Joanne Smith (Kitchen)
Joanne Smith, 69, of Jacksonville died Monday evening, August 20, 2001 at Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville. She was born on September 20, 1931 in Jacksonville the daughter of Harold and Ethel Davidsmeyer Kitchen.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna (husband, Donnie) Pruett of Jacksonville and Cindy Jackson of Concord; one son, Clinton (wife, Linda) Smith of Jacksonville; twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and one brother, Bill Kitchen of Franklin.
Mrs. Smith had been a cook at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville for 25 years, and had recently worked at Taco Bell in Jacksonville. She was a fan of wrestling and racing.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends following the service at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Fund.
Dr. Ruby M. Smith
Dr. Ruby M. Smith, 91, of Jacksonville and formerly Mattoon, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, in Barton W. Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville. She was born March 3, 1909 in the Durbin Community near Franklin, a daughter of Thomas B. and Alpha Six Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: LeRoy, Floyd, Lawrence, and F. Byron; a nephew, Tommy Smith and a niece Wilma Smith Gillespie. She is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, including Lois (husband, Paul) Rust, J.W. “Bill” (wife, Carol) Smith, C. Don (wife, Abbie) Smith, Dick (wife, Muriel) Smith, and Joena (husband, Bill) Meier, all of Jacksonville; and Louis (wife, Arlene) Smith of Franklin.
Dr. Smith graduated from Franklin High School and Illinois State Normal University. She began her teaching career at College Grove country school near Franklin. She taught high school at El Paso and Naperville, Illinois. She received her M. A. from the University of Iowa and her Ph. D. from Purdue University. Her college teaching career included Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; University of Iowa, University of South Dakota, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana; and Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. She retired from education in 1975.
Dr. Smith resided in Mattoon, Illinois following her retirement. She moved to Barton W. Stone Christian Home in February , 2000. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Mattoon, the Coles County Genealogical Society, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She served on the board of the Illinois Presbyterian Home, volunteered at the Lincoln Log Cabin Historical Site, Douglas Hart Nature Center, and the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Dr. Smith was an avid nature lover, traveled extensively, and was very involved with all of her nieces, nephews, their extended families, and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at Neece Funeral Home in Franklin with burial at Franklin Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Durbin United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church of Mattoon, or Franklin Cemetery.
Mr. Howard E. Smith
Howard Eugene Smith, 58, of Woodson died early Friday morning, September 14, 2001 at his residence. He was born November 18, 1942, in Hillview, the son of Ruby Smith Powell. He married Marjorie Baker on July 8, 1993 in Harrison, Arkansas and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Aaron (wife, Becky) Smith of Carrollton, Warren (wife, Janet) Smith of Jacksonville, and Brad (wife, Beth) Smith of Normal; two daughters, Lisa (husband, Stephen) Carey of Alhambra, and Julie Smith of Jacksonville; one step-son, Adam Baker of Jacksonville; two step-daughters, Diana Monroe of Franklin and Lauren Baker of St. Louis, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Davis and Betty Smith.
Mr. Smith was a supervisor for Mobil Chemical Company in Jacksonville and was employed there from 1962 until 1990. He graduated from White Hall High School with the class of 1962. Mr. Smith enjoyed his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2001 at the Williamson Funeral Home with interment at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. on Monday until time of services. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Lucille Lane Solomon (Driskell)
Lucille Lane Solomon, 80, of Modesto, IL, died Monday, September 10, 2001 in St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born November 20, 1920 in Bloomfield, Kentucky, a daughter of Levi and Melissa Woford Driskell. She married Ellis Solomon on May 29, 1943 in Bardstown, Kentucky, and he survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Elane (husband Don) Catton of Silvis, IL.; Two sons: Lyle (wife Sue) Solomon of Athens, Illinois and Brian (wife Brenda) Solomon of Modesto, IL. Three grandchildren: Ty, Levi and Erin Solomon of Modesto, IL, and one brother Edwin (wife Dona) of Jefferstown, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter Laura Lynn Solomon.
