Mr. Richard Elsworth Carney
Richard E. “Dick” Carney, Jr., 58, of rural Waverly, died at St. John’s Hospital on Sunday morning, March 10, 2002. He was born on June 16, 1943 in Springfield, a son of Richard E. Carney, Sr. and Louise Ryan Carney. He married Colleen Bivin on June 21, 1964 at Waverly Christian Church. She survives. Also surviving are daughter Taren Lynn (husband John) Stob of Elmhurst, son Wes G. Carney of Ankeny, Iowa (fiancée Cathy Miller of Lexington), brother Ronald Carney of Longmont, Colorado, brother Warren (wife Wanda) Carney of Virden, brother Gerald (wife Jane Lee) Carney of Girard, sister Nancy (husband Darrell) Edwards of Virden, and sister-in-law Jane Carney of Rosemount, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Virginia Hays and her husband Russell “Pete” Hays, brother Stuart Carney, and sister-in-law Erma Anderson Carney.
Dick was a loving father and a devoted husband of 37 years. He graduated from Virden High School and farmed until retiring in 2000. While farming, the family was selected as Outstanding Conservation Farm Family in 1981. He loved life, farming, antique farm equipment, golf, motorcycling, and traveling with his family.
He was an active member of Waverly Christian Church where he served in several leadership positions. At his death, he was a Trustee of Talkington Township. He was a 7 year Director of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau and member of Waverly Masonic Lodge 118, Girard Chapter 132 of Royal Arch Masons, Ansar Temple of Springfield, and past chairman of the Waverly Picnic Committee.
Family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Tuesday at Waverly Christian Church. Services will be held at the church on Wednesday at 12:30 pm, with the Reverend Jonathan Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Funeral services are being handled by Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of Waverly.

Mrs. Lela Mae Carson
Lela Mae Carson, 92, of Springfield, Illinois, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She was born September 20, 1909 in McLeansboro, Illinois, the daughter of William Herbert and Anna Lou Neal Fairweather. She married William P. Carson on December 21, 1944 and he preceded her in death.
She was a secretary for the Secretary of State's office in Illinois. She was a charter member of th Waverly Genelogical and Historical Society, a member of the Wilbur Chapter #358 Order of the Eastern Star in Jacksonville. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters of Waverly.
She is survived by 1 brother, Wilson Delbert (Norma Jeanne) Fairweather of New Berlin, Illinois.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30am, Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois. Family will receive friends from 9am until service time on Wednesday. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to Waverly East Cemetery or the donors choice.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers; Carl Fairweather, Charles E. Fairweather, and William E. Fairweather.
John D. Carter, Jr.
John D. Carter Jr., 86, of Carrollton died at 11:36 P.M. on Tuesday Aug. 13, 2002 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. born in Carrollton on April 28, 1916, he was the son of the late John F. and Bessie Little Carter. On May 16, 1938 he married Janet “Sis” Burton in Bowling Green , Mo. and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law: Jean and Bill Campbell of Godfrey, 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Roger and Sue Carter of Twin Falls, Idaho and Jay and Raben Andrews-Carter of St. Louis. 9 grandchildren: John Carter, Jim Carter, Jolene Segura, Sally Carter, Tim Carter, Jefry Campbell, Rachael Campbell, Katharina Andrews-Carter and Klara Andrews-Carter and 7 great grandchildren and a brother R. Neil Carter of Carrollton also survive. He was preceded in death by a son David and a brother Paul. Mr. Carter was a lifelong farmer and carpenter. He was a past President of the Green e Co. Farm Bureau and a member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:30 - 8 P.M. on Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11:30 A.M. at the Carrollton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carrollton United Methodist Church.
Mr. Ralph M. Carter
Ralph M. Carter, 84, of Jacksonville, died Friday evening, October 11, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on July 20, 1918 in Jacksonville, the son of W.C. and Georgia Hembrough Carter. He married Martha Cunningham on February 27, 1945 in Murrayville and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Larry (wife, Sheila) Carter of Jacksonville; one daughter, Barbara (husband, Gary) Blake of Normal; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; two step- great- grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Carter of Roodhouse and Earl (wife, Winnie) Carter of Frankin; two sisters, Edith Johnson of Springfield and Mary Roland of Jacksonville, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Carter farmed near Palmyra for many years. He served in the United States Army. Mr. Carter was a lifetime member of the farm bureau and a member of the Palmyra Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Stanley "Boog" Carter
Stanley V. “Boog” Carter, 72, of Carrollton died at 4:49 A.M. on Friday
April 5, 2002 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
Born in Carrollton on April 7, 1929 he was the son of the late Charles F.
and Vaughn L. Williams Carter.
