Spickerman, Pauline E.

Pauline E. Spickerman, who was known for her inspirational speaking and for singing in churches throughout the area, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 1999, in her home in Dow. She was 74 years old on June 11. Besides speaking and singing, she owned and operated Pingy's Floral in Alton. Before that she was a teller at the Wedge Bank for many years. During World War II, she was employed at Western Cartridge. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Alton where she was choir director. She also taught Sunday school at the church until she was well into her '70s. She often said retiring from the class was one of the hardest things she ever had to do. She was also a member of the Dorcas women's group and active in Mothers' Club and PTA. She was born in Alton, a daughter of George Robert and Stella L. Tindall Parish. She married Melvin Spickerman on May 2, 1959, in Alton. He survives. Surviving also are sons, James A. McDonald and wife Debbie of Rosewood Heights, Paul Spickerman and wife Ruth of Rensselaer, Ind.; a brother, George Robert Parish Jr. of Mountain Home, Ark.; sisters, Roberta "Bobbie" Wagner of Alton, Juanita Hanei of Venus, Fla.; and three grandchildren, James Andrew McDonald III, Jonathan and Elizabeth Ellen Spickerman. Services were held Saturday in the First Christian Church of Alton. Burial was in Igersoll Cemetery. Gent Funeral Home, Alton, ws in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials be directed to Saint Anthony's Hospice or the First Christian Church.

Spisak, Jr., John

Funeral arrangements for John Spisak, Jr., formerly of Mt. Olive, are pending at Becker and Son Funeral Home there. Mr. Spisak, 89, died Thursday in California. Funeral Mass for John Lawrence Spisak, Jr., formerly of Mt. Olive, will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Trinity Church there by the Rev. Father Larry Anschutz. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Becker and Son Funeral Home. Rosary will be said at 7:45 p.m. The family suggests memorials be directed to Holy Trinity Cemetery or to Masses. Mr. Spisak, of Hayward, Calif., died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 1999, in Parkview Health Care Center there. He was 89 years old on November 7, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a presser for Hart, Shafner and Marx Menswear in Chicago for 20 years. He attended Mt. Olive schools, was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Trinity church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was born in Mt. Olive, a son of John Lawrence, Sr., and Susan Slavik Spisak. Surviving is a brother, Joseph Spisak of Hayward. A brother, Mike Spisak and sisters, Mary Kropik and Anna Katchmar preceded him in death. Following the services Tuesday a lunch will be served to family and friends in the Holy Trinity basement by the women of the church. Services for John Lawrence Spisak, Jr., formerly of Mt. Olive, were held at 11 this morning in Holy Trinity Church there. The Rev. Father Larry Anschutz officiated with Dan Dragovich and Braden Grejtak as servers. Organist Ruth Zubal accompanied the church choir. Pallbearers were Dr. Jerome Katchmar, Frank Kropick, Dan Mancini, Charles Yancik, Ted Tomso and Ed Becker. Burial was in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Mr. Spisak, 89 of Hayward, Calif., died Thursday, February 4, in Hayward.

Spitznagel, Joseph H.

Services for Joseph H. Spitznagel, father of Bob J. Spitznagel of Litchfield, were held this morning in Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home, Auburn. Burial was in the Auburn Cemetery. Mr. Sptiznagel died Thursday, September 30, 1999, in St. John's Hospital. He was 70 years old on August 28. He was a mechanic for Narmont Machinery Company in Auburn for more than 30 years before he retired. He was born in Prentice, a son of Joseph H. and Elizabeth R. Newton Spitznagel. He married Delores M. Watkins in 1949 in Jacksonville. She survives. Surviving also are two other sons, Edward E. Spitznagel of Auburn, Donald Spitznagel of Chatham; a daughter, Brenda K. Wylder of Chatham; brother, Albert Lee Thomas of Concord; sisters, Patsy R. Abbott of Springfield, Donna J. Wester of Ashland; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Sportsman, Alma Iola

