Mr. Floyd L. Hargis
Floyd L. Hargis, 92, of New Salem, Ill. died Monday evening (March 12 , 2001) at Pittsfield Manor Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Ill..
He was born May 3, 1909 in Fredrick Town, Mo. son of the late Napoleon and Alice Stacey Hargis.
He married Bessie Gipson in 1934 and she preceded him in death on March 2, 1982. He later married Elizabeth Collins in 1986 and she preceded him in death August 5, 1995.
Surviving is one son, Junior F. Hargis of New Salem, Ill.; one step-son, Wayne Hill of Louisiana, Mo.; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; one step-son, Kenneth Wayne Hill; and one grandchild, Floyd Eugene Hargis; three sisters; and five brothers.
Mr. Hargis was a farm laborer working for Walter Dehart for many years. He was a member of the Pittsfield Nazarene Church and loved to vegetable garden, and was an avid sportsman.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. John Ruzich officiating. Burial will be in Green Pond Cemetery near Pearl, Ill.. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. Thursday until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Fred Harold Hart
Fred Harold Hart, 90, of Jacksonville and formerly of rural Winchester passed away Wednesday morning (April 25, 2001) at Passavant Area Hospital.
He was born December 2, 1910 in Scott County the son of Golden and Sarah Moore Hart.
Mr. Hart attended West Hickory Country School; he was of the Baptist faith. He was employed at Walker Motor Company for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Hart was widely known in the area and respected for his expertise in horseshoe pitching.
Survivors include 5 nephews, Darrell Hart of rural Winchester, Paul Green and Howard “Bud” Walker both of Jacksonville, Earl Tash of Bluffs and Rex Eugene Hart of Winchester. 6 nieces Veta Hornbeck of Harbor Springs, Michigan, Vera Armstrong of Quincy, Wanda Ellis of Moline, Ercelia Wood of Winchester, Leona Swartz of rural Pittsfield and Arlene Barnett of Bluffs. A brother in law Ralph “Tommy” Green of Jacksonville and a sister in law Ruth Hart of Bluffs.
Preceding him in death were 4 brothers William, Ercil, Floyd, and Orval Hart, 5 sisters Dovie Walker, Beulah Sears, Ila Tash, Velma Green and an infant sister. Also preceding him were 2 nephews and 2 nieces.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:45 PM Friday (April 27, 2001) in Baker Cemetery northwest of Winchester. The family will meet with friends from 1:30 until 2:30 PM at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.

Beatrice M. Hart
Beatrice M. Hart, 92, of Oxville passed away early Friday morning (January 5, 2001) at Pittsfield Manor.
She was born December 12, 1908 in Oxville the daughter of the late Zeb Franklin and Vestia Wills Parker.
She married Orval M. Hart April 25, 1931 in Jacksonville.
He preceded her in death December 25, 1994. Also preceding her were her 3 sisters Cora Thomas, Gertrude Howell and Gladys Stienbaker and her brother Bryan Parker.
Mrs. Hart was a homemaker, she attended Oxville country school and Bluffs High School. She was a member of the Oxville United Methodist Church and also the Oxville Ladies Aid. She enjoyed spending time quilting with her friends and dearly loved her family.
She is survived by a son Orval “Darrell” (wife Marjorie) Hart of rural Winchester, 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a great great grandson and 3 nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday (January 7, 2001) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery near Bluffs.
The family will meet with friends on Saturday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Oxville United Methodist Church or to the Meredosia/Bluffs Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Judith Ann Harter (Hittner)
Judith Ann Harter, age 58, of Rockport, Ill. died Friday afternoon (May 11, 2001) at her daughter’s residence in Topeka, Kansas.
She was born January 9, 1943 daughter of John and Margaret Newman Hittner.
She married Donald E. Harter on January 5, 1963 in Pittsfield, Ill. and he preceded her in death on January 3, 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Lori) Schile of Topeka, Kansas and Mrs. Robbie (Jody) Brite of Griggsville, Ill.; one son, Kent Harter and wife Chris of Pittsfield, Ill.; her mother, Margaret Hittner of Pittsfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Austin and Addison Schile of Topeka, Kansas and Caitlyn and Ryan Harter of Pittsfield, Ill., and Jordan Brite of Griggsville, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Jim (Linda) Yokem of Pleasant Hill, Ill. and Joanne Guthrie of Kinderhook, Ill.; three brothers, John Hittner of Kinderhook, Ill., and Gary Hittner and Darrel Hittner both of Pittsfield, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; and one brother, John Charles Hittner who died in infancy.
Mrs. Harter was a 1961 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Gem City College in Quincy. She worked at the old Miles Drug Store, Town and Country Shoppe, as well as Rich’s Karpet Korner all in Pittsfield, Ill.. She enjoyed collecting Precious Moments Figurines, boating and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (May 16, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to the Pike County Cancer Transportation Fund or to the Pittsfield United Methodist Church.
