Mrs. Edna M. Barton (Claus)
Edna M. Barton, age 97, of the Liberty Village in Pittsfield, Ill. died late Sunday evening (July 14, 2002) at the nursing home.
She was born May 31, 1905 in Atlas, Ill. daughter of the late Frank and Marietta Dodge Claus.
She married Merlyn Barton on July 30, 1927 in Louisiana, Mo. and he preceded her in death in 1979.
Surviving is one son, Glenn Barton and wife JoAnn of Pittsfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Mike Barton and wife Maggie of Riverton, Ill., Craig Hayden and wife JoAnn of Quincy, Ill., Don Barton of Quincy, Ill., Sue Worrell and husband David of Thorntown, Indiana, Diana Elftmann and husband Jim of St. Joseph, Ill.; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Josephine Hayden; two grandsons, Ronnie Barton and Robert Hayden; and four brothers, Leslie, Harold, Eugene, and Alfred Claus.
Mrs. Barton attended Western Illinois Teacher’s College in Macomb, Ill. and taught in various country schools in Pike County, Ill. before her marriage. She farmed with her husband near Time, Ill. until 1947 when they moved to a farm on the El Dara blacktop, where they farmed for many years. In 1984 she moved to Pittsfield and lived there until 1999 when she became a resident at Liberty Village. She was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church and the Bethany Circle and Priscillas at the church. She was a charter member of the Pike County Home Extension and was also a member of the Business and Professional Women. She loved to travel with friends on tours.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday (July 18, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill.. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Memorials may be made to the Pittsfield West Cemetery or the Pittsfield First Christian Church.
Mr. Edgar Basham
Edgar Basham, age 68, of Roodhouse, died Wednesday evening, Feb.
6, 2002 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
He was born June 24, 1933 in Owensboro, Kentucky, the son of
Shelton Lee and Elizabeth Brown Basham.
He is survived by three children, Mitchell W., Larry and Cynthia;
several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Richard and Shelton Basham and two sisters, Viola
Campbell and Mae Bratton.
Mr. Basham served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He lived and worked in Chicago for many years before moving to
Roodhouse.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb.
12, 2002 at the Walkerville Cemetery in Walkerville. The Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. James Donovan Baumgartner
James Donovan Baumgartner, age 53, of Carrollton, died early Sunday
morning, July 21, 2002 at his residence.
He was born June 24, 1949 in Carrollton, the son of Richard Donovan
and Irene Florence McCallister Baumgartner.
He married Bonnie Kleidon on Sept. 30, 1989 in White Hall and she
survives.
He is also survived by his mother, Irene Baumgartner of Carrollton;
three daughters, Christy Jo (husband, Kendall) Pyatt, Carrie Ann (husband,
Shawn) Garrison and Ammie Jean (husband, Chad) Stringer, all of Carrollton;
one son, Bradley Joe Baumgartner, at home; six grandchildren, Chelsey,
Carley, Bailey, Mitchell, Hayden and Hannah; eight brothers, Larry
Baumgartner of White Hall; Richard Lee Baumgartner of Carrollton; George
David Baumgartner of Dow; Vincent Baumgartner, Ronald Baumgartner,
Douglas Baumgartner, Chris Baumgartner and Craig Baumgartner, all of
Carrollton; and two sisters, Frances Price of Eldred and Linda Greaves of
Carrollton. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Baumgartner was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam during
1969 and 1970. He worked many years for the Green e County Highway
Department. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and family
get-togethers.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002 at
the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials
are suggested to Blessing Hospice of Green e County. The Airsman-Hires

Janis Mae Beck (Baldes)
Janis Mae (Baldes) Beck, 46, of Carrollton died on Sept. 27, 2002 at the home of her daughter. born in Carrollton on July 3, 1956 she is the daughter of Marion L. Baldes of Hillview and Robert and Vonita (Sloan-Baldes) Green of Jerseyville. She is survived by her love and friend Chris Williams of Carrollton, 3 daughters Jennifer (husband Mike) Rawe of Carrollton, Emily Baldes of Carrollton and Sara Voiles of Carrollton, a son Dustin (girlfriend Billie Tucker) Schnelten of Carrollton, 6 grandchildren: Colton Rawe, Jaea Rawe, Cayden Rawe, Kaylee Schnelten, Tanner Shaw and Hanna Schnelten, 4 sisters: Marilyn Baldes of Jacksonville, Sally (husband Wayne) Fanning of Jacksonville, Tammy (husband Brad) Floreth of Jacksonville, Misty Baldes of Texas, 2 brothers: Ray (wife Patty) Baldes of Roodhouse and Walter “Dale” (wife Patsy) Baldes of Florissant, Mo. A sister Suzette Baldes preceded her in death. Janis was a longtime bartender at the LeVee Tavern in Carrollton and was loved for her endearing life loving spirit. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. She was a member of the Lone Oak Ladies Golf League. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton where services will be held on Tuesday at 10 A.M. with burial to follow in Eldred Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mr. David R. Beddingfield
David R. Beddingfield, 55, of South Jacksonville, died Friday morning, July 5, 2002 at Prairie Village Healthcare in Jacksonville. He was born on November 2, 1946 in Jacksonville the son of Donald S. and Kathryn Irene Hetrick Beddingfield.