Services for Alma Iola Sportsman, of Taylor Springs, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Patton Memorial Home, Hillsboro, with the Rev. Bill Baughman of the First Baptist Church of Hillsboro officiating. Burial will be in Cress Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday in the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Mrs. Sportsman died at 4:35 this morning, Monday, February 8, 1999, in Hillsboro Hospital. She was 87 years old on June 10. She was a resident of Taylor Springs for 52 years and worked as a waitress before she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hillsboro and the Montgomery County Senior Citizens at Taylor Springs. She was born in Bismarck, Mo., a daughter of James and Amiela Croley Sisk, and graduated from high school there. She married Jim Sportsman on September 12, 1930, in Farmington, Mo. He died in 1975. Surviving are sons, Robby Sportsman and wife Linda of St. Louis, Walter Sportsman and wife Shirlee of Hot Springs, Arkansas; daughters, Pat McGee and husband Leonard of Granite City, Sue Henke and husband Norton of Panama, Sandra Lawson of Taylor Springs; 16 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were three brothers, John, Wesley and Rolla Sisk; five sisters, Mamie Diamond, Nell Hortz, June Knight, Hulda Martin, Jessie Castill; and three grandchildren.

Spriggs, Edna L.

Graveside service for Edna L. Spriggs, formerly of Honey Bend, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cedar Ridge Cemetery there. The Rev. Steve Revisky, of the Christian Church of Litchfield, will officiate. Family and friends will gather at Meinschein Funeral Home on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. to proceed to the cemetery. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Salvation Army. Mrs. Spriggs died at 6;30 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, 1998, in her home in Pasadena, Texas. She was 73 years old on June 25. She was a member of the Spirit of Life Church of God in Pasadena. She was born in Boulder, Colorado, a daughter of Rene C. and Lillie March DeMoulin. Her first husband, Claude Daugherty, died on August 16, 1956. She married John R. Spriggs on April 28, 1994, in Pasadena. He survives. Surviving also are sons, Claude Daughtery and wife Jane of LaMargue, Texas, Gary Daughtery of Dallas, Texas; step sons, Robert Spriggs and wife Patricia, Richard Spriggs and wife Jennifer of Pasadena, Kenneth Spriggs and wife Sandra of Baytown, Texas, Mark Spriggs of Texas; daughters, Gloria McDonald and husband Ernest of Booneville, Ark., Deborah Joyce and husband John of Port Lavaca, Texas, Terrie Boyd and husband Ed of Houston, Texas; step daughter, Cynthia Cook and husband Eddie of Charleston, Ind.; brothers, Frank DeMoulin of Litchfield, Chuck DeMoulin and wife Evelyn of California; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, David Daugherty in infancy; a brother, Clarence DeMoulin; sisters, Mary Stenzel, Effie Clotfelter, Opal Agee; a grandson, Claude Allen Daugherty and a great granddaughter, Heather Shabree Cady. Graveside services for Edna L. DeMoulin Spriggs, formerly of Honey Bend, was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cedar Ridge Cemetery at Honey Bend. Rev. Steve Revisky, of the Christian Church of Litchfield, officiated. Pallbearers were Terry Plowenan, Denny Daugherty, Jack Daugherty, Kenny Wayne Daughtery, Larry Honnie, David Daughtery, Allen Daughtery, Lester Robinson. Mrs. Spriggs, 73, died Wednesday, November 11, in her home in Pasadena, Texas.

Spudic, Joseph T.

