Services for Harriet Irene Phillips, of Litchfield, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Plummer Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Ted Schelich, chaplain at St. Francis Hospital, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be directed to St. Francis Hospital or the American Heart Association. Mrs. Phillips died at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 90 years old on September 29. She and her husband, Gene, moved to Litchfield from Granite City on January 2, 1935. She worked with her husband at Vern and Gene's IGA and was also employed in the office of WEPCO Manufacturing Company in Litchfield. She was a member of the Litchfield Country Club for more than 60 years and was an active participant in golf, bowling, bridge clubs, the arts and various women's clubs. She was heavily involved in the pageant for the 1953 Litchfield Centennial celebration. She was born in Granite City, a daughter of Harvey Thomas and Olive Estella Schembra Boone. She married Eugene Thomas Phillips on July 1, 1933, in Granite City. Surviving are sons, Clifford Phillips and wife Frances of Carbondale, Timothy Phillips and wife Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. A brother, Daniel Francis Boone, preceded her in death.

Services for Ronald D. Phillips, father of Kevin Phillips of Litchfield, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kravanya Funeral Home, Gillespie, with the Rev. Greg White officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Carlinville. Friends may call on Wednesday in the funeral home from noon until the time of service. Mr. Phillips, of Carlinville, died at 2:28 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999, in his home. He was 62 years old on March 10. He was a truck driver for C.R.S.T. Trucking Company before he retired. He was born in Alton, a son of Percy and Corda Harstock Phillips. His wife, the former Mary Jane Mellenthin, survives. Surviving also are another son, Ronald Phillips of Austin, Texas; daughters, Jacqueline Mellenthin of Huntingburg, Ind., Theresa Stagner of Staunton, Sarah Phillips of Carlinville, Carol Martin of Pekin; mother, Corda Phillips of Wood River; brothers, Bill Phillips of Camden, N.J., Larry Phillips of Alton; and 13 grandchildren. His father, Percy Phillips, preceded him in death. Services for Harriet Irene Phillips, of Litchfield, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Plummer Funeral Home. The Rev. During the service eulogies were given by Mrs. Phillips son, Clifford Phillips and a granddaughter, Pam Chaney. Mrs. Chaney, representing the grandchildren, gave a eulogy of the attributes they favored in their grandmother. Played in the background was the song, "Little Things Mean Alot." Pallbearers were Mason Bouillon and Bill Roach, both of Litchfield, Bill McKenna of Crestwood, Mo., Chris Phillips of Fort Worth, Texas, Clifford Phillips Jr. of Marion, Tim Phillips of Makanda and Derek Bittner of West Frankfort. Following the committal service family and friends gathered at the Litchfield Country Club for a luncheon. Mrs. Phillips, 90, died Sunday, May 30, in St. Francis Hospital.
Piazza, Emma M.
Services for Emma M. Piazza, of Hillsboro, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Patton Memorial Home there with the Rev. Richard Bolin, pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Hillsboro, officiating. Burial will be St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday in the funeral home from noon until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to Hillsboro Health Care Center or Hillsboro Hospital. Mrs. Piazza died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in Hillsboro Health Care Center. She was 94 years old on March 10. She was an owner and operated Piazza Brothers Grocery store in Kortkamp for nearly 40 years. She also worked at Jubelt's Bakery for seven years. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary. With the exception of two years spent in Chicago, she resided in the Hillsboro area most of her life. She was born in Hillsboro, a daughter of John and Madelena Erspamer Maninfior. She married Emil Piazza on October 22, 1921, in Hillsboro. He died in August 1974. Surviving are a daughter, Irene Reck and husband Virgil of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Susan White and husband Gene, Randy Reck, all of Hillsboro, David Reck and wife Lynda of Sebring, Fla., Debi Gray of Kirkland, Wash.; and nine grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a daughter, Dorothy Gray in 1987; brother, Frank Maninfior; sisters, Albina Moreland and Catherine Fahien.

