Rudy E. Freivogel, 78, of Waterloo, formerly of Freeburg, died Jan. 2, 2009, at his residence. He was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Belleville, the son of the late Andrew and Myrtle (nee Keck) Freivogel. Mr. Freivogel is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Freivogel nee Gaido; sisters-in-law Dorothy Schobert and Helen (August) Werner; and a brother-in-law, Ernest (Marilyn) Gaido; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Daenzer; a brother, William Freivogel; in-laws Sam and Florence Gaido; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Freivogel; and faithful companions Dandy and Cricket. Mr. Freivogel was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, the former owner of R. and S. Milk and Quality Milk Bar and was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. He was active in Freeburg community affairs, including the Freeburg VFW, a past president the Freeburg Chamber of Commerce, the Men's Club at St. Joseph Church in Freeburg and the Freeburg Rotary Club. He enjoyed playing softball, traveling, playing cards and watching sports. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo, with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. He was buried at the church's cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Humane Society.

Harvey Louis Stumpf, 84, of Columbia, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Barnes Jewish Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 24, 1924, in Valmeyer, the son of the late Emil and Lenora (Hartmann) Stumpf. He married Dixie (Hamilton) Stumpf in 1983 in Freeburg. She survives him. Mr. Stumpf is also survived by his children, Mark (Ellen) Dehn of Columbia, Alan (Norine) Stumpf of Waterloo, John (Lauren) Stumpf of Hewitt, Tex., Celia Dehn of Columbia, Frederick (Chris) Stumpf of Columbia, Ida Lee Boyle of McNabb and Lisa Lee (Brian) Cunningham of Columbia; sisters Virginia Pieper of Waterloo and Geneva Pflasterer of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florine (Stumpf) Stumpf, who died in 1981; and a son-in-law, Walter Boyle. Mr. Stumpf was a lifelong Columbia area farmer who was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the church orchestra at St. Paul UCC of Columbia, a member of American Legion Post 581, past-president of the Monroe County Farm Bureau, a past-president of the Columbia Rotary, a former member of the Monroe County Regional Planning Commission, the Illinois Realtors Association and Toastmasters International. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC of Columbia, with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Mr. Stumpf was cremated. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul UCC Music Fund.

Marlyn Henson, nee Kossina, 70, of Columbia, died Dec. 29, 2008, at her residence. She was born Nov. 24, 1938 in East St. Louis, the daughter of Bertha "Bertie" Kossina of Columbia and the late Ernest Kossina. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Henson is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald Henson Sr.; children Dee Ann Marie (David) Stroop of Fairfax Station, Va., J.D. (Aimee) Henson Jr. of Makakilo, Ha., and Karri Katherine (Karl) Mize of Jeffersonton, Va.; grandchildren Richard, Adam, Sarah, Russell, Jacob, Brandon, Kameron and Kasey; and a brother, Clark (JoAnn) Kossina of Columbia; along with nieces, nephews, cousin, other relatives and friends. After high School, Marlyn worked for Laclede Steel, the Senior Citizen Recreation Center in Carbondale, was a stock grain broker and in the craft department at Lee's Hardware. She was a member of the Christ UCC of Dupo choir and St. Louis Smocking Guild. Visitation was at Dashner - Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral was at Christ UCC of Dupo, with Rev. Kim Kelly officiating. According to her wishes, Mrs. Henson was cremated. Memorials may be made to the Christ UCC of Dupo Elevator Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois Orange South.

Justin R. Erickson, 23, of Waterloo, died Jan. 7, 2009, at St. Anthony's Medical Center, St. Louis, Mo. He was born Aug. 9, 1985, in Belleville, the son of Leif and Pamela (nee Barnes) Erickson of Waterloo. In addition to his parents, Mr. Erickson is survived by a sister, Courtney Erickson and her fiancé, Gregory Venker, of Madison, Wis.; paternal grandfather, Gerald Erickson of Columbia; maternal grandparents Eugene and Marie (nee Matchett) Barnes of Freeburg; an uncle, Scott Erickson of Manchester, Mo.; an aunt, Jackie (Lloyd) Marshall of Alton; and cousins Andrea (Steven) Boomer of Alton and Jamie Barnes of Prairie du Rocher. He was preceded in death by an uncle, Robert Barnes; and his paternal grandmother, Shirley (nee Anderson) Erickson. Mr. Erickson, a 2004 graduate of Belleville Township High School West, was currently attending Southwestern Illinois College. He had also attended Southeast Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He was a member of St. Paul UCC in Belleville. Visitation and funeral were at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville, the Rev. Kris Avise-Rouse officiating. Mr. Erickson was buried at St. Paul's Cemetery in Freeburg. Memorials may be made to Hyland Behavioral Health at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Captain William "Bill" Warren II, 43, of Chesapeake, Va., the son of Colonel William and Judith Binder Warren, formerly of Waterloo, died Dec. 30, 2008. In addition to his parents, Mr. Warren is survived by his wife, Robin; sister, Amy (Coburn) Pharr; aunts and uncles David (Sandra) Binder, Richard (Portia) Binder, Morris (Nina) Binder and Carole (Ronald) Brandt. Mr. Warren was a 1988 graduate of Georgia Tech where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and later earned a Master's Degree from Regent University. Bill was a retired communications officer with the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Mr. Warren was a member of the Blinded Veterans Association and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. He was buried at Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.

