia (nee Yandell) Harris; daughters Dana (Steven) Hicks and Julie (Bryan) Washausen, both of Waterloo; granddaughters Amy Lynn Hicks, Kristin Patricia Hicks, Emily Jane Washausen and Anna June Washausen; brothers Ervin (Carolyn) Stiles of Dallas, Tex., Martin (Terri) Harris of Cedar Hill, Mo., Leo (Denise) Harris of Maryland, Heights, Mo., and Patrick (Chris) Harris of Florissant, Mo.; sisters Connie (Joseph) Pritchard of Lemoore, Calif., Irene (Ed) Wooten of Maryland Heights, Mo., and Diana (Bo) Lambert of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.; a step-mothers, Ruth Harris of Maryland Heights, Mo.; and special sisters-in-law Carolyn Stiles of Dallas, Tex., Mary Roderick of Festus, Mo., and Katy Yandell of Steele, Mo.; along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by Mother Josephine Cella, father Calvin Harris, step-father Charles (Spud) Cella, all of St. Louis; mother-in-law and father-in-law Ervin and Virginia Yandell of Vanduser, MO; brothers-in-law Tom Yandell of Steele, MO and Clarence Roderick of Potosi, MO; a nephew Lee Yandell of Steele, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents Dominic and Josephine Manning, and Julia and Leander Harris. Mr. Harris was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Dan was the Master Hunter Safety Instructor for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Hunting Education program in Monroe County for many years, teaching thousands of youth proper hunting and gun-use safety. He was an avid hunter and bass fisherman who loved spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Harris was a 32-year member of the Masons, belonging to the Masonic Emeth Lodge 1030 in Cahokia and Masonic Morris Lodge 787 in Waterloo. He was a past-president of the Cahokia Jaycees and a Legion of Honor Unit with the Ainad Shriners. Dan was also a members of the Monroe County Lunker Hunters Bass Club, the Maeystown Sportsman's Club, the Mississippi Valley Gun Club, the Valmeyer American Legion and a patron member of National Rifle Association. Visitation is Monday, July 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, July 6, at 11 a.m., at St. John UCC in Maeystown with Pastor Patrick Poole officiating. He will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association (Time Is Precious Hospice), Shiners' Hospital in St. Louis or the St. John UCC of Maeystown Cemetery Fund.
