Mrs. Ethel F. Simons (Dawdy)
Ethel F. Dawdy Simons, 87, of Springfield died Monday evening, August 14, 2000 at The Regency in Springfield. She was born on April 19, 1913 in Hillview, Illinois the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Florence Ford Dawdy. She married Harold Simons on May 15, 1937 and he survives.
She is survived by one sister, Leona Marsh of Pana; and several nieces and nephews in the area. She was preceded in death by three children, Tommy, Susan and one child in infancy, two sisters Dovey M. Dawdy Stout and Lula Anderson, and two brothers, Ralph Dawdy and Raymond Dawdy.
Mrs. Simons graduated from White Hall High School in 1931 and Washington University School of Nursing in 1934. She served as school nurse for Hazelwood School District in St. Louis, retiring in August of 1978.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 in the Chapel at Regency Nursing Care Residence, 2120 West Washington, Springfield. Friends may call from noon until 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Bethlehem Cemetery, 9650 Bellefontaine Road, St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to Hazelwood PTA Scholarship Foundation, c/o Hazelwood School District, Dr. David Shelton, 15955 New Halls Ferry Road, Florissant, Missouri, 63031.

Mr. Orrin I. Sims
Orrin Irvin Sims, 87 of Waverly, died Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Pleasant Hill Village in Gerard.
He was born December 26, 1912, in North Otter Township, Macoupin County, the son of Roy Irvin and Vernetta Jane Deatherage Sims. He married Helen mae Lively on November 19, 1932 in Carrollton, and she preceded him in death on July 13, 1966.
He is survived by one son: Van I. (wife, Betty) of Chatham; one daughter: Gloria Jean (husband, Cliffford) Lowery of Girard; four grandsons; one granddaughter; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Mr. Sims was a Morgan County Deputy Sheriff for 15 years, and Sexton of Waverly East Cemetery for 25 years. He was a member of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2000 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, with burial at Waverly East Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Waverly East Cemetery or Waverly Rescue Squad.

Mr. Robert Dale Sipes
Robert Dale Sipes, 58, of Jacksonville died Friday afternoon, January 26, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on May 2, 1942 near Winchester, the son of Elmer Lee and Mildred Virginia Rutledge Sipes. He married Barbara Ingram on June 17, 1962 at Alsey and she survives.
He is also survived by four sons: Robert Bryant (wife, Teresa) Sipes of Alsey, Michael Brent (wie, Amy) Sipes of Jacksonville, and Jason Scott Sipes and Jeremiah Ingram Sipes, both at home; four grandchildren; his mother of Patterson; two brothers, Richard (wife, Linda) Sipes of Mt. Sterling and Darryl (wife, Carolyn) Sipes of Springfield, Missouri; and one sister, Dorothy Hausmann of Bonne Terre, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Howard Sipes.
Mr. Sipes was employed with United Parcel Service for over 30 years. He had owned and operated Sunnyview Shelter Care Home in Jacksonville from 1975-1980 and Howard Johnson’s in Jacksonville from 1980-1993. he was a member AMBUCS in Jacksonville, Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville and had been a member and deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Alsey, before coming to Jacksonville.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, two miles south of Alsey, with burial at Pine Tree Cemetery at Patterson. Friends may call after noon on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Carmi Children’s Home in Carmi.

