Mrs. Barbara Meyer Abernathy
Barbara Meyer Abernathy, 91, of Concord died Monday morning, March 26, 2001 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was born on November 23, 1909 in Concord the daughter of Charles and Minnie Sanders Meyer. She married E. Wilbur Abernathy on October 9, 1937 in Bowling Green , Missouri and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1999.
She is survived by one daughter, Jill (husband, Bill) Johnson of Nokesville, Virginia; one son, Mark (wife, Cathy) Abernathy of Bakersfield, California; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one sister, Elizabeth “Janie” Slebodo of Tampa, Florida. She was preceded in death by one son, Gary Michael Abernathy; one brother, Joe Meyer and three sisters, Kathy Ormiston, Mignon “Toni” Truax, and Dorothy Monypenny.
Mrs. Abernathy attended Concord schools, graduated from Arenzville High S chool, received her Bachelor of Arts at MacMurray College and did graduate work at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, New Mexico. She had taught school at Joy Prairie School, east of Concord; Triopia School, and Jonathan Turner Junior High School in Jacksonville. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Abernathy assisted her husband on the family farm at Concord. Her passion was raising and training ponies and horses, and flowers and gardening. After retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2001 at the Concord Christian Church with burial at Concord Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.; and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Woodhaven Stroke Support Group or Concord Christian Church.
Louis Aceto
Louis Aceto, Jr., 43, of Jacksonville died Wednesday afternoon February 14, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born May 3, 1957 in Chicago the son of Louis and Sylvia Gervasi Aceto.
He is survived by his father of Wisconsin, his mother Sylvia Deck of Chardon, Ohio, maternal grandmother, Mary Guerrieri of Chardon, Ohio, one brother, Peter (wife, Lisa) Aceto of Chicago, one sister, Teresa Sullivan of Chicago, one niece and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James Gervasi and paternal grandparents, Peter and Teresa Aceto.
Mr. Aceto was of the Catholic faith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Emmanuel East Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Mr. Lloyd E. Acree
Lloyd E. Acree, 87, of Springfield died early Saturday morning, April 7, 2001 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on June 11, 1913 in Fry, Kentucky the son of Rev. John and Mattie McMahan Acree. He married Anna Mae Green on December 12, 1932 in Bramlett, Kentucky and she preceded him in death on May 24, 1983. He then married Flo Hannel McCarthy on April 25, 1986 in Springfield and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Kenneth (wife, Joann) Acree and two daughters, JoAnn (husband, Ron) Stubblefield and Janie (husband, Jim) Ward, all of Jacksonville; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Andy (wife, Ruby) Acree of Springfield; two step-children, Patrick Todd (wife, Cindy) McCarthy of Woodridge and Thomas McCarthy of Las Vegas; and one half-sister, Donna Myer of Jacksonville.
Mr. Acree was preceded in death by three sons, James C. “J.C.” Acree (surviving wife Helen of Jacksonvlle), William A. “Bob” Acree (surviving wife Sandra of Jacksonville), and Rickie Lee Acree.
Mr. Acree was a carpenter and 35-year member of Carpenter’s Local 904, where he had served as an officer and trustee. Prior to becoming a carpenter, Mr. Acree had farmed in Kentucky, Tallula, Waverly, and Philadelphia. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Springfield and had been a longtime member of Westfair Baptist Church in Jacksonville. Mr. Acree enjoyed music and playing the bass guitar, having played with the Cumberland Mountain Boys (now Country Squires). He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and flowers, and most of all, spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. Friends may call after noon on Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Morgan County Cancer Transportation Fund or Hospice Care of Central Illinois.
