Mrs. Lucille Winans Chandler
On Monday, February 17, 2003, another star joined the heavens. At Passavant Area Hospital, Lucille Winans Chandler peacefully departed from a long and fruitful earthly life. Mrs. Chandler was born on September 26, 1914 in Pittsfield. She was the eldest daughter of Charles and Flora Wackerman Winans. On August 17, 1941, she was blessed to marry Julian Taylor Chandler. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1997. A brother, Lyle Winans, a sister, Helen Winans Zimmerman, and an infant granddaughter also preceded her in death. A daughter, Linda (husband, Gary) Donovan, and a granddaughter, Amy Donovan, the love of her life; as well as nieces and nephews continue the legacy of her life. Mrs. Chandler had a lifelong love of music. She enjoyed playing the organ for family and friends and lifting her voice to the Lord. One of her most memorable experiences was singing “I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked” on a trip to the Holy Lands. After moving to Jacksonville, Mrs. Chandler spent many years working in retail fashion and this became a source of great pleasure in her life. Mrs. Chandler retired from JC Penney’s as a manager of lady’s fashion. While working in fashion, she also found time to sew, quilt, and crochet. Her free time was rarely spent without a quilting or afghan project spread on her lap. She also loved to travel and, after retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Chandler found time to visit dozens of countries. Mrs. Chandler was a longtime member of Central Christian Church in Jacksonville. She sang in the choir, accompanied the children’s choir, and served as the church visitor. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Central Christian Church.
Raymond Cherry
Raymond Cherry Jr., 79, of Winchester passed away early Monday morning (April 7,2003) at his home surrounded by his family. He was born December 29, 1923 near Sikeston, Missouri the son of the late Raymond and Etta Piercy Cherry. He married Demetra Lorraine Beach April 28, 1944 in Jerseyville. Mr. Cherry was a 1941 graduate of Jerseyville High School. He attended University of Chicago, University of Illinois and the University of Denver. Mr. Cherry was in the 448 Squadron of the 321st Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing 12th Air Force stationed in Sollenzarro, Corsica during World War II. He received the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. He owned and operated the Alsey Elevator and Winchester Grain Elevator for many years. He was a farmer, a grain dealer and was involved in real estate sales and appraisals. He served as an Alderman and member of the school board in Winchester. He was a member of the 1st Christian church in Winchester where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was also a member of the American Farm Managers and Appraisers, the Masonic Lodge and the Ansar Shrine, the American Legion, VFW, Eagles and Elks. He was very active in many community projects in Winchester including building the public swimming pool and ball diamonds. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Patsy Smoot. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Demetra Cherry at home. 3 children; David R. (wife Jo Ellen) Cherry, Michael A. (wife Cindy) Cherry both of Winchester, Barbara L. (husband Allen) Large of Lawrenceville, IL; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Cherry, Jennifer Cherry Sellars (husband Andrew), Melissa Cherry Nadler (husband John) Allen W. Large II (wife Johanna) and Amy L. Large; 3 great grandchildren, Noah Sellars, Oliver Wayne Large and Lauren Leigh Sellars. Also surviving are 4 sisters, Glenda Early, Margaret Hampton, Pansy Pruitt, and Linda Simms; 2 brothers Charles Lane and Wallace Cherry Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday (April 10, 2003) at the 1st Christian Church in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery were military rites will be conducted. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Wednesday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Mr. John Clark
John Clark, 77, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday morning, May 20, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born April 18, 1926, in Liverpool, Illinois, the son of David and Revena Clark. He is survived by one brother, Emmett (wife Lillian) Clark of Topeka, Illinois. He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Clark; and one sister Martha Clark. Funeral services will be held at 10a.m. Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be held later at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Lewistown. Memorials are suggested to the donors’ choice.