She was a member of Modesto Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, September 13, 2001 in Oak Grove Cemetery, east of Modesto, IL. The family will receive friends at the graveside after 9:30 am on Thursday. Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra is serving the family.
Mr. Nelson E. Spaenhower
Nelson E. Spaenhower, 62, of Jacksonville died Friday evening, January 19, 2001 at his residence. He was born on August 24, 1938 in Jacksonville the son of Charles Durward Thomas and Dorothy Opal Waggener Spaenhower. He married Louella Fuelling on June 1, 1958 near Arenzville and she survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Jodi (wife, Tammy) Spaenhower of Champaign and Michael Northrop of Jacksonville; one daughter, Kimberly (husband, Allen) Bryson of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, and one sister, Connie (husband, Gary) Sweatman of Gosport, Indiana.
After completing his education, Mr. Spaenhower operated the Gulf Service Station on the corner of North Main and Walnut. He then went to work at Mobil Chemical where he helped develop the “Hefty” line of garbage bags. He later operated MFA/Shelter Insurance Agencies in Jacksonville and Beardstown and for 19 years he was an account executive with MCI, previously Teleconnect and Telcom USA. Mr. Spaenhower also owned and operated Spaenhower Honey Bee Farm near Jacksonville.
Mr. Spaenhower was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He was a member of the Jacksonville Jaycees, had been a Boy Scout Leader for 20 years, and coached Bronco and Colt League baseball. He was a former member of the Jacksonville Sportsman’s Club. Mr. Spaenhower enjoyed participating in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards and talking with friends over coffee at local establishments.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at the Salem Lutheran Church with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, or Woodhaven Hospice.
Infant Lucas Walter Sparrow
Lucas Walter Sparrow, infant son of Daniel Charles and Kimberly Anne Reed Sparrow, died Monday evening, July 23, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He is survived by his parents of Jacksonville; one sister, Allison Rose Sparrow at home; paternal grandmother Gertrude Sparrow of Quincy; maternal grandparents Phyllis Reed and Walter Reed of Quincy, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather Thomas Sparrow and maternal aunt Dawn Smith.
Private services will be held. The family will meet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Lucas Sparrow Memorial Fund.
James Maurice Spencer
James Maurice Spencer, 64, of Winchester passed away Thursday (July 5, 2001) afternoon at his home.
He was born October 24, 1936 in White Hall the son of the late J. Edw. and Ida Mae Mitchell Spencer.
He married Lois Elaine Matthews February 21, 1960 at the 1st Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Mr. Spencer was a 1954 graduate of Winchester High School. He attended Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois.
He was a farmer in the Scott County area all of his life. He was a member of the Riggston/Merritt United Methodist Church, He was active in 4H, serving on the Scott County 4H Fair Board in various positions. He was a member of the Scott County Farm Bureau Board, and had been a FFA sponsor. He loved scuba diving, sailing and Winnie the Pooh.
Survivors include his wife Lois at home. A son James Jeffrey (wife Dina) Spencer of Winchester, a daughter Catherine Lynn (husband Ed) Kinzie of Union, South Carolina. 1 grandson James Edward Spencer.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister Joyce Evelyn Spencer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday (July 9, 2001) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Gillham Cemetery north of Winchester.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Winchester Fire Department Rescue Camera or to the Winchester EMS.
Mr. Lester Alva Sprague
Lester Alva Sprague, age 85, of Roodhouse, died Friday evening,
Nov. 2, 2001 at Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville.
He was born April 26, 1916 in Beardstown, the son of Algie and
Annie Sprague.
He married Rosie Sullivan on March 7, 1945 in Mexico, Missouri and
she preceded him in death on December 19, 1996.
