Mrs. Stella June Adams (Burgess)
Stella June Adams, 84, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday morning, February 12, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on March 31, 1918, in Makanda, the daughter of Charles and Mary Catherine Burgess-Adams. She married Paul Tate Adams and he preceded her in death. She is survived by four sons, Robert L. (wife, Marcelle) Adams of Jacksonville, Kenneth (wife, Jan) Adams of Chico, California, Harold (wife, Pam) Adams of Tallahasee, Florida, and Charles (wife, Barbara) Adams of Jacksonville; six daughters, Mary Rose of Ashland, Ruth (husband, Mervan) Bettis of Jacksonville, Carole (husband, Paul) Rose of Pittsfield, Susan (husband, David Bruce) Tweedy of Meredosia, Doris (husband, David) Snider of Jacksonville, and Nancy (husband, Ray) Allen of Jacksonville; 25 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by one son, John Adams; two grandsons, three brothers, Alonzo Adams, Henry Adams, and Ezra Adams; one sister, Esta Clutz; one half-brother, Ruben Burgess, and one half-sister, Jeannette Mann. Mrs. Adams was a housekeeping supervisor at the Jacksonville Developmental Center for 32 years. She attended Salem Lutheran Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and AFL-CIO. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. VFW Auxiliary rites will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or the donor’s choice.

Esthlena W. Adcock (Becker)
Esthlena W. Adcock, 82, formerly of Carrollton died at 5:50 A.M. on Monday Feb. 24, 2003 at Calhoun Care Center in Hardin. born in Kampsville on June 13, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Baugh Becker. On Feb. 7, 1945 she married Donald A. Adcock in Leesville, La. and he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1968. Surviving are: a daughter and son-in-law: Diane and John Spa of Kampsville, 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Roger and Connie Adcock of Carrollton, Steve and Lynn Adcock of Carrollton, 6 grandchildren: Amy and Donnie Adcock, Matthew Spa, Josh, Evan and Dylan Adcock, a step grandchild: Charles Booth, 2 sisters: Laray (husband Arthur) Harris of Godfrey, Berna Lee (husband Bill) Stevens of Carrollton, 5 brothers: Vern (wife Mary) Becker of Joseph, Ore., Fred Becker of Carrollton, Gary (wife Mary Lou) Becker of Godfrey, Jerry (wife Char) Becker of Dow and Richard (wife Marianne) Becker of Taylors, S.C. She was preceded in death by an infant sister. She was an active member of the Eldred Baptist Church, a member of the Eldred American Legion Aux. for 50 years. She was a longtime babysitter for many children in the Carrollton and Eldred area. She will be sadly missed. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Wed. at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 A.M. at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers and Related Disorders Research.

Mrs. Virginia Alderson (Sullivan)
Virginia Alderson, 80, of Waverly, IL died Saturday, January 11, 2003 in her home in Waverly. She was born June 29, 1922 in rural Waverly, a daughter of William Parker and Hope Zelmer Sullivan. She married Russell Irving Alderson on July 18, 1943 in the home of her parents in rural Waverly, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Deanne ()husband Ralph) Rich of Waverly, one granddaughter Jennifer Rae Rich (husband Jeremy) Moore, of Decatur, IL., one great grandson Conner Rich Moore, and one sister Wilma (husband Raymond) Ross of Waverly. She retired from the Waverly School system after 31 years as a secretary., was a former member of Waverly American Legion Auxillary, and was a member of Waverly Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 14, 2003 in Waverly Christian Church, 303 N Brooks. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Monday, January 13, 2003 at the Church. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Waverly Christian Church.