Lois A. Clayton, 51, of Jacksonville died Wednesday evening, March 5, 2003 at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield. She was born September 12, 1951 in Jacksonville the daughter of William Edward and Lula Mae Cox Hamm. She is survived by one son, Jim Clayton of Dawson; one daughter, Rebecca (husband, Torrey) Bourn of Jacksonville; 4 brothers, Charlie Hamm of Jacksonville, Frank (wife, Sandy) Hamm of Jacksonville, Bill (wife, Sharon) Hamm and Virgle (wife, Karen) Hamm both of Joplin, Missouri; 4 sisters, Barb Hamm, Doris Gaines and Cathern Antle all of Jacksonville and Tina (husband, Gene) Dunn of Nilwood. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Hamm, Dale Hamm and John Hamm and one sister, Betty VanHyning. Mrs. Clayton was a homemaker and member of Literberry Christian Church. She enjoyed visiting with family, cooking and listening to music. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Concord Cemetery. Mrs. Elsie M. Clostermery (Bradshaw)
Elsie M. Clostermery, age 78, of the Pittsfield HealthCare Center in Pittsfield, Ill. and formerly of Griggsville, Ill. died 9:09 a.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) at the HealthCare Center. She was born September 22, 1924 in Griggsville, Ill. daughter of the late George Samuel and Gladys Bradshaw. She married Robert Lee Clostermery on November 18, 1945 in Griggsville, Ill. and he preceded her in death in 1946. Surviving is one son, Alphie Clostermery and wife Nancy of Griggsville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Robert Clostermery and wife Tresa, Rena McAdams and husband Eric, and Donald Clostermery and wife Marcie all of Griggsville, Ill., and Pam Embree and husband Danny of rural Pittsfield, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren, Michael Clostermery and Bradley Surratt of Griggsville, Ill., and Benjamin Baughman, Andrew Baughman, and Nathan Embree all of rural Pittsfield, Ill., Jacob Clostermery, and Samantha, Daniel, and Dakota Clostermery all of Griggsville, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two great-grandchildren, Samuel Robert and Melissa Ann Clostermery; a sister, Margaret Lacey; and a nephew Kenneth Lacey. Mrs. Clostermery was a past employee of the Brown Shoe Co. in Pittsfield, Ill., as well as Western Cartridge in Alton, Ill., Kordite Plastics in Jacksonville, Ill., and Trio Manufacturing in Griggsville, Ill. She loved to cook and cooked at several restaurants including, J’s Café, and the Griggsville Café in Griggsville, Ill., Cardinal Inn, Hill Top Café, and recently for the Pittsfield HealthCare Center retiring in the 1970’s. She was a member of the Griggsville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday (March 26, 2003) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. Mrs. Alma Estaleen "Esther" Coffman (Walls)
Alma Estaleen “Esther”Coffman, 82, of Springfield and formerly of Roodhouse died Wednesday morning, January 15, 2003 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was born on February 28, 1920 in Wrights, the daughter of Roy and Lula Rhoades Walls. She married Emery Franklin “Tom” Coffman on October 4, 1946 at Roodhouse and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1992. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Coffman and Susie (husband, Richard) Schrader both of Springfield; one step son, Gene (wife, Floy) Coffman of Roodhouse; two grandchildren and several great grandchildren; three step sisters, Delois Frye, Connie Anderson, and Nora Hoots all of Jacksonville; and two step brothers, John Walls of Jacksonville and Ronnie Walls of Carrollton. She was preceded in death by one step grandson, Kendall Coffman; two brothers, Ward Walls and one in infancy; one sister, Naomi Benton; three step sisters, Ruth Scott, Gayle McClanahan and Dorothy Rutherford and one step brother, Bill Walls. Mrs. Coffman worked as a cook in several restaurants in Jacksonville and Roodhouse. She later worked as a nurses aid at Brokaw Hospital in Bloomington. She attended World Harvest Church in Springfield. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse with burial in Fernwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. on Saturday until the time of services. Memorials are suggested to World Harvest Church.
