Mrs. Cathy Christine "Chris" Goewey (Flowers)
Cathy Christine “Chris” Goewey, age 43, of Griggsville, Ill. died Saturday evening (June 9, 2001), following a lengthy illness, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill..
She was born September 15, 1957 in Pittsfield, Ill. daughter of the late Darrell and Velma Louise Flowers.
Surviving is one daughter, Jenna Nichole Goewey of Griggsville, Ill. and one son, Joshua Richard Goewey of Perry, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Carole) Seal and Mrs. Watson (Linda) Huddleston both of Griggsville, Ill.; one brother, Max Flowers and wife Patty of Perry, Ill.; her favorite companion, Dawson her cat; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Chris was a daycare worker for most of her life working in various daycare centers. Her hobbies include crafts, collecting teddy bears, woodworking, & painting.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday (June 13, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill.. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon Wednesday until the time of service. Memorials may be made to her children c/o Airsman-Hires Chapel.
Margaret L. "Peggy" Goodin
Margaret Louise “Peggy” Goodin, 82, of Winchester passed away Friday morning at the Scott County Nursing Center.
She was born July 1, 1919 in Tucson, Arizona the daughter of Ray and Gladis Milton Tucker.
She married James L. Goodin July 6, 1944 in Marianna, Florida.
Mrs. Goodin was raised in Mt. Carmel, IL. She received her BA degree from Carthage College in 1941. She completed her post graduate studies at the University of North Dakota.
Mrs. Goodin taught Elementary and High School Science and Math classes for 28 years. She taught in Mt. Carmel, Bluffs and Winchester retiring in 1978.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bluffs. Mrs. Goodin enjoyed designing and sewing Barbie Doll fashions. She loved camping and traveling. She and her husband had traveled every state in the continental United States.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, James Leroy Goodin at home, a daughter Janet L. (husband Rod) Setnes of Phoenix, Arizona; 2 sisters Gene Clark of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Anne Wachs of Mt. Carmel; 1 niece and 5 nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and a son James Keith Goodin (surviving wife Sue of San Jose, California).
Memorial services will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday (July 26, 2001) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.
Private interment will be held at t later date.
Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6:00 until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Scott County Nursing Center.
Miss Irene Goodrich
Irene Goodrich, age 87, of White Hall, died early Thursday morning,
Oct. 18, 2001 at White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
She was born April 5, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of
Lewis O. and Nora Robinson Goodrich.
She is survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Gladys Goodrich.
Miss Goodrich was a member of the White Hall First Christian
Church and a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at
the White Hall First Christian Church with burial at the Rose Hill Cemetery
at Petersburg. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to
the White Hall Multicare Center Activities Fund or the White Hall First
Christian Church.
Mr. James A. Gordon
James Arthur Gordon, 86, of Manchester died Sunday afternoon, November 11, 2001 at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville. He was born on September 22, 1915 in Spokane, Washington, the son of Carl O. and Stella Reaugh Cline Gordon of Jacksonville. He married Glenna Margaret Cuddy on February 2, 1941 in Bowling Green , Missouri and she survives at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville.
Mr. Gordon is also survived by one son, James C. (wife, Phyllis) Gordon of Hinsdale, and one grandson. He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond C. Gordon.
After spending the early part of his life in Washington, Mr. Gordon and his family returned to Jacksonville in 1922. As a young man, Mr. Gordon worked with his father’s auto dealership, Gordon Auto Company Studebaker-Dodge in Jacksonville. Following his marriage, he worked in St. Louis as a helicopter mechanic for Curtis-Wright. He returned to Manchester in 1946 and worked with Black Chevrolet-Olds in White Hall. In 1960, Mr. Gordon went to work with Country Companies, serving as Regional Supervisor for crop hail-insurance until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Gordon was a member of Manchester United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was a member of Manchester (now White Hall) Masonic Lodge A.F.&A.M. for over 50 years, Ansar Shrine and Springfield Consistory; and served on the Scott County School Board from 1956-66. Mr. Gordon had been an Eagle Scout as a young man and was proud of his knowledge from that experience.
