Mrs. Lena Bertha Dennison (Hammer)
Lena Bertha Hammer Dennison, 94, of Ellisville, Missouri, died Saturday morning, July 27, 2002 at Garden View Care Center of Chesterfield, Missouri. She was born on December 15, 1907 in Arenzville, the daughter of Frank D. and Bertha Amelia Traeger Hammer. She married Ernest Howard “Denny” Dennison on October 17, 1931, in LaSalle, and he preceded her in death on January 20, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Anita (husband, Jim) Dennison Oberwetter of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Randle (wife, Virginia) Dennison of Chesterfield, Missouri and Larry (wife, Luanne) Dennison of Creve Coeur, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Laurie Busby, Ernest Howard (wife, Laura) Dennison, III, Lisa Dennison, Larry (wife, Cindy) Dennison, Jr., Ellen Oberwetter, Rea Oberwetter, and Brooke Oberwetter; five great-grandchildren, Mathew Dennsion, Samantha Dennison, Zachary Dennison, Taylor Dennison, and Valerie Christiana Marie Dennison; one sister, Wilhelmina Haffner of St. Louis; two brothers, Frank J. Hammer of Attleboro, Massachusetts and Robert W. Hammer of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dennison was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Peck, Lydia F. Kleinschmidt, and Emma Kaitschuk; and two brothers, Frederick Hammer and the Rev. Herman Hammer. Mrs. Dennison attended Carthage College and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville in 1957. A longtime educator, Mrs. Dennison began teaching at the age of 17 in the rural schools of Cass County, including the school at the village of Bluff Springs, and the Springer School and Union Grove Schools, both near Arenzville. She returned to teaching in 1954 with the Macon Public Schools in Macon, Missouri, later moving to the Hudson School at Webster Groves, Missouri. While at Macon, she developed the first kindergarten class at that school and also started the first “Mother’s Sunday School Class” at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hannibal. She served as guest organist at churches in Illinois, Missouri, and at Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada. She served as president of the PTA at Turner School at Hannibal. Mrs. Dennison retired from education in 1972, moving to Sarasota, Florida with her husband. She returned to St. Louis in 1998. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Manchester. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2002 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Arenzville with burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Manchester, or the United Church of Canada at Nestor Falls, Ontario.
Mrs. Frances Karlene DeVault (Craigmiles)
Frances Karlene DeVault, age 77, of Jacksonville, formerly of White Hall, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, 2002 at Passavant Transitional Care Unit. She was born March 20, 1925 in Carrollton, the daughter of George and Ida Brewer Craigmiles, Sr. She married Russell DeVault in 1947 in White Hall and he preceded her in death on July 20, 1975. She is survived by two daughters, Tammy (husband, Harold) Winters of White Hall and Jacque (husband, Bobby) Crum of South Jacksonville; one son, Robert Russell DeVault (fiancée, Bonnie Hardwick) of White Hall; and two grandchildren, Eric Winters of St. Louis and Traci Johnisee of Roodhouse. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Jerry, Truman, Donald, George, Paul and Adrian Craigmiles. Mrs. DeVault worked at Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville for 19 years. After her retirement from Mobil Chemical, she cared for elderly people in their homes for several years. She was a member of the Jacksonville VFW Auxiliary since 1964. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville. She loved to read the Coonridge Digest! She enjoyed going to plays, musicals and band concerts. She also loved flowers, butterflies and feeding birds. In later years, she enjoyed playing cards with friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the North Green e Food Pantry, Home Health Services of the Green e County Health Dept, or the Passavant Area Hospital Chaplains Fund.
Mr. Claude Clarence Donaldson
Claude Clarence Donaldson, 87, of Ashland died Friday morning, April 26, 2002 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. He was born on January 9, 1915 in Cass County the son of Clarence T. and Inez Scholes Donaldson. He married Grace A. Twyford on May 15, 1938 in Oakwood, Missouri and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Russell (wife, Clover) Donaldson of Ashland; one daughter, Beverly (husband, Warren) Roach of Ashland; four Grandchildren and four Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil Donaldson and Lee Donaldson (surviving wife, Helen of Medford, Oregon), and one sister, Irene Edwards.