Mrs. Esther M. Cook (Ator)
Esther M. Cook, age 83, of Griggsville, Ill. died late Sunday evening (February 9, 2003) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Il. She was born May 15, 1919 in Griggsville, Ill. daughter of the late O.W. and Rose Lyman Ator. She married Charles W. Cook on May 4, 1947 in Kansas City, Kansas and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1998. Surviving is one sister, Rosalie Robinson of Griggsville, Ill.; one brother, O.W. “Skeet” Ator, Jr. of Griggsville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Abbie Judah and Mary E. Robinson; three brothers, Alonzo Ator, William Ator, and LeRoy Ator. Esther worked in the old Hob Nob Restaurant in Pittsfield, Ill., as well as P.N. Hirsch Store, John Green e Store, Pittsfield Farm and Home and Spurgeon’s Clothing Store all in Pittsfield, Ill.. She was also a co-owner with her sister Rosalie in the J’s Café in Griggsville, Ill. for several years. She loved flowers and animals and loved spending time with her great-great-nephew Matthew James Robinson. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with burial in Baylis Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Skinner House or to the Baylis Cemetery.
Mr. Jay S. Cooper
Jay S. Cooper, 81, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and formerly of the Chapin and Concord area, died Wednesday evening, April 2, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. He was born July 20, 1921, near Concord, the son of Jay R. and Florence Smith Cooper. He married Alma Spagnolo on May 3, 1947 in Chicago, and she preceded him in death on May 12, 1987. He married Ruth Sauer in 1990 and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Bruce (wife, Cammie) Cooper of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Judy (husband, Ray) Andrews of Cape Coral, Florida; three granddaughters, Joyce, Janice, and Julie Andrews; two great-grandchildren, and one sister, Coralee Macy of Chicago. Mr. Cooper retired from Ford Motor Company after over 30 years of employment. He was an active member of the United Auto Workers Union. Mr. Cooper served in the United States Army during World War II, and was recognized by the Associated Press as being the first person to send a telegram from England to the United States at the conclusion of the war. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends following the service. Private graveside services will be held at Concord Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Mr. James Otis Corrigan
James Otis Corrigan, age 65, of rural Baylis, Ill. died Friday afternoon (February 14, 2003) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.. He was born July 15, 1937 in Quincy, Ill. son of the late Otis Daniel and Sadie Ellen Corrigan. He married Velma J. Braungardt on March 17, 1989 in Montgomery City, Mo. and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mike Corrigan of Quincy, Ill. and Jeff Corrigan and wife Jodi of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Susan LaCount and husband Harry of Tega Cay, South Carolina; and Laura Corrigan of Quincy, Ill.; one step-son, Mike Braungardt and wife Jill of Pittsfield, Ill.; one step-daughter, Pam Gordy of Centralia, Mo.; three brothers, Bob Corrigan and wife Brenda of Loraine, Ill., Carl Corrigan and wife Bonnie of LaGrange, Mo., and Dale Corrigan and wife Jan of Quincy, Ill.; one sister, LuAnn Young and husband Bob of Quincy, Ill.; six grandchildren, Bobby and Mikey Corrigan of Maroa, Ill., Samantha Corrigan of Houston, Texas, Steven and James Stapp and Ashley Marquardt all of Quincy, Ill.; four step-grandchildren, Tara Howland of Milton, Ill., Marlena Braungardt of Barry, Ill., Nathan Braungardt of Pittsfield, Ill. and Dana Gordy of Centralia, Mo.; one step-great-grandchild, Korbyn Personett of Barry, Ill.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, George Coulson; and a grandson, Cory Lavon Hoaglin. Jim served in the U.S. Army Reserves for eight years. He was a retired carpenter and concrete contractor. Jim lived near Fishhook where he was a grain and livestock farmer. He was an “outdoors person” and loved to deer hunt and mushroom. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (February 18, 2003) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. Vale Walkington officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery near Fishhhook, Ill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Woodland Church or to the Woodland Cemetery.