Mr. John Edward Adams
John Edward Adams, 51, of rural Jacksonville died Sunday evening, April 8, 2001 at his residence. He was born on June 10, 1949 in Jacksonville the son of Tom and Stella J. Adams. He married Susan VanMeter on October 19, 1970 and she survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Chad Adams and Steven Adams, both of Jacksonville; his mother of Jacksonville; his father-in-law, Karl VanMeter of Jacksonville; four brothers, Robert L. (wife, Marcelle) Adams of Jacksonville, Kenneth (wife, Jan) Adams of Chico, California, Harold (wife, Pam) Adams of Tallahasee, Florida, and Charles (wife, Barb) Adams of Jacksonville; and six sisters, Mary Rose of Ashland, Ruth (husband, Mervan) Bettis of Jacksonville, Carole (husband, Paul) Rose of Pittsfield, Susan (husband, Bruce) Tweedy of Meredosia, Doris (husband, David) Snyder and Nancy (husband, Ray) Allen, both of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Adams worked for Wareco in Jacksonville, and had earlier been employed by Robert Black at the Blackhawk. He served in the United States Army and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. Mrs. Helen Fern Allan (Smith)
Helen Fern Allan, 78, of Waverly, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on September 22, 1922 in Manchester, Illinois, the daughter of Hardin and Etta Mae Gray Smith. She married Harold LeRoy Allan on April 26, 1941 in Bowling Green , Missouri, and he survives.
Also surviving are one son, Gilbert (wife, Janice) Allan of Jacksonville; one daughter Phyllis (husband, Donald) Fricke of Jacksonville, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: Claude Smith, Leon Smith, Willis Smith, Bill Smith, and one brother, Ted Smith, in his youth; two sisters: Mayola Grant and Margaret Edwards.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Devoting her time to her family. She was a member of the Lynnville Christian Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, with the family receiving friends from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville or the Donor’s Choice.
Mr. William Agnew Allen
William A. Allen, 84, of Brentwood, California died Monday morning, July 30, 2001 at Santa Monica – UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica. He was born on February 5, 1917 in Waverly the son of Charles F. and May Agnew Allen. He married Miriam Cowgur on July 28, 1944 and she preceded him in death on November 23, 1984.
Mr. Allen is survived by one son, William Andrew Allen of Marina Del Rey, California. He was preceded in death by one half-brother, Hugo Allen.
Mr. Allen received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Illinois College and his M.S. Degree from Purdue University. He served as a Naval Ordinance Officer with the United States Navy during World War II. In 1958 Mr. Allen received a gemologist degree from the The Gemological Institute of America and in 1959 moved his family to California where he became a staff member of the Gem Institute in Santa Monica. He traveled the West Coast as a diamond lecturer and instructor.
In addition to his work with the Gem Institute, Mr. Allen owned Mart Jewelers in Brentwood until his retirement in 1988. William developed many warm friendships with clients and celebrities over 35 years of business. He carried that same warmth of spirit into retirement as he worked tirelessly as a supporter of wildlife conservation. He traveled to such exotic locations as Africa, India, Nepal, and China.
Private graveside rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. Friends may call after 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to any wildlife society or the charity of choice.
Mrs. Millie Lucille Anderson (Heaton)
Mildred "Millie" Lucille Anderson, 83, of Waverly, Illinois, died Friday afternoon, December 7, 2001 in Pleasant Hill Village Nursing Home in Girard, IL.
She was born April 17, 1918 in Thayer, IL. a daughter of Ira and Minnie Edwards Heaton. She married Robert Anderson, July 17, 1955 in Tupelo, Mississippi, and he survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Henry (wife Marcella) Couturiaux of Waverly and Clayton Anderson of Waverly; two daughters, Helen (husband Charles) Pipkin of Nilwood, IL. and Jeanette (husband Russell) Barnard of Scottville, IL.; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one sister Viola Allen of Auburn, IL. She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Couturiaux, Jr. who was killed in Viet Nam in 1969; and three brothers, Charles, Richard, and Albert Heaton.
Mrs Anderson was a member of Waverly Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois, with burial in Waverly East Cemetery, Waverly, IL. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until time of services Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Waverly Rescue Squad.
Mr. Albert "Andy" Andrews
Albert “Andy” Andrews, 82, of South Jacksonville died Sunday evening, May 20, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on November 21, 1918 at Sinclair, Morgan County the son of Ernest George and May Mary Butler Andrews. He married Betty B. Garrett on February 24, 1946 in Jacksonville and she preceded him in death on February 2, 1987.
He is survived by one son, Freddie Albert (wife, Vicky) Andrews of Jacksonville; three daughters, Sandra Eddinger of Winchester, and Barbara Austin-Burton (husband, Terry) and Cathy Andrews, both of Jacksonville; ten grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Eva Birchard of Mosinee, Wisconsin and Ethel (husband, Herb) Baumgardner of Lansing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Andrews was preceded in death by three sisters, May Stewart, Esther Blake, and Beatrice Mills; and three brothers, Alfred Andrews, Ernest Andrews, and Frank Andrews (surviving wife Mary Margaret of Pekin.)
