Ethel F. Childs, formerly of Witt, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999, in her home in San Antonio. She was 79 years old on May 11. She was born in Witt, a daughter of Wilson and Francis Young Ward. Surviving are a son, Stephen W. Childs of Schertz, Texas; a brother, George A. Ward of Springfield; and eight grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a daughter, Joan Weir and sons, Donald F. and Dennis H.Childs.

Graveside service for Joe Thomas Childs, of Hillsboro, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Woodside Cemetery in rural Fillmore with military rites conducted by VFW Post 1306, Taylor Springs. Friends may gather at Bass Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Bass Funeral Home, Hillsboro. They suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to Hillsboro Hospital or the Hillsboro Library. Mr. Childs died at 12:55 a.m. Friday, December 24, 1999, in Hillsboro Hospital. He was 77 years old on September 26, and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked in the Civil Conservation Corps in Eugene, Oregon, from 1938 to 1942, then entered the Army. He served with the Engineer Corps from September 1943 to November 1945, mostly in the European Theater, and was awarded several medals and bars. A sheet metal worker after the war, he started his career in Jackson, Miss., then joined Brown and Kerr Roofing and Sheet Metal in Chicago, where he worked for 33 years. He lived in Zion and Lake Villa, Ill., before retiring in 1986 and moving to Viola, Wis. He moved to Hillsboro in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose Lodge and Sheet Metal Local 73 of Chicago for more than 45 years. He was born in Louisville, Miss., a son of Everett and Eva Mae Taylor Childs. He married Sarah Frances Gilmore on October 3, 1942, in Jackson, Miss. She survives. Surviving also are sons, Tom Childs and wife Debbie of Martinsville, Ind.; daughters, Geri Henderson of Winthrop Harbor, Martha McGuffin and husband Joe of Conyers, Ga., Barbara Hewitt and husband Larry of Hillsboro; a brother, Bill Childs of Ellenboro, North Carolina; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were brothers, Walter and J.W. Childs.

Mr. Chipkar died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 1999, in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. He was 70 years old on April 14, and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a machine operator at Owens - Illinois Glass Company in Alton before he retired. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 214 A.F.&A.M. and the Order of the Eastern Star in Gillespie, Croatian Lodge 217 in Benld, VFW Post 4547 in Gillespie and the American Legion Post in Carlinville. He was born in Eagarville, a son of Michael Chipkar and Pauline Lesko Chipkar Fontilla. His wife, the former Selma Jean Katzmarck, died July 31, 1990. Surviving are a brother, Joseph Chipkar of Florida and a step son, Robert Duffy of Hurst, Texas.

Ativo Chiti, father of Robert A. Chiti of Staunton, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, in Virden Nursing Center. He was 89 years old on May 5. Mr. Chiti was a life-long resident of Auburn and worked for Sangamo Electric for 31 years before he retired. He was born in Virden, a son of Angelo and Josephine Baldi Chiti. He married Irma Tinor in 1931 in Virden. She survives. Surviving also are another son, Fred Chiti of Killeen, Texas; sister, Ada Mayer of Vermont; brother, Ralph Chiti of Jackson, Miss.; and seven grandchildren. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today in the Bramley Funeral Home, Auburn, where services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Auburn Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements for Elizabeth A. Choate, 86 of Litchfield, are pending at Plummer Funeral Home. Mrs. Choate died at 10:14 this morning in St. Francis Hospital. Funeral Mass for Elizabeth A. "Betty" Choate, of Litchfield, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church by the Rev. Father David Schmidt. Burial will be Monday in the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, St. Louis. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Plummer Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund. Mrs. Choate died at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 86 years old on December 17. She worked as a cook at Care Inn Convalescent Center, now known as Litchfield HealthCare Center. She had also worked as a waitress and for the SS. Kresge Dime Store, The Mayfair Hotel and The Lennox Hotel, all in St. Louis. She was a member of the Litchfield Senior Citizens, Women of the Moose Chapter 581 and the VFW 3912 Auxiliary. She was born in St. Louis, a daughter of Nicholas and Suzanna Stuprick Lehmann. She was first married to Richard L. Choate. After their divorce, she married Led Ziegler. Surviving are sisters, Catherine Reiser and Margaret Kautzner and husband Walter, all of St. Louis. Preceding her in death were a brother, Nicholas Lehmann Jr. and sister, Ann Voner Haar. Funeral Mass for Elizabeth A. Choate, of Litchfield, was said at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church. The Rev. Father David Schmidt was the officiant. Reader was Madelon Sophir. Mary Thunhorst and John Wand were Ministers of the Eucharist. Organist was Kathy Skinner and Polly Wand was the cantor. Musical selections for the Mass were "Be Not Afraid," "Eye Has Not Seen" and "Song of Farewell." Committal service was held this morning at 9:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis. Rev. Father Voelker of St. George Church officiated. Pallbearers were Walter C. Kautzner, Kenneth McGuffey, Matthew McGuffey, Quentin McGuffey, Hal Reiser and Peter Rybar. Following the funeral service a luncheon was provided for family and friends by the women of the church. Plummer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Choate, 86, died Wednesday, October 27, in St. Francis Hospital.