Mr. Dean Corsa
Dean Corsa, age 80, of East Alton, formerly of White Hall, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2003 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born June 17, 1922, in White Hall, the son of Mr. Dean and Hazel Raper Corsa of White Hall. He married Leopoldine Westermayer on Sept. 27, 1946 in Vienna, Austria and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Deana Corsa (husband, Donald) Humphrey of Sonora, California and Hazel Corsa (husband, Mark) Jensen of Manchester, Missouri; two sons, Dennis (wife, Pat) Corsa of Alton and John Stuart Corsa of Rockford; six grandchildren, Teresa Corsa (husband, Joe) Hernandez; Bradley Corsa; Angela Corsa; Dean Corsa; Ryan Jensen and Jonathan Jensen; and two sisters, Nancy Corsa Noah of Darnestown, Maryland and Lucy Jane Corsa Bridgewater of White Hall. He was preceded in death by one son, Dean Corsa, III and two sisters, Sally Corsa Snyder and Hazel Corsa Green e. He attended Kemper Military School, graduating as First Lieutenant. He served his country in the U.S. Army, including European action during World War II. Mr. Corsa received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He devoted thirty-four years to his craft of heating and air conditioning, serving as Vice-president of Kane Plumbing and Heating for twenty-three of those years. We are especially proud of his involvement and accomplishments with ASHRAE (heating and air-conditioning engineers), Illinois Pilots Association, Lion’s Club, VFW and the American Legion. His family, relatives and friends cherish the time spent with him; he will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. Mr. Charles M. Costa
Charles M. Costa, 82, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday morning, May 6, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born April 14, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Louis and Margaret Yore Costa. He married Bernice Shanahan and she preceded him in death in June of 1984. He later married Liliana Rojas Kalanik in July of 1985 at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville and she survives. He is also survived by four sons, Mike (wife, Annie) Costa of Syracuse, New York, John (wife, Kathy) Costa of San Diego, California, Lou (wife, Sharon) Costa of Mt. Vernon, and Mark (wife, Kathleen) Costa of Murphysboro; three daughters, Catherine Schaberg of Stamford, Connecticut, and Ellen (husband, David) Hardy and Patricia (husband, Chuck) Normanly, both of Syracuse, New York; one step-daughter, Karen (husband, Scott) Tenant of Syracuse, New York; two step-sons, John (wife, Lynn) Kalanik of Chicago and David (wife, Caitlin) Kalanik of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; 20 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers, John (wife, Teddy) Costa of Reinbeck, New York and Pat (wife, Doris) Costa of Battle Creek, Michigan; and three sisters, Judy (husband, John) Rau of Portland, Washington, Cathy (husband, Peter) Boylan of Milledgeville, Georgia, and Peggy Brown of Battle Creek, Michigan. Mr. Costa was plant manager at Bohn Aluminum and Brass in Beardstown until his retirement in the 1980’s. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour, Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, and had served on the Board of Directors of the Prairie Council on Aging. During the past several years, Mr. Costa has volunteered at the local prison, working with the Hispanic population. He enjoyed attending “Coffee Club” at the Elks. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2003, at the Church of Our Saviour. The family will meet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 6:45 p.m. Graveside services will be held Sunday at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery in Lexington Michigan. Memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Area Center for Independent Living.