Funeral Mass for Joseph Thomas Spudic, of Mt. Olive, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of the Ascension there by the Rev. Father Larry Anschutz. Graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Benld City Cemetery. Croatian Lodge speaker will be Matt Turcol. Friends may call on Saturday in the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Mt. Olive Ambulance Service. Mr. Spudic died at 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, 1999, in William Riley House, Munster, Ind. He was 86 years old on December 24, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was retired as a police officer from the East Chicago, Ind., Police Department. In his youth he worked for the Inland Steel Company in East Chicago. During his military service he served in five campaigns, including D-Day. He was a member of VFW Post 5790, CFU Lodge 217, East Chicago Police Lodge 59, Disabled American Veterans, Calument A.C. Old Tymers and the Mt. Olive Senior Citizens. He was a member, also, of the Church of the Ascension, Mt. Olive. He was born in Livingston, a son of Thomas and Dora Luketic Spudic, and graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago, Ind. He married Katherine Seketa on June 2, 1949, in St. Joseph's Church, Benld. She died January 17, 1999. Surviving is a brother, Steve Spudic of Hammond, Ind. Preceding him in death were a brother, John Spudic and a sister, Mary Konkoly. Following the services on Saturday a lunch will be served for family and friends in Ascension Hall by members of the Altar and Rosary Society.

Spudic, Katherine M.

Services for Katherine Marie Spudic, of Mt. Olive, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Becker and Son Funeral Home there with the Rev. Father Larry Anschutz officiating. Burial will be in Benld City Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to St. Jude's Childrens Hospitals. Mrs. Spudic died at 8:08 a.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 84 years old last February 17. She was a stenographer for DuPont Corporation in East Chicago, Ind., before she retired. She was amember of the Church of the Ascension in Mt. Olive and the church Rosary and Altary Society. She was also a member of the Croatian Federation Union Lodge 217, Benld. She attended the Springfield Business School for one year. She was born in Benld, a daughter of John and Marie Rauker Seketa, and attended schools there, graduating from Benld High School. She married Joseph Thomas Spudic on June 21, 1949, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Benld. He survives. Surviving also is a sister, Frances Goldasich of Granite City. Preceding her in death were brothers, John, Thomas and Nicholas Seketa and a sister, Mary Seketa. Following the services on Wednesday a meal will be served to family and friends in the Ascension Church hall by members of the Altar and Rosary Society. Services for Katherine Marie Spudic, of Mt. Olive, were held at 11 a.m. today in Becker and Son Funeral Home there. The Rev. Father Larry Anschutz officiated. Matt Turcol offered a prayer as speaker for the Croatian Federation Union Lodge 217, of which she was a member. Rosemary Messner was the pianist and soloist. Musical selectsions were "Amazing Grace," "In the Garden" and "Lay Your Hands." Burial was in Benld City Cemetery. Following the services members of the Church of the Ascension Altar and Rosary Society provided a meal for family and friends. Mrs. Spudic, 84, died Sunday, January 17, in St. Francis Hospital.

Spudich, Brian L.

Brian L. Spudich, son of Lee Spudich of Staunton, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. He was 36 years old on August 16. He had been a chef in San Francisco for several years and had moved back to the area, residing in Carlinville for the past year. He was born in Litchfield, a son of Lee J. and Winifred Urick Spudich. He married Sandy L. Hartley last February and she survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Samantha Jo of Carlinville; mother, Winifred Urick of Springfield; brother, Kevin Spudich of Springfield, Karen Spudich of Las Vegas; and grandmother, Barbara Spudick of Livingston. Heinz Funeral Home, Carlinville, is in charge of arrangements. The remains are to be cremated.

Spudich, Pete D.

Funeral Mass for Pete D. Spudich, of rural New Douglas, will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livingston, by the Rev. Father George Radosevich. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Lesicko Funeral Home, Livingston. Scripture service will be held at 5 p.m. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society Air and Heating Fund or the Sacred Heart Church Restoration Fund. Mr. Spudich died at 7:35 p.m. Monday, May 17, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. He was 88 years old on April 7, and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked in maintenance with Shell Petroleum Pipeline Company for 30 years and after retiring in 1967, he engaged in farming. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Livingston, life member of Staunton VFW Post 1241 and the Croatian Fraternal Lodge 46 of Benld. He was born in Livingston, a son of John I. and Sophia F. Zarr Spudich, and never married. Surviving are a brother, Joseph Spudich of New Douglas; sisters, Mary Hogan of Saunton, Helen Spudich of New Douglas, Lillian Courtney of Staunton; and many nieces and nephews. Others surviving include a sister in law, Nina Spudick of New Douglas. Preceding him in death were brothers, John Spudick Jr. and Andrew Spudich; a sister and a brother in infancy.

