Dr. Carole Ann Ryan (McNamara)
Carole Ann McNamara Ryan, 62, of Jacksonville died Tuesday afternoon, September 26, 2000 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born on November 26, 1937 in Jacksonville the daughter of Harold L. and Bernice Doyle McNamara. She married William Jack Ryan on August 28, 1965 in Jacksonville and he survives.
She is also survived by one daughter, Nicole Ryan of Naples, Florida.
Dr. Ryan was educated at Our Saviour School and Routt High School and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Illinois College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in French and a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Grenoble, France in 1959-60. While at Illinois College, she was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Literary Society and served as its president and vice president. She was also a co-editor of the Rig Veda Yearbook and a cheerleader.
She continued her education at the University of Illinois, receiving a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in French in 1961. She then did doctoral course work in French at Northwestern University in 1966-67. In 1988 she received her Ph.D. in education with a concentration in cultural foundations from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Dr. Ryan served as Professor of Modern Languages (French) and Education (director of foreign language student teachers) at Illinois College from 1962 until June of 2000. From 1984 to 1988 she served as Associate Dean of Students at the College, returning to teaching full time in the fall of 1988. She served on numerous faculty committees including faculty representative to the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women; Director of Illinois College Women’s Collegium 1976-82; and a member and sub-committee chair of the McGaw Fine Arts Committee.
During her years as an educator at Illinois College, Dr. Ryan received numerous awards and recognitions. She was the 1987 recipient of the Ambassador Award by the Illinois College Alumni Association and was named Parade Marshal for the 1991 Illinois College Homecoming Parade. In 1998, Dr. Ryan was cited for completing more than a decade of service as an officer of the Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Illinois College. She served for several years as co-chairperson for the annual Mardi Gras “Carnival,” a day-long event for area high school foreign language students.
Dr. Ryan was very active in many professional and community organizations. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and in 1989-90 chaired their International Committee; president and chapter president of the Illinois College chapter of the American Association of University Professors; member of the Illinois Task Force on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and International Studies and president of the American Association of Teachers of French in Downstate Illinois Chapter in 1980-82. She was Immediate Past-President of the Illinois Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages. She was also a member of the American Association of Canadian Studies, the International Council on Education for Teaching, and the Illinois Curriculum Council. She served on the David A. Smith House Board, was a member of the Jacksonville Junior Women’s Club, Jacksonville Noon Rotary, Wednesday Class Literary Club, and had been very active in the Art Association of Jacksonville, co-chairing the Beaux Arts Ball in 1988. She was a lifetime member of the Church of Our Saviour.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Church of Our Saviour with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends following a 5 p.m. prayer service, until 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Carole Ann Ryan Faculty Development Fund or the Scleroderma Foundation.
Mr. Edwin A. Saye
Edwin A. Saye, 93, of St. Charles, Missouri died Monday, October 9, 2000 at Garden View Care Center in Chesterfield, Missouri. He was born on August 22, 1907 in Morgan County the son of Edwin G. and Clara Andras Saye.
He is survived by several cousins.
Mr. Saye was Assistant Director of Admissions at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He enjoyed traveling, photography, and agriculture.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2000 at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends at the Williamson Funeral Home after9:30 a.m. Friday until time to depart for the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Helen Louise Sayre (Crain)
Helen Louise Sayre, 84, of Jacksonville died Thursday morning, December 28, 2000 at Barton W. Stone Christian Home. She was born on June 26, 1916 in Woodson, the daughter of Nellis H. and Myrtle Seymour Crain. She married Richard C. Sayre on March 8, 1936 at Woodson Christian Church and he preceded her in death on October 31, 1981.
She is survived by three sons, Merle (wife, Linda) Sayre of Virginia, Neil (wife, Mary) Sayre of Riverside, California and Darryl (wife, Ruth Ella “Ruthie”) Sayre of Franklin; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn (husband, Gus) Kelly of Madison, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sayre was a member of the Morgan County Genealogical Society, D.A.R., Morgan County Home Extension and Centenary United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Illinois College.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends from noon until the time of service on Saturday. Memorials are suggested to Franklin United Methodist Church, Centenary United Methodist Church or Training Education for Adult Learners Literacy Program in Jacksonville.
Mr. Garland H. "Lefty" Scherff
Garland Henry “Lefty” Scherff, 87, of Bridgeton, Missouri and formerly of Jacksonville died Friday evening, August 25, 2000 at the residence of his daughter in Bridgeton. He was born November 1, 1912 in Palatine, Illinois the son of Henry and Emma Scherff. He married Maxine Arlene Woods on April 26, 1937 and they had 55 years together before she preceded him in death on September 13, 1992.