He is survived by his mother of Jacksonville; four daughters, Theresa Potter of Chino, California; Tonya (husband, James) Crosier of New Berlin, Sonya (husband, Chuck) Rowe of Jacksonville, and Angelia Boston of Chatham; one son, David Shane Beddingfield of Chino, California; one step-daughter, Kathy Beddingfield of Chino, California; ten grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley (husband, Chuck) Clayton of Roswell, New Mexico, Sharon Dobson and Donna (husband, Alvy) Bettis, both of Jacksonville; three brothers, Charles (wife, Rosemary) Beddingfield of Ft. Myers, Florida, Kevin (wife, Teresa) Beddingfield of Athensville, and Donald (wife, Carol) Beddingfield of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Beddingfield had been employed at Oscar Meyer in Beardstown for over 20 years. More recently, he had been employed doing general maintenance in the Jacksonville area. He was an avid race fan and enjoyed country music.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2002 at Concord Cemetery at Concord. The family will meet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.
Mr. Andrew J. Beniach
Andrew J. “Andy” Beniach, Jr., 65, of Concord died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 on his farm. He was born June 14, 1936 in Virden the son of Andrew J. and Roberta Pottinger Beniach, Sr. He married Sharon Fouts on June 15, 1957 at Virden, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael (wife, Shawna) Beniach of Tuscola, Mark Beniach of Concord, and Marshall (wife, Dee) Beniach of Jacksonville; his mother Roberta Beniach of Virden, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Donna Sims.
Mr. Beniach graduated from Virden High School, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University at Macomb and his Masters Degree from Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville. He had taught business at Triopia High School for over twenty years and earlier at Barry High School; and also had owned and operated Andy’s Bookkeeping and Tax Service. Mr. Beniach was instrumental in helping his sons form their construction company, Beniach Construction Company, Inc. of Hindsboro. He had most recently farmed in the Concord area. Mr. Beniach was a member of the Church of Our Saviour and attended the Church of the Visitation in Alexander. He enjoyed working with stained glass and other crafts.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Concord Cemetery at Concord. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Warren L. Bensken
Warren L. Bensken, 75, of Urbana passed away Tuesday (January 8, 2002) at Provena Hospital in Urbana.
He was born October 31, 1926 in Atwood the son of Alva and Harriett Reedy Bensken.
He married Suzann Sanderson May 8, 1955 in Glasgow, IL. She preceded him in death September 1, 1992.
Mr. Bensken was a 1944 graduate of Atwood High School. He was served his country in the US Navy and the Marine Corp. during World War 2 and in Korea.
He worked as a Technician for Channel 20 television in Springfield and for Channel 15 in Champaign for 25 years, retiring in 1992.
Surviving are 3 sons Rodney Bensken of Marine, IL, James Kevin Bensken of Anchorage, Alaska and Eric Joel Bensken of Homer, IL, 9 grandchildren, his mother Harriett Bensken of Decatur and a sister Doris Jean Nelson of Springfield.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday (January 12, 2002) at the Winchester City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until the time of the service at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.
Mrs. Thelma E. Bentley (Hartzell)
Thelma E. Bentley, age 79, of Fishhook, Ill. died Sunday morning (March 31, 2002) at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill.
She was born December 6, 1922 in Quincy, Ill. daughter of the late Winthrop and Bertha Stock Hartzell.
She married Edward F. Bentley on July 9, 1953 in Palmyra, Mo. and he preceded her in death on December 6, 1995.
Surviving are daughters, Joan Quinn and husband Gary of Fishhook, Ill., Barbara Mitchell and husband Virgil of Meredosia, Ill.; sons, Alvin G. Bentley, Donald W. Bentley, and Billy J. Bentley all of Fishhook, Ill.; grandchildren, Russell Quinn and Edward K. Bentley of Fishhook, Ill, and Jolene Mitchell of Meredosia, Ill.; daughters by a previous marriage, Ruthie Bender of Plymouth, Indiana and Mary Ann Henderson and husband Fred of Quincy, Ill.; one son by a previous marriage, Kenneth Kirkpatrick of Quincy, Ill.; several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lillian Burton and husband Gene of Quincy, Ill., Edith Frazier and husband Herschel of Ursa, Ill., Jane McSparron and husband Robert of Hannibal, Mo., Jean Peters and husband Lloyd of Quincy, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, David Kirkpatrick; one brother, Walter Hartzell; one sister, Dorothy Schnellbacher.