On Dec. 28, 1957 he married the former Mary L. Zulauf in Chapin and
she survives. Also surviving are: 3 daughters and sons in law: Sandra and
Dennis Wright of Green field, Susan and Richard Parks of Jerseyville and
Sharon and Gene Wade of Berdan, a son and daughter-in-law: Shane and
Tina Carter of Carrollton. 6 grandchildren: Tim, Lisa, Nick, Erika,
Christopher and Caleb. A sister Athlone Campagna of Godfrey also
survives. He was preceded in death by an infant son Earl Franklin Carter, a
brother Dale Carter and a sister Harriet Milner.
Mr. Carter was a Army veteran serving from 1951-1953. He worked at
Baughman Mfg. in Jerseyville for many years and farmed until retirement.
Stanley enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. on Monday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton. Private graveside services will be held at a later
date. Memorials may be made to the Carter Cemetery.
Mrs. Suellen Killam Casson
Suellen Killam Casson, 59, of Jacksonville, died Monday morning, October 28, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was born on October 3, 1943, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Edward L. and Lois Handy Killam. She married Tom Casson on October 25, 1963, in Jacksonville. She is survived by her mother, Lois Killam of Jacksonville; two sons, Tom (wife, Angela) Casson of Jacksonville and Tim (wife, Kari McLean) Casson of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren, one great-grandson; one brother, Edward L. Killam of Rancho Mirage, California, and her former husband, Tom (wife, Debbie) Casson of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her father. Mrs. Casson was a counselor with Cass County Mental Health for over 20 years. She was a fan of all sports, but her favorites were the St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Cubs. The family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Family and friends will be invited to share memories of Mrs. Casson at the conclusion of the visitation. Memorials are suggested to Cass County Mental Health or Liberty Cemetery.
Rose Mardel Cawthon (Conrad)
Rose Mardel Cawthon, 63, of Griggsville passed away Tuesday afternoon (June 18, 2002) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. She was born March 13, 1939 near Griggsville the daughter of the late Clyde V. and Esther Louise Easley Conrad. She married Sanford “Buzz” Cawthon in 1966. He preceded her in death October 10, 1997. Also preceding her were her parents 3 brothers Billy, Jess and Paul Conrad and 4 sisters Helen Henry, Ruth Labee, Irene Conrad and Marjorie Wilson. Mrs. Cawthon attended Griggsville schools; she worked at Brown Shoe Company for 14 years and had also been a waitress at E&D Cafe in Griggsville. Her time was devoted to her family and she also helped with the Griggsville Apple Festival for several years. Surviving are her 2 sons Kevin E. (wife Theresa) Cawthon and Nathan Trent Cawthon, both of Griggsville. 3 grandsons Brenton, Bryon and Josh Cawthon. A sister Marcel Moore of Perry a brother Clyde Conrad Jr. of Pittsfield, a half sister Arlene Lambert of Augusta, IL, 2 half brothers Robert Hurst of Griggsville and Bill Hurst of Cairo, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday (June 22, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. Burial will be in the Griggsville Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the family.
Mr. Robert Allen Caywood
Robert Allen Caywood, 68, of Chapin died Friday morning, February 8, 2002 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. He was born on November 25, 1933 in Concord the son of Robert E. and Mary Brockhouse Caywood.
He is survived by one sister, Peggy (husband, Richard) Brennan of Park Ridge, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mr. Caywood farmed in the Concord and Chapin areas of Morgan County for many years. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, hunting, and collecting artifacts. He had a keen interest in Americana. Mr Caywood had served in the United States Army, stationed in Korea from 1956-58.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2002 at Concord Cemetery at Concord. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Sunday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Concord United Methodist Church or St. John’s Hospice.
Mr. Shayne Allen Chandler
Shayne Allen Chandler, 32, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002 at University Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky , due to an automobile accident. He was born December 28, 1969 in Pinckneyville, Illinois. He is the son of Robert S. Chandler Jr. and Mary Beth Jarrett Chandler of Franklin, Illinois.
He was a graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, Illinois in 1988. He was employed as the General Manager of Max and Erma’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
He is survived by his parents; 1 brother, Robbie Scott Chandler of Dunwoody, Georgia; 2 sisters, Kelly Hinds of Franklin, Illinois; and his twin sister, Shannon Chandler of Franklin, Illinois; 2 grandmothers, Wanda Jarrett Loucks of Jonesboro, Illinois, Ellouise Chandler of Pinckneyville, Illinois; 1 nephew, Ryan Armstrong of Franklin, Illinois; 3 nieces, Elizabeth Large, Emily Large, and Ashley Armstrong all of Franklin, Illinois.
Funeral services will be at 10:30, Monday, March 4, 2002 at the Franklin Methodist Church in Franklin, Illinois. Mrs. Gladys E. Chaney (Smith)
Gladys E. Chaney, 80, of Jacksonville died Monday morning, March 18, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born March 21, 1921 in Griggsville the daughter of George T. and Beulah Mae Smith. She married William Chester Chaney on June 25, 1980 in Meansville, Georgia and he survives.