Funeral services and Masonic Rites will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Manchester Cemetery in Manchester. The family will meet friends from 9:30 until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Manchester United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Irene Gray (Hartsook)
Irene Gray, 96, of Waverly, died on Friday, January 5, 2001 in Skyview Manor in Jacksonville. She was born on March 4, 1904 in Macoupin County, a daughter of Leland Ellis and Minnie Stults Hartsook. She married Ernest Gray on January 30, 1923 in Morgan County. Surviving are two sons: Allen Gray of Murrayville; Wayne (wife, Alice) Gray of Franklin; one daughter, Shirley (husband, Preston) Turner of Loami; one son-in-law, Clarence Clements of Elmwood, IL; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, three daughters, one grandson, David Gray, two brothers, William and Lee Hartsook and four sisters: Blanche Amrhein. Opal Overbey, Hallie Turner, and Edith McCall.
She was a homemaker and a member of Waverly First Baptist Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at the Waverly First Baptist Church. The family will meet friends from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2001 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Mrs. M. Joan Green wood (Lane)
M. Joan Green wood, 68, of Jacksonville died Thursday morning, May 3, 2001 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was born on June 8, 1932 in rural Shelby County, the daughter of Joseph Paul and Lois Barbee Lane. She married Marion Glenn Green wood on October 24, 1957 in Decatur and he survives in Jacksonville.
Also surviving are four sons, Stanley (wife, Sheri) Green wood of Centralia, Allen (wife, Janet) Green wood of Woodson, Roger (wife, Mary) Green wood of Jacksonville and Jeff (wife, Terri) Green wood of Woodson; one daughter, JoEllen Green wood of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, one great grandson; two brothers, Charles (wife, Nancy) Lane of Shelbyville and Bill (wife, Mary) Lane of Boca Raton, Florida; and three sisters, June (husband, Dave) Allen of Jacksonville, Judy (husband, Jon) Hubbard of Blue Mound and Mary Frances (husband, Ray) Miller of San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Jean Lane.
Mrs. Green wood was a homemaker and had been secretary to the Dean of the College at Illinois College from 1958-1962 and had also been employed at Belobradjdic Bookstore. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and crafts, and most of all, spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2001 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon on Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, Shriner’s Childrens Hospital or St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Mrs. La Vona E. Greer (Miller)
La Vona E. Greer, 79, of Modesto, IL., died Tuesday, September 18, 2001, in her home in Modesto, IL., a daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Ritterbush Miller. She married Gus E. McNeely on October 11, 1943, and he preceded her in death on October 9, 1973. She then married William T. Greer on November 9, 1974, and he survives.
Also surviving are: one daughter, Marilyn (husband James L.) Davenport of New Berlin, IL; two sons;Lowell (wife Donna) McNeely of Modesto, IL., Robert (wife Peggy) McNeely, of Waverly, IL., one stepdaughter; Lana (husband Terry) Ambrose, of Carlinville, IL.; one stepson, Mark (wife Becky) Greer of Carlinville, IL.; two sisters: Maurine (husband Orville) Owens of Virden, IL.; Marie (husband Kendall) Walden of Girard, IL.; one brother; Raymond (wife Denice) Miller of Phoenix, AZ.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Brother Marvin Miller (surviving wife Norma Miller of Virden, IL.) and Kenneth Miller.
She was a very active member of Modesto Baptist Church, and a member of Modesto Household Science Club.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, September 20, 2001 in Oak Grove Cemetery, four miles east of Modesto, IL. on Nine Mile Lane. The family will receive friends at the Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, IL.; on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 from 5 to 8 pm. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Illinois, Silver Strands Senior Citizens, or Northwestern Rescue Squad.
Ella Mae Griswold (McQuerry)
Ella Mae Griswold, 83, of Carrollton died at 10:52 P.M. on Tuesday July
3, 2001 at the Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
Born on Nov. 7, 1917 in Carrollton she was the daughter of the late
Newell and Sallie Dudderar McQuerry.