He is survived by four sons, Lester Sprague, Jr. of Roodhouse;
Charles Sprague of Canton; Kenneth Sprague and James Sprague, both of
Roodhouse; six daughters, Virginia MacMillen of Lawrence, KS; Joyce
Sprague of Roodhouse; April Sprague of White Hall; Barbara Allen of
Odin; Emily Burby of Roodhouse and Pam Buchanan of Green field; three
adopted children, Paul Sprague of White Hall; Lisa Sprague of White Hall
and Kelly Sprague of Springfield, twenty-two grandchildren, many
great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Sprague of Canton. He was
preceded in death by one son, Bobby Gene, and one sister, Mary.
Mr. Sprague served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he
was stationed in the European Theater. He worked at Fiat-Allis in
Springfield for 23 years, retiring in 1978.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001
at the Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. The Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in Roodhouse is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Elmo Staggs
Elmo Staggs, age 90, of Pittsfield, Ill. died Wednesday morning(July 11, 2001) at Pittsfield HealthCare Center in Pittsfield, Ill..
He was born April 22, 1911 in Barry, Ill. son of the late George and Stella Hays Staggs.
He married Beulah Akin on February 29, 1936 in Monmouth, Ill. and she survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Don (Betty) Hayden of Pittsfield, Ill.; six grandchildren, Steve Hayden and wife Betty, Sandy Herring and husband Dave, Debbie Osment and husband Scott, and Shane Martin all of Pittsfield, Ill., Jeana Kindle and husband Darren of Milton, Ill., and Rhonda Kattelman of St. Louis, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Evelyn Martin; and two brothers, Edward and Lee Staggs.
Mr. Staggs was a 1929 graduate of Barry High School in Barry, Ill. and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in W.W. II. He was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church in Pittsfield, Ill. who’s other memberships included, Pittsfield American Legion Post #152, Pike County V.F.W., and a 52 year member Pittsfield Masonic Lodge #790 A.F. & A.M..
As a lifelong Democrat, Mr. Staggs was a former Precinct Committeeman & Pittsfield Township Supervisor and was known as “Mr. Democrat” around Pike County, Ill.. He was also employed by the State of Illinois in various capacities for sixteen years.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (July 14, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Dora Lee Stauffer (Main)
Dora Lee Stauffer, age 73, of Quincy, Ill. formerly of Pittsfield, Ill. died Thursday evening (April 19, 2001) at her residence.
She was born June 30, 1927 in Nebo, Ill. daughter of the late A. Clyde and Helen Yakley Main.
She married Roy J. ”Junior” Stauffer on October 5, 1944 in Quincy, Ill. and he preceded her in death December 10, 1980.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Walt (Donna) Illgen of Sparks, Nevada; Mrs. Alan (Joan) Mays of Quincy, Ill.; and Mrs. Dan (Anita) Mefford of Pittsfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Mrs. Kenneth (Andrea Lee) Knapp of St. Louis, Mo., Michael S. Dougherty of Quincy, Ill., Joseph D. Mays of Normal, Ill., Carson West and Kit Joseph Mefford both of Pittsfield, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Kollin John and Mckenzie Lee Knapp of St. Louis, Mo.; two-step grandchildren, Autumn and Kody Mefford both of Griggsville, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence “Sam” (Marjorie) Penstone Gamble of Pittsfield, Ill., Mrs. Oral (Erma) Bethard of Pittsfield, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Mary Emma Kurfman of Fishhook, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three grandchildren, Mathew Dougherty, and Mefford twins in infancy; twin sister and brother, Geraldine Hill and Gerald Main.
Mrs. Stauffer was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, Ill. and with her husband, lived on a farm near Fishhook, Ill. for many years. She graduated LPN training with a specialization in pharmacology at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. and was employed as a nurse for Blessing and St. Mary Hospital as well as being an IV technician at St. Mary Hospital for seventeen years before her retirement. She was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield, Ill., and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Quincy, Ill.. She enjoyed needlework, crossword puzzles, drawing, and was an avid reader. But her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday (April 23, 2001) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with burial in Baylis Cemetery in Baylis, Ill.. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made Baylis Cemetery or the Pike County Animal Shelter, or Quincy Humane Society.