Stamer, Dwane S.

Memorial service for Dwane Stowe "Red" Stamer, formerly of Litchfield, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Plummer Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Breum, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church of Mt. Olive, officiating. Inurnment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. Friends may call on Wednesday in the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the service. The family suggests memorials be directed to St. John's Hospice. Mr. Stamer, of Springfield, died at 5:10 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 1999, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield. He was 66 years old on July 8, and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was associated with the family business, Stamer Implement Company, for many years. He later worked for the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs for five years and for Magnum Enterprise, an automobile battery distributorship in Springfield for seven years. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield and served on the church council for several years. He was instrumental in getting the Litchfield Memorial Pool built and was the first person to dive off the pool's high dive. He was also an honorary Kentucky colonel. He was a past president of the Mississippi Valley Farm Equipment Dealers Association, served on the board of directors of the National Farm and Power Equipment Dealers Association, and was a past member of the Litchfield Airport Authority. After graduating in 1951 from Litchfield High School, he continued his education at Western Illinois University, Macomb, and later attended Sangamon State University, Springfield, earning a bachelor's degree in business Administration in 1989. He was born in Mt. Olive, a son of Christian Gerhardt "Chris" and Alva Stowe Stamer. He married Wilma J. "Jo" Climer on December 31, 1955, in Gillespie. She survives. Surviving also are sons, Kirk R. Stamer of Tempe, Ariz., Greg Stamer and wife Debbie of Glen Carbon; brother, Jack Stamer of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Carol Bielefeld and husband, the Rev. Earl Bielefeld of Tempe; two grandsons, Christian Stamer of Tempe and Tyler Stamer of Glen Carbon. Memorial services for Dwane Stowe Stamer, formerly of Litchfield, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Plummer Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Breum, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church of Mt. Olive, officiated. Inurnment was in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. During the committal service military honors were provided by the Sangamon County Intraveterans Detail Squad. The flag was presented to Mrs. Jo Stamer. A luncheon was held at the family home following the services. Mr. Stamer, 66, died Saturday, August 14, in St. John's Hospital

Stanton, Berneice

Funeral arrangements for Berneice Stanton, of Donnellson, are pending in Patton Memorial Home, Hillsboro. Mrs. Stanton died at 5:12 this morning, Wednesday, November 3, 1999, in Hillsboro Hospital. She was 71 years old on December 20. She was a resident of Donnellson her entire life, graduating from Donnellson High School in 1944 and from Hillsboro High School in 1945. A daughter of Emery "Doc" and Ida Rogers Reeves, she married Floyd E. Stanton on November 4, 1950, in Wood River. He survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Beverly Dickerson of Sorento and a grandchild, Linsay Krummel of Sorento. Preceding her in death were brothers, Cloyd D., Hobart D., Edwin L. Reeves and a sister, Alpha Faye Lewey Memorial service for Berneice Stanton, of Donnellson, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in Patton Memorial Home, Hillsboro, with the Rev. James Howie officiating. Committal service will be for family only and held at a later date. The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Stanton, 71, died Wednesday, November 3, in Hillsboro Hospital. Her obituary was in Wednesday's paper.

Stark, Hazel

Services for Hazel Stark, of Gillespie, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Christian Church there with Arthur Roemer officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Gillespie. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Kravanya Funeral Home, Gillespie. Mrs. Stark died at 6:29 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 1999, in Gillespie. She was 75 years old on March 11. She was a waitress at The Gardens in Litchfield before she retired, and a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Gillespie. She was a daughter of Amos and Carrie Davis and wife of August Stark, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, David Stark of Goshen, Ind.; daughters, Barbara Madewell of Tampa, Fla., Mikealeen Miller of Colfax, Wis., Marilyn Goode and Patricia Young, both of Houston, Texas; brother, Jack Davis of Austin, Texas; sister, Marion Sullivan of San Francisco, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A grandchild, Christopher Madewell, preceded her in death.

