Helen M. Shaw (Scoggins)
Helen M. Shaw, 96, of Jerseyville formerly of Green e Co. died at Noon on
Thursday Jan. 4, 2001 at Green wood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville.
Born in Woodville Twp. on March 19, 1904 she was the daughter of the
late George P. and Mary Ann Hardwick Scoggins.
On Dec. 10, 1921 she married Emett Shaw in Carrollton and he preceded
her in death after 52 years of marriage on July 14, 1973.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Mary Edith Mallincott and Irene Epperson
both of Jerseyville and 2 sons: Robert H.(wife-Dorie) and Dick(wife-Sonja)
Shaw both of Jerseyville.
13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren
survive.
She was preceded in death by 2 sons: George E. and Thomas A. Shaw, 4
sisters: Minnie Estes, Martha Hardwick, Sadie Scoggins and an infant and 2
brothers: Thomas and Perry Scoggins.
Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker and farm wife who had at one time been
the cook at Kane Grade School. She was a member of the Jerseyville Church
of Christ. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be from Noon until service time at 2 P.M. on Sunday at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will follow in the
Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jerseyville Church of Christ
or the Green wood Manor Nursing Home Activity Fund.

Hazel Price Shaw (Brickey)
Hazel Price Shaw, 89, of Jacksonville formerly of Green e Co. died at 1:42
P.M. on Thursday Aug. 23, 2001 at Modern Care Convalescent and Nursing
Home in Jacksonville.
Born in Hillview on August 5, 1912 she was the daughter of the late
James C. and Maude Raines Brickey.
She first married George “Homer” Price on May 9, 1937 and he preceded
her in death on June 28, 1962. She later married Rex Shaw on June 17, 1973
and he preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1986.
Surviving are a son : Brad (wife-Connie) Price of Carrollton, 2 step
daughters: Mary Katherine Ericson of Washington, D.C. and Frances Blesse
of Jacksonville; 3 granddaughters: Diana Burton, Lisa Klucka and Kimberly
Reese, 8 step grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several step great
grandchildren and some step great great grandchildren. A sister: Maxine
Hartnett of Dallas, Texas also survives.
She was preceded in death by a step daughter: Eleanor Perkins, 4 brothers:
Ralph, Robert, Keith and Richard Brickey and a sister: Phoebe Brickey.
Mrs. Shaw was taught school in the Green e Co. area for 33 years
retiring in 1972. She was a member of the White Hall Baptist Church, the
Ill. Education Assoc., a life member of the NEA, Delta Kappa Gamma, The
DAR, the Ill. Retired Teachers Assoc. and the Rebekah Lodge of Jerseyville.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Sat. at the Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in Carrollton where services will be held on Sunday at 1 P.M. with
burial to follow in White Hall Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the
District 1 Foundation for Quality Education.

Mr. Abe Shelton
Abe Shelton, age 74, of Pittsfield, Ill. and formerly of New Salem, Ill. died Wednesday evening (Oct. 17, 2001) at his residence.
He was born November 1, 1926 in Griggsville, Ill. son of the late Art and Velma Splain Shelton.
He married Louise Hammitt on December 6, 1947 in Griggsville, Ill. and she survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Elaine Hayden and husband William of Pittsfield, Ill.; one son, Donald Shelton and wife Lorri of Branson, Mo.; three grandchildren, Sara Gresham and husband Robert, Susan Cooley and husband Brian, and Trent Hayden and wife Leslie all of Pittsfield, Ill.; one great-grandson, Jacob Gresham of Pittsfield, Ill.; two brothers, Dale Shelton and wife Cindy and Gene Shelton and wife JoAnn both of Griggsville, Ill.; one sister, Donna Wade and husband Lew of Griggsville, Ill. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Wayne Shelton.
Mr. Shelton was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended college at the University of Illinois before being drafted into the U.S. Army during W.W. II.. He farmed south of New Salem, Ill. for many years. He was an avid reader who enjoyed reading Louis L’mour westerns. He loved sports and enjoyed attending high school sporting events. He also enjoyed horseback riding and was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting. But his greatest love was his family.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 20, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. John Wilkey officiating. Burial will be in Gray Cemetery near New Salem, Ill.. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to a trust fund for his great-grandson Jacob Gresham, the Pike County Health Dept. or to the Mounted Angels all c/o the funeral home.