Mr. Donaldson farmed his entire life. As a young man he worked as a hired hand for various farmers in the Virginia area. He also worked at the Philadephia Elevator. In 1955, he purchased a farm in the Literberry area and farmed there for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Morgan County Farm Bureau and the Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia. His major interests were his family and farming. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Ashland City Cemetery at Ashland. The family will meet friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
Ms. Ruth Maxine Dorothy
Ruth Maxine Dorothy, 84, of South Jacksonville died Thursday afternoon, May 16, 2002 at her residence. She was born on December 23, 1917 at Burnside, the daughter of Ethern L. and Maude Funkhouser Dorothy.
Ms. Dorothy is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, June Dulaney; one brother, Lyndell; and two half-brothers, Coy and Everett.
Ms. Dorothy graduated from Carthage High School in Carthage, Gem City Business College in Quincy, and Central Bible College at Springfield, Missouri. She was employed by the Department of War in Washington, D.C. during World War II. Following the war, she was employed as Secretary to the Director of Development and Patent Attorney at the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa. She later served as Secretary to the Director of Social Services at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Midwest Christian Center in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home. Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage, Illinois. Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Midwest Christian Center.
Mr. Clinton Leroy Dunbar
Clinton Leroy Dunbar, 75, of Waverly, formerly St. James, IL. Area, died Thursday, December 26, 2002 in Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. He was born July 10, 1927 in St. James, IL, the son of Clinton Berlin and Mattie Levora Landreth Dunbar. He married Frances Evelyn Stein on June 20, 1948 in Loogootee, IL. and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Clinton Roy Dunbar of St. James, IL, Clarence Steven Dunbar of Bloomington, Ind;, two daughters: Nancy Ann (husband John) Holman of Indianapolis, Ind, Cathy Jo (husband Joseph) Bostic of Waverly, IL. two sisters Marjorie Jordon of Indianapolis, Ind, Evelyn Williams of Collegedale, Tennessee, eight grandchildren, two of which were raised in the home; Seth Hendrickson of Tampa, Florida and Gabriel Hendrickson of Waverly, IL. and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: one daughter Susan Denise Hendrickson, who died in 1983, one grandson Joshua Hendrickson who died in 1988, and two sisters Delva Jones and Hazel Young. He was a retired specialized services technician in the natural gas field, a veteran of WWII, a Member of Waverly American Legion Post # 262, Waverly VFW Post 4866, NRA, Quails Unlimited, and St. Elmo Masonic Lodge, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Macedonia Christian Church at St. James, IL. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday December 30, 2002 in Neece Funeral Home E. Route 104 in Waverly, Illinois. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday December 29, 2002 from 5 until 8 pm. Burial will be in Stein-Stine Cemetery in St. James, Il. Mrs. Anna May Dunn (Knetzer)
Anna May Dunn, 84, of Winchester passed away early Friday morning (July 5, 2002) at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born March 25, 1918 in Carlinville, the daughter of the late Sebastian and Anna Mary Dietz Knetzer.
She married Russell Powell Dunn August 1, 1942 in Carlinville. He preceded her in death May 30, 2001. Also preceding her in death were sisters Agnes Massey, Mary Knetzer, Loretta Wood and an infant sister, also a brother Louis Knetzer.
Mrs. Dunn was a 1939 graduate of Carlinville High School. She was a homemaker who loved to make jellies, read books and work puzzles. She was a member of St. Marks Church in Winchester, and was a member of the Alter Society at St. Marks.
