Thelma Clark Covey (Clark)
Thelma Clark Covey, age 96, died on Monday at 6 A.M. at Reisch Mem.
Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Services celebrating her life will be at 2 P.M. on Wednesday at the
Carrollton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Wright and Rev. Betty
Coffey officiating. Visitation will be 1 hr. prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Covey was born Jan. 2, 1906 in Murrayville, Il., the daughter of the
late Roy and Jennie Clark. She married Howard R. Covey on June 27, 1925
in Evanston, Il. and he preceded her in death in 1970.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Mrs. Carmen Elkin of Macomb, Mrs. Mary
Ellen Satterfield and her husband Robert of West Chicago and Mrs. Janet
Meier and her husband Robert of Charleston,Il. , 11 grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren. Preceding her in death beside her parents and husband are an infant daughter and a son Charles, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
Her husband and her owned and operated the Gamble Store for nine
years prior to his death. She was a member of the Carrollton United
Methodist Church, the Linder Gettogether Club, the Kane Eastern Star and
Our Own Pasttime Club.
She was a wonderful cook and her grandchildren always looked forward
to her cookies when they visited. She baked wonderful pies and her
speciality was nutloaf candy at Christmas time for over 50 years.
She was an accomplished vocalist and a regular member of the Grace
Methodist Church Choir. She was active in the Eastern Star and was Past
Worthy Matron in Murrayville, Jacksonville and Kane.
Burial will be in Murrayville Cemetery with memorials to Carrollton
Methodist Ch. or the Eastern Star. Airsman-Hires in Carrollton is in charge.
Bertha E. Craver
Bertha E. Craver, 99, of Winchester passed away early Tuesday morning (September 10, 2002) at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield. She was born September 19, 1902 in Kansas City, Missouri the daughter of the late Paul A. and Bertha Eloise Nugent Johnstone. She married Charles C. Craver Jr. in Kansas City. He preceded her in death March 10, 1979. Also preceding her in death were 2 brothers Ted and Paul Johnstone and a sister Emma Jean Papenfuss. Mrs. Craver graduated from high school in Kansas City; she attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, and graduated from William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri with a BA in English Literature. Mrs. Craver was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, the Winchester United Methodist Church, PEO for over 60 years and the O.Henryettas, a Literary Society. Survivors include her son Charles C. Craver III of Winchester and 2 nephews Ted Johnstone of Chicago, and Ted Papenfuss of Berkley, California. Funeral service will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday (September 12, 2002) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Friends may call after 4:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 PM until the time of the service. Committal services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday (September 13) at Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to the Community outreach program at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winchester.
Joseph M. Cronin
Joseph M. Cronin, 68, of Carrollton died at 7:50 P.M. on Tuesday July 16,
2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Born in Berdan on May 31, 1934 he was the son of the late Thomas and
Rosalie Hanlon Cronin.
On March 3, 1962 he married the former Bernice Pranger in Carrollton
and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Mike Cronin of Godfrey,
John P. “Pat” Cronin of Springfield, 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Sharon
and Thomas Thompson of Evanston, Donna and Mike Canavan of
Springfield, 4 grandchildren: Kyle and Colin Thompson and Ryan and
Nathan Canavan, a step grandchild: Emily Thompson, a brother : Robert
Cronin and 3 sisters: Rosemary Frede of Florissant, Mo., Dorothy Neubauer
of Springfield and Phyllis Cronin of Carlinville. He was preceded in death
by an infant son: Robert T. Cronin and 2 brothers: John P. and Thomas
Cronin.
Joe was owner/operator of the Levee Tavern in Carrollton for 37 years
retiring in 1997. He was a Korean Conflict Veteran of the U.S. Army and a
member of the Jerseyville Elks Club and St. John’s Catholic Church in
Carrollton. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and had been an avid bowler for
years. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton with funeral mass celebrated on Friday at 10
A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in the Church
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or St. John’s School, the
Green e Co. Health Dept. or Gambro Heathcare in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Betty F. Cunningham (Fowler)
Betty F. Cunningham, age 87, of the Griggsville Estates Boarding Home in Griggsville, Ill. and formerly of Pittsfield, Ill. died Tuesday afternoon (May 7, 2002) at the boarding home.
She was born April 20, 1915 in New Hartford, Ill. daughter of the late Henry C. and Phoebe C. Bauer Fowler.
She married Carl A. Cunningham on November 16, 1935 in Pike County, Ill. and he preceded her in death July 31, 1984.
Surviving is one daughter, Catherine C. Foster and husband James A. of Mason Neck, Virginia; one son, Carl A. Cunningham and wife Alana of Pittsfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, James A. Foster III and wife Lisa of Johnson City, Tennessee, Susan F. Mahon and husband Mike of George Washington’s Birthplace, Virginia, Samuel C. Cunningham and wife Heather of El Cajon, California, Stewart C. Cunningham and wife Rhonda of Pittsfield, Ill., and Shad C. Cunningham and wife Janet of Rushville, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Jay Foster , Lauren Foster , and Grace Foster all of Johnson City, Tennessee, Addie Cunningham of Pittsfield, Ill. and Shayne Cunningham of El Cajon, California; and one sister, Frances Keim and husband Harry of Carrollton, Ill..