Mr. Frank "Kelly" Allen
Frank “Kelly” Allen, 92, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Green e County, died Friday morning, April 25, 2003, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center in Jacksonville. He was born September 8, 1910 in Walkerville Township, the son of Fred and Nellie Rollins Allen. He married Mabel Pence on December 1, 1935 and she preceded him in death on February 2, 1990. He is survived by one daughter, Ellen (husband, Paul) Simmons of Jacksonville; one grandson, George Allen Elliott of Jacksonville; one granddaughter, Vicky (husband, Mark) Vedder of Murrayville; one step-grandson, John Paul (wife, Patricia) Simmons of Meredosia; three great-grandsons; and two sisters, Anna Dunlap of White Hall and Doris (husband, Arthur) Cox of Roodhouse. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, one sister, Martha Patton; and six brothers, Robert Allen, Howard Allen, Lloyd Allen (surviving wife Georgia Lou of Melbourne, Florida), Morris Allen, Harry Allen, and Harvey Allen (surviving wife Anita [husband, Ross] Yoeman of Farmington). Mr. Allen farmed most of his life in Green e County. He moved to Jacksonville in 1965 and was employed by and retired from Mobil Chemical. He was a member of Sandridge Baptist Church and the Jacksonville Moose Lodge. Mr. Allen was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Pine Tree Cemetery at Patterson. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hillview Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Mr. Thomas "Tom" Anders
Thomas “Tom” Anders, age 72, of Jacksonville, Ill. and formerly of Winchester, Ill. died Sunday morning (June 1, 2003) at his residence. He was born May 18, 1931 near Winchester, Ill. son of the late Clarence Anders, Sr. and Edna Smith Anders. He married Martha Summers on December 27, 1952 in Pocahontas, Arkansas and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Hurst and husband Ron of Chapin, Ill. and Becky Williams and husband Sam of Jacksonville, Ill.; seven grandchildren, April Walters and husband Mike of Chapin, Ill., and Emily, Andrea, Erica, and Hannah Hurst all of Chapin, Ill., Aaron and Melissa Williams both of Jacksonville, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Lydia Walters both of Chapin, Ill.; two sisters, Lucille Willis of Winchester, Ill. and Kathryn Christison of Bluffs, Ill.; two brothers, Ora Lee Anders of Murryville, Ill., and Clement Anders and wife Retha of Winchester, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clarence, Jr., Kenneth, Wayne, and Bill Anders. Tom was a past employee of Illinois Rural Electric for 45 years. He is a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winchester, Ill. and a member of the Jacksonville Moose Lodge #865. He enjoyed camping and fishing. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (June 4, 2003) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, Ill. with Rev. Ted Rhoades officiating. Burial will be in Winchester City Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at the Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Mr. Francis Paul "Andy" Anderson
Francis Paul “Andy” Anderson, age 93, of Rolla, Missouri, formerly of White Hall, died Thursday evening, March 20, 2003 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Missouri. He was born March 7, 1910 in Runnells, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Robinson Anderson. He married Helen Hoehn Rogers on July 23, 1946 in Pontiac, Illinois and she survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Mary Grace (husband, Randy) Moss of Rolla, Missouri; and three grandsons, Benjamin R., Andrew P. and Jeffrey T. Moss, all of Rolla, Missouri. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Anderson and four sisters, Ann Kitchen, Grace Osterhus, Wilma McGill and Weltha Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a member of the White Hall United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Council and on various church committees. He worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Green e and Jersey Counties for over 20 years. He was a 50 year member of the White Hall Masonic Lodge #80, and was also a member of AASR and Ansar Shrine in Springfield. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in Italy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at the White Hall United Methodist Church with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall, where public Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the White Hall United Methodist Church or the White Hall Cemetery.

Archie Dale Anderson
Archie Dale Anderson, 83, of Kissimmee, Florida, formerly Palmyra area, went home to be with the Lord of Thursday, October 30, 2003 at his residence in Kissimmee. He was born April 15, 1920 in Modesto, Illinois, a son of William Archie and Melvina Emmons Anderson. He married Jean Elizabeth Davis. Surviving are his wife: two sons: Larry Anderson of Columbus, Ohio; Steve Anderson of Virden, IL; one brother Dean Anderson of Kissimmee, Fla; one sister Rita Hampton of Carlinville, IL; three grandchildren, Eric, Todd and Jennifer; two great grandchildren; Jonah and Braden; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Coy Anderson; and three sisters; Myrl Keenan; Erma Carney; and Ila Anderson He was retired from farming in Illinois, attended the Kissimmee Baptist Church and was a past member of Modesto Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, November 4, 2003 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Monday, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Blue Grass Cemetery, rural Modesto.