Rose Evelyne Christian, mother of Daniel R. Christian of Sorento, died Saturday, September 18, 1999, in Columbia, Mo. She was 60 years old on June 20. She resided in Steedman, Mo. She was born in Otterville, Mo., a daughter of Harold and Reta Homan Cordry. She married Harrison Christian on February 21, 1953, in Gasconade, Mo. He survives. Surviving, besides her husband and son, are daughters, Debra Ferguson of Green ville, Kathryn E. Floyd of Highland; brother, Arthur Cordry and Gerald Crodry, both of Clarksville, Ark., Lester Cordry of Mountain Air, N.M. and John Kuebler of Montgomery City, Mo., David Kuebler of Gravette, Ark. Services were held in Big Srpings, Mo., with burial in Liberty Cemetery at Big Springs.

Matthew Lee Christopher, brother of Carolyn Simer of Hillsboro, died Saturday, December 11, 1999, in Prairie Rose Health Care Center, Pana. He was 27 years old on May 30. A resident of San Jose, he was a service technician for his father's sales and service business. He was born in Pekin, a son of Roger and Carol Willis Christopher. Surviving also are daughter, Courtney Christopher of San Jose; his parents, a brother, three other sisters and his grandfather, all of San Jose.

Mrs. Christy died at 9:07 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 1999, in Hillsboro Hospital. She was 88 years old on February 27. She lived most of her life in Hillsboro and worked at the Hillsboro Glass factory until she retired in 1966. She was a member of the Hillsboro High School Sports Boosters and the Jolly Grandmothers Club. She was born in Coffeen, a daughter of Jess and Mahala Carlock Matthews. She married Kessler Christy on April 27, 1929, in Hillsboro. He died August 9, 1937. Surviving are a son, Clarence Christy and wife Thelma of Decatur; daughters, Juanita Plunkett and husband Don of Coffeen, Viola Pier and husband Charles of Schram City; sisters, Lena L. Hudson of Hillsboro, Vona Hagood of Pana; eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Preceding her in death were brothers, Harry, Dewey, Harold, Jody and Oral Matthews and a sister, Verna Matthews in infancy.

Mr. Chulick died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, July 12, 1999, in Staunton Memorial Hospital. He was 87 years old on April 5, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a school administrator for 41 years. He was a 1930 graduate of Benld High School, attended Blackburn College for two years. He started his teaching career in the Benld Grade School District in 1932. Later, he obtain a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Illinois. He also spent three terms in the Army. He taught grades 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 at Benld. In 1961, when the Benld and Gillespie districts merged, he was named principal of the Benld schools. In 1969, he was named curriculum coordinator and assistant superintendent in the combined Benld - Gillespie school district, Community Unit School District 7. He served in the post until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Benld Owls and VFW Post 4547 of GChulick, Walter J.illespie. He was born in Benld, a son of Wasyl and Christina Chulick. He married Josephine Dominetto on June 20, 1935, in Benld. She survives. Surviving also are a son, Dr. Anthony Chulick and wife Micki of DeKalb; sister, Ann Muich of Benld; granddaughters, Caroline Chulick of Dallas, Texas, Cassandra Chulick of DeKalb. Preceding him in death wre a daughter, Geraldine Chulick; brother, John Chulick; and sisters, Eva Halechko, Mary Luce and Helen Rossetto.