She was married to Orville E. Griswold in Woodriver on March 20,
1937. They were divorced.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Mrs. Don “Judy” Sample of Carrollton and
Janet K. Booton of St. Louis, Mo., 3 grandchildren: Tony Sample, Connie
Zoller and Angela Gonzales, 4 great grandchildren: Yvonne M. Sample,
Alicia A. Sample, Nathan G. Zoller and Erin E. Zoller, 2 sisters: Jonetta
Maupin of Carrollton, Merrilee DeGuire of LaFollette, Tenn., 2 brothers:
Ersel McQuerry of Vidor, Texas and M.A. McQuerry of Live Oaks, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a daughter: Lois E. Griswold, a grandson:
Jack Anthony Gonzales, Jr., a brother: Newell Junior McQuerry, a sister:
Leola Spurlin and a half brother R.W. “Wes” McQuerry.
She was a member of the Green field Methodist Church, the Order of the
Eastern Star. She had worked as an office secretary for the Green field
Schools for 25 years retiring in 1985.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held on Friday at 10 A.M. at
the funeral home with burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Green field
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Edna Coultas Gustine
Edna Coultas Gustine, 98, a well-known Jacksonville business woman died early Sunday evening, November 4, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born July 29, 1903 in Lynnville the daughter of Oliver and Anna B. Coultas. She married Claude C. Gustine in June of 1927 and he preceded her in death in January of 1965.
Surviving is one daughter, Doris G. (husband, Jack) Fairfield of Scottsdale, Arizona, three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Coultas Nelson of Jacksonville and one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by one son, Claude C. Gustine, Jr.; one brother, Sherman Coultas, and one nephew.
Mrs. Gustine and her husband opened Gustine Furniture on South Main Street in Jacksonville in 1929 and continued to operate the store at the same location for over 60 years. She was a member of Chapter IO, P.E.O., the American Legion Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Passavant Hospital Auxiliary, the Jacksonville Art Association and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gustine was also a member of Central Christian Church.
Mrs. Gustine grew up on a farm and had a great love for horses. She enjoyed traveling and was devoted to her children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Art Association, Barton W. Stone Christian Home, Illinois College, or Central Christian Church.
Mrs. Frances S. Hacker (DeSollar)
Frances S. Hacker, 84, of Quincy and formerly of Jacksonville died Sunday morning, August 26, 2001 at St. Vincents Nursing Home in Quincy. She was born on March 11, 1917 in Chapin the daughter of Albert and Nina Nash DeSollar. She married Ballard “B.J.” Hacker on November 21, 1952 in Miami, Florida and he preceded her in death on March 10, 1990.
She is survived by one step-daughter, Mary J. Hummel of Quincy; one step-son, Harold E. (wife, Priscilla) Hacker of Jacksonville; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Hacker had been a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was of the Methodist faith.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. Vincents Nursing Home or Grace United Methodist Church, both in Quincy. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Charles W. Hall
Charles W. Hall, age 86, of Pittsfield, Ill. died 7 p.m. Friday evening (July 20, 2001) at Pittsfield HealthCare Center in Pittsfield, Ill..
He was born September 13, 1914 in Newburg Township, Pike County, Ill. son of the late Frank A. and Inez Owens Hall.
He married Mazie Sigler on November 24, 1935 in Oakwood, Mo. and they were privileged to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary last November, and she survives.
Also surviving is one sister, Charlotte Bell of Overland Park, Kansas; one brother, Raymond Hall of Clever, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lewis and Wilson Hall; and one sister, Della Larimore.
Mr. Hall attended country school and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1933. He worked for many years at Brown Shoe in Pittsfield, Ill. and retired from Pike County Farm Service (F.S.) Company in 1981 after 28 years. He was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church where he had held the offices of elder, deacon, early morning greeter, and was Man-Of-The-Year for 1989-1990. He was also active in Vacation Bible School. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed bowling. His hobby was Gun-Smithing and he not only worked locally but for local and state police officers, but had friends and customers as far as California. If your gun didn’t work “take it to Charlie”.