Mrs. Marilyn Kay Baer (Sherrill)
Marilyn Kay Baer, age 60, of Pittsfield, Ill. and formerly of Beardstown, Ill. died late Friday evening (March 14, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill.. She was born September 12, 1942 in Browning, Ill. daughter of the Walter Lewis and Ada Belville Sherrill. She married Ted Baer on August 12, 1960 in Rushville, Ill. and he survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Tina Rohn of Beardstown, Ill., Tami Coil husband Don of Omaha, Nebraska, Terri Baer of Osage Beach, Mo.; one son, Bo Baer and wife Cheri of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, John, Adam, Jared Rohn all of Beardstown, Ill., Joe, Sam, and Morgan Coil all of Omaha, Nebraska, and Emily and Allison Baer of Pittsfield, Ill.; four sisters, Shirley Callihan and husband Bill of Browning, Ill., Sue Huston of Jacksonville, Ill., Carol Jeffers and husband Gary of Beardstown, Ill., Merry Ann Sherrill of Springfield, Ill.; one brother, Richard Sherrill of Matthews, Virginia.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Barb Wolfmiller, Kay Smith and a sister in infancy. Mrs. Baer started as a nurse’s aide and later worked in central supply for the old Schmidt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown, Ill. She enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and loved to watch her grandchildren in their sporting activities. She was a member of the Pittsfield Assembly of God Church where she at one time headed the Women’s Ministry at the church. She also loved working in the nursery at the church. To Marilyn, her family always came first and this was her greatest love. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at the Pittsfield Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Quinten Beard officiating. Burial will be in Green Pond Cemetery near Pearl, Ill.. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at the Pittsfield Assembly of God Church where family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to Assembly of God Church Women’s Ministries.

Paul LeRoy Barnes
Paul Leroy Barnes, 83, of Jacksonville died Friday morning, April 25, 2003 at Prairie Village Health Care Center in Jacksonville. He was born September 27, 1919 in Charleston the son of Dr. Finis Ewing and Hattie Maude Galbreath Barnes. He married Edith Levitt on December 27, 1943 near Charleston and she survives. He is survived by one son, David Lynn (wife, Sue) Barnes of Charleston; two daughters, Ellen Sue (husband, Joe) Cors of Galt, California and Dessa Lee Barnes of Springfield; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Dean Barnes; one brother, Vernon Barnes and one sister, Vera Shafer. Mr. Barnes attended schools in Charleston and graduated from Eastern Illinois State University. He served four years in the United States Air Force during World War II, retiring as Captain. He returned to finish his education and later obtained his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois with a lifetime teaching certificate. He taught briefly in Paris, Illinois and Arthur, Illinois before coming to Jacksonville where he taught in the David Prince Junior High. He then became an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance, later returning to teaching in Green field, Virginia and Chapin where he taught Physics, Math, Geography and Science. He was also an Insurance Broker and Realtor in Jacksonville and did some solar business after retiring. He was also an apartment owner for several years. Mr. Barnes was active in Toastmasters, Jacksonville Lions Club, Jaycees and Scouts. He loved young people and helped form the first Co-ed Explorers Post in Illinois. He enjoyed cave exploring and canoeing and was considered a rock hound. He attended the Midwest Christian Center, where he enjoyed participating in musical events and playing the harmonica. He loved his own family as well as his church family and loved being with people. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the Midwest Christian Center at Northminster Church with burial at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Kickapoo Cemetery near Charleston. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday with the family to meet friends from 6-8 at Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Midwest Christian Center.

