Mary J. Beebe (Voiles)
Mary J. Beebe, 84, of Carrollton died at 12:45 P.M. on Wed. July 18,
2001 at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born in Texhoma, Texas on June 29, 1917 she was the daughter of the
late Florus O. and Addie Haddock Voiles.
She married Ivan Beebe who preceded her in death on May 24, 1990.
Surviving her are a brother: Florus “Specks” Voiles of Carrollton and 2
nieces: Julie Eschbach of Roodhouse and Mary Thelma Friday of Rochester.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton and taught
Sunday School there for many years.
Private graveside rites will be held at a later date. Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Carl Bell
Carl Bell, age 77, of Patterson, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 14,
2001 at his residence.
He was born Jan. 28, 1924 in Donovan, Missouri, the son of James
Elzie and Edna Mae Carbor Bell.
He married Kathryn Irvine on May 13, 1975 in Van Buren, Missouri
and she survives.
He is also survived by seven sons, Charles Bell and Carl Bell, both of
Columbia, MO; Randy Bell, Cecil Bell and James Bell, all of DeSoto, MO;
Aaron Bell of Pleasant Hill; and Robert Bell of Booneville, MO; five
daughters, JoAnn Gillen of Kingman, Kansas; Linda Peterson of
Independence, MO; Carla Dunigan of Hutchinson, Kansas; Jennifer Kassing
of Medora and Carlleen Bell of Patterson; nineteen grandchildren; nine
great grandchildren; four brothers, Roy Bell of Grafton; Olen Bell of
Walterboro, South Carolina; Stan Bell of Carnation, Washington and Lee
Bell of Charleston, South Carolina; one half-sister, Elsie Hill of San
Antonio, Texas and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by one daughter, Judy and two sisters, Faye Doane and Verna Cornett.
Mr. Bell worked at Blake Sawmill and other sawmills, working in the
timber his entire life. He attended the Calvary Baptist Church in White
Hall.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001
at the Fieldon Cemetery in Fieldon. Friends may call from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are
suggested to the family.
Arthur J. Benz
Arthur J. Benz, 89, of Carrollton formerly of Kampsville died at 4:30
A.M. on Wednesday Jan. 31, 2001 at Christian Hospital Northeast in St.
Louis.
Born in Kampsville on July 21, 1911 he was the son of the late Joseph
and Maria Marsching Benz.
He first married Theresa Corbett and she preceded him in death in Dec. of
1974. He later married Loretta Suhling on Nov. 8, 1975 and she preceded
him on June 27, 1992.
Surviving are 3 sons: James (wife-Mary) Benz of Quincy, Tom
(wife-JoAn) Benz of Kane and Daniel (wife- Sharon) Benz of Woodbine,
Md. A step daughter: Patsy Smith of St. Louis survives, as does 7
grandchildren: Sherri (Chuck) MacLean, Cindy (Jim) Keneipp, Laura
(Terry)Woodring, Emily Benz, Tim (Megan) Benz, Sue (Mark) Wild and
Kim (Paul) Brake, 10 great grandchildren, a brother Fred Benz of Carrollton,
and 2 sisters: Ann Halsey of Pittsfield and Marie Wyatt of Hardin. A dear
and special friend Alice Vandergriff of Carrollton also survives.
He was preceded in death by a son Paul Benz, an infant daughter Mary
Ellen Benz, 2 sisters: Sophia Klaas and Katherine Tepen, and 3 brothers:
Joseph, Aloys and Frank Benz.
Mr. Benz was a retired farmer and member of St. John’s Catholic
Church in Carrollton and a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home
in Carrollton. Mass will be celebrated on Sat. at 10 A.M. at St. John’s
Catholic Church in Carrollton with burial in St. Anselm’s Cemetery in
Kampsville. Memorials are mentioned to : St. John’s Church, Green e Co.

Mrs. Pat Bergman (Hill)
Pat Bergman, age 72, of Perry, Ill. died early Monday morning (September 17, 2001) at her residence.
She was born November 29, 1928 in Quincy, Ill. daughter of the late Daniel Otis and Patricia Elizabeth Hayes Hill.