Violet C. Smallwood (Spicer)
Violet C. Smallwood, 75, of Ashland died Friday morning, December 8, 2000 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born on January 4, 1925 in Versailles, the daughter of Charles A. and Marjorie Ellen Butler Spicer. She married Leslie Smallwood on February 27, 1968 in Normal and he survives in Ashland.
Also surviving are one son, Terry W. Neese of Taylorville; four grandchildren, six great-granchildren, and two brothers, Leo Larue (wife, Mary) Spicer and W. Wayne (wife, Beverly) Spicer both of Ashland. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles L. and Herschel Spicer.
Mrs. Smallwood was a homemaker and enjoyed piecing quilts, embroidering and cooking.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at the Versailles Westside Cemetery. The family will meet friends just prior to the service at the cemetery. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Iva Ann Smith (Gregory)
Iva Ann Smith, 94, of Jacksonville died Saturday morning, July 29, 2000 at Jacksonville Convalescent Center. She was born on November 27, 1905 in Scott County, the daughter of Monroe and Sibba Davis Gregory. She married Charles A. Smith in Winchester and he preceded her in death in 1949.
She is survived by two nieces, Roberta (husband, Don) Murphy and Imojean Garrison both of Jacksonville and two nephews, Robert (wife, Virginia) Gregory and Larry Brumley both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Gregory, Wesley Gregory, and Alonzo Gregory.
Mrs. Smith had been a nurse at Barton W. Stone Christian Home. She was a member of Bloomfield Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Winchester City Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to services. Memorials are suggested to Bloomfield Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mary Addibelle Smith (Carrel)
Mary Addibelle Smith, age 72, of Chambersburg, Ill. died early Wednesday morning (June 14, 2000) at the Pittsfield Manor Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Ill..
She was born November 22, 1927 in Pittsfield, Ill. daughter of the late Roy E. and Martha E. McKinney Carrel.
She married Robert Smith on September 16, 1945 in Pittsfield, Ill. and he survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Nancy Jane Caton of Chambersburg, Ill.; four sons, Carrel W. Smith and wife Debbie and Theodore M. Smith and wife Jody both of Griggsville, Ill., Jonathan R. Smith and wife Cindy of Rushville, Ill., and Stephen J. Smith and wife Terri of Chambersburg, Ill.; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Ann) Middleton and Fay Armstrong both of Decatur, Ill. and Mrs. Richard (June) Heightman of Pittsfield, Ill.; one brother, Raymond Carrel of Del Rio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Dale Smith; one daughter, Catherine Sue Smith; one sister, Ruth Smith; and one brother, Franklin E. Carrel.
Mrs. Smith was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, Ill. and had worked as a telephone operator in Griggsville, Ill. and Pittsfield, Ill. for a few years.
She was a Literacy Volunteer for many years and was a past Township Supervisor for Flint Township and a former election judge for the township.
She was a member of the Griggsville Regular Baptist Church in Griggsville, Ill. and enjoyed gardening and bird watching.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday (June 17, 2000) at the Griggsville Regular Baptist Church in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. Dennis Will, Rev. Vale Walkington, and Rev. Scott Womble officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to the Griggsville Regular Baptist Church or to the Chambersburg Christian Church c/o the funeral home.

Mrs. Mary W. Smith (Witham)
Mary W. Smith, 88, of Jacksonville and formerly of the Pisgah community died early Sunday morning, June 4, 2000 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. She was born on September 14, 1911 in Russell County, Kentucky the daughter of Charles W. and Josie Mann Witham. She married William Earl Smith on April 11, 1931 in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on December 18, 1988.
She is survived by one son, John (wife, Rheta) Smith of Jacksonville; four daughters, Mrs. Dodie (husband, Richard) Gillis and Mrs. Mary Louise (husband, James) Doolin, both of Jacksonville, Mrs. Barbara Jean (husband, Dennis) Burress of Decatur, and Beverly Madding of Atlanta, Georgia; thirteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ed Witham of Jacksonville, Raymond Witham of O’Fallon, and Albert Witham of St. Petersburg, Florida; and two sisters, Betty Robinson and Marjorie Witham, both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Smith was employed at Nesco Company during World War II and then Bound To Stay Bound Book Bindery, from which she retired. She had been a member of Union Baptist Church at Pisgah.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Union Baptist Cemetery at Pisgah. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Union Baptist Cemetery at Pisgah or St. John’s Hospice.

Mrs. Eleanor E. Smith (Fitzjarrell)
Eleanor E. Smith, age 90, of White Hall, died Wednesday afternoon,
Nov. 15, 2000 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.
She was born July 14, 1910 in White Hall, the daughter of Lawrence
and Olive Nesbit Fitzjarrell.
She married Earl F. “Itchem” Smith in White Hall, and he preceded
her in death on Sept. 10, 1991.
She was the last of her immediate family. She is survived by one
cousin, William (wife, Julie) Nesbit of Chicago; a sister-in-law, Ella Smith
of White Hall; eight nieces and nephews, Lora Dilks, Linda Sturgeon and
Margaret Alexander, all of White Hall; Evelyn Smith of Scottville; Clarence
Smith and Harold Smith, both of White Hall; Ronald Smith and Bill Smith,
both of Roodhouse. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the White Hall First United Methodist
Church and Royal Neighbors of America.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000
at the White Hall Cemetery. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White
Hall is in charge of arrangements.