Survivors include her children, Joan Beard (fiance Roger Baker) of Quincy, Marcia (husband Frank) Rice of White Hall, Sharon (husband Roland) Wallis of Winchester, Mark (wife Judy) Dunn of Quincy and Rita Dunn of Pittsfield.
11 grandchildren; Katie Strieker, Tim Beard, Krista Taylor, Mary Beth Hawkins, James Ingram, Jennifer Lindsey, Jason Ingram, Justin Ingram, Amber Dunn, Brent Dunn, and Kara Dunn, 7 great grandchildren, a sister Florence Koster of Carlinville and a brother Joe Knetzer of Gillespie.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 am Monday (July 8, 2002) at St. Marks Church in Winchester.
Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery in Carlinville.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM Sunday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, with a Prayer Service held at 5:45 PM.

Russell Eugene Durham
Russell Durham, 85, of Green field died at 12:05 P.M. on Sunday March
10, 2002 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall.
Born in Green field on Nov. 1, 1916 he was the son of the late Sylvester
and Myrtle Solomon Durham.
In Oct. 1944 he married the former Ann V. Fedor in Texas and she
preceded him in death in May of 2000.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Mrs. Steve “Beverly” Holmes of Florissant,
Mo. and Mrs. Gene “JoAnn” Kobermann of St. Louis, Mo., a son Robert
(wife-Linda) Durham of Bristol, Il., 5 grandchildren and great granchildren
also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother John Durham and 2
sisters: Eva Risher and Jessie Brown.
Mr. Durham was a veteran awarded the Purple Heart for wounds
received during his World War II service in the U.S. Army. He worked for
McDonell-Douglas (now Boeing Aircraft) for 30 years retiring in 1977 and
then farmed near Green field until recently. He was a member of the Sturart
Pierson Masonic Lodge in Carrollton and the Ansar Shrine Temple in
Springfield.
Visitation will be from Noon until 2 P.M. on Wednesday at the
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held at 2 P.M.
with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery near Green field. Memorials may
be made to the Blessing Hospice of Green e Co.
Nyle L. Dyer
Nyle L. Dyer, 49, of Carrollton died at 6:57 A.M. on Saturday at Memorial
Medical Center in Springfield.
Born in Carrollton on July 21, 1952 he was the son of the late Adrian and
Ester Burbridge Dyer.
On Aug. 27, 1977 he married the former Sharon Tatman in Hillview and
she survives. Also surviving are: 2 sons: Scott (wife Kimberly) Dyer of
Maryville, Rick (wife Michelle) Dyer of Godfrey, 5 grandchildren, 2 sisters:
Becky Upchurch of Praire Du Rocher and Adrianna Croft of Salem, Ky., and
2 brothers: Gayle Dyer of Jacksonville and Dale Dyer of Waukegan.
Mr. Dyer had worked for the Ill. Dept. of Transportation and most
recently as a counselor with the Community Counselling Center in
Jacksonville. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Monday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 1 P.M. at
Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton. Burial will follow in
Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Our Redeemer
Lutheran Church.