She is also survived by several brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Chaney was a nurses’ aid for 17 years and later worked as a private duty nurse.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor’s choice. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Reamer G. Childress
Reamer G. Childress, 78, of Brighton died on Monday Sept. 9, 2002 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton. born in Doniphan, Mo. on Sept. 17, 1923 he was the son of the late Major and Letha Jones Childress. He married the former Ann Dugger in Rockbridge on Dec. 23, 1945 and she survives. Also surviving are 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Bruce and Janice Childress of Brighton, Randy and Connie Childress of Brighton, 3 daughters and two sons-in-law: Janis Kuebrich of Alton, Becky and Gene McGowen of Brighton and Cindy and Brad Kipling of Brighton, 11 grandchildren: Nicolee and Julie Childress, Ryan, Justin and Megan Childress, Neely and Danielle Kipling all of Brighton, Frank (wife Karen) Kuebrich of New Bern, Judd Kuebrich of Vandalia, Kelly (Shawn) Graham of Grafton, 2 step grandchildren: J.R. McGowen of Grafton and Michelle (McGowen) of Murphreesboro, Tenn. 3 greatgranchildren: Kali Korte, Ayla Pace, and Samantha Graham, a sister Geneva Wilson of Belleville. He was preceded in death by a brother Dick Childress. Mr. Childress was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the 87th Mountain Infantry Reg., He retired from General Motors after 20 years. He was a member of the Alton VFW Post #01308, the Jerseyville Moose Lodge #695 and the First Southern Baptist of Brighton. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton where services will be held of Thursday at 10 A.M. with burial in the Land Cemetery West of Palmyra. Mr. Charles C. Chrisman Jr.
Charles C. Chrisman, Jr., age 84, of Roodhouse, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 20, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born Aug. 31, 1917 in Meredosia, the son of Charles C. and Leta Rasor Chrisman, Sr. He married Anna Lucille Anderson on Oct. 27, 1947 in White Hall and she preceded him in death on June 25, 2002. He is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann (husband, Tom) Weitzel of Springfield; one son, Charles C. (wife, Valerie) Chrisman, III of Springfield; one stepson, Donald E. (wife, Evelyn) Cox of Atoka, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one brother, Byron Chrisman of Joliet. Mr. Chrisman worked at Anderson Clayton in Jacksonville for 27 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the E.M. Husted Masonic Lodge 796 A.F. & A.M. in Roodhouse. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, and was a member and past commander of the Roodhouse American Legion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse with burial at Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse. The family will meet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where public Masonic services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Anna Lucille Chrisman (Anderson)
Anna Lucille Chrisman, age 80, of Roodhouse, died Tuesday evening,
June 25, 2002 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
She was born Jan. 17, 1922 in White Hall, the daughter of Benjamin
and Dora Book Anderson.
She married Charles C. Chrisman on Oct. 27, 1947 in White Hall and
he survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Donald E. (wife, Evelyn) Cox of
Atoka, Tennessee and Charles C. (wife, Valerie) Chrisman, III of Springfield;
one daughter, Mary Ann (husband, Tom) Weitzel of Springfield; seven
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one brother, James Anderson of
Meredosia. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mina Shehorn.
Mrs. Chrisman was a member of the Roodhouse American Legion
Auxiliary. She worked at the Roodhouse Envelope Company for many
years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002 at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse with burial at Fernwood
Cemetery in Roodhouse. The family will meet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American
Heart Association.
Jerry J. Chrisman
Jerry J. Chrisman, 56, of Carrollton died at 6:25 A.M. on Thursday Nov. 28, 2002 at his residence. born in Carrollton on June 9, 1946 he was the son of the late Kenneth and Eleanor Trusty Chrisman. He was married to the former Chris Kaiser. Surviving are 2 daughters: Melissa (husband Tony) Cunningham of Plainview and Jennifer Chrisman of Carrollton, 2 grandchildren: Carley and Dylan. Mr. Chrisman had a variety of talents and most recently worked as assistant greenskeeper at the Lone Oak Golf Club near Carrollton. He will be sadly missed for his smile, his manner and his caring for family and friends. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Saturday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 P.M. with burial in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family or Blessing Hospice of Green e Co.
Mr. Darrell R. Clark
Darrell R. Clark, 55, of Jacksonville died early Wednesday morning, May 29, 2002 at his residence. He was born on August 9, 1946 in Scottville the son of Cordelia Clark. He married Rosalind Howard Brant on May 31, 1968 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Fred (wife, Michelle) Brant of Jacksonville; two daughters, Kimberly (husband, William, Jr.) West of Jacksonville and Sherri Oxencis of Pawnee; seven grandchildren, and one sister, Vivian Dugger of Modesto.