Mr. Virgil F. Barnett
Virgil F. Barnett, age 89, of White Hall, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at his residence. He was born Nov. 2, 1913 in Athensville Township, the son of William F. and Nellie Brannan Barnett. He married Lucille J. Patterson on May 30, 1936 in Jacksonville and she preceded him in death on Aug. 27, 1999. He is survived by a daughter, Sherry Lynn Schlieper of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Cindy Jo Grinkey and Lance Allen Barnett, both of Jacksonville; three great grandchildren, Corey, Aaron and Logan; and one sister, Mildred Becker of Green field. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia Ann Barnett; three brothers, Elmer, Charlie and Archie Barnett; and two sisters, Lois Talley and Edith Camp. Mr. Barnett served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945 on the ship USS Laub as a carpenters mate. He was a self employed carpenter all his life. He was a member of the American Legion and the White Hall Sportsmen’s Club, where he served as secretary for many years. He loved fishing and his grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at Union Cemetery near Green field. The family will meet friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the White Hall Sportsmans Club.

Mr. Ellsworth Barton
Ellsworth Barton, 76, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday evening, February 4, 2003, at Skyview Terrace in Jacksonville. He was born April 6, 1926, in Jacksonville, the son of Elmer and Jettie Albateen Moss Barton. He married Rose May Sparrow on October 21, 1950, and she preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Terry Lee (wife, Lillie) Barton and Larry (wife, Sherry) Barton, both of Jacksonville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Delores (husband, Melvin) Staley of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Russell, (surviving wife Frances of Jacksonville.) Mr. Barton was a truck driver for many years, driving for JSP Truck Lines, Burlington Truck Lines, and Orscelon Truck Lines. As a very young man, Mr. Barton worked at Hudson Dairy, milking cows twice a day. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Barton loved camping, bowling, poker, and spending time visiting with family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Diabetes Foundation.

Jennie Joann Bauser
Jennie Joann Bauser, 4, of Jacksonville died Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2003 at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. She was born July 17, 1998 in Springfield the daughter of Floyd “Mike” and Mary Lumpkins Bauser and they survive. She is also survived by 5 sisters, Mandi (husband, Darin) Patterson, Jessica (fiance’, Jose Vega) Bauser, Janna Bauser, Juli Bauser and Amy Bauser all of Jacksonville and her maternal grandmother, Shirley Lumpkins of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Leslie Lumpkins and paternal grandparents, Alberta Bauser and Floyd Chaney. Jennie attended the Urban League Head Start in Springfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Jacksonville East Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6-8 on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Lukemia Society.

Mr. Robert Lee Bell
Robert Lee Bell, 73, of Jacksonville, died Thursday morning, January 30, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born on November 3, 1929 in Roodhouse, and raised in the home of Stanley and Lottie Bradshaw, of Roodhouse. He married Norma J. Davenport on July 17, 1951, in Bremerton, Washington, and she preceded him in death on August 6, 1998. He is survived by one sister, Lois Crabtree of Sullivan; his cousin with whom he was raised, Pat (husband, Bob) Neff of Jacksonville; and three nephews, Donald Jones, Jack Jones, and Bill Jones. He was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Bell. Mr. Bell was a lineman with GTE for many years. He most recently worked as a groundskeeper at the Jacksonville Country Club. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1379, Amvets Post 100, American Legion Post 279, the Jacksonville Elks Club, and the Jacksonville Moose Lodge. Mr. Bell enjoyed golfing and fishing. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Woodwreath Cemetery, near New Berlin. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Elks Little League.

Mr. Tommy M. Bentley
Tommy M. Bentley, 73, of Chapin, died Wednesday evening, May 21, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born August 29, 1929, in Mexico, Missouri, the son of Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Mae Wilcox Bentley. He married Lois Ann Hymes on July 17, 1955, in Chapin, and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Mike (wife, Janet) Bentley of Virginia; one daughter, Barbara (husband, Jeff) Heckenberger of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and one grandson, Adam Bentley of Virginia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and James; and one sister, Mary Bibb. Mr. Bentley was a machinist with Chapin Cylinder Head for over 40 years. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, with Underwater Demolition Team #13. He was a member of Chapin American Legion Post #878. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Chapin Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Chapin American Legion Post #878.