Mildred R. Schilling, nee Loesche, 85, of Waterloo died Jan. 10, 2009 in Waterloo She was born March 18, 1923, in Red Bud, the daughter of the late Theodore and Olinda (nee Guebert) Loesche. She was the wife of the late Jerome Schilling, Mike Vogler and Robert Stiening. Besides her husbands, Mrs. Schilling was preceded in death by a son, James R. Stiening; a step-son, Jim Schilling; and a brother, Clifford Loesche. Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn (Allan) Mueller; step-children, Ronald (Geraldine) Schilling, Judy (Terry) Schreder, Linda (David) Rippelmeyer and Geralyn (Bruce) Kaestner; step-daughter-in-law, Betty (William) Schimpf; grandchildren Bryan and Lauren Mueller, Jeff Steining, Kimberly (Ken) Meyer and Travis (Miranda) Stieningl; along with step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schilling was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in WAterloo, the Ladies Aid and the Waterloo VFW Auxiliary. Visitation is at the Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo on Friday, Jan. 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. The funeral is at 11 a.m. on Jan. 17, at the duneral home with the Rev. Tony Troup officiating. She will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Youth Program or Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Paul A. Rippelmeyer, 84, of Waterloo died Jan. 7, 2009 in Belleville. He was born Dec. 17, 1924 in Chalfin Bridge, the son of the late Albert and Katherine (nee Illert) Rippelmeyer. Mr. Rippelmeyer is survived by his wife, Gerry (nee Isgrigg) Rippelmeyer; children, Dennis P. Rippelmeyer, Carol (Wesley) Dueker and Rhonda (Mark) Burk; grandchildren Randy (Siny) Rippelmeyer, Tara Dueker, Tracie (Brad) Jones, Krista (Kawika) Tavares and Kelly (Aaron) Meureer; great-grandchildren, Kaylo, Kalani, Alyssa, Jayden, Clint and Sophia; sisters Mildred Meyer, Ethel Luehring, Esther (Ted) Muertz, Loretta Rodenberg and Florence Jaenke; a brother, Herman (Shirley) Rippelmeyer; and a sister-in-law, Delores Nerone. Mr. Rippelmeyer was preceded in death by brothers Milton and George Rippelmeyer. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waterloo, a a retired member of Laborer's Local 459 in Belleville and was a 30-year volunteer at Oak Hill Sunday services. A memorial service will be Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Waterloo, with Pastor Steve Neill officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Waterloo or Oak Hill.

Harry A. Stelmach, 91, of Columbia, died Jan. 28, 2009, at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Jan. 6, 1918, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Anthony and Agatha (Rozaitis) Stelmach. He was the husband of the late Doris (Frank) Stelmach. She died on Nov. 20, 1980. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Frank and Bill Stelmach; and sisters Sally Stelmach, Josephine Jimas, Ann Kostecki and Elsie Leighton. Mr. Stelmach is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth (Harold) Janson of Columbia; and a dear friend, Vicki Mayfield of St. Louis, Mo.; along with nieces and nephews, great-nieces; great-nephews, great-great nieces; great-great-nephews; other relatives and friends. Mr. Stelmach served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a retired Carpenters Foreman at St. Louis Ship and was a past member of the Columbia Senior Citizens. There were no public services. Lawlor Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Monroe County.

Jennifer Lynn Buss, 37, of Belleville died Jan. 23, 2009 in Belleville. She was the daughter of Carmelita E. (nee Frierdich) Buss; and the late Elmer E. Buss, Jr. of Waterloo and was born June 10, 1971 at St. Louis. Besides her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Ashley Marie Powell of Rockwood, Tenn.; a brother, Jeffery (Crystal) Buss of Fults; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation was at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo where a funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Feb. 3. Her remains were cremated. DeFabio Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to donor’s choice.

Mabel P. Foland, nee Gerkin, 86, of Cahokia, died Jan. 21, 2009, in Waterloo. She was born Nov. 12, 1922 in Troy, the daughter of the late Emil and Amelia (nee Hoenig) Gerkin. Mr. Foland is survived by her children Donna Foland of Louisville, Ky., Harry Foland if Imperial, Mo., Kathy Whitten of Summerville, SC., and Pamela (Craig) Camp of Waterloo; and grandchildren Grant Whitten, Kristin Campo, Ryan Campo and Audrey Foland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry G. Foland. Visitation was Saturday, Jan. 24, at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral followed at Quernheim’s with Father Don Blaes officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