Mr. Clark had been employed at Nestle for 31 years, and was planning to retire in July. He was a founding member of Pioneer Point Camping Club at Lake Jacksonville, and enjoyed camping and fishing. Mr. Clark served in the United States Army as a cook and was a member of American Legion Post 279 in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Ebenezer Cemetery, north of Jacksonville. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Food Pantry or Prairieland Heritage Museum.
Mrs. Jeane Clark (Zulauf)
Jeane Clark, 79, of Arenzville died Monday morning, March 4, 2002 at Provena Mercy Center in Aurora. She was born on June 28, 1922 in Arenzville the daughter of John and Edna Ransom Zulauf. She married Ralph Hamilton Clark on November 17, 1940 in Bowling Green , Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1985.
She is survived by one son, Landis (wife, Cindy) Clark of Livermore, Colorado; two daughters, Deborah (husband, Tris) Schnepper of Rochester and Rebecca (husband, James) Decker of North Aurora; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Nelson and Grace Schnitker, both of Arenzville. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter and several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Clark worked as a hearing officer for the State of Illinois Secretary of State, retiring in 1985. She was a lifetime member of the Arenzville United Methodist Church where she was a member of United Methodist Women and the Monday Morning Bible Group. Mrs. Clark was a member of the Arenzville Women’s Club, Emblem Club, and was a charter member of the Arenzville American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Clark enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, and entertaining.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at the Arenzville United Methodist Church with burial at Arenzville East Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society of America or the Arenzville United Methodist Church.
Ms. Pearl E. Clark
Pearl E. Clark, 92, of Jacksonville died Friday evening, April 12, 2002 at Passavant Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville. She was born on June 22, 1909 in Arcadia the daughter of Homer and Dora Mae Bacon Clark.
She is survived by one sister, Mary E. Simmons of Roodhouse; one niece, Patty Clark Sims of Tucson, Arizona; two great-nieces and four great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Allen Clark.
Ms. Clark was employed at MacMurray College from 1955 to 1979. During her years at the college she held many different positions including Residence Hall Director, Post Office Director, and Switchboard Director. She also worked at the dining hall and library. Ms. Clark was a longtime Avon representative, known for making her rounds in the community on her bicycle. She was a member of Westfair Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Murrayville Cemetery at Murrayville. The family will meet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to MacMurray College, Westfair Baptist Church, or Manchester Baptist Church.
Mrs. Charlotte Swanson Cleeland
Charlotte Swanson Cleeland, 97, of Jacksonville, died Monday morning, September 23, 2002 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on October 28, 1904 near Renville, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles Oscar and Esther Christine Holmberg Swanson. She married Joseph Cawley Cleeland on July 2, 1935 and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1965. She is survived by one son, Dr. Charles S. Cleeland of Houston Texas; one daughter, Christine (husband, William) Erenberg of Highland Park; and five grandchildren, Sarah (husband, Jeff) Cleeland Knight, Shalisha Erenberg, Joshana Erenberg, Sheva Erenberg, and Charles Travis Cleeland. Mrs. Cleeland was a well-known artist and interior designer in the Jacksonville area. As an art professor, she taught at Albion College in Michigan and MacMurray College in Jacksonville. As a strong supporter of the arts, she was a co-founder of the Beaux Arts Ball and an inspiration to countless young art and interior design students. She was a promoter of the history of Civil War General Benjamin Grierson, and was instrumental in getting his Jacksonville home placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mrs. Cleeland was a graduate of the University of Kansas and received her Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. She was recipient of an honorary Doctor of Art degree from MacMurray College. She was a longtime member of Wednesday Class in Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at the Annie Merner Chapel on the MacMurray College campus in Jacksonville. Burial will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Putnam Center for the Arts at MacMurray College. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Leonard L. Clements
Leonard L. Clements, 83, of Bluffs died Monday evening, July 15, 2002 at Prairie Village Healthcare in Jacksonville. He was born on April 28, 1919 in Taneyville, Missouri, the son of Lawrence and Estalee Clements.
He is survived by his cousins and caregiver, Clara Shepard of Bluffs; two brothers, Clarence Clements of Wilmington and Allen Clements of Iceland; two sister, Rowene (husband, Charles) Huff of New Berlin and Lora Knapp of Clarence, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eunice King.
Mr. Clements was a night watchman at Eli Bridge Company in Jacksonville for ten years, retiring on September 2, 1989. Earlier in life he had worked in Florida building mobile homes, and with the Tropicana Orange Juice Company. When he returned to Illinois, he worked as a farmhand in Franklin.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2002 at the Neece Funeral Home at Waverly with burial at Wood Wreath Cemetery near New Berlin. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
