Mrs. Luella Marian Patterson
Luella Marian Edwards Patterson, 83, of Franklin died early Monday morning February 12, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital.
She was born September 14, 1917 in Franklin the daughter of the late Grover C. and Elsie Lela Tribble Caldwell.
She married Melvin Edwards February 20, 1939. He preceded her in death December 17, 1963. She married M. Eugene Patterson March 22, 1969. He preceded her in death December 3, 1997.
Also preceding her in death was a brother Grover M. “Sprout” Caldwell, step son Richard Patterson (surviving wife Ina Jane Patterson of Rushville) and 2 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Patterson was a 1936 graduate of Franklin High School. She was a Dorm Mother at ISVI, retiring in 1982. She had also worked at Nesco, Bound to Stay Bound, and Capps. She also owned and operated the Woodland Inn Cafe. She cooked for the Waverly and the Franklin schools. She was an accomplished Pianist and Organist for many years and performed at the Park Hotel in Beardstown and the Black hawk in Jacksonville. She was a dedicated member of the Franklin Christian Church.
Survivors include her children Nancy Jo (husband Don) Wood of Franklin, William C. (wife Celia) Edwards of Waverly and Jim M. Edwards of Franklin; one stepson, Robert M. (wife, Jane) Patterson of Rushville. One sister, Betty Lou Roper of Pensacola, Florida and a brother L.N. (wife Gloria) Caldwell of Okeechobee, Florida, 7 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 3 step grandsons 1 step granddaughter, 16 great grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday February 15, 2001 at the Franklin Christian Church.
Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Wednesday at the church where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Franklin Christian Church, The Franklin Cemetery or to the Waverly Rescue Squad.

Mr. F. John Pekarek
F. John Pekarek, 65, of Jacksonville died Wednesday morning, December 5, 2001 at Jacksonville Convalescent Center. He was born on August 1, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Francis L. and Dorothy C. Singleton Pekarek. He married Sandra Moss on June 24, 1967 and she survives.
Also surviving are two sisters, Sharon Enlow of Paris, Tennessee and Patricia (husband, George) Gentry of Florissant, Missouri; one stepsister, Peggy (husband, Robert) McCollister of White Hall and numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Delbert “Mose” Bermes and one brother-in-law, Paul K. Enlow.
Mr. Pekarek had worked at Bound To Stay Bound Book Bindery in Jacksonville, retiring in January of 1994 after 29 ˝ years of employment.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Concord Cemetery. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association.
Kirsten Michelle Perkins
Kirsten Michelle Perkins, infant daughter of Mark Perkins and Annette Dixon of Hettick, died early Saturday morning, April 28, 2001 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was born on March 13, 2001.
Kirsten is survived by her parents, paternal grandfather Bill Perkins of Hettick and maternal grandparents Jim and Doris Vestel of White Hall. She was preceded in death by maternal grandmother Mary Perkins.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends from noon on Wednesday until 1:45 p.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Helen L. Peters (Mieher)
Helen L. Peters, 93, of Jacksonville died Sunday morning, June 24, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on May 11, 1908 in Palmyra the daughter of Walter Fred and Minnie Alice Nevins Mieher. She married Lloyd Peters on December 11, 1926 and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1968.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth (wife, Helen) Peters of Jacksonville and Ray (wife, Lynette) Peters of Cincinnatti, Ohio; three daughters, Joyce (husband, Ronald) McAllister of Jacksonville, Marjorie (husband, Robert) Kehl of Quincy, and Jean (husband,William) Weder of Winchester; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Peters was preceded in death by one son Wayne; a grandson, Russell Weder; five brothers: Walter Rogers, Albert Mieher, Clarence Mieher, Cleo Mieher, and Clyde Mieher ( surviving wife Esther of Clinton); and two sisters, Lois Smith and Edith Hart.
Mrs. Peters had been a housemother in the Student Nurses Dormitory at Passavant Hospital. Prior to that she had also worked at Nesco and the State Hospital. She was a member of Westfair Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 11 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Westfair Baptist Church.
Mrs. Fern M. Peters (Harris)
Fern M. Peters 93, of Waverly, IL died Wednesday, September 26, 2001 in her home in Waverly. She was born on October 18, 1907 in Maxwell Township, Sangamon County, Illinois, a daughter of Cliff and Maude Wright Harris. She married Ralph Peters on October 19, 1925, and he preceded her in death on December 12, 1981.