He was a past member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and a member of the Antioch Mountain Boys, a muzzle loading club.
“Uncle Charles left many happy and loving memories to his many nieces and nephews. He was a soft spoken man, who loved to rock us when we were small, tell us stories, teach us about his guns, his garden and the things he loved. He has left us with only good memories and he will be greatly missed. “Goodbye, Uncle Charles”.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday (July 29, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pittsfield, Ill..

Mrs. Frances A. Halligan (Hicks)
Frances A. Halligan, 90, of Jacksonville died Tuesday afternoon, July 17, 2001 at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville. She was born on Feburary 7, 1911 in rural Morgan County, the daughter of James and Viola Holt Hicks. She married James T. Halligan and he preceded her in death on December 7, 1988.
She is survived by two daughters, Joyce A. Halligan of Phoenix, Arizona and Patty S. Halligan of Denver, Colorado; four sons, James R. (wife, Margaret) Halligan of Geneva, Florida, William E. (wife, Myrna) Halligan of Williamsville, Missouri, John J. (wife, Ann) Halligan of Arlington, Texas and Gerald D. (wife, Kathy Mouser) Halligan of Jacksonville; 10 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence Marine and Nell Mason both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by one grandson, two brothers, James Hicks and Arthur Hicks, and four sisters, Belva Berry, Mamie Dyer, Winifred Robinson, and Eilene Hacker.
Mrs. Halligan had been employed as a nurse’s aide at Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Antioch Cemetery, near Jacksonville. Friends may call after 12 noon on Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Mr. George Alexander Hamm
George Alexander Hamm, 62, of Carlinville, Illinois, died Sunday, October 14, 2001 in Memorial Medical Center in Springfield,Illinois. He was born May 30, 1939 in Scottville, Illinois, a son of Alexander and Mary Smith Hamm.
Surviving are one daughter: Stella (husband Ronald) Harrison of Marceline, Missouri, eight brothers: Charles (wife Tonnie) Hamm of Litchfield, IL.; Paul (wife Margaret)Hamm of Palmyra, IL.; Bert (wife Rhea) Hamm of Jacksonville, IL.; Bill (wife Bitsy) Hamm of Whitehall, IL.; Walter Hamm of Palmyra, IL.; Ollie (wife Sherry) Hamm of Green field, IL.; Brice (wife Mary) Hamm of Palmyra, IL.; Donnie Hamm of Springfield, IL.; two sisters: Martha (husband George) Kraushaar of Whitehall, IL.; Helen Reichman of Whitehall, IL.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Clarence Hamm; and two sisters: Stella and Mamie Hamm.
He was a truck driver for Slifka Trucking Company of Staunton, IL., and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Carlinville, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 17, 2001 in Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, October 16, 2001. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery, rural Waverly. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Dorothy J. Handy (Helms)
Dorothy J. Handy, 82, of Waverly died Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2001 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. She was born on July 28, 1918 in Tallula, the daughter of William and Ethel McGlasson Helms. She married James H. Handy on June 17, 1941 in Springfield and he survives in Waverly.
She is also survived by one son, Jeff (wife, Chris) Handy of Waverly; one daughter, Patty Handy of Springfield; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Helms of Springfield; one sister, Helen (husband, George) Shaudis of West Hills, California; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Handy, a homemaker, was a graduate of Auburn High School and taught Sunday School in the Kindergarten Class and Bible School at the First United Methodist Church of Waverly for several years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waverly, the Home Extension Unit, the local Pythian Sister Temple and the United Methodist Women.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church of Waverly with the Rev. Guy Keysear officiating. Burial will be at Waverly East Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Waverly where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Waverly Fire and Rescue Squad. The Neece Funeral Home at Waverly is in charge of arrangements.