Starks, Seth R.

Services for Seth Randall Starks, of Walshville, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Litchfield. Burial will be in Cress Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Plummer Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be directed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, of which he was a member. Mr. Starks died in Macoupin County at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 19 years old on November 8. He was employed by North American Pipe Company in Litchfield, working on assembly line production. He had previously worked for Cisco Steel in Carlinville. He was active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed working on engines and related mechancis. he was born in St. George, Utah, and graduated from the Metro Christian Academy in Donnellson. He never married. Surviving are his parents, Robert and Sandra McNew Cooley of Walshville; brothres, Tim Starks and wife Darla of Walshville, Troy Starks of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Lisa Starks of Carlinville. Preceding him in death were grandparents, James T. McNew, Laura McNew Blankenship, Sidney "Mac" and Ida Cooley. Services for Seth Randall Starks, of Walshville, were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Litchfield. Maurice Bruce and Earl Nail officiated. Dennis Nail was the organist. He accompanied Earl Nail while he sang "My Testimony" and the congregation while they sang "I Am a Child of God" and "Farewell All Earthly Honors." Pallbearers were Starks' brothers, Tim Starks of Walshville, Troy Starks of Overland Park, Kans., and also Lonnie Bruce of Hillsboro, Joshua DeBard of Nokomis, Byron McNew of Green ville, Larry McNew of Gainesville, Mo. and Gary Smith of Moro. During the graveside committal service in Cress Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro, the dedicatory prayer was given by Robert Cooley. Following the services a meal was provided for family and friends by the women of the church. Plummer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Starks, 19, died Tuesday, May 4, in Staunton Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Starr, Vadena L.

Vadena L. Starr, of Carlinville, died Monday, August 31, 1998, in Carlinville Hospital. She was 29 years old on June 19. She was a dental hygienist in the office of Dr. Steven Boente from 1990 to 1997. She graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1987 and from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in 1990. She was also a member of the Women's Golf League at Carlinville Country Club and a past secretary of the PTO. Mrs. Starr was born in Alton, a daughter of Robert Michael and Janet Stahl Timmermeier. She married Carl E. Starr in 1904 in the Carlinville United Methodist Church. He survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Ashley Starr; step sons, Ryan, Bryan and Nathan Starr; mother and step father, Janet Timmermeier and Bill Morgan, of Bunker Hill; brother, Jeff Timmermeier of Bunker Hill; sisters, Dawn Spickerman of Edwardsville, Stacy Coyne of Staunton; grandmother, Ruth Stahl of Palmyra. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in Davis Anderson Funeral Home, Carlinville. Services will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Carlinville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Carlinville.

Steck, William H.

Memorial service for William H. Steck, brother of Ann Holloway of Hillsboro, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sutton Memorial Home, Taylorville. Inurnment will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Mr. Steck, of Springfield, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, in St. John's Hospital there. He was 87 years old on November 28. He retired in 1976 from Memorial Medical Center where he was employed as a custodian. He was born in Rolla, Mo., a son of John and Mary Wallis Steck. He married Dorothy McDonald in 1932, in Mt. Auburn. She survives. Surviving also are a daughter, Helen Louise Presnell and husband Wayne of Pana; other sisters, Ellen Miller, Irene Elam and Emily Harrell, all of Taylorville; 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Stefani, Dominic

Services for Dominic Stefani, of rural Mt. Olive, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Becker and Son Funeral Home there with the Rev. Father Larry Anschutz officiating. Burial will be in Union Miners Cemetery. Friends may call from in the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Union Miners Cemetery. Mr. Stefani died at 6:22 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 1998, in Hitz Memorial Home, Alhambra. He was 91 years old on May 25. He was a welder for Verson Company of Chicago before he retired, and a member of the Mt. Olive Senior Citizens. He was born in Staunton, a son of Dominic and Madalena Rodegherio Stefani. He married Anna Slapak on August 31, 1935, in Chicago. She preceded him in death on December 19, 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Melba Monschein and husband Fred of Staunton; brothers, Frank Stafani of Ohio, Albert Stefani of Wheeling; two grandchildren, Tom Monschein of Chesterfield, Mo., Linda Monschein of Stockton, Calif., and two great grandchildren. A brother, Chris Stefani, preceded him in death.