Surviving are one son: Edward Peters of Waverly; two daughters, Helen Henry of Sanford, Florida; Margaret (husband, Wendell) Sexton of Waverly, seven grandchildren: Laurie Boggs of Waverly, Angie Sexton of Waverly, Sharon Weaver of Sanford, Florida, James Henry of Kissimmee, Florida, Gary Peters of St. Petersburg, Florida, Steve Peters of Orlando, Florida, Sue Batiste of Brentwood, Tennessee; fourteen grandchildren and one nephew, Dale (wife, Janet) Brangenberg of Jerseyville, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Don Peters; one sister, Dorothy Harris Brangenberg and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Peters was a member of Waverly United Methodist Church, Wilbur Chapter #358 Order of the eastern Star, and was a charter member of the Waverly Geneological Society. She worked in the Wemple Bank in Waverly for over 40 years.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2001 in Waverly United Methodist Church. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2001 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, where the family will meet receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Eastrern Star services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Waverly United Mehtodist Church Elevator Fund or Waverly rescue Squad.
Mrs. Dora Evelyn Phillips (Sweetin)
Dora Evelyn Phillips, age 82, of Arthur, formerly of Roodhouse and
White Hall, died early Saturday morning, April 14, 2001 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 20, 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of
Charles D. and Fairy B. Manley Sweetin.
She married William W. Phillips on April 3, 1948 in Roodhouse and
he survives.
She is also survived by one daughter, Kathy Leonhard (and her
special friend, James Boyd) of Green ville, NC; two granddaughters,
Jennifer Leonhard of Rushville and Holly Leonhard of Carterville; two
sisters, Peggy B. Gonsalves of Grass Valley, Calif. and Mary M. Blackketter
of Salem, MO; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by one sister, Elinor Maberry and one brother, Charles D. Sweetin, Jr.
Mrs. Phillips was an avid bridge player and taught many ladies to
play. She was a homemaker and volunteered at St. Rose Hospital in
Hayward, California when they lived there. She was a beauty operator in
Roodhouse for many years. She was a member of the St. John The Baptist Parish in Arcola.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 18,
2001, at the White Hall Cemetery in White Hall. Memorials are suggested
to the St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home
in White Hall is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lawrence Phillips
Lawrence Phillips, age 77, of Baylis, Ill. died Friday morning (July 13, 2001) at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill..
He was born January 29, 1924 in Bowen, Ill. son of the late Clarence Edmund and Bessie Enid Powell Phillips.
He married Rosalyn Hillmann on February 19, 1950 in New Salem, Illinois and she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. E. Dean “Tuffy” (Mary) White, Mrs. Kevin (Tricia) Carnes, and Mrs. David (Donna) James all of Pittsfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jason D. White and wife Beth, Carrie Carnes, Matt and Marc James all of Pittsfield, Ill. and Scott Carnes of Carbondale, Ill.; one great-granddaughter, Ariana Nicole White of Pittsfield, Ill.; two sisters, Darlene Myers of Golden, Ill., Doris Hemphill of Mendenhall, Mississippi; one brother, Lee Phillips of Camp Point, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and George Phillips; and two sisters, Marjorie Warner and Alice Barnes; two nephews, Larry and John Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Bowen High School in 1942. Because of his mother’s death, he was raised by his grandparents and farmed with his uncle on his uncle’s farm north of New Salem, Ill. until he was inducted into the Army during World War II. He served for two years working his way to the rank of sergeant. He served in the Company K 222nd Infantry Division spending most of his time in the European Theater. He received three battle stars for service in the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of the Rhineland, and Battle of the Ardean. He was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed horses. He was a member of the New Salem United Methodist Church and served as a New Salem Township Trustee for 24 years. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sport and musical activities.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (July 17, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Gray Cemetery near New Salem, Ill. with graveside military rites conducted by Griggsville American Legion Post #213. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to the New Salem United Methodist Church or Gray Cemetery.
Warren Cordell Phillips
Warren C. Phillips, 80, of Liberty and formerly of Barry passed away early Saturday morning (March 17, 2001) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born December 27, 1920 in Beverly the son of the late Floyd H. and Carrie Gray Phillips. He married Rose Marie Cox August 10, 1960 in Quincy and she preceded him in death December 5, 1996.He was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Mr. Phillips was a 1938 graduate of Barry High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War 2 serving in Europe. He was involved in the Normandy landing, battles in northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.
He worked on many road construction projects in the area through the local Union in Jacksonville. He retired in 1982.He was a member of the Richfield United Methodist Church, Ninth Air force Association, VFW post 2061, American Legion post 640, a 50 year member of the Pittsfield Masonic Lodge 790, Royal Arch Masons Barry Chapter 88, Quincy York Rite, Quincy High Twelve Club 40, and the Ansar Temple.
