Mr. Glen Seator
Glen Seator, 46, of Brooklyn, New York, formerly of Jacksonville, died Saturday afternoon, December 21, 2002, form injuries suffered in an accident at his home in Brooklyn. He was born on June 5, 1956, in Beardstown, the son of Lynette and Gordon D. Seator. Hew is survived by his mother of Jacksonville; three sisters, Dr. Pamela Seator of Kansas City, Kansas, Penelope Seator of Oakland, California, and Dr. Patricia Seator (husband, Richard Skorman) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one niece and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Seator was an internationally acclaimed artist whose work extended the 20th century tradition that explored the connections between sculpture and architecture. In the early 1990s, his visionary work created a new focus in contemporary art on the use of architecture as a subject and material of sculpture. His innovative approach spanned many traditions of modern art using sculpture, architecture and photography. In BDO, a work created for the 1997 Whitney Biennial and now part of the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Mr. Seator created a three-ton replica of the museum director’s office tilted at a gravity defying 45-degree angle. Approach (1997), an installation at the Capp Street Project in San Francisco, was a colossal feat of realism that, with 250 tons of concrete, asphalt, gravel and sand, brought the street inside the gallery where it recreated full-scale in painstaking, precise detail a stretch of the street and sidewalk the gallery faced. In Three (1998), he reconstructed the façade and interior of a check cashing store located at 1561 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, that riveted the viewer’s attention on the stark contrast between the natural environment and the reproduction of the inner city check cashing store in the also starkly contrasting neighborhood of the Beverly Hills gallery. Mr. Seator’s exact physical reproductions made with transformations of architectural objects and space reveal the familiar in a fresh light. His physically and conceptually impeccable works act on the viewer to disorient, surprise and engage as they shake up awareness of our location and throw us off balance. They turn space inside-out and expose what is ordinarily unseen and off-limits. Mr. Seator’s constructions bring attention to ordinary experience and lead to an awakened awareness of the effect the conventionally constructed environment has on our inner experience; they change how we see the world. Mr. Seator exhibited major works at White Columns in new York; PS1 in Long Island City; Art in General in New York; the National gallery of Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland; Neuberger Gallery in Purchase, New York; Burnett Miller Gallery in Los Angeles; Kunsthalle Basel in Basel, Switzerland; Kunstraum Wien in Vienna, Austria; New York Kunsthalle in New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; Jay Jopling/White Cube in London, England; Capp Street Project in San Francisco; Mary Boone Gallery in New York; Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles; Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover , Massachusetts; and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. He received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Pollack Krasner Foundation, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation; Soros Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was scholar-artist in residence at the Getty Research Institute during 200-2001 and the subject of a 2002 Symposium in the Artist’s Forum series at the Getty Research Institute entitled The Work of Glenn Seator; Making Things, Moving Places. Memorial services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at the Congregational Church in Jacksonville, and in New York at a time an place to be announced.