Mr. Gerald D. Bilger
Gerald D. Bilger, 59, of Jacksonville, died Thursday evening, May 1, 2003, at his residence. He was born April 27, 1944, in Alton, the son of Kenneth Dale and Ruby Edwards Bilger. He married Judith A. Britenstine on June 16, 1963 in Franklin and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Kenneth (wife, Joy) Bilger of Champaign and Gregory (companion, Staci Blake) Bilger of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Corey Leigh Bilger and Nicole Marie Bilger, both of Champaign, and Braden Dale Bilger of Jacksonville; and one brother, James (wife, Sue) Bilger of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Bilger was a millwright at Pactiv in Jacksonville for 35 years, retiring in April of 2001. He was an avid automobile race fan and worked with his son’s racing crew. He enjoyed reading and fishing, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Mrs. Beulah Rae Bishop (Summers)
Beulah Rae Bishop, age 77, of the Scott County Nursing Center in Winchester, Ill. died 3:15 a.m. Thursday (June 5, 2003) at the nursing center. She was born September 8, 1925 near Winchester, Ill. daughter of the late Ray and Rowena Evans Summers. Surviving is one daughter, Connie Lovelace and husband Roger of Exeter, Ill.; one son, Steven Bishop and wife Barb of White Hall, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jeff Gansz and wife Shelly of Alsey, Ill., Jennifer Miller and husband Alan of Jacksonville, Ill., Michael Bishop of Springfield, Ill., John Bishop of White Hall, Ill., and Stacey Varble and husband Randy of Patterson, Ill.; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Martha Anders of Jacksonville, Ill., Mary Rousey and husband Bob of Winchester, Ill., and Janet Garrett of Bluffs, Ill.; one brother, Larry Summers and wife Carolyn of Jacksonville, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Emma Louise Dean and Dorothy McKinnon; one brother, Lloyd Summers. Mrs. Bishop worked for the old Beef and Bird Restaurant in the Dunlap Hotel in Jacksonville, Ill. as well as the Jacksonville Country Club. She attended the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winchester, Ill. She was very fond of being with family and taking care of her daughter’s dogs Frisco and Mandy. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (June 7, 2003) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, Ill. with Rev. Dean Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Winchester City Cemetery. Edward Wayne Brewer IV
Edward Wayne Brewer, IV, died Monday evening, April 21, 2003, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born earlier that day at St. John’s, the son of Edward Wayne Brewer, III and Rene Settles Brewer. He is survived by a twin sister, Christina Lynn Brewer; a sister, Breanna Nicole Brewer; paternal grandmother, Sandra (fiancé, Larry Barker) Brewer of New Berlin; paternal grandfather Edward Wayne Brewer, Jr. of Jacksonville; maternal grandmother Nancy (companion Rick Jones) Settles of Jacksonville; and paternal great-grandfather, Edward Wayne Brewer, Sr. of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Eddie Joe Settles. Private services will be held. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. M. Rhea Bristow (Bettis)
M. Rhea Bristow, 91, of Palmyra, died Thursday, January 2, 2003 in Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL. She was born March 1, 1911 in Macoupin County, near Modesto, IL, a daughter of George Washington, and Dora Frances Shores Bettis. She married Clarence “Buster” Bristow on February 26, 1930 in Springfield, IL and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1994. Surviving are: one son; Raymond (wife Donna) Bristow of Palmyra; two daughters: Thelma (husband Bill) White of Palmyra, Pauline King (husband Paul) Jones of Carlinville, IL. eight grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers: Clarence, Otto, Orville, Carl, Melvin, Fred, Welcome Bettis; and brother, Oren Bettis in infancy; five sisters: Annie Hartsook, Ora Pierson, Rae Crawford, and Gracie Edminston, and one sister, Mary Bettis in infancy. She was a member of Trailblazers Camping Club, and Pleasantdale Southern Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, January 6, 2003, in Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, IL. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, January 5, 2003, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Girard City Cemetery, Girard, IL. Memorials are suggested to Northwestern Rescue Squad.