Surviving are a daughter, Darlene Cresto of Williamson; eight grandchidlren, 19 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Donald Breuchaud; daughter, Virginia Ruth Ripperda; and a great grandchild.

Friends may call in the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Mr. Chumley died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 1998, in Hillsboro Hospital. He was 86 years old on February 28, and an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a farmer in the Montgomery County area for all of his life with the exception of his military service. He entered the Army Air Force on September 19, 1942, at Scott Field near Belleville and was discharged on January 4, 1946, in Green sboro, N.C. He was a member of the American Legion of Irving. He was born in Coffeen, a son of Hugh and Roxie Spears Chumley, and he never married. Surviving are a brother, Newell Chumley of Coffeen; sisters, Helen Huber of East Alton, Laura Belle White of Coffeen. Preceding him in death were brothers, James, Harold, Lewey, Kenneth, Paul, Robert and two brothers in infancy; and sisters, Esther Harrison, Pernina Chumley, Martha Cragg, Ida Smith and Virginia Wiegman.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Mr. Chumley died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. He was 63 years old on December 14. He worked in the construction industry. After high school he was employed by Granite City Steel for several years. He then went to work for Litchfield Bituminous rising to supervisor and spending 32 years there. He also spent five years working for Sankey Construction of Springfield. He was born in Montgomery County, a son of Floyd L. and Evelyn Mae Thacker Chumley. His first marriage, to Carolyn Hawthorn, ended in divorce. On March 9, 1968, in Clarksville, Tenn., he married Judith Cruthis Ridens. She survives. Surviving also are sons, Michael K. Ridens of Hillsboro, Sam R. Chumley of Collinsville, John D. Chumley of Irving; daughters, Sue Snow of Coffeen, Linda Ridens Liebschur of Hillsboro, Kathy Ridens of Coffeen, Judy Lynn Chumley of Hillsboro, Sara Chumley Shipley and husband Jeremy of Witt; a brother, Jack Chumley and wife Margaret of Coffeen; and 16 grandchildren.

Mrs. Churan died at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 16, 1999, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield. She was 47 years old on October 16. She was a teacher and had worked in several local schools. She worked also as a teacher with Mid-State Special Education in Litchfield. She was a 1973 graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, with a bachelor degree in Education. A life-long resident of Hillsboro, she was a member of the First Baptist Church there and was active in and contributed to numerous local charities. She was born in Hillsboro, a daughter of John D. and Ruth F. Jordan Hanke. She married John A. Churan on June 17, 1972, in butler. He survives. Surviving also are daughters, Tana Churan of West Yellowstone, Montana, Tienne Churan, a student at the University of New Mexico at Albany; father, John Hanke of Butler; mother, Ruth Hanke of Hillsboro; brothers, John, Don, Dan and Chris; and sisters, Lucretia, Rebecca and Jenny.

Florence D. Claridge, sister of Hazel Warf of Hillsboro, died Monday, March 29, 1999, in St. Louis. She was 83 years old on September 6. She was born in Gillespie, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Garrett. Her husband, Newt Claridge, preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Vicke Harrison; another sister, Bernice Garrett of St. Louis; and four grandchildren. Among other survivors is a nephew, Norman Halpin of Gillespie. Preceding her in death were brothers, Mike and George Garrett and one in infancy. Burial was in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, St. Louis.