Stein, Sister M. Inez

Sister M. Inez Stein, of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, died Friday, January 1, 1999, in the St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 90 years old on September 7. She worked in the business office of hospitals run by the order in Illinois and Wisconsin, including from July 1976 to October 1977, in St. Francis Hospital here. She then ministered in the Franciscan Apostolic Center until her retirement in 1992. Before coming to the Litchfield hospital, she was the provincial and corporate secretary of the order from 1970 to 1976. She was born in St. Louis, a daughter of Frank and Annie Froley Stein. She entered the congregation on February 2, 1942, and professed religious vows on October 4, 1944. Services were held today in the St. Francis of Assisi Church at the Motherhouse in Springfield. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.

Steinbaugh, Gladys M.

Services for Gladys M. Steinbaugh, of Gillespie, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church there with the Rev. Dennis Hill officiating. Burial will be in Gillespie City Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Kravanya Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be directed to the United Methodist Church Building Fund. Mrs. Steinbaugh died at 10:14 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 85 years old on February 25. She was co-owner of A&G Hardware in Gillespie before she retired. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gillespie, the "K" Group, United Methodist Women and the Royal Neighbors. She was born in Conesville, Iowa, a daughter of Ernest and Hazel Adams Criger. She married Arthur Steinbaugh on January 30, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa. He survives. Surviving also are a son, Gene Smalley of Gillespie; daughter, Judy Smalley of Kirkwood, Mo.; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Steinhauser, Clarence M.

Memorial service for Clarence Martin Steinhauser, of Mt. Olive, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Zion Lutheran Church there with the Rev. Terry Breum officiating. The remains have been donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Mt. Olive High School Band. Mr. Steinhauser died at 2:30 this morning, Thursday, March 11, 1999, in his home. He was 94 years old on February 27. He was a maintenance supervisor for Union Electric until he retired in 1975. He was a 51 year member of Gothic Masonic Lodge 852 in Belleville and a member of the Mt. Olive Senior Citizens. He was born in St. Louis, a son of Eugene M. and Emma Ulhorn Steinhauser, and attended St. Louis public schools. He was married three times. Both his first wife, Bernice Awalt, and his second, Marcella Dirks, are deceased. He married Margaret Mihelcic Pianfetti on November 19, 1983, in the Church of the Ascension in Mt. Olive and she survives. Surviving also are a step daughter, Anna Eccher and husband Greg of Mt. Olive; step son, Joseph Pianfetti and wife Mary of Hillsboro; brothers, Dr. Richard Steinhauser of Wilmore, Ky., Robert Steinhauser of Murphysboro; and five grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a son, James; a brother, Eugene Steinhauser; and a sister, Alma Steinhauser. Memorial service for Clarence Martin "Steiny" Steinhauser, of Mt. Olive, was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Zion Lutheran Church of Mt. Olive. The Rev. Terry Breum officiated. Maggie Eccher, a granddaughter, gave the eulogy. Organist Elda Prange accompanied Patsy Eccher, a granddaughter, as she sang "Softly and Tenderly." Following the service a meal was served to family and friends in the Zion Fellowship hall. Becker and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Steinhauser, 94, died Thursday, March 11, in his home. His remains were donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Mt. Olive High School Band.

Steward, Jr., Andrew J.