Mr. Donald L. "Boogie" Brown
Donald L. “Boogie” Brown, age 70, of Maysville, Ill. died Tuesday morning (March 4, 2003) at his residence. He was born April 16, 1932 in Griggsville, Ill. son of the late Henry W. and Bertha B. Butterfield Brown. He married Margaret Louise Edwards on August 4, 1956 in Manteno, Ill. Surviving is one daughter, Teresa L. Hammitt of Pittsfield, Ill.; two sons, Roger Brown and wife Lea Anne of Buffalo, Ill. and David Brown and wife Kristin of Griggsville, Ill.; a friend and companion, Donna Lister of Maysville, Ill.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Brown of Griggsville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Charles Brown in infancy, Carl Brown, Bob Brown and Shirley Brown; and a sister, Eva Nighswonger. Mr. Brown was a 1950 graduate of Griggsville High School and a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a past employee of Ocsar Mayer in Beardstown, Ill., and recently drove a school bus for Griggsville School District for eight years. He was a past member of the Griggsville American Legion Post #213. He loved to go camping, watching his grandchildren in sports, shooting pool, and socializing at the local coffee house with his many friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (March 8, 2003) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Griggsville American Legion Post #213. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Pike County.

Mr. Charlie Eugene Brown
Charles “Charlie” Eugene Brown, 58, of Wayne, West Virginia, formerly of Waverly, Illinois, passed away Monday , May 19, 2003 at Huntington Veterans Medical Center in Huntington, WV. He was born September 2, 1944 in Waverly, Illinois, the son of Charles August and Marjorie Charles Crank Brown. He was married to Barbara Hudson. Charlie worked as an excavator all his life up until the time of his illness. He was a member of the Waverly Christian Church. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army. He is survived by; 1 daughter, Kirissa Sue Ann Krantz ; 2 grandchildren; Vanessa and Victoria Krantz, 1 brother, Jim (Judy) Brown of Waverly, Illinois; 5 sisters; Donna (Glen) Shearburn of Waverly, Illinois, Shirley (Bill) Bettis of Girard, Illinois, Marilyn Kiers of Waverly, Illinois; Nancy Eby of Waverly, Illinois; Patty (Rodney) Cremmens of McAlester, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by I brother; John Keith Brown; 2 sisters; Evelyn May White and Kathy Lou Brown. Funeral services will be at 10am, Friday, May 23, 2003 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Family will meet friends from 4pm to 8pm, Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Rev. Harry L. Brown
Rev. Harry L. Brown, 72, of Jacksonville and formerly of Meredosia, died Saturday evening, April 5, 2003, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center. He was born August 1, 1931, in Meredosia, the son of James Clarence and Eleana Bollyard Brown. He married Doris Lamb on April 21, 1957 in Hagerstown, Indiana, and she survives. He is also survived by four sons, David (wife, Sheila) Brown of Springfield, Daniel (wife, Cynthia) Brown of Marshall, Texas, Timothy Brown and James (wife, Beverly) Brown, both of Jacksonville; one daughter, Deborah (husband, Don) Ivy of Aurora, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Nicole, Phillip, Jacob, Julia, Joshua, and Adam Brown; and one sister, Barbara (husband, William “Bud”) Taylor of Meredosia. Rev. Brown retired on October 1, 1995, from National Starch at Meredosia, where he had been employed for over 40 years, the last 20 as a waste treatment plant operator. He was a founding member and chief of the Meredosia Fire Department and president of the Rescue Squad, and taught Emergency Medical Technician Classes. He was a bi-vocational pastor and preached in several area churches, and on Rushville radio. He served with the United States Marines Corp during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Meredosia Rescue Squad.