He is survived by one son, Harold Dean (wife, Ruth) Scherff of Pine, Colorado; one daughter, Crystal Lee Hulsey of Bridgeton, Missouri; and two grandsons.
“Lefty” served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as a salesman in Peoria, before moving to Osage Beach, Missouri where he was owner of “Lefty’s Little Peoria.” He was elected the first Mayor of Osage Beach. He and Maxine moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where he worked as a sales manager. Upon retirement, he and Maxine moved to Jacksonville where he stayed until May of 2000, when he moved to Bridgeton.
“Lefty” was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville; the American Legion for over 50 years, and a member of the Masonic Lodge at Camdenton, Missouri where he was a Past-Master, Yelduz Shrine in Aberdeen, South Dakota; the American Association of Retired Persons, and the National Rifle Association.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 28, 2000 at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the church following the service. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Elmer L. "Buster" Schwalb
Elmer L. “Buster” Schwalb, 51, of Jacksonville died late Thursday evening, June 22, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born on March 13, 1949 in Beardstown the son of Elmer Hallie and Laura Irene Morgan Schwalb. He married Grace A. Fisher on October 2, 1976 in Detroit, Illinois and she survives.
He is also survived by one daughter, Andrea Marie Schwalb at home and one sister, Dee Williams of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christine Adele Schwalb, two brothers, Gayland “Sonny” Schwalb and Robert Lee “Bob” Schwalb, and one sister, Suzie Dunkirk.
Mr. Schwalb had been a mechanic for Walker Motor Company, later Westown Motors, in Jacksonville. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed racing, fishing and boating.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2000 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with the family friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Zachary H. Scott
Zachary H. Scott, 22, of Jacksonville and formerly of Warner Robins, Georgia died Friday evening, September 15, 2000 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on July 3, 1978 in Jacksonville the son of Randy J. and Jane Bonner Scott.
He is survived by his parents, one brother, Peter Bonner Scott, and one sister, Lucille Reeves Scott, all of Jacksonville; paternal grandmother Evelyn Scott of Franklin; maternal grandfather Stephen J. Bonner of Guymon, Oklahoma, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Howard Scott and his maternal grandmother, Joy Wilson Bonner.
Mr. Scott was an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force, stationed at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. He served as a Crew Chief on a KC-135R, with the 19th ARG (Air Refueling Group). He had received the Air Force Achievement Medal for Meritorious Service for his work in supporting Operations Allied Force and Desert Thunder, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Mr. Scott was a 1997 graduate of Jacksonville High School where he participated in Track and Cross Country and played cello for the orchestra. He had a paper route for the journal courier for about ten years. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout and member of Troop 103 in Jacksonville and as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 202 in Warner Robins. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and attended the Shirley Hills Baptist Church and youth group in Macon, Georgia. He was a youth soccer coach in Warner Robbins, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Zak Scott Memorial Fund, which is being established to later benefit leukemia research and the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Walter Howard "Bud" Seymour
Walter Howard “Bud” Seymour, 81, of Scottville died Monday morning, February 5, 2001 at Carlinville Area Hospital. He was born June 6, 1919 in Modesto the son of Galen Robin and Ada Louanna Fairburn Seymour.
He is survived by one sister, Mary (husband, Gerald) Ball of Modesto, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Irene Dowland, Virginia Jones, Betty Butler and Margurite Pearson.
Mr. Seymour retired from the Morgan County Highway Department. Prior to working for the highway department, Mr. Seymour had done a variety of mechanical work. He had been Macoupin County (Scottville Township) Road Commissioner. He served in the United States Army during World War II, in Northern France and Central Europe.
Mr. Seymour enjoyed antique steam and gasoline engines and had attended the Old Settler’s Days at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa for 25 consecutive years. He was a member of Harts Prairie Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2001 at Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra with burial at Bull Cemetery in rural Franklin. Friends may call after 3:30 on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Della M. Shaw (Chapman)
Della M. Shaw, 94, of Carrollton died on Saturday Sept. 30, 2000 at
Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born on Sept. 23, 1906 in Walkerville she was the daughter of the late
Willis E. and Addie M. McClenning Chapman.
She married Buford Shaw on May 19, 1927 in Hardin and he preceded
her in death on Jan. 6, 1981.
Surviving are a daughter: Mrs. Wilbur “Audra” Price of Carrollton , 3
grandchildren: Pamela Cress of Litchfield, Starr Hensley of Broken Bow,
Oklahoma and Penny Gill of Rogers, Ark. 1 sister: Ethel Jackson of Clinton,
Ky. and 3 brothers: John Chapman of Carrollton, Willis Chapman of Godfrey
and Virgil Chapman of Kane.