Mr. Andrews began working C.W.Grant Department Store on the east side of the square prior to joining the United States Marines in 1942 and serving in the South Pacific until 1946. After his discharge from the Marines, “Andy” returned to C.W.Grants and later was employed at Howard Davidson’s Dinner Club east of Jacksonville. He then drove a bread truck for Amhreines Bakery in Jacksonville, working his way up to district manager. He entered the tavern business in 1963 when he bought into Lahey’s Tavern with Russ Lahey. This tavern was located on the northeast corner of the square and remained in operation until it burned in the late ‘60’s. It was at this time that Mr. Andrews opened “Andy’s” Tavern on east State Street, a business he operated until his retirement in 1982.
As a tavern owner, “Andy” was well-known in the community, especially his fundraising endeavors to benefit local charities. An avid golfer, he was host of the annual “Andy’s Open Golf Outing,” and as one of the first members of the local AMBUCS, was instrumental in organizing the first AMBUCS auction, benefiting Pathway School, of which “Andy” was one of the founders and served on its first Board of Directors. “Andy” was known to auction the clothes off his body to raise funds for Pathway.
“Andy” had been active in many organizations in Jacksonville including the Jacksonville Elks Lodge, VFW Post 1379, Loyal Order of the Moose, AmVets Post 100, and American Legion Post 1379. He was of the Episcopalian faith.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Triopia School Foundation, where “Andy’s” great-grandchildren attend.
Donald Angle
Donald Angle, 86, of Carrollton died at 8 A.M. on Saturday Nov. 10,
2001at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born in Woodville Twp. on July 13, 1915 he was the son of the late
Richard and Ella Black Angle.
On June 26, 1943 he married the former Ada Mae Rainwater in St.
Charles, Mo. and she preceded him in death on June 30, 2000.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Mrs. John “Sandy” Cooper of Chatham and
Mrs. Larry “Ada Renee” Hubbard of Chatham, 2 sons: Larry (wife Martha)
Angle of Carrollton and Joe (wife Becky) Angle of Carrollton, there are 10
Grandchildren and 9 Great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister Martha Angle and a brother
Hayden Angle.
Mr. Angle was a World War II Veteran of the Army Air Corps who
flew 28 combat missions in the Pacific Theatre. He was a past director for 6
years of the Green e Co. Farm Bureau, 25 years a member of the Woodville
Twp. Board with 20 years as Clerk for the township, and was a 30 year
member of the Mt. Gilead Cemetery Board. He was a farmer who loved his
family and with his loving wife instilled in his children a strong sense of self,
family, honesty, humility and humor.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Monday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton where services will be held on Tuesday
at 10 A.M. Burial will follow in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery and memorials
may be made to Reisch Memorial Nursing Home.
Mr. Clyde W. Ashbaugh
Clyde W. Ashbaugh, 73, of Waverly, died on Thursday, June 28, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was born on December 1, 1927 in Waverly, a son of James Frederick and Elsie Mae Austin Ashbaugh. He married Shirley A. Sexton on June 20, 1954 in Waverly and she survives. Also surviving are one son, James (wife, Tracy) Ashbaugh of Waverly; one granddaughter, Savanna Ashbaugh of Waverly; one brother, Merlyn Ashbaugh of Girard; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Chester and Austin Ashbaugh.
Mr. Ashbaugh was a retired barber in Virden, practicing for 38 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Korea. He was a life member of the NRA, The Muzzleloaders Association; Antioch Mountain Boys; VFW in Waverly; Waverly American Legion; and the 45th Division. He was a Boy Scout Leader for 18 years; President of Waverly Little League for two years; an alderman for the city of Waverly for four terms. He served for 30 years on the Waverly rescue Squad and 30 years on the Waverly Fire Department and was a lifetime member of Waverly United Methodist Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2001 at the Waverly United Methodist Church. The family will meet friends at the church on Saturday, June 30, 2001 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the VFW or the Methodist Church Elevator Fund. The Neece Funeral Home in Waverly is serving the family.