Mrs. Helen Ailena Burger (Ryan)
Helen Ailena Burger, age 94, of White Hall, died Saturday morning, May 24, 2003 at the White Hall Multicare Center. She was born April 18, 1909 near Medora, the daughter of George and Lena Morris Ryan. She married Lloyd D. Burger on Sept. 22, 1926 in Jerseyville and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1993. She is survived by one daughter, Bernice (husband, Darrel) Kesinger of Waverly; two sons, Roland Dwight (wife, Margie) Burger of Wayne City and Willard G. Burger of Gassville, Arkansas; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Burger (surviving wife, Esther of Carrollton);one grandson, three brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Burger was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2003 at the Carrollton City Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Mr. William "Bill" Burlend
William “Bill” Burlend, age 81, of the North Adams Home in Mendon, Ill. and formerly of Griggsville, Ill. died Monday afternoon (March 31, 2003) at the North Adams Home. He was born August 7, 1921 in Griggsville, Ill. son of the late William Warren and Ruth McLaughlin Burlend, Sr. He married Patricia Harshman on December 30, 1941 in Griggsville, Ill. and she preceded him in death on June 26, 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Anne “Shan” Pennell of Colombia, Mo. and Peggy Jean Hart and husband Gene of Loda, Ill.; one son, Butch Burlend and wife Cheryl of Quincy, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Eric Hart and wife Jennifer of Enid, Oklahoma, Braidy Hart of Chicago, Ill., Jayna Hart of Carterville, Ill., Jamie Dionne Gwin of Colombia, Mo., Jason Christopher Pennell and wife Tammy of Springfield, Ill., Corey Burlend of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stacie Spradlin and husband Henry of Dayton, Ohio; eight great-grandchildren, Annaliese and Meredith Spradlin of Dayton, Ohio, K.C., Matthew, and Austin Gwin of Colombia, Mo., and Alex, Zachary, and Zeke Pennell all of Springfield, Ill.; one brother, Melvin Vincent “Babe” Burlend of Griggsville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a grandson, Joel Pennell. Mr. Burlend was a 1939 graduate of Griggsville High School. He farmed south of Griggsville for many years before becoming a salesman for Peter’s Chevrolet, and later for Zimmerman Bro’s Pontiac-GMC retiring in the early 1990’s. Following his retirement, he and his wife Pat owned and managed the Purple Martin Inn Restaurant in Griggsville, Ill. until 1998. Bill loved sports and loved to golf and enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the Griggsville Nazarene Church and was a past member and president of the Pittsfield Lions Club and was a past member of the Old Orchard Country Club in Pittsfield, Ill. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday (April 3, 2003) at the Griggsville Church of the Nazarene in Griggsville, Ill. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Griggsville, Ill. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p. m. Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. Memorials may be made to the Griggsville Estates Boarding Home or to the Griggsville Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Anne Louise Caldwell (Grover)
Anne Louise Grover Caldwell, 79, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday evening, January 29, 2003, at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville. She was born February 22, 1923, in Ottawa, the daughter of George and Vira Anderson Caldwell. She married Donald Lee Caldwell, and they were married 38 years. He preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Thomas Lee Caldwell (wife, Julie) of Jacksonville; two daughters, Suzanne Louise Caldwell-Jacques (husband, Chris) of Jacksonville and Dr. Barbara Anne Caldwell of Ames, Iowa; six grandchildren, Dustyn Caldwell of Chicago, Dessa Kopp of St. Louis, Missouri; Gabriel and Megan Caldwell, and Christopher and Amanda Caldwell-Jacques, all of Jacksonville; one brother, George Grover of Mahopac, New York. Her infant son, George Harlan, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Caldwell graduated in 1945 from the University of Illinois, where she majored in Economics. She was president of her sorority, Phi Theta Kappa, at the University of Illinois and enjoyed ongoing friendships established there. She also studied History and English and had a lifelong interest in interior design and fine art. She was an ongoing member of the Art Institute of Chicago and worked after graduation at the Harris Trust Bank of Chicago for two years before marrying and moving to Jacksonville. She facilitated the interior decoration of her historic home of twenty-five years, 1135 West State, which was built in 1892. This house is now being preserved and further restored by her daughter and son-in-law. Anne was a loving mother and friend, gracious hostess to large and small gatherings in her home, and a devoted and supportive wife. She was a member of the Monday Conversation Club, P.E.O, Chapter CY; Pilot Club, Morgan County Garden Club, and a lifetime member of the Art Association. She attended the Congregational Church with her husband, as well as Grace United Methodist Church. Her caring humanitarian spirit, uplifting sense of humor and gentleness enriched the lives of all who knew her personally, socially, or professionally. Her loving nurturance, generosity, strength, quick intelligence, quiet dignity, and beauty will continue to inspire all who love her. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s charity of choice.