Mr. Nicholas W. Haskins
Nicholas W. Haskins, age 85, of Pittsfield, Ill. died 6:05 p.m. Saturday (September 8, 2001) at his residence.
He was born September 27, 1915 in Time, Illinois son of the late Wallace L. and Frances Manty McEvers Haskins.
He married Katherine Claus on March 2, 1940 in Pittsfield, Ill. and she survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Sarah Pattara and husband William of Lockport, Ill.; two sons, Nick Haskins and wife Patricia of Warrenville, Ill. and Steve Haskins of Griggsville, Ill.; four grandchildren, David Haskins of Elmhurst, Ill., Elizabeth Haskins of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Matthew and Janelle Pattara both of Lockport, Ill.; one sister, Grace H. Etherton of Mesa, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Morton Haskins.
Mr. Haskins was a 1934 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He was employed as manager of the old Scudder-Gale Grocer Company before buying Schriver Clothing and starting Nick’s Haberdashery, which later became Nick’s Clothing Center in Pittsfield, Ill. He farmed for several years after which he spent considerable time as a real estate broker and developer. He enjoyed gardening and his fruit trees in his back yard.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday (September 12, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or to Blessing Hospice both c/o the funeral home.
Rev. Glen Calvin Hathaway
Rev. Glen Calvin Hathaway, 70, of Jacksonville died early Saturday morning, January 13, 2001 at his residence. He was born on April 17, 1930 in Chicago the son of David Glen and Frances Tramp Hathaway. He married Mary Utterback on September 10, 1955 in Indianapolis and she survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Diana (husband, Bob) Bassi of Franklin, Nita (fiancé Joe Simon) Hathaway of Rawson, Ohio, and Jeanette Wiley of Springfield; two sons, David (wife, Terri) Hathaway of Denmark, Wisconsin and Jon (wife, Lynnette) Hathaway of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Rev. Hathaway served in the United States Navy from 1948-1952. He graduated from Earlham College in June of 1957 and Chicago Theological Seminary and University of Chicago in 1961. He was ordained into the Christian Ministry of the United Church of Christ in 1961. He served churches in Galesburg, Michigan; Amherst, Ohio; Granville, Illinois; Upper Sandusky, Ohio; Pekin, Illinois; and the Jacksonville Congregational United Church of Christ, from which he retired in 1995 and was named Pastor Emeritus.
Rev. Hathaway held memberships in the Jacksonville Rotary Club, of which he was named a Paul Harris Fellow; Jacksonville Chapter of NAACP, St. Louis Botanical Gardens, and St. Louis Zoological Society. He was Past President of the League of Women Voters of Morgan County.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2000 at the Jacksonville Congregational United Church of Christ. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church, and following the service, at which time a light meal will be served. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Congregational United Church of Christ. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Geraldine Haven (Settles)
Geraldine Haven, 80, of Carrollton died at 10:20 A.M. on Monday Sept. 3,
2001 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton.
Born in Hillview on Sept. 9, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Charles
and Sara Reese Settles.
She married Jesse Haven on April 2, 1960 in Princeton, Ill. and he
survives.
Also surviving are 4 grandchildren: Kenneth Dalton, Jeffery Crain (wife
Debbie), Amy Jo Pruiett (husband -Lee) and David Tiffany. 2 great
grandchildren: Matthew R. Eschback and Kayla M. Pruiett, 5 brothers: Joy
(wife Shirley) Settles of Carrollton, Charles “Drag” (wife Evelyn) Settles of
Carrollton, Glenn (wife-JoAnn) Settles of White Hall, Paul (wife Delores)
Settles of Jerseyville and Kenny (wife-Nancy) Settles of Grafton, 2 sisters
survive: Mrs. Carl “Lena” Grindstaff of East Alton and Juanita Pembrook of
Springfield. She was preceded in death by a daughter: Linda Kay Tiffany,
an infant son Larry Wilcox, a sister: Mary Jones and a brother Lawrence
Settles.
Mrs. Haven worked for over 20 years at Twin Cities Manufacturing in
White Hall. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be from 10 A.M. until service time at 11 A.M. on
Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will
follow in the Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson. Memorials may be made to
the American Lung Assoc.
Floyd E. Hawkins
Floyd E. Hawkins, 79, of Manchester died Saturday evening, Aug. 25,
2001 at White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
Born on Nov. 27, 1921 in Murrayville, Ill. he was the son of the late
Lester and Mabel Daniels Hawkins. He married the former Helen Hennel on
Dec. 8, 1941 and she survives. Also surviving are: 3 daughters: Mrs. Randy
“Sheryl” Chapman of Sandwich, Mrs. Charles “Sheila” Williams of
Jacksonville, Mrs. Dino “Marsha” Vozikis of Colona, 1 son: Mark
(wife-Cheryl) Hawkins of Manchester, 7 grandchildren, 4 great
grandchildren, 4 brothers: Lester “Gene” Hawkins of Hutsonville, Harold
“Bud” Hawkins of East Moline, Clarence Hawkins of Macomb and Daniel
Hawkins of Jacksonville; 2 sisters: Lois Higgs of Jacksonville and Eva Laws
of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by a sister Opal.
