Jerry Paul Hursey, 70,o f Waterloo died Jan. 31, 2009 in St. Louis. He was the husband of Gloria J. Hursey, nee Birlew. He was the son of the late Paul A. and Arlene O. (nee Nevois) Hursey. Mr. Hursey was born Sept. 13, 1938 at Belleville. Besides his wife, Mr. Hursey is survived by a son, Chris Hursey of Arnold and other friends and relatives. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Clarence Hursey. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Quernheim Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Clara A. Rodenberg, nee Schmitz, 87, of Renault, died Jan. 30,2009 at Red Bud. She was born Feb. 25, 1921 at Renault the daughter of the late William and Minnie (nee Meyer) Schmitz. She was the wife of the late Alvin A.Rodenberg whom she married Jan. 25, 1947 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Renault. Survivors include three children, Janet (Leroy0 Brandt, Doris (Robert) Weber and Ronald (Debbie) Rodenberg, all of Fults; grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Mormann, Gary (Kelly) Brandt, Amy (James) Halleran, Melanie Weber, Carrie Rodenberg and Sarah Roden berg; great-grandchildren, Brian Mormann, Matthew Mormann, Garrett Brandt, Cohen Brandt and Erin Halleran; three sisters, Irene Fausz, Agnes Mormann, Darlene Wetzler; a sister-in-law, Emma Rodenberg; nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Rodenberg was preceded in death by six sisters, Mathilda Rast, Eleanora Donius, Orlena Novak, Katie Schmitz, Nelda Schmitz and Rose Schmitz; and a brother, George Schmitz. Visitation was at the Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was Monday, Feb. 2 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church with Father Roger Karban officiating. Burial was at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made in the form of masses or family wishes.
Eugene C. Dannehold, 78, of Waterloo, died Jan. 19, 2009 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 20, 1930 in Waterloo, the son of the late Leo and Rose (nee Kolmer) Dannehold. Mr. Dannehold is survived by a son, Dennis Dannehold; sisters Alberta Hicks and Rosalie (Harold) Baum; and a brother, Harold (Irene) Dannehold. He was preceded in death by sisters Evelyn Janson and Kathleen Straub; a brother, Warren Dannehold; and special friend Hazel Adams. Mr. Dannehold was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo and the Waterloo American Legion. Visitation was Thursday, Jan. 22 at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was Friday, Jan. 23 at Quernheim’s, with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.
Alice E. Baebler, 92, of Waterloo, died Jan. 24, 2009, in Red Bud. She was born May 9, 1916 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Herman and Frieda (nee Becker) Baebler. Ms. Baebler is survived by sisters-in-law Marion Baebler and Vera Baebler; niece Kristine (Dale) Rippelmeyer; nephew Michael (Marsha) Baebler; great-nephews Aaron Rippelmeyer, Jason Rippelmeyer and Layton Baebler; and great-niece Adria Baebler. She was preceded in death by brothers Harold Baebler and Kenneth Baebler. A funeral was Monday, Jan. 26 at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Ms. Baebler was buried at the Waterloo City Cemetery.
Donald W. Thomas, 71, of St. Louis, Mor, died Jan. 26, 2009. He survived by his wife, Anita J. Thomas (nee Bense); children Donella (Larry) Hill and David Thomas; step-children Cate (Frank) Garcia, Tim Gutknecht of Waterloo and Jennifer (Mike) Lynch; brother Glenn (Doris) Thomas; and grandchildren Abby, Thomas, Hailey, Brianna, Camden, Andrew, 'Peter and Eliana; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Louise E. Shea, 98, of Columbia, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born Sept. 12, 1910, in Burksville, the daughter of the late Fred and Christina (Senf) Lange. She was the widow of the late Leo Shea. She was retired as the manager from the Columbia Gymnastic Association (Turner Hall). Mrs. Shea is survived by a daughter-in-law, Helen Mae Shea of Columbia; along with nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Leo W. Shea; sisters Anna Melching, Edna Einwich, Amanda Melching and Norma Nobbe; and brothers Henry, William and August Lange. Visitation at Lawlor Funeral Home. A funeral followed with Rev. William Groennert officiating. Mrs. Shea was buried at· the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Columbia .