Services for Dena M. Pickering, formerly of Coffeen, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home, Green ville, with the Rev. Herbert H. Coates officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home after 4 p.m. today. Mrs. Pickering died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 1999, in Fair Oaks Nursing Home, Green ville. She was 91 years old on January 23. She was born in Pella, Iowa, a daughter of Nicholas Aire and Johanna Gerendena Zaayer Van Haaften. She married the Rev. Guy Pickering, August 29, 1929, in Toledo, Iowa. He died February 23, 1986. The couple lived in Coffeen for a time. Besides churches in Illinois, her husband served in Iowa and Missouri and was also superintendent of the Missouri Conference. She was a member of the Green ville Free Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Helen Neece of Green ville; a sister, Martha Adamson of Des Moines, Iowa.; a grandchild and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were sisters, Josephine Van Zomeren and Lora Simms; a brother, Ira VAn haaften; and two grandsons, Michael Gregory and Jeffrey Russell Neece.
Pieper, Melvin J.
Thomas Joseph Pieper, son of Melvin J. Pieper of Nokomis, died Sunday, August 15, 1999, in his home in Springfield. He was 49 years old on October 22. A a chef and a musician, he worked for numerous restaurants around Springfield and also performed with many area bands. He was born in Springfield, a son of Melvin J. Pieper and Sally Ann Kauffman. He married Trudy Pribble on December 4, 1987 in Springfield. She survives. Surviving also are a step son, Shane Peveles of Bloomingdale, Ind.; father and step mother, Melvin and Laura Pieper of Nokomis; brother, Timothy Pieper and wife Darla of Kincaid; sister, Tricia Leaderbrand and husband Terry of Grayslake. His mother, Sally Ann Kauffman, preceded him in death. Friends may on Wednesday in Kirlin - Egan and Butler Funeral Home from noon until the services at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Mr. Pilger, of Iberia, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, in Lake Ozark General Hospital at Osage Beach, Mo. He was 47 years old on October 17. He was employed as a clerk in a department store and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Iberia. He was born in Alton, a son of William Olis and Dolema Murial Hammers Pilger. Surviving are brothers, William Pilger and wife June of St. Geniveve, Mo., Patrick Pilger and wife Marti of Overland, Mo., Robert Pilger and wife Susan of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Dorothy Spurgeon and husband Melvin of Alton, Mary Taylor of West Plains, Mo., Beverly Bowers and husband Walter of Florida, Helen Clark of Golconda, Margaret Crump and husband Bill of Wood River. Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Donald and Michael Pilger.

Services for Michael Lee Pilger, Sr., formerly of Litchfield, were held at 11 this morning in Plummer Funeral Home. Rev. Ed Fogle, of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Olive, officiated. Burial was in Elm Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Crawford of Hornsby, Rocky Estell of Hillsboro, Alvin Scott, Charles Speed, Brian Taylor and Terry Taylor, all of Litchfield. Following the services a meal was provided for the family and friends by the Women of the Moose. Mr. Pilger, 49, died Monday, October 26, in Monticello, Ind.

Services for Walter J. Pinder will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in Patton Memorial Home, Hillsboro, with the Rev. Randy Sands, pastor of the Free Methodist Church of Hillsboro, officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Warrensburg, Mo. Friends may call in the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Mr. Pinder, from Forsyth, Mo., died at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in Montgomery Health Care Center, Taylor Springs. He was 94 years old on September 21. He spent most of his life in the Branson, Mo., area. He constructed and was proprietor of a resort at Protem, Mo., for approximately 25 years. He also worked on pipe organs. He was a Mason for 59 years and was currently a member of the Welston Masonic Lodge in St. Louis. He was born in Warrensburg, Mo., a son of William and Lucinda Francis Pinder, and graduated from high school there. He married Mary Cherevnak on April 21, 1927, in St. Louis. She survives. Surviving also are a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were one brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Pirok died at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 1999, in her home. She was 63 years old on July 12. She operated the family-owned Sky-Lo tavern in New Douglas, and was a member of St. Michael's Church. She was born in New Douglas, a daughter of Trueitt and Mary Louise Kline Foulke. She married Stephen Pirok on June 25, 1955, in St. Ubaldus Church, New Douglas. He survives. Surviving also are a son, Kevin Pirok and wife Susan of Staunton; daughter, Michelle Hamilton and husband Richard of New Douglas; sister, Myra Styffe of Holiday Shores; six grandchildren, Jason Pirok, Tom Harmon, Jr., Kim Pirok, Robert Pirok, Justin Hamilton and Melissa Hamilton; and one great grandchild, Christopher Michael Pirok.