Mr. Hawkins retired in 1978 after 38 years with John Deere Harvester
Works in East Moline. He was a WW II Army veteran serving with the
608th Ordinance Base Maintainence Battalion (commonly known as the John
Deere Batallion in the European Theatre.
Mr. Hawkins enjoyed gardening and puttering around the house and
garage. He loved his family and assisted them in times of need. Mr.
Hawkins will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor and his
common sense advice.
Visitation will be from 5-8 on Tuesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in White Hall where services will be held on Wed. at 11 A.M. Burial
will follow in Manchester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the
Blessing Hospice of Green e Co.
William L. Hawks Sr.
William L. Hawks, Sr., 85, of Jacksonville died early Saturday morning, April 21, 2001 at McKinley Court in Decatur. He was born March 29, 1916 in Meredosia the son of Jerry and Anna Pehm Hawks. He married Eloise Zimmer on July 5, 1941 in New London, Missouri and she preceded him in death on March 21, 1998.
He is survived by one son, William L. (wife, Joyce) Hawks, Jr. of Decatur, three grandchildren, one great-grandson and one brother, Raymond (wife, Irma) Hawks of Woodson. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Lee Leischner on April 19, 1986, and two brothers, Robert Hawks and Jim Hawks.
Mr. Hawks owned and operated Hawks Oil Company in Jacksonville , worked for the G.M. & O. Railroad as a switchman for 30 years and was a U.S. Star Route Contractor. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre. A decorated veteran, Mr. Hawks participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the Normandy Invasion and also in North and South France receiving three bronze stars during his military service. Mr. Hawks attended the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. on Tuesday with the family meeting friends from 6-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans.
Mrs. Josehpine Hayden (Barton)
Josehpine Hayden, age 69, of Pittsfield, Ill. died Saturday morning (April 21, 2001) at Illini Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill..
She was born October 31, 1931 in Pittsfield, Ill. daughter of Merlyn and Edna Claus Barton.
She married Earl Hayden on August 31, 1957 in Pittsfield, Ill. and he survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Jim (Diana) Elftmann of St. Joseph, Ill.; a son, Craig Hayden and wife JoAnn of Quincy, Ill.; her mother, Edna Barton of Pittsfield, Ill.; three grandchildren, Robert Elftmann of St. Joseph, Ill. and Morgan and Liam Hayden both of Quincy, Ill..; one brother, Glenn Barton and wife Joann of Pittsfield, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; and one son, Robert Hayden.
Mrs. Hayden was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and graduated from Mac Murry College in Jacksonville, Ill. with a degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield, Ill., and a member of Circle Five at the church. She loved to cook for family and friends. She especially loved spending time with her children, and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Clay Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery in Pittsfield, Ill.. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Pittsfield First Christian Church, Pittsfield West Cemetery, or to the donor’s choice.
Mr. Hal Warren Hembrough
Hal Warren Hembrough, 62, of Palmyra died on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on April 30, 1939, in Roodhouse, the son of Harold “H.J.” and Geraldine M. Vinyard Hembrough. He married Evelyn Cochran on May 24, 1957 in Litchfield, Arizona and she survives.
He is also survived by four daughters: Geraldine of New Berlin, Laurie (husband, Lanny) Clevenger of Hettick, Hallie (husband, Greg) Campbell of Carlinville and Audrey (husband, Matthew) Maher of Waverly; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, June (husband, John) Wyatt of Tennessee and Susie (husband, Robert) Zeller of Bartlett; two brothers, Paul (wife, Sandi) ofPalmyra and John (wife, Joyce) of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Harry Wayne and one sister, Betty Crain.
Mr. Hembrough graduated from Jacksonville High School in the class of 1956. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960, and was a meber of the American Legion Post #279 in Jacksonville. He was a farmer in the Palmyra area since 1968 and was a member of the Macoupin County Farm Bureau. He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed his cattle, fishing and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, with burial at Asbury Cemetery in rural Jacksonville. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Northwestern Rescue Squad.
Paul E. Hembrough
Paul E. Hembrough, 45, of rural Jacksonville and formerly of Winchester passed away Sunday afternoon (July 1, 2001) at his home.
He was born January 13, 1956 in Jacksonville the son of James C. and Phyllis E. Mason Hembrough.
He married Shirley Louise Pratt August 10, 1990 in Springfield.
Mr. Hembrough was a 1974 graduate of Winchester High School. He was a member of the Lynnville Methodist Church. He was a farmer. He enjoyed hunting, four wheeling farming and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife Shirley, 2 sons James Paul and Logan Patrick Hembrough both of Jacksonville. His parents James and Phyllis Hembrough of rural Jacksonville, a brother Rick (wife Cindy) Hembrough of St. Charles, Missouri, 4 nephews and a nieces as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday July 6, 2001 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery south of Jacksonville.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to a Trust Fund for his sons at First State Bank in Winchester.