Mrs. Clark died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, in Heritage Manor of Gillespie. She was 93 years old on June 5. She was a sewer with Welch Baby Carriage company before she retired. She was born in Gainesville, Georgia, a daughter of Roy and Nola Christopher Garret. Her husband, George Clark, died June 20, 1985. Surviving are sons, Herbert Wilson of Auburn, John Wilson of Gillespie; daughter, Shirley Yeager of Arnold, Mo.; step daughter, Shirley Teague of Van Buren, Mo.; 22 grandchildren and several great and great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, James Wilson; step son, Bobby Clark; and sisters, Willa Mae and Eva.

Elizabeth Clark, formerly of Gillespie, died Saturday, February 13, 1999, in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. She was 78 years old on November 19. She was born in Gillespie, a daughter of Delbert and Augusta Maria Reese Glover. She married James B. Clark in East St. Louis in 1947 and he died in 1985. Surviving are sons, Norman B. Bertrand and James B. Clark Jr., both of Springfield; a daughter, Barbara M. Curtis of Springfield; a sister, Caroline DePriest of Collinsville; brothers, Bill Sandner of Collinsville, Fred Sandner of New Berlin, Norman Sandner of Athens; and seven grandchildren. No services were held. The remains were cremated with Vancil Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

He was 72 years old on October 14, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired farmer and trucker, a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was born in Whitesville, Ky., a son of Joseph Herman and Mary Edna Howard Clark. He married Ovida Beloit on November 26, 1955. She died May 27, 1998. Surviving are daughters, Dorothy Schwartzkoph and husband Bruce of Hillsboro, Jacqueline McDaniel and husband Bruce of Jacksonville; his mother, Mary Clark of Nokomis; brothers, Floyd Clark of Ohlman, Joe Clark of Coalton, Robert and Bernard "Chub" Clark of Nokomis; a sister, Erma Janssen of Atwater; and three grandchildren, Tiffany Clark, Jason McDaniel and Erin Schwartzkoph.

He was 79 years old on October 1, and an Army veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart while in the service. He worked as a mechanic and farmer, and was known as the neighborhood mechanic in Taylor Springs where he resided for the past 32 years. Before moving to Taylor Springs, he lived in Sorento, Litchfield, Edinburg, Fayette City, Shobenier, Donnellson and Mechanicsburg in Illinois and in Missouri for two years. He was a member of Indian Creek Primitive Bapist Church of Petersburg. He was born in Sorento, a son of Cecil Clayburn Clark and Eva Mabel Weaver Clark Helm. He married Mary Elizabeth Kohl on April 2, 1943, in Edinburg. She survives. Surviving also are daughters, Janice Eileen Clark and husband Russell of Jerseyville, Mary Lou Swanson and husband John of Galena, Mo., Joyce Anita Clark of Carrollton; brother, Robert Clark of California; grandchildren, Danielle Kanallakan of Brighton, Damien E. Clark of Jerseyville. Preceding him in death were a brother, Emery Clark and sisters, one in infancy and Betty Jane Shirley who died this past March 25.

Lucille Clark, sister of Rex Gilley of Litchfield, died Sunday, January 10, 1999, in a nursing home in Clearwater, Fla. She was 94 years old in December. She owned and operated a beauty shop for many years in Litchfield and Hillsboro. Surviving besides her brother are a son, Robert Clark in Florida and grandchildren. Other survivors include nieces and a nephew, Jody Brubaker and Nancy Funk in Litchfield, Linda Parkinson and Kent Scheffer in Pana. No services are planned. The remains were cremated.

She worked for Hiken Brothers Furniture and for the Wells Harrison Good Year Tire in Collinsville before retiring in the early 1980s. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Collinsville, Collinsville VFW Auxiliary and the Collinsville American Legion Post 365 Auxiliary where she was past president and cashier for the Friday night fish fry for 40 years. She was born in Hillsboro, a daughter of Dick Grady Whitaker and Viola Day Whitaker Sprott. She married Guy K. Clark on April 25, 1937, in Hillsboro. He died September 13, 1986. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Atwood and husband Michael of Staunton; a sister, Myrtle Tiffany of Maxwell, Iowa; grandchildren, Michelle Kreger and husband Lance of Livingston, Kyle and Tyler Atwood of Staunton; three great grandchildren, Brittani, Dakota and Kane Kreger of Livingston. Preceding her in death besides her parents were her step father, John Sprott and a brother, Frank Whitaker.