Ms. Plopper died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 1998, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 76 years old on June 21. She worked at Plopper's Laboratories, Inc., which was owned and operated by her parents and at International Paper Company in Ltichfield. She was a member of St. Timothy's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working with crafts, especially making bows and arrows and using them. She was born in Litchfield, a daughter of Herbert H. and Hazel Mae Walker Plopper. Her marriage ended in divorce. Surviving are sisters, Mary Jean Plopper and Shirley Tucker, both of Springfield. Preceding her in death were an infant daughter and a brother, Lowell Plopper. Services for Evelyn E. Plopper, of Litchfield, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Meinschein Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Revisky officiated. Irene Graden was the organist. She was a member of St. Joseph's Altar Society and Croatian Lodge 217 of Benld. She was born in Coal City, a daughter of Dominic and Catherine Campo Savant. She married John Plovich on October 19, 1935, in Waterloo. He died August 31, 1993. Surviving are sons, John D. Plovich and wife Carolyn of Gillespie, Terry D. Plovich and wife Jo Ann of Benld; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were brothers, James Savant Sr., Dominic Savant Jr. and a sister, Angelina Bertagnolli.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Morrisonville. She was born in Atwater, a daughter of Jacob Clarence and Lena Leotta Fawcet Daugherty. Her husband, William Plowman, preceded her in death. Surviving are sons, Bill Plowman and wife Norma of Hillsboro, Terry Plowman of Springfield; daughters, Katherine Stingel, Assumption, Linda Quigley of Brookfield, Mo., Janet Bierman of Springfield; brothers, Kennon Daugherty of Springfield, Donald Daugherty of Carlinville; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Preceding her in death were a son, Robert Plowman; brothers, Clarence, Harley and Glen Daugherty; and a sister, Florence. CORRECTION An addition has been made to the obituary of Mildred Plowman which appeared in Wednesday's edition. Mrs. Plowman, 77 of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, December 14. He was 44 years old on April 12. He worked at a recycling center and various other jobs. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Litchfield before moving with his family to St. Ann, Mo. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Ann. He was born in Litchfield, a son of Raymond James and Pauline Jane Boucher Pokorney. Surviving are sons, Robert A. Pokorney Jr. and Matthew Jon Pokorney, both of St. Charles, Mo.; his parents, Raymond and Pauline Pokorney of St. Ann; brother, James A. Pokorney and wife Mary of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Susan M. Rivard and husband Wayne of Chandler, Texas. Others surviving include a niece and two nephews, Amy Pokorney of Overland Park, Richard Pokorney of Gillespie and Timothy Pokorney of St. Louis. A brother, Raymond J. She was born in Holland Township of Shelby County, a daughter of Eli and Grace Riley Blickem. She married Cecil Polley on November 23, 1929, in Shelbyville. He survives. Surviving also are daughters, Doris Kortwitz and husband Wes of Nokomis; Cressie Mitchell of Springfield; sisters, Lois Hanson of Chicago, Iris Martin of Effingham, Phyllis Burdzilauskas of Pana; brothers, Charley Blickem of Florida, Joe Blickem and Robert Blickem; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Gene Polley; grandchildren, Lisa Carol, Marc Kottwitz; one great grandson, Blake Polley; and six brothers and sisters.