Jane A. Asher (Gier)
Jane A. Asher, 69, of St. Louis died at 3:10 A.M. on Sunday March 25,
2001 at DePaul Medical Center in Bridgeton, Mo.
Born on May 2, 1931 in St. Louis she was the daughter of the late Charles
and Hester Kessinger Gier.
She married Lowell Asher in 1990 and he preceded her in death in 1995.
Surviving are step children, an uncle Charles Kessinger of Wrights and
several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services will be conducted in the Hickory Grove Cemetery
near Wrights on Thursday at 1 P.M. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of
Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.
Clarence E. Baird
Clarence E. Baird, 94, of rural Winchester passed away late Friday night (November 2, 2001) at Hannibal regional Hospital in Hannibal, Missouri.
He was born September 8, 1907 in Scott County the son of the late Alonzo Calvin and Margaret Edwards Baird.
He married Ruth Irene Jones November 12, 1924 in Winchester.
She preceded him in death August 8, 1992. He was also preceded in death by a son Derald (surviving wife Helen Baird of rural Winchester), a brother Edward Baird and 3 sisters Zelma McDade, Ella Shafer and Alma Summers.
Surviving is his son Donald (wife Gwen) Baird of Manchester, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Baird attended country school in Scott County. He was a farmer in Scott County his entire life.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday (November 6, 2001) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.
Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4:00 PM Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Verna M. Baker (McDade)
Verna M. Baker, 94, of Carrollton died at 1:10 P.M. on Wednesday July
18, 2001 at her residence.
Born in Olney, Ill. on Jan. 21, 1907 she was the daughter of the late Allen
and Myrtle Ireland McDade.
She married Rufus Baker on Oct. 28, 1924 in Pekin and he preceded her
in death on Jan. 31, 1989.
Surviving are a son Clayton Baker of Jacksonville, 6 daughters: Eileen
Hardwick of Jerseyville, Phyllis Vahle Kaiser of Alton, Esther Burger of
Carrollton, Evelyn Hardwick of Arasas Pass, Texas, Wanda Hall of
Carrollton and Mrs. Bill “Barbara” Howland of Carrollton. There are 24
grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 20 great granchildren surviving.
She was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Verna attended Believers’ Baptist Church near Carrollton and lived
most of her life with her husband in Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 9 A.M. until service time at 11 A.M. on
Saturday at the Believers’ Baptist Church on Woodville Rd. south of
Carrollton. Burial will follow in Noble Cemetery in Otterville. Memorials
may be made to the Believers’ Baptist Church. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home
in Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Virginia Gail Baker (Ward)
Virginia Gail Ward Baker, age 82, of rural Pittsfield, Ill. died late Wednesday evening (May 2, 2001) at the Westmont Convalescent Center in Westmont, Ill. following a lengthy illness.
She was born October 31, 1918 in Aurora, Nebraska daughter of the late Floyd and Lucy Foreman Ward and raised in Martinsburg, Ill..
She married Paul W. Baker on September 1, 1940 in Pike County, Ill. and he survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Linda) Gibbons of Western Springs, Ill. and Mrs. Kingery (Laura) Clingenpeel of Edwardsburg, Michigan; five grandchildren, Joel Gibbons and wife Rochelle of Indianapolis, Indiana, Timothy and David Gibbons both of Western Springs, Ill., Caleb Clingenpeel of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and Mrs. Ryan (Rebekah) Craven of Nashville, Michigan; three brothers, Glenn Ward and wife Mary Ann of Berwyn, Ill., Charles Ward and wife Evelyn of Pittsfield, Ill., and E. Wayne Ward and wife Carol Ann of Pleasant Hill, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Baker was a graduate of Higbee High School and was employed by the State of Illinois Department of Public Aid for 37 years. She was a 4-H leader for the Pittsfield Lucky Clovers for fifteen years, and was a member of Nancy Ross chapter of the DAR, Pike County Country Couples, Fireside Friends, and the Pike Promenaders . She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and her grandchildren. She was a member of the Detroit Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday (May 7, 2001) at the Detroit Christian Church in Detroit, Ill. with Dr. Kingery Clingenpeel officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Family will meet with friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch c/o the funeral home.