Margaret Kelemetc, 68, of Columbia, died Feb. 11, 2009, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Nov. 19, 1940, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late August and Margaret (Hayes) Hammel. She married James Kelemetc in 1968 in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to her husband, she was survived by her children, Michelle (Nicholes) Allred of O'Fallon, Mo., Stephanie (Steven) Vehige of St. Charles, Mo., Scott (Gina) Kelemetc of Waterloo, Pam (Craig) Unger of Waterloo and Sara Kelemetc of Columbia; grandchildren Reily and Abby, Nora and Samuel, Natalie, Emma and Ellen; brothers Donald Hammel, of Fla., and Jean (Jeanne) Hammel of St. Louis, Mo.; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by sisters Patsy (Lee) Bradley and Dorothy (Harvey) Schroer; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hammel. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. She was buried at the church's cemetery. Reverend Monsignor James Jansen, 79, of Germantown, died Feb. 11, 2009 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. He was born April 15, 1929 in Germantown, the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Gesenhues) Jansen. He was ordained a priest in 1955 by the Most Reverend Albert Zuroweste. Monsignor Jansen was the last of his immediate family to die, having 10 brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by brothers Gerald, Richard, Thomas, Anthony and Paul Jansen; sisters Sr. Dolores Marie Jansen, Marcella Nagel, Helen Henken, Mary Ann Jansen and Dorothy Perry. Monsignor Jansen was survived by a brother-in-law, Toby Nagel of Gary, Ind.; and sisters-in-law Florence Jansen and Lorinda Jansen, both of Germantown; Marjorie Jansen of Bartelso and Mary Ann Jansen of Freeburg; along with numerous nephews and nieces. He served as an associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Centerville, associate pastor at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose, associate pastor in Fairmont City, chaplain at St. Clement Hospital in Red Bud, taught at Gibault High School and was pastor in Tipton, Madonnaville, Hecker and Columbia. Msgr. Jansen served in Columbia approximately 15 years. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown, Fourth Degree Pope John Paul I Assembly, Knights of Columbus Council 6996 in Fairview Heights and was a past board member of Clergymen's Aid Society, Diocesan Finance Council. Visitation was at St. Boniface Church in Germantown. Funeral was at the church with the Reverend Dennis Voss, Bishop Stanley Schlarmann and Rev. James Buerster officiating. Monsignor Jansen was buried at Saint Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Germantown. Memorials may be made to the Clergymen Aid Society or Heartland Hospice.
Elizabeth B. Hoffman, nee Bailey, 96, of Waterloo, died Feb. 7, 2009. She was born Feb. 5, 1913 in Altamont, the daughter of the late Harvey and Katie (nee Kuffel) Bailey. Mrs. Hoffman is survived by a daughter, Ann (Ernest) Hood of Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Carol Burton of Waterloo; first husband, Ralph Burton of Montana; a niece, Lorelei Kettler of New York; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Hoffman; a son, Robert Bailey Burton; and a sister, Katharyn Beverly. Mrs. Hoffman was a Monroe County Home Extension Advisor for many years in Monroe County. After retiring, she began a second career as a watercolor artist. She attended painting seminars throughout the United States and Europe. She was a founding member of the Heartland Women's Writers Guild and contributed to their book, "Orchids in the Cornfield." Mrs. Hoffman was a member of the Society of Independent Artists, the St. Louis Artist's Guild, St. Paul UCC of Waterloo, Women's Fellowship, DAR Whiteside Chapter and the Monroe County Association For Home and Community Education. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC of Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mrs. Hoffman was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorial may be made to the History Museum of Monroe County or St. Paul UCC of Waterloo.