Mr. Robert E. Shelton Sr.
Robert E. Shelton, Sr., 72, of South Jacksonville died Thursday evening, March 8, 2001 at his residence. He was born on December 7, 1928 in Morgan County, the son of Leonard J. and Veda E. Steele Shelton. He married Ruth R. Miller in Pocahontas, Arkansas and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Rhonda J. (husband, Dan) Claus of Palos Heights, IL; four sons, Robert E. (wife, Paula) Shelton, Jr. of Grant Park, Randy D. (wife, Patti) Shelton of Naperville, Roger S. (wife, Donna) Shelton of Calumet City and Rodney L. Shelton of Lake Station, Indiana; eleven grandchildren and two sisters, Veda E. (husband, George) Moore of Marissa and Barbara J. (husband, Dale) Gibbs of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Brandy Shelton; two sisters, Dorothy Bottoms and Jackie Panhorst and four brothers, Wayne Shelton, James L. Shelton, Leonard Shelton, Jr. and William Shelton.
Mr. Shelton had been an ironworker with Local Union #1 in Chicago. He served in the United States Navy from 1946-48. He was a member of the Elks Club in Oak Lawn. Mr. Shelton was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m.. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.

Veta Marie Sherwin (Hanback)
Veta Marie Sherwin, 99, of Winchester passed away early Tuesday morning (March 20, 2001) at Passavant Area Hospital.
She was born November 2, 1901 in Glasgow the daughter of William and Nelia Haney Hanback.
She married Claude Sherwin June 10, 1922 in Winchester. He preceded her in death November 8, 1967. Also preceding her in death was a son Jack Sherwin, 3 sisters, Hettie McCollom, Mildred Chambers, and Gladys Guinnane, and 3 brothers Harley, Murel and John Hanback.
Mrs. Sherwin was the Postmaster in Glasgow from 1954 until 1966 when she retired. She was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church.
Survivors include her 2 sons Dean (wife Dorothy) Sherwin of St. Louis, Missouri, and Gail Sherwin of Winchester. 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and a sister Nellie Benton of Winchester.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday (March 22, 2001) at the Glasgow Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Glasgow Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4:00 PM Wednesday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Scott County Nursing Center or to the Glasgow Baptist Church.

Gilbert Clio Simmons
Gilbert Clio Simmons, 87, of White Hall died at 2:20 P.M. on Tuesday
July 24, 2001 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
Born in Fredricktown,Mo. on Nov. 24, 1913 he was the son of the late
Edmond and Sylvia Hess Simmons.
On Sept. 2, 1939 he married the former Viola Crain in White Hall and
she survives.
Also surviving are 2 grandchildren: Mrs. Darek “Kim Ann” Deitz of
DesPlaines, Il. and Jim (wife Thelma) Simmons of Aurora, Il. ; 3 great
grandchildren : Christopher Simmons of Manchester and Travis and Treaver
Simmons of Aurora. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by a daughter: Sharon M. Simmons, a son:
Travis T. Simmons, a brother: Edmond Simmons Jr. and 3 sisters: Gladys
Blair, Vange Griffith and Kathelene Herron.
Mr. Simmons was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the White
Hall Christian Church. He worked at Stateville Prison in Joliet until joining
the Navy in 1944. He worked at the White Hall Post Office from 1947 until
retirement in 1981. He was a member of the National Assoc. of Letter
Carriers Local 2315 and the White Hall American Legion.
Visitation will be from 4-8 on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in White Hall where the family will meet friends from 6-8. Funeral
services will be at 10 A.M. on Friday at the funeral home with burial in the
White Hall Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the White Hall Christian
Church or the Green e Co. Visiting Nurses.

Mr. Robert Dale Sipes
Robert Dale Sipes, 58, of Jacksonville died Friday afternoon, January 26, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on May 2, 1942 near Winchester, the son of Elmer Lee and Mildred Virginia Rutledge Sipes. He married Barbara Ingram on June 17, 1962 at Alsey and she survives.
He is also survived by four sons: Robert Bryant (wife, Teresa) Sipes of Alsey, Michael Brent (wie, Amy) Sipes of Jacksonville, and Jason Scott Sipes and Jeremiah Ingram Sipes, both at home; four grandchildren; his mother of Patterson; two brothers, Richard (wife, Linda) Sipes of Mt. Sterling and Darryl (wife, Carolyn) Sipes of Springfield, Missouri; and one sister, Dorothy Hausmann of Bonne Terre, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Howard Sipes.
Mr. Sipes was employed with United Parcel Service for over 30 years. He had owned and operated Sunnyview Shelter Care Home in Jacksonville from 1975-1980 and Howard Johnson’s in Jacksonville from 1980-1993. he was a member AMBUCS in Jacksonville, Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville and had been a member and deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Alsey, before coming to Jacksonville.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, two miles south of Alsey, with burial at Pine Tree Cemetery at Patterson. Friends may call after noon on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Carmi Children’s Home in Carmi.