Mrs. Ann Louise Crabtree (Hawks)
Ann Louise Hawks Crabtree, 50, of Godfrey, and formerly of Jacksonville; died Wednesday afternoon, February 5, 2003, at her residence. She was born on October 1, 1952, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Robert F. and Margaret Gause Hawks. She married Paul Edward Crabtree on October 1, 1999, and he survives. Mrs. Crabtree is also survived by one brother, Bob Hawks of Jacksonville, and one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Crabtree was employed at Olin Brass in East Alton. She enjoyed decorating her home and working in her garden and yard. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2003, at Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson. The family will meet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Alice Mae Craddock, 66, of Jacksonville, died Thursday morning, May 1, 2003, at Prairie Village Healthcare in Jacksonville. She was born January 15, 1937 in Jacksonville, the daughter of Allen and Gertrude Wilson Fairfield. She married Edward Craddock on December 10, 1965 and he preceded her in death on September 17, 1983. She is survived by one son, Edward (companion Lori Miller) Craddock of Quincy; three daughters, Barbara (husband, David) Sculley of Springfield, Kathryn (husband, Tim) Durkin, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Judy (husband, Dary) Surratt of Meredosia; seven grandchildren, Karen (husband, Steve) Sculley Michael of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Daniel Quinones, Jessica Durkin, and Heather Durkin, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Amanda (husband, Mark) Trent Hollard of Jacksonville; Claude Lomelino of Chapin, and Brent Surratt of Meredosia; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin (companion, Marie) Fairfield of Lakeland, Florida and James (wife, June) Fairfield of Jacksonville; and three sisters, Donna (husband, David) McIntyre of Washington, and Mary Jackson and Norma Fortado, both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Sue Trent. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2003, at Asbury Cemetery, southeast of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until noon on Monday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Dorothy Custer, 88 ,of Carrollton died on Thursday afternoon Jan. 9, 2003 at the White Hall Multicare Center in White Hall. born in on June 15, 1914 in Carrollton, she was the daughter of the late John and Pearl Black Adcock. On April 2, 1928 she married Wayne Custer in Carrollton and he preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1985. Donald “Big Don Murph” Dallas, age 76, of Pittsfield, Ill. died 4:15 p.m. Friday (May 30, 2003) at his residence. He was born December 16, 1926 in Hillsboro, Ill. son of the late Peter and Pearl Marie Murphy Dallas. Following the death of his parents, he was raised by his grandparents, Thomas and Mary Jane Murphy. He married Anna Fern Dobey on December 26, 1961 in Springfield, Ill. and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Opal Rennecker of Kansas City, Mo. and Dawn Manson and husband Gail of Griggsville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Richard Rennecker, Jr. of Eolia, Mo., Adam, Anna, Kristen, Caroline, Kyle and Jacob Rennecker of Troy, Mo. and Kenny and Jonathon Manson of Griggsville, Ill.; a son-in-law, Richard Rennecker of Troy, Mo.; two sisters, Juanita Sutton and Eva Mae Casey of San Angelo, Texas; one brother, Wayne Casey of Lewiston, Maine; two aunts, Ruby Murphy of Taylorville, Ill. and Josephine Murphy of Bluffs, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a brother, Russell Bradshaw. Mr. Dallas drove semi trucks his whole life working for various local firms. He was always there to help anyone who needed help and never knew a stranger. Don’s greatest love was for his family and he loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday (June 3, 2003) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Pastor Ken Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
Mrs. Mildred Irene Daniels (Dickerman)
Mildred Irene Daniels, age 91, of Rock Island, Ill. and formerly of Griggsville, Ill. died Tuesday morning (February 4, 2003) at Trinity Medical Center West in Rock Island, Ill. She was born November 10, 1911 in Byerton, Ill. daughter of the late Tony and Flossie May Lakin Dickerman. She married Charles Truman Daniels on May 16, 1934 in Pittsfield, Ill. and he preceded her in death on September 14, 1977. Surviving is one son, Charles E. Daniels and wife Sharon of Rock Island, Ill.; two grandchildren, Karma Cook of Rock Island, Ill. and Jonathan Daniels and wife Amy of Davenport Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Amanda, Natalie, Kristine, Kathrine Cook all of Rock Island and Matthew and Mara Daniels both of Davenport, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Mrs. Daniels was a past employee of the Cardinal Inn Restaurant in Pittsfield, Ill. where she worked as a waitress. She also was a past employee of the Griggsville Community Unit School District where she worked for 27 years as a cook. Following her retirement, she volunteered for the Pike County Senior Citizens delivering meals. She loved knitting, crocheting and birds. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (February 8, 2002) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. Burial will be in Gray Cemetery near New Salem, Ill. Visitation will be held Thursday (February 6, 2003) from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Van Hoe Funeral Home in Moline, Ill. and Friday (February 7, 2003) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill.