Mrs. Bentley loved to knit, and do embroidery and enjoyed bingo.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday (April 3, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Jim Anders officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery near Fishhook, Ill. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mr. William G. Best
William Best, 96, of Palmyra, Illinois, passed away on February 25, 2002 at Friendship Home in Carlinville, Illinois. He was born April 6, 1905 in Palmyra, Illinois. He was the son of August Henry and Mary Ann Pratt Best.
Mr. Best was a farmer all his life. He was a lifetime member of the Macoupin County Coonhunters Association and a member of th Blooming Grove Christian Church. He married Clara (Esther) Bivin on November 27, 1926 in Gillespie, Illinois.
He is survived by 2 sons; Billy Best of Girard, Illinois; Michael (Cathern) Best of Palmyra, Illinois; 2 daughters; Kathleen (Harold) Shipley of Carlinville, Illinois, Geraldine (Loren) Qualls of Palmyra, Illinois; 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 10am, at Blooming Grove Christian Church, 4 miles southeast of Palmyra, Illinois. Family will meet friends Wednesday, February 27, 2002, from 4pm to 8pm, at the Blooming Grove Christian Church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to the Blooming Grove Christian Church, Silver Strands, or the Northwestern Rescue Squad.
He was preceeded in death by his parents and his wife, in July 1970; 5 brothers; Carl Best, Walter Best, Earl Best, Paul Best, and Authur Best; and 1 twin sister, Ruby Weller.
Mr. Charles E. Birch
Charles E. Birch, age 83, of the Liberty Village in Pittsfield, Ill. and formerly of Griggsville, Ill. died Thursday evening (January 10, 2002) at Liberty Village.
He was born January 12, 1918 in Griggsville, Ill. son of the late Elmer J. and Ruth Irene Hill Birch.
He married Nina J. Kennedy on June 8, 1941 in Griggsville, Ill. and she preceded him in death on August 26, 1999.
Surviving is one daughter, Greta K. Read and husband John of Quincy, Ill.; one son, Charles Grant Birch and wife Judy of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kristin Ierulli and husband Victor of Wichita Falls, Texas, Douglas Read and wife Stephanie of Mena, Arkansas, Jenni Szolwinski and husband Matt of Portland, Connecticut, and Julie Silva and husband Bill of Green ville, South Carolina; four great-grandchildren, Victor Ierulli II, Elizabeth Ierulli and Anthony John Ierulli all of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Anna Szolwinski of Portland, Connecticut; and one sister, Florence Rebecca “Becky” Dieker of Quincy, Ill..
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Birch was a graduate of Griggsville High School in Griggsville, Ill. and attended the University of Illinois. He farmed for many years in the Griggsville area, before retiring in 1980 and moving to Pittsfield, Ill. He was a member of the Griggsville United Methodist Church, served on the Griggsville Park Board for 20 years, was a past member of the Pike County Board of School Trustees, and was a charter member of the Old Orchard Country Club. He loved golfing, wood carving, and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday (January 14, 2002) at the Griggsville United Methodist Church with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill.. Memorials may be made to the Griggsville United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Dorothy D. Black (Duncan)
Dorothy D. Black, 95, of Jacksonville died on Wednesday morning, February 13, 2002 at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville. She was born on December 24, 1906 in Lake Bluff, the daughter of W.P. and Ada Florence Tunison Duncan. She married Paul S. Black and he preceded her in death on August 4, 1983.
Mrs. Black is survived by one nephew, Jim (wife, Vonnie) Duncan of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and her special friend, Freda (husband, Ben) Beerup of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Percy Duncan and Edward William Duncan.
Mrs. Black was a graduate of Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee. She was homemaker and enjoyed reading.
Private graveside services will be held at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Charles Wayne Blackburn
Charles Wayne “Chuck” Blackburn, 57, of Jacksonville died Sunday afternoon, February 10, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born on August 16, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Wayne Elmer, Sr. and Venetta Verldena Hannon Blackburn. He married June Boester on March 22,1974 in Jacksonville and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rodney (wife, Cara) Boester of Bloomington and Pat Blackburn of Jacksonville; his mother, Venetta Blackburn of Jacksonville; one brother, Wayne E. Blackburn, Jr. of Murrayville; one sister, Sunnie (husband, Wayne) Frederick of Decatur, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Blackburn has been the custodian at the Jacksonville YMCA for the past ten years. Prior to that he was employed at Oscar Mayer in Beardstown for nearly 20 years. He served in the United States Air Force from 1964-1968, during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Scottville Masonic Lodge and had been a member of Odd Fellows. He enjoyed fishing and high school sports, especially Jacksonville High School football. Mr. Blackburn was a friend to everyone he met, and greatly cherished those friendships.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Donor’s Choice.