Mrs. Betty Caron (Cook)
Betty Caron, age 79, of the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mt. Sterling, Ill. and formerly of Springfield, Mo. died 7:52 p.m. Friday (January 3, 2003) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. She was born October 17, 1923 in Nebo, Ill. daughter of the late Sylvester M. and Ella B. Stephenson Cook. Surviving is one son, Tim Caron of Versailles, Ill.; two grandchildren, Dallas Caron and Rex Caron both of Versailles, Ill.; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Caron was a bookkeeper for Goodyear Tire in Springfield, Mo. for many years. She was a member of Switzer United Methodist Church in Springfield, Mo. She enjoyed her grandsons. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday (January 7, 2003) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. David Shultz officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery in Griggsville, Ill. Friends may call one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home. Hettie Leah Carriger
Hettie Leah Carriger, 70, of Winchester passed away Tuesday morning (May 27, 2003) at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville. She was born August 15, 1932 in Scott County the daughter of the late Darwin S. and Madaline J. Blair Carriger. She attended various country schools in Scott and Green e Counties. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1950. She received her accounting degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She worked for various Accounting firms in the St. Louis area until she established her own tax and accounting office in Woodson Terrace in 1992. She retired in October of 1997 returning to Winchester to be near her family and friends. Hettie was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church. She enjoyed the companionship of her family, participating in sports and yard work. She is survived by her 2 sisters Helen (Wilbur) Coats of Winchester, Sheryl Brooks of St. Peters, Missouri, 8 brothers Harley (Betty) Carriger of Burlington, West Virginia, Herschel (Norma) Carriger of Chapin, Harold (Joann) Carriger of Jacksonville, Hal (Kathy) Carriger of Sanford, North Carolina, Henry (Linda) Carriger of Bellevue, Nebraska, Jack (Vicki) Carriger of Augusta, Howard (Karen) Carriger of Pittsfield, and Herbert (Sheri) Carriger of Winchester. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday (May 30, 2003) at the Glasgow Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Glasgow Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Thursday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Elmer Ray Carter
Elmer Ray Carter, 78, of Carrollton died at 1:10 P.M. on Tuesday Jan. 21, 2002 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. born in Green e Co. on Oct. 18, 1924 he was the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Willis Carter. On Feb. 10, 1943 he married the former Maxine Shull in St. Charles, Mo. and she survives. Also surviving are: a daughter Patricia Carter of Jacksonville, 3 sons and daughter-in-laws: David and Jiang P. Carter of Godfrey, Louis and Vicki Carter of Godfrey, Dennis and Barb Carter of Green field, 4 grandchildren: Joseph Carter of Henderson, Nev., Catherine, Elizabeth and Steven Carter of Green field, 2 sisters: Verda Ford of Woodriver and Opal Hildebrandt of Carlinville. He was preceded in death by a son Gary Carter and 3 brothers: Harry, Art and Donald Carter. Mr. Carter worked for over 30 years as a Soil Conservation Technician for the USDA retiring in 1988. He was member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church and the Jerseyville Moose Lodge. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Thursday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton with services at the funeral home on Friday at 11 A.M. with burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