She married Don Bergman on August 14, 1948 in Quincy, Ill. and he survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Rosanne Reid of Normal, Ill., Leah Priest and husband Tim of Jacksonville, Ill., Sally Hodgson and husband Gary of Beverly, Ill.; three sons, Dennis Bergman and wife Amy of Washington, North Carolina, Mark Bergman of Jacksonville, Ill., Tom Bergman and wife Martha of Southern Pines, North Carolina; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father Clarence Gauch Sr.; two sons, Gregory and Timothy Bergman; one brother, Clarence Gauch.
Mrs. Bergman was a graduate of Quincy High School. She volunteered her time with several organizations such as Perry American Legion Auxiliary, American Red Cross; as a Pike County EMT, Teen Court, Pike County Hospice, Boy Scouts of America, as well as several other organizations. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling, Ill. and a member of the Legion of Mary. She was church organist at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Griggsville, Ill. for several years.
Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling, Ill. with Fr. Louis Schlangen as celebrant. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Perry, Ill.. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where family will meet with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.. Rosary service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Pike County, or to the Perry American Legion Auxiliary. A dinner will be served for family and friends following the service Friday at the Perry United Methodist Church in Perry, Ill.. Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Robert F. Bergschneider
Robert F. Bergschneider, 87, of Franklin died early Friday, July 20, 2001 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on May 17, 1914 at Pisgah the son of Anton and Anna Buhre Bergschneider. He married Lorena M Harwood on March 5, 1946 in Franklin and she preceded him in death on December 18, 1999.
He is survived by one son, Robert (wife, Renee) Bergschneider of Springfield; one daughter, Susie (husband, Pat) Evans of Murrayville; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Vincent Bergschneider; two brothers, Bernard Bergschneider and Paul Bergschneider; two sisters, Anna Louise Bergschneider and Rose Volger; one half-brother Gilbert Bergschneider and one half-sister Donna Neudecker.
Mr. Bergschneider had owned and operated the White House Restaurant in Winchester and farmed in the Franklin Community and also worked for Rees Elevator for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Bergschneider was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Franklin and American Legion Post 1089 in Franklin.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery near Franklin. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville where a prayer service will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, Routt Catholic High School or Our Saviours School.
Miss Helen Louise Berryman
Helen Louise Berryman, 85, of Palmyra, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 in Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, IL. She was born August 18, 1915 in Modesto, the daughter of Wilburn Elvin and Bessie Myrtle Hart Berryman. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Carl S. Berryman, (surviving wife Twyla Berryman of Palmyra) and Raymond Arthur Berryman.
She graduated from Palmyra High School in 1933, and was recording secretary for the Alumni Association. She worked in numerous businesses in Palmyra during her lifetime and servied as village treasurer for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilary Post #1034 in Palmyra, Silver Strands, Terry Park Community Club, and Modesto Household Science Club.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at the Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra. Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra. Memorials are suggested to Palmyra Christian Church or Silver Strands.
Mr. Harold F. Besaw
Harold F. Besaw, age 79, of White Hall, died Thursday, Jan. 11,
2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born May 16, 1921 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of John
Theodore and Golda Lucille Schumacher Besaw.
He is survived by one daughter, Marsha M. (husband, James T.) Shaw
of Carrollton; three sons, James L. Besaw of White Hall, David P. Besaw of
Jerseyville and Dean (wife, Joan) Besaw of Jacksonville; five
grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by three brothers, Victor, Raymond and Earl Besaw; a half-sister, Ursaline
Bradshaw and two half-brothers, Fred and Bill Kaslick.
Mr. Besaw worked at Olin Corp. in Alton for 26 years, retiring in
1978. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, stationed
in the South Pacific for the majority of the war. He was a member of the
VFW in Roodhouse and a member of the Prairieland Heritage Museum in
Jacksonville.
Following cremation, private services will be held. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Douglas Edward Bettis
Douglas E. Bettis, 42, of Lansing, Illinois, formerly Palmyra, Illinois, died Sunday, May 13, 2001 in Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana. He was born December 19, 1958 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Glen Edward and Jean L. Mabus Bettis, who survive of Palmyra, IL.