Brian Michael Blackketter-Pinkerton
Brian Michael Blackketter-Pinkerton, age 23, of Carlinville, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 13, 2002 at his residence. He was born Nov. 21, 1978 in Galveston, Texas, the son of Claude Phillip and Dawn Elaine Mathews Blackketter. He is survived by his father, Phillip (wife, Diane) Blackketter of Roodhouse; his mother, Dawn Pinkerton of Ottumwa, Iowa; one son, Brayton Pinkerton of Roodhouse, his grandmothers Evelyn Gooding and Lillian Pinkerton, both of White Hall, and Dixie May of Roodhouse. Also surviving are four brothers, Brent Pinkerton of Jacksonville, John Blackketter of Roodhouse, Jeff Pinkerton of Effingham, and Jerry Lloyd Pinkerton of Roodhouse, and one sister Stephanie Blackketter of White Hall. Brian had been employed at Bunn Capitol in Springfield since 1999 and was a member of the Teamsters union. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall where visitation will be held from 10 AM until service time Monday. Burial will be at Jones Cemetery east of White Hall.
Mrs. Marjorie Blackstone (Robinson)
Marjorie Blackstone, age 85, of the Pittsfield Health Care Center in Pittsfield, Illinois and formerly of Carrollton, Illinois died Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2002 at the Health Care Center.
She was born on April 23,1916 in Carrollton, Illinois the daughter of the late Nellie and John M. Winters Robinson.
She married Robert N. Blackstone on August 31, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri and he preceded her in death on February 12,1994.
Surviving are two daughters: Janet Lane (husband, Milton Jr.) of Pittsfield, and Judith Little of Perry ; two grandsons, Eric Little (wife, Holly) of Jacksonville, and Justin Little of Perry; three great-grandchildren: Jason, Kenneth and Elizabeth Little all of Jacksonville; three step-grandchildren: Michael Carlock and Mary Carlock both of Jacksonville and Denna Browing of Perry; one brother, Norman Robinson of Jerseyville and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister; Charlotte Looper and one brother, Burns “Dick” Robinson, and her son-in-law, Larry Little.
Mrs. Blackstone was an L.P.N. at Boyd Memorial Hospital for 32 years and was a member of Carrollton First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and South Main Street neighbors.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will be in Carrollton City Cemetery in Carrollton. Visitation will be held form 6-8 on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the Carrollton First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Lucy Clay Bolling (Ditto)
Lucy Clay Bolling, 96, of Jacksonville, Illinois and formerly of Owensboro, Kentucky, died Monday, May 20, 2002 at her residence in Jacksonville. She was born on April 11, 1906 in Owensboro, the daughter of John Hugh and Clara Lee Lumpkin Ditto. She married Douglas Bolling, Sr. in March of 1926 in Nashville, Tennesse, and he preceded her in death on April 5, 1961.
She is survived by one son Dr. Douglas Bolling of Jacksonville; two grandsons, Elliot Bolling of Rockford, Illinois and Kevin Bolling of Homewood, Illinois; two grandchildren, Evan and Megan Bolling; a niece and nephew, and several cousins.
Mrs. Bolling had been Executive Secretary of the Community Chest in Owensboro and was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Owensboro. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Episcopal Church, 720 Ford Avenue, Owensboro, Kentucky, 42301. Mr. Leslie "Buck" Boots
Leslie “Buck” Boots, 75, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on February 9, 1927, in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, the son of John William II and Bertha Howell Boots. He married Donna R. Marberry on May 31, 1975 in Jacksonville and she survives. He is also survived by four sons, Terry Scheer of Joliet, John (wife, Jennifer) Boots of Winchester, Leslie E. “Bucky” (wife, Karen) Boots of Quincy, and Steve (wife, Joyce) Sweetin of Jacksonville; four daughters, Susan (husband, Archie) Scranton, Loretta Elmore, Annette Boots, and Jennifer (husband, Joseph) Ridder, all of Springfield; three step-daughters, Cheri Marez of Jacksonville and Faye Wahlsmith and Rhonda Tucker, both of Springfield; twenty-three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (wife, Evelyn) Boots of VanBuren, Missouri; and three sisters, Mary Connors of Louisiana, Missouri, Francis (husband, Gerald) Buchanan of Frankfort, Missouri, and Opal Motley of Rockport. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Boots and Walter Boots, and three sisters, Sue Boots, Lena Daniels, and Maxine Cole. Mr. Boots retired from Mobil Chemical, where he had been a machine operator for 18 years. He also owned and operated Boots Bait and Tackle in Jacksonville since 1988. Earlier in life, Mr. Boots had been a corrections officer in Joliet, and he owned the DX gas station on State Street, after moving to Jacksonville in the mid-1960’s. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post 279 and Amvets Post 100. He was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed hunting, camping, and riding his Harley-Davidson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery.