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Seth Cunningham.
Mrs. Cunningham was a 1932 graduate of Higbee High School and attended Western Illinois State Teacher’s College in Macomb, Ill. graduating in 1934. She taught at various country schools in Pike County, Ill. before teaching at Pittsfield’s East and South School’s for 30 years. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association, Illinois Education Association, National Education Association, Order of the Easter Star Chapter #195, and BPW. She was a very active member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church where she was a member since 1924, and was a member of the Women’s Club, Bethany Circle and the Priscilla Club and was Women of the Year at the church. She was a hospice volunteer and a volunteer at the Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill..
Mrs. Cunningham with her husband ran a hatchery and feed store in Pittsfield, Ill. for
many years as well as Carl’s Service and Supply in Pittsfield, Ill. for 25 years retiring in 1982.
Among her many joys was sewing. She was a seamstress and made clothing for her daughter as well as sewing crafts for the church. In addition, she gave piano lessons, and enjoyed flower gardening.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (May 11, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Dan King officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Blessing Hospice of Pike County, Ill. c/o the funeral home.
Mrs. Rosemary I. Dame (Coulter)
Rosemary I. Dame, 70, of South Jacksonville, died Saturday morning, August 31, 2002 at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on August 26, 1932 in Macon the daughter of Wilmer and Elsie Spaulding Coulter. She married Carlyle E. Dame on July 22, 1950 in Decatur, and he survives. She is also survived by one son, Carlyle E. (wife, Wanda) Dame, Jr. of Ashland; three daughters, Peggy (husband, Brian) McClellan of Rock Island, Judy (husband, Malcolm) McSweyn of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Hannah (husband, Mike) Nelson of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, two brothers, Noel (wife, Phyllis) Coulter of Woodhaven, Michigand and Barton (wife, Gizelle) Coulter of Southgate, Michigan; three sisters, Janet Smith of Urbana, Martha (husband, Jim) Nalefski of Decatur, and Nancy (husband, Paul) Shearer of Moweaqua; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Gregory. Mrs. Dame was a retired interior designer. She belonged to the Altrusa Society, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Morgan County Republican Association, American Heart Association, and the Jacksonville Art Association. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Fairlawn Cemetery at Decatur. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. Blanche M. Davidson (Young)
Blanche M. Davidson, age 92, of East Peoria, Ill. and formerly of Griggsville, Ill. died Wednesday afternoon (February 13, 2002) at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria, Ill.
She was born August 8, 1909 in Griggsville, Ill. daughter of the late Effie Ross and Alva Young.
She married W. Harold Davidson on November 18, 1933 in Lincoln, Ill. and he preceded her in death on September 22, 1981.
Surviving is one daughter, Suzanne Berger and husband Donald of Rockford, Ill.; two grandchildren, Nellie and Ted Berger of Rockford, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her sister Edith Bradshaw and her brother George Young.
Mrs. Davidson was a schoolteacher for many years in Pike County, Ill. and Peoria area schools. She was a member of the Forrest Hill United Methodist Church in Peoria, Ill., Peoria Area Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, and Royal Neighbors of America.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (February 16, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. Henry Crede officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Forrest Hill United Methodist Church.
Tony Davidson
Tony Davidson, 40, of Winchester was pronounced dead unexpectedly on
Wed. Jan. 16, 2002 at 5:15 A.M. in Carrollton.
Born in Carrollton on Aug. 20, 1961 he was the son of the late Barbara
Baumgartner Davidson and Paul Davidson of Carrollton.
Surviving besides his father are 2 daughters: Tabitha Davidson (17)
of Roodhouse, Whitney Davidson (11) of East Alton and a son Tony C.
Davidson (15) of Roodhouse, 6 brothers: Rick, Danny, Jerry, Dick, Paul
Jr.and Marion Davidson and 5 sisters: Belinda Gress, Tammie Hiles, Pam
Eisch, Susan Williams and Joy Davidson.
He was employed by Illinois Valley Paving in Winchester for 9 years as
an operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 965 of
Springfield.
Graveside rites will be held on Saturday at 10 A.M. at the Carrollton
City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his children. Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Paul Allen Dawdy
Paul Allen Dawdy, age 85, of Carrollton, died at 12:00 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 8, 2002 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 26, 1916 in Barrow, the son of Rev. Ernest and
Elma Steelman Dawdy.
He married Charlice Ada McEvers on Nov. 10, 1937 in Bowling
Green , Missouri and she survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Judy Hutton of Carrollton;
Jerrie (husband, Danny) Boirum of Grafton and Reva (husband, Jarvis)
Goodall of Springfield; one son, Randy (wife, Kathy) Dawdy of
Minnetonka, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Mindy Slough of Oletha, KS;
Gina Hagen of Edwardsville; Christy Reynolds of Springfield; T.R. Hutton
and Tim Hutton, both of Madison Heights, MI; Jason Dawdy of Denver,
CO; Christopher Dawdy of White Hall; Ashley Goodall and Nick Goodall,
both of Springfield; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one son, Larry Dawdy (surviving wife, Linda of White Hall); one sister,
Blanche Arnold; and two brothers, Harley and Buford Dawdy.