She was preceded in death by 1 sister : Rosa and 6 brothers: Orville,
William, Harvey, Russell, Glendon and Vernon.
She was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville for over
50 years. Rev. Clyde Shaw of the church will do the services on Tuesday at
1 P.M. at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Visitation will be
held from 11 A.M. on Tuesday until time of service. Burial will be in the
Eldred Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Raise
the Roof Fund at Boyd Memorial Hospital.
Rena Shaw (Williams)
Rena Shaw, 91, of Carlinville formerly of Green e Co. died at 6:20 P.M. on
Thursday at Friendship Home in Carlinville.
Born on Nov. 7, 1909 in Bluffdale Twp. she was the daughter of the late
John and Nora Meek Williams.
She married Truman Shaw Sr. in 1926 in Eldred and he preceded her in
death on Nov. 19, 1977.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Betty Hall of Wichita, Kansas, Bessie
McDonnell of Lincoln City, Oregon, and Dolores Huff of Palmyra.
2 sons survive: Truman Shaw Jr. of Green field and Jesse Shaw of
Carrollton. There are 34 Grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and
several great-great-grandchildren. 2 sisters survive: Barbara Schnelten of
Carrollton and Marie Hess of Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by a son: John Shaw, 7 grandchildren, 3
brothers: Orville, Virgil and Edward Williams and a sister Bessie Skinner.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton and
had worked as a nursing assistant in Friendship Home in Carlinville and
Sunshine Manor in Carlinville. She will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be from 1 P.M. until service time at 2 P.M. Monday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will follow in Kane
Cemetery. Memorials are mentioned to the Ill. Heart Assoc. and the First
Baptist Church.
Mr. Roy C. Shelton
Roy C. “Buck” Shelton
Roy C. “Buck” Shelton, 89, of Woodson died Saturday evening, July 8, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born on January 1, 1911 in Woodson the son of Jasper and Allie Asher Shelton. He married Opal I. Smith on September 10, 1939 in Crown Point, Indiana and she preceded him in death on March 24, 2000.
He is survived by one sister, Eva Ailsworth of Chicago, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Shelton, and three sisters, Myrtle Winter, Faye Elsome, and Zora May Shelton.
Mr. Shelton was a member of Bartenders Local #630 in Jacksonville for forty years. He tended bar at the Triangle Club in Woodson for 21 years and had also worked at the Jacksonville Elks Lodge and Bahan’s Tavern, when it was located on the square.
Mr. Shelton enjoyed gardening and tending to his yard.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Woodson Christian Church. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
Miss Zora May Shelton
Zora May Shelton, 98 of Jacksonville died Wednesday morning, May 17, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born February 4, 1902 in Woodson, the daughter of Jasper and Allie Asher Shelton.
Surviving is a brother, Roy Shelton of Jacksonville and one sister, Eva Ailsworth of Chicago. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Shelton and two sisters, Faye Erlsome and Myrtle Winter.
Miss Shelton had been employed as a dietary aide at MacMurray College for 30 years.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2000 at Asbury Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Woodson Christian Church. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Truman L. Short
Truman L. Short, age 69, of Roodhouse, died early Thursday
morning, Dec. 14, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born June 28, 1931 in Wrights, the son of Hubert H. and
Alma Blanche Moore Short.
He married Sandra L. Hembree on Feb. 8, 1952 in Pocahontas,
Arkansas and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Herschel (wife, Joyce) Short of
Roodhouse; one daughter, Brenda (husband, Michael) Nash of Roodhouse;
three granddaughters, Amy, Amber and Amanda; two step grandsons, Rich
and James; one step great grandson, Blake; and one nephew, Albert Short
of Winchester. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Short and
one brother, Herschel Short.
Mr. Short was a local building contractor in the White
Hall-Roodhouse area for over 50 years and was the owner and operator of
Short Builders in Roodhouse for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000)
at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the White
Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at
the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Passavant Area Hospital
Chaplain Fund or Westfair Christian Academy.
Mr. Harold J. Simons
Harold J. Simons, 85, of Springfield, died late Friday evening, September 8, 2000 at Regency Nursing Care Center in Springfield.
He was born on April 2, 1915, in St. Louis, the son of Frank George and Marie Kus Simons. He married Ethel F. Dawdy on may 15, 1937, and she preceded him in death on August 14, 2000.
Mr. Simons is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Susan; one son, Tommy; one infant son and one brother, Frank George Simons Jr.
Mr. Simons was a shoe designer for Brown’s Show Company for 45 years. He retired in 1978. He was an avid boater and had been involved in scouting.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, September 23, at New Bethlehem Cemetery in St. Louis. The Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.