Barbara Ann Daum (Baltz)
Barbara Ann Daum, 73, of Carrollton died at 11:15 A.M. on Friday Feb. 7, 2003 at her residence following a lengthy illness. born in Carrollton on Sept. 22, 1929 she was the daughter of the late George W. and Ruth Mason Baltz. On August 8, 1950 she married Phil Daum in Carrollton and he preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1992. Surviving are 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Andy and Karen Daum of Rockbridge, Chris and Kathy Daum of Mason City and Karl and Colleen Daum of Jacksonville, 8 grandchildren: Ann & Mary Daum, Julie & Jennifer Daum, Nikki Becker, Kim LaBonte, Kristin Becker, Joe Becker, 2 great grandchildren. A brother and sister-in-law: Herschel and Mary Lois Hackley of LaPlace, La. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Mrs. Daum was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Green e Co. Historical Society, the Carrollton Library Board and the DK Chapter of the PEO. She was an elegant lady who will be sadly missed. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Mrs. Mildred R. Davis (Archibald)
Mildred R. Davis, 79, of Jacksonville, died Thursday morning, May 15, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born May 20, 1923, in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph S. and Ruth E. Lyon Archibald. She married Charles M. “Maury” Davis on July 17, 1946 and he preceded her in death on October 6, 1997. She is survived by two brothers-in-law, Robert R. (wife, Bonnie) Davis of Naperville and Harold (wife, Mary Ellen) Davis of Doraville, Georgia; and one sister-in-law, Patricia Lattier of Shreveport, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Thomas Davis. Mrs. Davis was a secretary at the Our Saviour Parish Office in Jacksonville for 26 years. She was a member of the Church of Our Saviour, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar and Rosary Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Morgan County Home Extension. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Church of Our Saviour, with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Church of Our Saviour or Food for the Poor in Deefield Beach, Florida.
Mr. James C. Davis
James C. Davis, 80, of South Jacksonville and formerly of Arenzville, died Sunday morning, March 23, 2003, at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville. He was born July 6, 1922, in Camden, the son of Rollie Gilbert and Nona Catherine Yates Davis. He married Emma Filey on May 26, 1946 in Beardstown, and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Stephen Davis of Jacksonville; two daughters, Patricia (husband, Doug) Miller of Quincy and Donna (husband, Pat) Scranton of Hull; five grandchildren; one step-sister, Wava (husband, Ray) Sorrell of Moline; and one aunt, Dorothy Davis of Bardolph. He was preceded in death by three sons, Darrell Eugene Davis, Jerry Allen Davis, and one in infancy; and one brother, Leslie Wayne Davis. Mr. Davis worked for Burrus Seed Farms at Arenzville for 46 years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and loved gardening. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Arenzville North Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch, or Passavant Area Hospital.
Mr. Harley W. Davis
Harley W. Davis, age 76, of Griggsville, Ill. died early Saturday morning (April 26, 2003) at the home of his niece, Darla Neff. He was born October 23, 1926 in Adams County, Ill. son of the late Horton and Hazel Brown Davis. He married Della Mae Duckworth on December 2, 1950 in Griggsville, Ill. and she preceded him in death August 12, 1952. Surviving three nieces, Sherald Conner and husband Terry, Marcita Foster and Darla Neff and husband Roy all of Griggsville, Ill.; a nephew, Bill Winner and wife Karen of Hershman, Ill.; two sister-in-laws, Ruby Johnston of Pleasant Hill, Ill. and Audrey Davis of Maysville, Ill.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Richard Earl Davis at birth; a sister Flora Winner; two brothers, Richard Davis who died in W.W. II and Jimmy Davis; and a nephew Bob Winner. Mr. Davis was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the Philippines. He worked for the old Ackles Orchards as well as Penstone Orchards. He was a past member of the Griggsville American Legion Post #213. Recently, he had been employed by Stark’s Brothers Nursery in Louisiana, Mo. for over 27 years before his retirement. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday (April 28, 2003) at the Morey Cemetery south of New Canton, Ill. with Pastor Ken Lewis officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. Monday until 10:30 a.m. at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Ill. Myrtle Lucille Dawdy
Myrtle Lucille Dawdy, age 95, of Patterson, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 2003 at the Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born Jan. 9, 1908 in Hillview, the daughter of Charles H. and Belle Osborne Dawdy. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Marlin Dawdy of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; David Dawdy of Gibson City; and Mike and Denny Dawdy, both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gale H. and Paul Dawdy and a half sister, Jesse Dawdy. Miss Dawdy taught school in the Patterson and White Hall schools for many years. She then was a Baptist Missionary in Taiwan for ten years, teaching English to U.S. military personnel and Taiwanese people. She was a member of the Wilmington Baptist Church in Patterson. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at the Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson. Memorials are suggested to the Wilmington Baptist Church. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is in charge of arrangements.