Mr. Dawdy was a member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church and
had served as a deacon and as a trustee there. He retired from CIPS in 1981
after over 30 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World
War II. He had served as the mayor of Patterson and was also on the school
board there. He later served two terms as a Green e County Board member.
He was a member and past president of the Carrollton Lions Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 at
the Carrollton First Baptist Church with burial at the Carrollton City
Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to the
First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund.
Mr. Lawrence R. Day
Lawrence R. Day, 45, of Jacksonville, died Friday evening, September 13, 2002 in Jacksonville. He was born on August 6, 1957 in Jacksonville, the son of Raymond W. and Bonita Cannon Day. He married Terrie Barker on May 14, 1988 in Jacksonville and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Christopher L. Day, age 10, at home; his parents, Raymond and Bonita Day of Jacksonville; one sister, Marshalla (husband, Dr. Jay) Yadav of Huntington Valley, Ohio; and three nephews and one niece. Mr. Day was an operator at Pactiv in Jacksonville for over 11 years. He was previously employed with the Wisconsin Barge Line. He was a 1975 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a member of Centenary United Methodist. He enjoyed boating and motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson; and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Christopher Day’s Education Fund.
Mrs. Sharon Lynne Dehner (Lynch)
Sharon Lynne Dehner, 54, of Waverly, Illinois, died at her home Saturday, April 20, 2002. She was born November 20, 1947 in Michigan City, Indiana, the daughter of E. G.and Agnes Akridge. She married Jeffrey L. Dehner September 24, 1983 in Springfield, Illinois.
She is survived by her husband; her mother Agnes and step-father R. Al Lynch of Springfield, Illinois; 2 brothers, Michael Lynch of Atlanta, Georgia; James Lynch of Montclair, New Jersey; 2 sisters; Patricia Aulich of Springfield, Illinois; Lynda Savage of Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces, and nephews.
Sharon was employed as a Office Manager for Jeff Dehner American Family Insurance. Mrs. Dehner was known as an accomplished horsewomen. She and her husband were instrumental in introducing the Missouri Foxtrotter breed to the Illinois State Fair Society Horse Show and they started the Illinois Foxtrotter Association. She was a member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her father; E.G. Akridge and sister, Judith Akridge Andreatta.
Funeral services will be 10am, Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Waverly, Illinois. Family will meet friends from 4pm to 8pm, Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church.Prayer services will be at 4pm. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery in Waverly, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to St. Sebastian Perpetual Care Fund or Missouri Foxtrotter Association Youth Scholarship Program.
Mrs. Elsie Mae DeLong (Reynolds)
Elsie Mae DeLong, 82, passed away at her home in Waverly, Illinois, Monday, September 2, 2002. She was born August 16, 1920 in Maxwell Township, near Waverly, the daughter of Clarence E. and Lucina Dubell Dodge Reynolds. She married Ralph Lindell DeLong on January 31, 1939 in Palmyra, Mo. He preceeded her in death on January 2, 1993. Elsie and her siblings where raised by relatives, and upon her marriage to Lindell their home became home to her siblings. She and her husband lived 4 miles southwest of Waverly from 1938-1984,then they moved into Waverly, after her husband suffered a severe stroke. She cared for him eight and a half years with the help of her children. She was always there to help friends, neighbors, and family in need. She also cared for her brother-in-law, Delbert DeLong, after an accident which seriosly injured him, while killing his wife and unborn daughter. She helped organize the South Side Birthday Club in March 1940, at the home of Hope Sullivan, which was in existence for more than fifty years. The club contributed many things including making bandages during Word War 2. Also, she was a member of West Union Community Club for many years, which was held at the West Union School, where her fahter-in law and his father taught for many years. She and her husband were 4-H leaders and they had many Baptist youth gatherings in their home. Elsie was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waverly, since childhood. She is survived by 2 daughters; Millie Walters and Sandra Mitchell, both of Waverly, Illinois; 1 daughter-in-law, Vicky DeLong of Waverly, Illinois; 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, 4 step great great grandchildren ; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great great nieces and nepews. She was precceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 son; Russell Lindell DeLong; 1 great grandson, Jacob Kyle White; 1 brother; James Reynolds; 1 step-brother, Clarence Edward Reynolds Jr.; 5 sisters; Esther Decker, Edith Bradley, Elizabeth June Reynolds, Eva Reynolds, and Edna Henke. Funeral services will be at 2pm, Saturday, September 7, 2002 at the Neece Funeral home in Waverly. Family will meet friends from 4pm to 8pm, Friday, September 6, 2002. burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Waverly Fire and Rescue Squad.