Mr. Clayton, of Wood River, died at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, July 30, in Rosewood Care Center, Edwardsville. He was 74 years old on January 13. A farmer until he retired in 1978, he farmed in the Highland, Donnellson and Hillsboro areas. He had been very active as a square dance caller since 1961, and was designated the number one caller in the St. Louis area. He also enjoyed fishing, bead craft and woodworking. He was born in Highland, a son of Walter M. and Clara C. Weiss Clayton. He married Gladys L. Gilomen on March 8, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo. She survives. Surviving also are a son, Larry G. Clayton of Inola, Okla.; a sister, Dorothy Bargetzi of Trenton; two grandsons and two great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a brother, Wesley Clayton who died in infancy.The following are additional nieces and nephews that were omitted Olin Clayton of Raymond, Anita (Clayton) Wahlsmith of Oconee and Yvonne (Clayton) Hicks.
Coatney, Pauline J.
Graveside services for Pauline Joyce Coatney, of Dorchester, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Bunker Hill City Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Brooker officiating. Landers Funeral Home in Bunker Hill is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church in Dorchester, of which she was a member. Mrs. Coatney died at 9:37 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 71 years old on May 13. She was born in Gillespie, a daughter of Charles and Myrna Cleeton Palmer. She married Richard Kenneth Coatney on May 7, 1949; he died August 1, 1998. Surviving are a daughter, Myrna St. Clair and husband Randy of Hidalgo; brothers, Richard Palmer of Virden, Sam Palmer of Gillespie; sisters, Dorothy Hubbard of California, Arline Hopper, Bea Thomas and Eva Palmer, all of Gillespie, Lorraine Blevins of Springfield, Lena Hampton of Thayer; five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a brother, Albert and a sister, Gloria.

Services for Richard (Dick) Coatney, of Dorchester, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Lutheran Church there with the Rev. Ron Brooker officiating. Friends may call on Saturday in the church from noon until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society or St. John's Church. Landers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Coatney died at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 1, 1998, in Sunrise Manor at Carlinville. He would have been 69 years old on August 5. He was a truck driver for Yellow Freight before he retired in 1985. An Army veteran, he was a member of the Mt. Olive VFW. He was also a member of the Elks. He was born in Alton, a son of Kenneth and Hulda Knoche Coatney. He married Pauline Palmer on May 7, 1949, in Carlinville. She survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Myrna St. Clair and husband Randy of Hidalgo; sister, Kathleen Dubbelde of Bethalto; brothers, Maurice Coatney of Godfrey, Norman Coatney of Mt. Carroll; five grandchildren, Tammy Gross and husband Wayne, Ginger Stoll and husband Craig, Ronne St. Clair and wife Angie, Tim St. Clair and wife Donita, Randy St. Calir and wife Kathie; and nine great grandchildren.
Coatney, Ruth L.
Services for Ruth L. Coatney, daughter of Alma Schmidt of Staunton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, Carlinville, with the Rev. H. Christopher Sheets officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Carlinville. Mrs. Coatney died Sunday, December 6, 1998, in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. She was 60 years old on August 9. She was a secretary at Farm Credit Services for more than 15 years. An active member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Carlinville, she was the church organist for more than 30 years, director of the church choir and a member of the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Carlinville Community Choir. She was born in Worden, a daughter of George and Alma Sievers Schmidt. She married Raymond L. "Beaver" Coatney in 1961 in Hamel. He survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Cindy Stayton and husband Brad of Carlinville; sons, Phil Coatney and wife Lynanne, Steve Coatney and wife Kristin, all of Chicago; sisters, Carol Prange of Bridgeton, Mo., Doris Schmidt of St. Louis; brothers, Norman Schmidt of Carlinville and Eldon Schmidt of Worden; and five grandchildren.