Mr. Wayne Steelman
Wayne Steelman, age 83, of Glasgow, died peacefully at home,
Thursday night, Feb. 1, 2001.
He was born Nov. 7, 1917 in Roodhouse, the son of George W. and
Dollie Boston Steelman.
He married Cora Eileen Bain on June 4, 1938 in Bowling Green ,
Missouri. She survives at home.
He is also survived by one son, Thomas B. (wife, Mary) Steelman of
Glasgow; two granddaughters, Tammy Lynn (husband, Don) Hoots of
Winchester and Mysti Lynn (husband, Tim) Schwalb of Virginia; three
great granddaughters, Chelsea Lynn and Courtney Lynn Hoots and Tiffany
Ann Schwalb; two sisters, Dorothy Dolan and Mildred Brown, both of
White Hall and one brother, Glenn (wife, Ella Dee) Steelman of Bushnell;
and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son,
Teddy Wayne Steelman, who died from wounds received in Viet Nam in
1967; one brother, Buell Steelman and an infant sister.
Wayne farmed in the area for many years. He was clerk for the
Glasgow Cemetery Board for many years. In 1969 he went to work at the
Scott County Nursing Center, retiring in 1981. Wayne loved his family and
work, his Lord Jesus and his friends. He was a faithful and honorable man.
He was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church and in recent years
attended Bloomfield Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at the Glasgow Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday. Memorials are suggested to the Winchester EMS or the Scott
County Nursing Center. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is
in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Edmond "Wes" Stewart
Edmond “Wes” Stewart, age 65, of Champagin, Ill. and formerly of Pike County, Ill. died late Monday morning (January 22, 2001) at his residence.
He was born April 18, 1935 in Eolia, Mo. son of the late John Alexander and Lydia Allean Tolbert Stewart.
He married Anita Ehrheart in August of 1961 in Pittsfield, Ill.
Surviving is one daughter, Elizabeth Jane Bess of Medesto, Ill.; two sons, James Wesley Stewart and Gilbert Stewart and wife Janice all of Nebo, Ill.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; three sisters, Ella Brooks of Pittsfield, Ill., Carolyn “Susie” Splain of Griggsville, Ill., and Janet Sorister of Pickton, Texas; three brothers, his twin Eddie Stewart of Birdsboro, Penn., Gilbert Stewart of Potosi, Mo, and Jesse Stewart of Washington, Mo.; his former wife Anita Dusenberry of Pittsfield, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Stewart in his early years was a carpenter who enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday (January 29, 2001) at Douglas Cemetery near Milton, Ill.. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the family. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Floreca M. Stewart (Craddock)
Floreca M. Stewart, age 80, of White Hall, died early Tuesday, March
20, 2001 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
She was born Nov. 22, 1920 in Scott County, the daughter of Thomas
and Dorothy Mae Bell Craddock.
She married Andrew E. “Bob” Stewart on Aug. 29, 1938 in Bowling
Green , Missouri and he preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1994.
She is survived by one daughter, Gertie Ruyle of Springfield; five
sons, Robert L. Stewart of White Hall; John William Stewart of White Hall;
Richard L. Stewart of Portage, Wisconsin; Thomas Stewart of White Hall
and James D. Stewart of Las Vegas, Nevada; twelve grandchildren; one
great grandchild; one great great grandchild; seven sisters, Martha
McMillen of Rochelle; Betty Conner of Ashland; Katherine Gotschal of
Franklin; Mary Helen Ray of Springfield; Jean Monroe of Jacksonville;
Linda Hayes of Jacksonville; and June Gowin of Jacksonville and two
brothers, Robert Thomas Craddock of Gillespie and James Craddock of
Alton. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, one great
granddaughter and one sister, Dorothy Osborne.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America Camp
5141 at Patterson and the Green e County Home Extension and was a 4-H
leader when she was younger. She and her husband cared for over 70 foster
children in their home over a 30 year period. She was a long time member
of the White Hall First Baptist Church and recently had been attending the
Hillview Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in the Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Hillview
Baptist Church.