Mr. Michael Dean Evans
Michael Dean Evans, age 50, of Roodhouse, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 23, 2002 at his residence. He was born July 27, 1952 in Carrollton, the son of Darrell Dean and Elinora Deck Evans. He is survived by one daughter, Betty Teresa “Teri” Evans of Harrisburg, PA; his parents of Roodhouse; three brothers, Patrick Evans of Roodhouse; Robert (wife, Lynne) Evans of Carlinville and Charles (wife, Nancy) Evans of Winchester; three sisters, Nora (husband, Lyndell) Arnold of Jacksonville; Sherryl (husband, Landon) Hicks of Hays, NC and Carolyn J. Evans of Bloomington; and fourteen nieces and nephews. Mr. Evans attended Roodhouse and Alsey schools and graduated from Winchester High School in 1970. He later attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville for a time. He was a long-time employee of Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville, worked as a self-employed carpenter and contractor and was most recently employed in maintenance at Bridgestone-Firestone in Decatur. He was a member of A.B.A.T.E. and the Jacksonville Moose Lodge. He loved the outdoors, his family and friends, children and animals, gardening, and was an excellent cook and skilled mechanic. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse with burial at Fernwood Cemetery at Roodhouse. The family will meet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. R. Elizabeth "Betsy" Eyer (Mckinney)
Mrs. R. Elizabeth "Betsy" Eyer (McKenney) , 54, of Waverly passed away early Wednesday morning ,September 4, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born October 15, 1947 in Washington, D.C.. the daughter of Rosa-Hall and W. Allen McKenney, Jr. She married Stanley Eyer January 29, 2001. Mrs. Eyer worked as a secretary for the Illinois Enviromental Protection Agency. She loved people, outdoor activities, boating and her prize herb garden. Survivors include her husband Stanley Eyer at home, her mother, Rosa-Hall Randall of Frederick, MD, a son Briggs McKenney White of Sharpesburg, MD and a sister, Rev. Elsie May McKenney of New Market, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her father, a brother, W. Allen Mckenney, III and a sister, Barbara Ann Mckenney. Memorial services will be at 4pm, Sunday, September 8, 2002 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Mrs. Margaret Mary Eby (O'Reilly)
Margaret Mary Eby, 78, of Jacksonville, and formerly of White Hall, died Thursday morning, August 22, 2002 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on July 25, 1924 in Evanston, the daughter of Joseph F. and Frances A. Reiss O’Reilly. She married Clifford H. Eby on April 14, 1945 in Chicago and he preceded her in death on August 18, 1986. She is survived by two sons, James Charles Eby of Manassass, Virginia, and Robert Clifford Eby of Jacksonville; one daughter, Jean Marie Toner of Flagstaff, Arizona; one granddaughter, and two brothers, Father Joseph F. O’Reilly of Jacksonville and John H. O’Reilly of Mokena. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sheila. Mrs. Eby was a secretary for her husband’s veterinarian practice in White Hall. Prior to that she and her husband had owned and operated a dog kennel in Texas. She served as director of Meals on Wheels in White Hall for 10 years and was a member of the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2002 at the Church of Our Saviour with burial at St. John’s Cemetery at Carrollton. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. A prayer service will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Mr. Ronald Lee Edwards
Ronald Lee Edwards, 64, of Jacksonville, died Sunday morning, July 7, 2002 at his residence. He was born on May 5, 1938 in Jacksonville the son of Archie and Helen Cowgur Edwards. He married Roberta Mueller on June 14, 1960 in Bluffs and she survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Ronald Lee (wife, Joni) Edwards of Murrayville, Rick Edwards of Lafayette, Indiana, and Johnny Lee Ghandi of Riverton; one daughter, Sandra Beniach of Jacksonville; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Edwards was a fur buyer in Chapin. He had earlier been employed at Kordite. He served in the United States Marines and enjoyed hunting.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. Friends may call after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Julia Mae Edwards (Nevins)
Julia Mae Edwards, 92, of Loami, Illinois, passed away February 26, 2002 at Heritage Manor, in Springfield, Illinois. She was born in Scottville, Illinois on January 4, 1910, the daughter of Robert and Millicent Henderson Nevins.
She married Richard L. Edwards on November 9, 1935. She was a homemaker most of her life and worked atPassavant Hospital as a Central Supply Technician, in Jacksonville, Illinois from 1958 to 1959.
She is survived by 1 daughter; Joan (Jack) Miller of Girard, Illinois; 1 grandson, Steven (Martha) Miller of Palmyra, Illinois; 2 great grandsons, Michael and Eric Ficas of Palmyra, Illinois; 3 sisters, Emma Wilding of Jacksonville, Illinois, Alta Pass of Quincy, Illinois, and Nellie Thomas of Mt. Sterling, Illinois.