John F. Smith
John F. Smith, 66, of Jacksonville died Saturday morning, September 23, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born April 20, 1934 the son of Frank and Alsie Brumbly Smith. He married Arvella Brandt in Mt. Vernon and she survives.
He is also survived by two sons, John Smith of Texas and Frank (wife,Gail) Smith of Chicago; one daughter, Sarita Smith of Chicago; two grandchildren, Rudy Zaragoza and Angela Smith whom were raised in his home; two brothers, Fred Smith of St. Louis and Roydell Smith of Mt.Vernon and one sister, Evelyn Lance of Florida.
Mr. Smith had served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Private services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Estella M. Smith
Estella M. Smith, of Jacksonville died Saturday afternoon, November 11, 2000 at Modern Care Convalescent Facility. She was born in Jacksonville the daughter of Elmer and Irene DeFraites Smith. She married John R. Smith, Sr. on August 25, 1928 in Missouri and they were married for over 70 years. He preceded her in death on December 24, 1998.
She is survived by one son, John R. Smith, Jr. of Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Donna (husband, Dean) Robinson of Joliet and Shirley (husband, Don) Lewis of Jacksonville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Manwarren of Princeville and Maxine Hendricks of Peoria. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a longtime member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at East Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.

Mrs. Ella Frances Smith (McMillen)
Ella Frances Smith, age 84, of White Hall, died Thursday evening,
Nov. 23, 2000 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
She was born May 11, 1916 in Hillview, the daughter of Charles
Winniford and Margaret May Gibson McMillen.
She married Harold R. Smith on May 16, 1936 in White Hall and he
preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1976.
She is survived by four sons, Clarence (wife, Jane) Smith and Harold
(wife, Betty) Smith, both of White Hall; Ronald (wife, Cookie) Smith and
William (wife, Mary) Smith, both of Roodhouse; four daughters, Evelyn
(husband, Keith) Smith of Scottville; Margaret Alexander, Linda (husband,
Kenneth) Sturgeon and Lora (husband, Rick) Dilks, all of White Hall; 31
grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; three brothers, Harold McMillen and
Gary McMillen, both of Manchester and Virgil McMillen of Hardin; and
one sister, Betty McGee of Murrayville. She was preceded in death by three
sons, John, Thomas and Donald Smith; one great grandson, Wyatt Russell
Crain; two brothers, Charles and Clarence McMillen and three sisters,
Wanita Thixton, Goldie Talkington and Peggy McMillen.
Mrs. Smith was of the Baptist faith and had attended the Calvary
Baptist Church in White Hall. She was a cook at several restaurants in
White Hall and helped operate her husband’s trucking company for many
years. She enjoyed bingo, quilting and family gatherings.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday (Nov. 27, 2000) at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the White
Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at
the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Green e County Visiting
Nurses.

Margie Smothers (Pence)
Margie Pence Smothers, 96, of White Hall died at 8:10 P.M. on Friday
Dec. 8, 2000 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
Born on Feb. 29, 1904 she was the daughter of the late Al and Belle
Powell Pence.
On April 15, 1926 she married George “Murl” Smothers in Winchester
and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1989.
Surviving are a niece: Charlotte Britton of Cottage Hills and several
nephews and nieces on her husband’s side of the family.
Mrs. Smothers was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Gertie F. Pence and
Mary Pence Claywell and 2 brothers: William C. and George L. Pence.
She was a member of the Hillview Baptist Church, an over 50 year
member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
Visitation will be from 2 P.M. until 3 P.M. on Monday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Services will be at 3 P.M. on
Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the White Hall Cemetery.
Memorials are to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Vernon Lee Solomon
Vernon Lee Solomon, 74, of Palmyra, died Wednesday July 5, 2000 in a vehicular accident in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. he was born July 13, 1925 in rural Palmyra, a son of Lee and Nola Maggie Cole Solomon. he married Carol Jean Loveless on July 15, 1960 in Sherman, Illinois and she was killed in the same accident.
Surviving are one son: Gary A. Andy Solomon of Palmyra; one daughter: Terry (husband Ray) Baber of York Arizona, two grandsons: Andrew and William Baber, two brothers: Cyril; (wife Mardell) Solomon of Palmyra, Paul (wife Phyllis) Solomon of Carthage, Indiana, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Evan, in infancy.
Mr. Solomon owned and operated a gas station and body shop in Palmyra from 1961 to 1987, was currently working in maintenance at University of Illinois, Springfield, and was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the European theater. he was also a member of Honda Riders Club, Chapter 15 of Jacksonville; Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association Chapter T of Springfield, Palmyra American Legion Post # 1034, and Palmyra Christian Church.
Joint Funeral Services for Mr. and Mrs. Solomon will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Camp Butler Cemetery in Springfield. Memorials are suggested to Northwestern Rescue Squad or Palmyra Volunteer Fire Department.