Venie Michael Pollo, of Florissant, Mo., and formerly of Benld, died Friday, June 25th at Village North Manor in Florissant. He was 85 years old on September 28, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He retired from Day Bright Lighting, a division of Emerson Electric. He was the eldest child of Steve and Mary Koniak Pollo. He married Mariana Perino, also of Benld, on November 19, 1944, at Love Field in Dallas, Texas. She survives. Surviving also are a son, Daniel Pollo and wife Jeanne of Dublin, Calif.; daughter, Catherine Behme and husband Robert of Edwardsville; brothers, Benedict and Stephen Pollo, both of Benld, Anton Pollo and wife Dora of Lansing, Mich.; sisters, Cecilia Pollo, Mary Ann Pollo, Monica Crouse and husband Everett, all of Benld; grandsons, Kevin Pollo and wife Alice of San Antonio, Texas, Brian Pollo of Kansas City, Mo., and Michael Behme of Edwardsville. Preceding him in death were two brothers. Funeral Mass was held Monday in North American Martyrs Catholic Church with entombment at Sacred Heart Mausoleum, both in Florissant.

Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Partnership for Educational Excellence in Community Unit School District 7, Gillespie - Benld, or the Gillespie - Benld Ambulance Service. Mr. Polo was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday February 24, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital from injuries suffered in a single vehicle accident. He was 54 years old on September 30, and an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a coal miner at Moneterey Coal Mine 1, Carlinville, and a member of United Mine Workers Local 1613. He was also a member of VFW Post 4547 and the Masonic Lodge in Gillespie and the Ansar Shrine in Springfield. He was born in Chicago, a son of Edward and Jule Sieglitz Pollo, and was a 1962 graduate of Mt. Olive High School. He married Carol Kalaskie on August 7, 1965, in Staunton. She survives. Surviving also are a son, Anthony Pollo of Gillespie; daughter, Wendy Pollo of Carlinville; and a sister, Lynn Shapiro of Bloomington, Ind. His parents preceded him in death.

Services for John L. Pomatto, Sr., of Wilsonville, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Kravanya Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Robert Porter officiating. Burial will be in Benld City Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be directed to Staunton Memorial Hospital. Mr. Pomatto died at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 1999, in Staunton Memorial Hospital. He was 79 years old on February 16, and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked in the shipping department of Olin Corporation in East Alton before he retired. In his earlier years he was a coal miner. He was a member of VFW Post 4547 of Gillespie and the East Alton Machinists Union. He was a son of Michael and Dora Gordon Pomatto, but his birth place is unknown at this time. He married Josephine Pomatto on May 1, 1948, in Wilsonville. She died April 3, 1994. Surviving are a son, John "Jake" Pomatto and wife Sherry of Dorsey; brothers, Eugene Pomatto of Charleston, S.C., Robert Pomatto of Gillespie; sisters, Eleanor Rosini and Erma Pomatto of Wilsonville; and four grandchildren, Dino Pomatto of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Lisa Pomatto of Cape Coral, Fla., Jenni and Jamie Stumpf of Dorsey. Preceding him in death were a brother, Mike Pomatto and a sister, Mary Ann Pomatto.