Abner William Day
Abner William Day, 95, of Winchester died Sunday afternoon, March 2, 2003, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield. He was born September 19, 1907, on a farm at the southern edge of Scott County, to George Henry and Osee Elizabeth (Libbie) Cowgill Day. The Day and Cowgill families were among the earliest settlers in that area. He attended one-room schools--Keller, southeast of Alsey and Zion's Neck, west of Glasgow--and Roodhouse High School, where he graduated in 1926. He then began a 62-year-career in farming. He married the former Margaret Alred of Roodhouse on June 29, 1940, and moved to Glasgow, where they lived until 1988 when they moved to Winchester. They were the parents of a son, Gordon W. Day (wife Katherine), of Boulder, Colorado, who survives, along with two grandchildren, Sarah Day-O'Connell (husband Jeremy) of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Andrew Day, of Boulder, and a great grandson, Micah Day-O'Connell. A brother, George Kenneth Day (wife Marjorie) of Collinsville, Illinois, two nephews and a niece also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998, a sister, Lecie Vaughn, and a brother, Harold Day. Mr. Day was active in farm-related organizations. He served for many years on committees of the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and Soil Conservation Service, and also served on boards of the Scott County Farm Bureau, the Scott County Junior Fair Association, and the Scott County 4-H. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Winchester, and previously of the Alsey Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday (March 6, 2003) at the 1st Baptist Church in Winchester. Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Memorial contributions can be made to the 1st Baptist Church or to the Scott County Nursing Center.
Mrs. Elna Mary Dieterle (O'Donnell)
Elna Mary Dieterle, 91, of Springfield, and formerly of Winchester and St. Petersburg, Florida; died Thursday evening, January 16, 2003, in Jacksonville. She was born on January 2, 1912, in Winchester, the daughter of G. Thomas and Lilly Claywell O’Donnell. She married Lyndell Dieterle in Winchester in 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Dieterle is the last of her immediate family. She is survived by two nephews and numerous cousins, including Carl Francis “Bud” (wife, Hannah) Hamilton of Jacksonville. Mrs. Dieterle was Vice President and Cashier at the First State Bank of Winchester from 1929 to 1974. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, January 20, 2003, at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with burial at Winchester City Cemetery. The family will meet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Walter Lee Dodge
Walter Lee Dodge, 69, of Waverly, IL. died Saturday, March 1, 2003 in Prairie Villiage Nursing Home in Jacksonville, IL. He was born January 10, 1934 in Murrayville, IL a son of Ernest Clyde and Jane Ellen Watkins Dodge. He married Virginia Mae Turner on November 6, 1954 in Auburn, IL. and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter: Mary Elizabeth (husband Eugene) Williams of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister Catherine Reynolds of Jacksonville, Illinois; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Walter Lee ( Bud) Jr. Dodge; one brother Ronald Dodge; one sister Alice Marie Dodge in infancy. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1961, and was a member and Past Commander of Waverly V.F.W. Post # 4866. He retired in 2001, from the U. S. Postal Service in Springfield, IL. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003 in Waverly East Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service on Thursday, March 6, 2003, from 9:30a.m. until 10:45a.m. , at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to Waverly Rescue Squad.