Survivors include his 2 daughters Carolyn (husband George) Hanke of Keytsville, Missouri, and Joyce (husband Kevin) Heberlein of Liberty. 5 grandchildren Lisa Hanke, Brian Hanke, Paula Parks, Amy Heberlein and Betsey Heberlein and 1 great granddaughter.
2 brothers Gilbert (wife Emma) Phillips of Tacoma, Washington and Robert (wife Pauline) Phillips of Barry also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery where Military graveside rites will be conducted.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Richfield United Methodist Church or to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
Mr. Claude M. Picou
Claude M. Picou, age 81, of White Hall, died late Thursday, July 19,
2001 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 6, 1919 in Kaskaskia Island, the son of Roy L. and
Millie E. Layton Picou.
He married Julia Layton on Feb. 17, 1947 in Kaskaskia, Illinois and
she survives.
He is also survived by eight sons, Ben Picou of Chester; Ed Picou of
Kaskaskia Island; Leo (wife, Amy) Picou of White Hall; David (wife, Kim)
Picou of Kaskaskia Island; Dan (wife, Yolanda) Picou of Galatia; Tim
(wife, Deena) Picou of Kaskaskia Island; Ted and Peter Picou of Kaskaskia
Island; three daughters, Claudia (husband, Joseph) Vani of Farmington,
MO; Christina (husband, Raymond) Martin of Carbondale and Toni (close
friend, Steve Barber) Picou of White Hall; eleven grandchildren; one great
grandchild; and two sisters, Madaline (husband, Paul) Thomure of Brewer,
MO and Lucille Ratcliff of Brewer, MO. He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Inez Picou and Lenore Vahrenhorst and five brothers, Homer,
Eugene, Adrain, Norman and Paul Picou.
Mr. Picou was raised in Kaskaskia and attended SIU at Carbondale.
He taught school and was principal at Kaskaskia Grade School before
moving to White Hall in 1970 and became principal at the White Hall and
Hillview Elementary Schools. He retired in 1981. He was a Marine Corps
veteran, serving during World War II.
Private funeral services will be held at the Basler Funeral Home in St.
Marys, Missouri, with burial at Kaskaskia Island Cemetery. The family will
meet friends from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001 at the Basler
Funeral Home in St. Marys, Missouri. Memorials may be given to Boyd
Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Ill. or Blessing Hospice of Green e County
in Carrollton, IL. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is in
charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Norma Jeane Pitchford (Huddleston)
Norma Jeane Pitchford, 64, of Waverly, Illinois, died Sunday, October 28, 2001 in her home in Waverly. She was born July 7, 1937 in Decatur, Illinois, a daughter of Orville and Katherine Williamson Huddleston. She married Donald Pitchford, October 21, 1956 and he survives.
also surviving are one son: Donald (wife Claudia) Pitchford of Springfield, Illinois; one daughter: Donna (husband Pat) Cray of Girard, Illinois; one grandson; Nick Cray of Girard, Illinois; one granddaughter; Anita Cray of Girard, Illinois; one great grandson; Daniel Cray of Girard, Illinois; three sisters: Jan Woods of Waverly, Illinois; Bonnie (husband Ron) Underwood of Waverly, Illinois; Judy Crawford of Waverly, Illinois; four nieces and four nephews.
She retired from Dickey-John in Auburn in 1999, and was a member of The American Legion Auxilary Post #262 in Waverly, IL.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 31, 2001 in Waverly East Cemetery, Waverly, Illinois, with Rev. Brian Hodge officiating. The family will receive friends at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Waverly American Legion Post #262 Awning Fund. Neece Funeral Home in Waverly is serving the family.
Mr. Buck Edward Powell
Buck Edward Powell, age 91, of White Hall, died Thursday
afternoon, July 12, 2001 at the home of his granddaughter at rural White
Hall.
He was born Sept. 15, 1909 in Hillview, the son of James Alvy and
Minnie Mae Reese Powell.
He married Lillie Suttles on Nov. 10, 1930 in Carrollton and she
survives.
He is also survived by one son, James R. (wife, Mary) Powell, Sr. of
White Hall; two daughters, Betty (husband, Robert) Blane of White Hall
and Shirley (husband, Gene) Johns of Pleasant Hill; twenty-two
grandchildren; sixty-two great grandchildren; fifteen great great
grandchildren; and three sisters, Mildred Nolan of Jerseyville; Ava
McWhorter of Scottville and Margaret Talkington of White Hall. He was
preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Plackett; two great
grandchildren; two brothers, Sonny and Albert Powell and two sisters,
Lorraine Reynolds and Esther McWhorter.
Mr. Powell owned and operated a tree service for many years, worked
at Olin in Alton for several years, and for many years mowed and dug
graves at the White Hall Cemetery.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the White Hall
Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday at the
funeral home. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.