She was preceeded in death by her parents and husband, Richard L. Edwards on June 7, 1993. Also preceeding her in death is 1 grandson; Michael Watt, and 2 brothers; Lee Nevins and Frank Nevins.
Graveside services will be at a later date, with burial at Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly, Illinois.
Mr. William R. Edwards
William R. Edwards, 72, of Jacksonville died early Monday morning, May 13, 2002 at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. He was born March 14, 1930 in Franklin the son of John William and Flossie Seymour Edwards. He married Frances Bea Ford on July 10, 1954 at the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael (wife, Barb) Edwards of Quincy and James (wife, Yana) Edwards of Lynnville and one daughter, Susan (husband, Mike) Bettis of Winchester, five grandchildren, and one sister, Irene (husband, Harold) White of Springfield. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, three brothers, Floyd Edwards, Byron Edwards, and Newton Edwards, and one sister, Mabel Peacock.
Mr. Edwards had been employed by Kraft Foods and retired after 40 years. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict at Goose Bay, Labrador. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Edwards especially enjoyed his grandchildren and his family and loved camping and traveling.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Williamson Funeral Home after 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday with the family meeting friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the First Baptist Church on Thursday one hour prior to services. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church, Parkinson Disease Foundation or to the Kent 2 South Unit, Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
George Allen Ehlert
George Allen Ehlert, 42, of Winchester passed away Sunday night (October 13, 2002) at Passavant Area Hospital. He was born March 12, 1960 in Pittsfield the son of the late Herbert and Virginia Lee Evans Ehlert. He married Shirley Pence November 21, 1997 in Winchester. Mr. Ehlert was a 1979 graduate of Winchester High School. He worked for the Scott County Sheriffs Department as a Dispatcher and Sheriffs Deputy since 1986. He also had worked as a truck driver for Curry Trucking, Landis Trucking, and Valley Improvement. He drove a school bus for the Winchester school district. He was an avid duck hunter. He loved to cook outdoors, and for many years helped cook for the food booth at the home football games in Winchester. He also enjoyed helping with the 4H fair. George is survived by his wife Shirley at home, daughter Sarah and son Tim at home. A brother Frank (wife Dora) Ehlert of Meredosia, and a sister Lisa (husband Dale) Flynn of Winchester as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents and a niece. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Wednesday (October 16, 2002) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Arthur Eicken
Arthur L. Eicken, 82, of Carrollton died at 10:15 P.M. on Saturday April 20, 2002 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy.
Born in Camp Point, Illinois on Oct. 4, 1919 he was the son of the late Fred P. and Heipke Dirks Eicken. He married the former Gertrude Gronewold on May 9, 1943 in Golden, Illinois and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law: Mrs. Tom “Linda” Eicken-Mudaro of Wilmington, N.C., 3 sons: Duane of Brighton, Gary (wife-Pamela) of Auburn and Kenneth of Carrollton, 5 grandchildren: Paul Eicken, Beth Eicken, Anna Eicken, Dallas
Eicken and Nicholas Varble, 1 sister: Rosemary Jenkins of Loraine, Illinois. He was preceded in death by a brother Elden.
He graduated from LaPrairie High School and received his BS degree in agriculture and his ME degree in Education from the University of Illinois,and advanced certification from SIU in Edwardsville. He taught a short while before serving in the Medical Corps of the US Army in WW II for 46
months at Scott Field, Illinois.
Following service he taught Vocational Agriculture and On-the-Job Training at Augusta, Illinois from 1946-1959, and then moved to Carrollton where he taught Vocational Agriculture and Diversified Occupaitons until his
retirement in 1978. Following that, he was employed in the Department of Natural Resources for the State of Illinois in Springfield for several years.
He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as Chairman and Elder. He was a member of the Green e and Jersey Unit of the Illinois Retired Teachers Assoc. the National Education Assoc., Green e Co.
Farm Bureau, Carrollton Lions Club and the
Bowen American Legion Unit 1087.