Mr. Quentin Bryant Six
Quentin Bryant Six, 24, of Jacksonville died Monday morning, September 24, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on February 27, 1977 in Jacksonville the son of Kevin and Melissa Milling Six.
He is survived by his father of Jacksonville; his mother Melissa (husband, Keith) Kinsley of Jacksonville; three sisters, Alicia Six, Rebecca Six, and Emily Six, all of Jacksonville; paternal grandmother Betty Six of Jacksonville; maternal grandmother Barbara Milling of Park Ridge; one step-sister, four step-brothers, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather Edwin Six and maternal grandfather Elmer Milling.
Mr. Six was a 1995 graduate of Jacksonville High School and had attended the University of Illinois and Parkland Community College, majoring in art. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home. Private burial services will be held at Versailles West Side Cemetery in Versailles. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

Mr. Joseph F. Smith
Joseph F. Smith, 86, of Jacksonville died Friday morning, November 30, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on November 1, 1915 in Hull Township, Pike County, Illinois the son of Archie and Theodosia Morris Smith. He married Mary J. Atkinson on June 14, 1942 in St. Charles, Missouri and she preceded him in death on April 24, 1978.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda (husband, Dick) Troutt of Jacksonville; two grandsons; 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lee (wife, Mary) Smith of Payson and Virgil (wife, Hazel) Smith of Davenport, Iowa; 6 sisters, Martha (husband, Albert) Foltz of Fowler, Mamie (husband, Glenn) Meyers of Palmyra, Missouri, Juanita (husband, William) Vance of Clarence, Missouri, Norma (husband, Joe) Meranda of Perry, Missouri, Bettie (husband, Keith) Walker of Kinderhook and Freda Ward of Payson. He was preceded in death by one sister, Rosemary Smith.
Mr. Smith had been employed at Nesco during the war. He was a very talented musician and enjoyed playing the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. He performed with many bands, most notably with the Prairie Pioneers on WLDS during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 12 Noon until the time of the service. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Dorothy Irene Smith (Fortado)
Dorothy Irene Smith, 81, of Jacksonville, died Saturday afternoon, November 10, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on June 10, 1920 in Monroe County, Missouri the daughter of Virginia Fortado. She married Lloyd C. Smith on May 13, 1940 in Palmyra, Missouri and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1982. She later married Edward Tucker and he also preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Smith of Loveland, Colorado and Charles Smith of Jacksonville; four daughters, Nora Beckman of Murrayville, and Alwilda Ann Scoggins, Martha Lacy, and Linda Snodgrass, all of Jacksonville; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester DeOrnellas of San Jose, California and Harry Jo DeOrnellas of San Francisco, California; and two sisters, Rose Marie and Ruby, both of California. She was preceded in death by one son Harold Lloyd Smith and two daughters, Sharon Smith-York and Yvonne Smith.
Mrs. Smith was a nursing home owner and manager from 1954 until her retirement in 1974. She has provided in-home health care to elderly people in the Jacksonville area since her retirement.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery at a later date. The family will meet friends from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service. Memorials are suggested to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Morgan County.

Mr. Robert Eugene Smith
Robert Eugene Smith, 60, of Jacksonville died Saturday afternoon, September 8, 2001 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born October 27, 1940 in Maquon the son of Harold and Opal Purchase Smith.
He is survived by one step-brother, Frank Burnaugh of Ohio and one aunt, Christina Anderson of East Galesburg.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at Immanuel East Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 1-1:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Ms. Iva Smith
Iva Smith, age 100, of the Griggsville Estates Boarding Home in Griggsville, Ill. and formerly of Perry, Ill. died 1:15 p.m. Wednesday (August 15, 2001) at the boarding home.
She was born December 12, 1900 in near Perry, Ill. daughter of the late Henry and Emma Jane Dixon Smith.
Surviving is one niece, Bessie Jane Vose of Chambersburg, Ill.; one nephew, Bob Fagen and wife Annetta of Perry, Ill.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Una Fagen, Mable Smith; one brother, Harry Smith; and one nephew, Ray Smith.
Ms. Smith graduated from Perry High School in 1919. She taught school in Pike County for 39 years and taught for one year in Texas. She joined the Asbury Methodist Church in 1910 and later transferred to Perry United Methodist Church in 1922. She joined the Cornelia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1919 and was also a member of the Rose Croux Shrine. She was a charter member of the Perry Garden Club and a member of the Perry Senior Citizens Club.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday (August 18, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill.. Burial will be in McCord Cemetery in Perry, Ill.. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Perry Cemetery Association.
