Gertrude C. Maher, nee Althoff, 97, of St. Louis, died July 14, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born Oct. 23, 1912, the daughter of the late Jacob and Caroline (nee Garleb) Althoff. Mrs. Maher is survived by her children, Sue (Ivan) Parada and Carol Conglis; grandchildren Dr. Michelle Kettler, Kitty (Neal) Christenbury, Javier (Beth) Parada, Sean Parada and Blaine (Jen) Parada; and great-grandchildren Alixandria and Trevor Radcliffe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester W. Maher; brother in infancy Arthur Althoff; half- brother William Rehling. Mrs. Maher was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer. Visitation is Sunday, July 18 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is Monday, July 19, at 10 a.m. at her church with Father Urban Osuji officiating. Mrs. Maher will be buried at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Masses or doing something kind for someone.
Shirley M. Todd, nee Newton, 72, of Effingham, died July 19, 2010 in Effingham. She was born Feb. 20, 1938, the daughter of the late William Glenn and Elenora (nee Otten) Newton. Mrs. Todd is survived by her children, Cindy (Tim) Hickerson, Paula (Ben) Akin and Carla Johnson; grandchildren Ellen (John) Odle, Larenzo Johnson, Jonathan Hickerson, Lakesha Johnson, Jessica Hickerson, Zeana Johnson and Zelman Johnson; and great-grandchildren Deamontai Allen and Brandon Houston. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Todd; and a brother, Dean Newton. Visitation is Wednesday, July 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is July 22, at 9:30 a.m., at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mrs. Todd will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Marvin W. Greatting, 83, of Columbia, died July 20, 2010 at Columbia Convalescent Center. He was born July 29, 1926, in Columbia, the son of the late Roland and Mamie (Kuehne) Greatting. He married Pauline (Heumann) Greatting in 1949 in Red Bud. In addition to his wife, Mr. Greatting is survived by his sons Richard (Namiko) Greatting of San Diego, Calif., Allen (Julie) Greatting of Fults, Mark (Starlin) Greatting of Springfield and David (Julie) Greatting of Columbia; grandchildren Chris (Becky) Greatting, Chris and Kevin Milkert, Heather, Hillary and Zachary Greatting and Joel and Reed Greatting; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Roland (Janice) Greatting of Ellis Grove; sisters Ruby Litzinger of St. Louis, Mo., Annabelle (Si) Vallett of Steeleville and Linda Peck of Belleville. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Hal Litzinger. Mr. Greatting served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being part of one of the first units to return to Shangai, China. He owned Greatting's Market in Columbia for more than 30 years. After closing the mark, he was employed at The Market Place in Columbia and Roma's in Waterloo. Mr. Greatting was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia and was on the drill team of the Columbia American Legion Post 581. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, golf and gardening. Visitation is Friday, July 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral service is Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Steven Theiss and former Pastor Ed Melchoir officiating. Mr. Greatting will be buried at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Columbia. Iona Bertha Pfau, 91, of Columbia, died July 21, 2010 at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Fults, the daughter of the late Hugo and Anna (Sprankle) Hoffmann. Mrs. Pfau is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Jordan; a son, John Pfau; dear friend, Carol Reichert; grandchildren Kathy, Tracy, Steven, Jenny, Aaron and Darren; great-grandchildren R.J., Sally and Felicia; and her cat Lily; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Tunze; second husband, John Pfau Jr.; sisters Dorothea Huebner, Erna Heyl, Elsie Altes and Hilda Huebner. Mrs. Pfau was a retired supervisor for Bemis Bag Co. She was a member of Columbia American Legion Post 581 Auxiliary. Iona loved to bowl. Visitation is Saturday, July 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. A service will immediately follow at the funeral home with Rev. Matthew Friz officiating. Ardell W.C. Huebner, nee Melching, of Waterloo, died July 22, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born June 20, 1919, the daughter of the late Henry and Anna (nee Lange) Melching. Mrs. Huebner is survived by her daughter, Sharon Huebner Goff; adopted grandchildren Amy and Zachary Eager; and neighbors, Steve and Carolyn Eagen; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Harry H. Huebner; and a brother, Wyman Melching. Mrs. Huebner and her husband farmed land near St. Joe. Ardell was a lifetime member of Zion UCC of St. Joe. She was honored on this Mother’s Day as the oldest living member. Ardell loved the color red, rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals, hummingbirds, African violets, cooking, gardening, volunteering at church, telling jokes and quilting. Visitation is Saturday, July 24 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. The service is Sunday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Nancy Spier-Lee officiating. Ronda Ann LaMear, 47, of Dupo, died July 23, 2010 at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis following an automobile accident. She was born Dec. 22, 1962 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Don Gould and the late Patty Gould. In addition to her father, Mrs. LaMear is survived by her husband, David LaMear; sons T.J. Mills, Tony Mills and Gary Mills; a step-daughter, Tiffany LaMear; step-son, Brandon LaMear; brothers Ronnie, Donnie and Tommy Gould; and a sister, Donna DeJarnette. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by a step-son, Zachary LaMear. Visitation is Tuesday, July 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. A reception will follow at Mac’s Levee Inn in East Carondelet. According to her wishes, Mrs. LaMear’s body was cremated.