Also surviving are three sons: Gregory Edward; Jason Michael; and Jeffrey Glen all of Lansing, IL.; two sisters: Marsha (husband Rick) Gibbs of Modesto, IL., and Glenda (husband Leon) Dennis of Roodhouse, IL. and great grandmother Dorothy D. Bettis of Palmyra, IL. He was preceded in death by his paternal great grandfather Melvin Bettis, and his maternal great grandparents Harry Edward and Pearl Mae Mabus.
He was a meat market manager for Walts Food Centers of Tinley Park, Illinois, and a member of Palmyra First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, Illinois. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Palmyra, IL. Mr. Melvin Clyde Bettis
Melvin Clyde Bettis, 92, of Palmyra,Illinois, died Sunday evening, March 4, 2001 in Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, Illinois. He was born July 12, 1908 in Palmyra, Illinois, a son of George Washington Bettis and Dora Frances Shores Bettis. He married Dorothy Dee Fox on December 20, 1928 in Jacksonville, Illinois, and she survives.
Also surviving are: one daughter; Wanda June Ruyle of Orland Park, Illinois; three sons; Glen (wife Jean) Bettis of Palmyra, Illinois; Lester (wife Joyce) Bettis of Carlinville, Illinois; and Norman (wife Sandra) Bettis of Bloomington, Illinois; one sister; Rhea Bristow; of Palmyra, Illinois; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers; Otto; Clarence; Orville; Freddie; Welcome; Carl and Oren in infancy; and five sisters: Ora Pierson; Rae Crawford; Annie Hartsook; Grace Edminston; and Mary in infancy.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Farm Bureau and the First Baptist Church of Palmyra, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home, 201 North Main Street, Palmyra, Illinois. Mr. Arthur Wayne Bettis
Arthur Wayne Bettis, 63, of Franklin, IL., died Thursday, March 22, 2001 in his home in Franklin. He was born March 17, 1938 in Alsey, IL., a son of Elmer Louis and Lillian May Decker Bettis. He married Nora Draughan on December 27, 1955, and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons: Gerald Wayne Bettis (special friend Maureen Brown) of Jacksonville;Timothy Dean (wife Lisa) Bettis of Downs, IL.: two daughters:Tammy Benjamin (fiancee Jerry Barton) of Franklin; Jackie (husband Rodney) Stock of Arenzville, IL. one sister Opal Schofield of Winchester, IL.: three brothers: Lloyd (wife Georgia) Bettis of Modesto, IL., Virgil (special friend Ruth) of Roodhouse, IL., Jim (wife Virginia) Bettis of Alsey, IL., and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Stella Mae Schofield, and Helen Briggs; three brothers: Junior; Clarence Gene; Charles and four in infancy.
He was a Power Plant Supervisor of Generation for the City of Springfield, and served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1967, serving part of that time in Japan. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church of Clovis New Mexico. He was devoted to family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2001 in Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, IL. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001 in the funeral home. Burial will be in Franklin City Cemetery, Franklin, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Hospice of The American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Berneita W. Bevin (Workman)
Berneita W. Bevin, 90, of Waverly died Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville.
She was born on September 9, 1910, in Maxwell Township, in Sangamon County, the daughter of Josiah Webb and Lydia Ann Carson Workman. She married Ralph W. Bivin on February 14, 1932, in Carlinville, and he preceded her in death on May 15, 1976.
She is survived by two daughters: Boni Gail (husband, David) Schoenbacher and Colleen (husband, Dick) Carney, both of Waverly and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Lou Bivin; two brothers, Rome Workman and Howard Workman; four sisters: Maude Workman, Loat Mitchell, Ruth Rakes and Etta Wilcox.
Mrs. Bivin was a member of the Waverly Christian Church and of the Joy Class at the church; a charter member of Sangamon County Home Extension and Sangamon County Farm Bureau; a leader of the Talkington Talkies” 4-H Club for several years; active in the Waverly School District PTA and a room mother for many years; a member of the Waverly Woman’s Club and had been awarded “Mother of the Year. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Tri-County Club.
She and her husband operated a grain and livestock farm and were very active for many years in the American Shorthorn Association and the Arabian Horse Association.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Waverly Christian Church, with burial at the Waverly East Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Waverly Christian Church, Barton Stone Christian Home, Waverly East Cemetery or Campbell Cemetery, or the Waverly Rescue Squad.