Services for Gladys C. Pope, of Nokomis, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church there with the Rev. Jeff Bapst officiating. Burial will be in Nokomis Cemetery. Mrs. Pope died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, April 11, 1999, in Decatur Memorial Hospital. She was 88 years old on April 2. She was born in St. Louis, a daughter of John and Margaret Byerly Nussman. She married Warren Pope on June 15, 1929, in Detroit, Mich. He died on December 26, 1982. Surviving are daughters, Kathryn Dissler of Glen Carbon, Linda Virgil of Decatur, Audrey Jenkins of Divernon, Beverly Stevenson of East Alton; sons, John Pope of Florissant, Mo., Dale Pope of Chillicothe; a sister, Helen Flaxbeard of Maryville; 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren.
Pope, Mabel Bertha
Services for Mabel Bertha Pope, of Hillsboro, were held at 2 p.m. today in Hough and Sons Funeral Home there. The Rev. Dallas White officiated. Burial was in Irving Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Schram City Baptist Church or the Hillsboro Hospital. Mrs. Pope died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, February 26, 1999, in Hillsboro Hospital. She was 95 years old on October 19. She attended Schram City schools and worked at Ball Brothers Glass factory before she retired. She was a member of the Schram City Baptist Church, the Honor Society of Old Settlers and the Home Comfort Club. She was born in Mulkytown, a daughter of George and Jennie Lyerla Lewis. She married Clarence Pope on March 6, 1920, in Hillsboro. He died August 21, 1957. Surviving are a daughter, Betty Bandor and husband William of Hillsboro; two granddaughters, Becky Cullison and husband Steve and Beth Petcher; and four great grandchildren, Taylor, Blair and Paige Cullison and Erica Petcher.

Mr. Popovich died at 12:25 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 1998, in Barnes � Jewish Hospital, St. Louis. He was 84 years old on September 20. He owned and operated Popovich's Grocery STore in White City from 1940 to 1978. He was also a construction worker, truck driver and laborer at Shell Oil. He attended White City Public Grade School and Mt. Olive High School. He was an avid Chicago Cub and Bear fan. He loved motorcycles and rode his Harley Davidson for 66 years. An avid motorcycle racing fan, he was a charter member of the Midstate Motorcycle Club. He also loved playing Poly and was a member of the Turner Hall Poly league. He was born in White City, a son of Blazo Paul and Flora Schreiter Popovich. He married Josephine Martha Myers on December 7 in St. Louis. She survives. Surviving also are a sister, Bernice Wright and husband Phil of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 13 nieces and nephews, Tamara Hurley, Lisa Savale, Peter, Steven and Randy Wright, David, Rene, Denise and Mark DeLaurent, Charles Popovich Jr., Christy Yurkovich, Cindy Martin and Candy Montoro; 25 great nieces and nephews; four great great nieces and nephews. Others surviving include a cousin, Mirko Popovich. Preceding him in death were a brother, Charles "Chisel" Popovich and sisters, Anna Rose Popovich and Louise DeLaurent. Following the services a lunch will be served to family and friends in Mt. Olive Veterans Hall. Olive. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art," "Wherever You Go" and "Here I Am Lord." Pianist and soloist was Rosemary Messner. Pallbearers were Paul Vuckovich, Nick Vuckovich, Mark Dragovich, Robert Kertis, Mike Frizzo and Tom Svetlik. Following the services a lunch was served to family and friends in the Mt. Olive Veterans Hall. Mr. Popovich, 84, died Saturday, November 7, in Barnes � Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.

Services for Josephine Martha "Josie" Popovich, of White City, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Becker and Son Funeral Home, Mt. Olive, with the Rev. Father George Radosevich officiating. Burial will be in Chapman Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested to Chapman Cemetery or the Mt. Olive parks. Mrs. Popvich died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Heritage Manor of Staunton. She was 80 years old on December 11. She owned and operated Popvich's Grocery Store in White City with her husband, George, from 1940 to 1978. She enjoyed painting and won many ribbons as a member of the Prairie Painters Art Club. She also enjoyed motorcycles and was a member of the Midstate Motorcycle Club in White City. Another hobby she especially enjoyed was gardening. The former Josephine Martha Myers, she was born in Boston, Mass. and married George John Popovich in St. Louis on December 7, 1940. He died November 7, 1998. A brother, David, was killed in action in World War II. Surviving are a sister - in - law, Bernice Popovich Wright of Scottsdale, Ariz., along with many nieces and nephews.