Mabel D. Kaestner, nee Hoffmann, 88, of Waterloo, died July 24, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Oct. 16, 1921 in Renault, the daughter of the late Walter and Sophia (nee Offermann) Hoffmann. Mrs. Kaestner is survived by her daughter, Marianne May; grandchildren Allen (Sharon) May, Laura (Charles) Ford, Angie (Robert) Henshaw and Jeff (Jen) Carroll; great-grandchildren Amanda and Nicholas Henshaw, Allison and Andrew Ford, Ethan May and Jillian and Jared Carroll; sisters Anita (Milton) Wild and Ardell (Lee) Prange; and sisters-in-law Marlene Kaestner and Alice Kaestner; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur H. Kaestner; a daughter, Janet Carroll; sister, Virginia Rodenberg; and sons-in-law Dennis May and Joe Carroll. Mrs. Kaestner was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Renault’s Ladies Aid. Visitation is Monday, July 26, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Roger D. Happy, 71, of Columbia, died July 24, 2010. He was born Dec. 26, 1938, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Curtis and Olive (Schroeder) Happy. He married Doris Mae (Nixon) Happy in 1962. In addition to his wife, Mr. Happy is survived by his daughters Denise (Michael) Byrd, Sharyl (David) Hakenewerth and Stacy (Greg) Mehrmann; grandchildren Jason Byrd, Jaime (Matthew) Ritzel, Emily (Eric) DuBois, Morgan Hakenewerth, Madison Mehrmann and Emma Mehrmann; great-grandchildren Maybelle, Everett and Henry Ritzel; a brother, Donald J. Happy; and an uncle, Claude James (Donna) Schroeder. Mr. Happy served in the U.S. Army – stationed in Germany in 1958 – 1960. He was employed as an accountant for 50 years, retiring from U.S. Bank in downtown St. Louis. Roger enjoyed his family, bowling, fishing and playing cards. Priscilla E. Cole, nee Weaver, 84, of Waterloo, died July 26, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born March 1, 1926, in Beaver Falls, Penn., the daughter of the late Millard and Priscilla (nee Boughey) Weaver. Mrs. Cole is survived by her husband, Robert J Cole; sons Lynn (Kristina) Cole of Grantham, NH., Robert J. (Susan) Cole of Waterloo and Richard Mark (Linda) Cole of Baldwinsville, NY.; and a daughter, Carol H. (Christopher) Carlson of Stafford, Va.; along with numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Victoria; and brothers Donald, James, Richard and Eric. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Beaver Falls, Penn. Memorials may be made to St. Paul UCC of Waterloo and the Oak Hill Senior Center Activity Fund.
Lillian Frieda Heberer, nee Wittlich, of Mascoutah, 101, died Monday, July 26, 2010 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville following a brief illness. She was born July 17, 1909 in Belleville to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Wittlich. She married Henry C. Heberer in 1928 in Effingham. They lived on a farm near Freeburg until Henry’s retirement in 1959 at which point they moved to Mascoutah. Henry died in 1968. Mrs. Heberer is survived by a son, Robert D. “Bob” (Janet) Heberer; daughter, Mary K. (Norman) Richter; grandchildren Kathleen (Ed) Weilbacher, James (Mary) Heberer, Robert “Rob” Heberer II, Julie (Dennis) Heberer Graul, Michael (Jennifer) Richter, Sharon (Dr. James) Grimes and Charles Richter; great-grandchildren John Weilbacher, Rose Weilbacher, Katherine and Rachel Richter and Maxwell, Madeline and Miles Grimes; step-great-grandsons Andrew and Timothy Matecki; step-great-great-grandsons Chase and Jack Matecki; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Heberer, June Wittlich and Milla Wittlich Engel; along with nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Elizabeth who in 1993; brothers Henry, Louis, Irvin, Lester and Roland Wittlich; and a sister, Rosella Wittlich Blanc. The family is appreciative for those who enabled Lillian to live in her home until her recent illness, particularly Muriel Brockmeier who provided assistance the past five years. Lil was an accomplished artist, gardener and quilter who was active in community life. She was a past master of the Turkey Hill Grange where she was a member for 85 years, a past-president of District V Garden Clubs of Illinois, a master flower show judge, past-president of the Mascoutah Garden Club and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Mrs. Heberer attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in Freeburg and later St. John United Church of Christ in Mascoutah where she remained a quilter and Ladies Guild member for many years. The 2009 St. John Quilt show featured many of the quilts she made during her lifetime. Funeral is Thursday, July 29, at 10 a.m., at St. John UCC of Mascoutah with Rev. Hugh Fitz and Rev. Dr. Donald Wagner officiating. Moll Funeral Home of Mascoutah handled the arrangements. Mrs. Heberer will be buried at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to the National Foundation For Ectodermal Dysplasia or to St. John UCC in Mascoutah.