Services for Andrew J. Steward, Jr., of rural Carlinville, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Kravanya Funeral Home, Gillespie. Major Gary Van Hoesen, commanding officer of the Salvation Army, Alton, will officiate. Burial will be in Gillespie City Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 4547 of Gillespie. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Mr. Steward died at 9:47 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. He was 72 years old last February 8, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver for Kienstra Concrete Products of Wood River before he retired. He was born in Wood River, a son of Andrew J. and Mildred Roady Steward. His wife, the former Louise Bolton, survives. Surviving also are sons, Andrew J. Steward III of Raymond, James A. Steward of Carlinville, Ronald D. Steward Sr. of Dorchester, Robert W. Seward Sr. of Gillespie, Patrick L. Steward of St. Charles, Mo., Phillip M. Steward of Irving; daughters, Norma L. Carlsen of Litchfield, Mildred L. Hopper of Gillespie; brothers, Otis Steward of Seymour, Ind., James Steward of Wilsonville, Louis Steward of Cottage Hills; sisters, Anna Bell Hartley of Forrest Homes, Mildred Melenthin of Bunker Hill, Goldi Weber of Alton, Rea Hartley of Alton, Rose Markle of Bunker Hill, Nancy Steward of Bunker Hill, Theresa Kelly of Gillespie; 23 children and 16 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Juanita Nadine Steward, four sisters and two brothers.

Stewart, Annamae

Mass of the Resurrection for Annamae Stewart, of Mt. Olive, will be said at 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Trinity Church there by the Rev. Fathers John Sheahan, Larry Anschutz and John Paul Klein. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday in Queen of Heaven Cemetery at Hillside, Ill. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Becker and Son Funeral Home, Mt. Olive. Rosary will be said at 4:45 p.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the St. Francis Hospital Foundation or the Mt. Olive Ambulance Service. Mrs. Stewart died at 1:40 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital. She was 82 years old on September 28. In her later years, she assisted her brother, the Rev. Father John F. Sheahan in the parishes he served in the Springfield Diocese. She previously worked in the personnel department of Sears Roebuck and Company and also for the Peoples Gas Company in Chicago. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Church in Mt. Olive. She attended Help of Christians grade school in Chicago and graduated from Siena High School, Chicago, in the class of 1934. She was born in Chicago, a daughter of John Joseph and Mary Ellen Sharkey Sheahan. She married William R. Stewart on August 2, 1945, in the Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Chicago. He died January 15, 1965. Surviving besides Father Sheahan are several cousins, none from the local area. A sister, Rita Catherine Sheahan preceded her in death. Following the service Monday a luncheon will be served for family and friends in the Holy Trinity social hall by members of the Altar and Rosary Society. Mass of the Resurrection for Annamae Stewart, of Mt. Olive, was said Monday morning in Holy Trinity Church there. The Rev. Fathers John Sheahan, Larry Anschutz, John Paul Klein, O.M.V., William Hembrow, Peter Donohoe, Robert Heintz and Charles Mulerone concelebrated the Mass. Altar servers were Marco Dragovich and Jon Dragovich. Ruth Zubal, organist, accompanied soloist Rosemary Messner in "Our Lady of Guadalupe" and the Holy Trinity choir. Pallbearers were Charles Yanick, Dave Yancik Sr., Dave Yancik Jr., LaVern Thomas, Ted Tomoso, Clarence Zubal, Bill Frank and Mike Katchmar Jr. Burial was in Queen of Heaven Cemetery at Hillside. Following the services a lunch was served for family and friends in the church hall by the Altar and Rosary Society. Mrs. Stewart, 82, died Thursday, May 27, in St. Francis Hospital.

Stewart, Leona M.

Memorial service for Leona Margaret Stewart, of Panama, were held Tuesday in the Panama Methodist Church. Mrs. Stewart died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis. She was 77 years old. She was born in New Orleans, one of eight children. Her husband, Tom Stewart, survives. They spent the last 21 years as residents of Panama. Surviving besides her husband are daughters, Susan Cain of Fountain, Colo., Audrey Schmidt of Indianola, Iowa, Jan Stewart of Maryville, Calif.; brother, Arthur Michel of New Orleans; sister, June Compton of Walshville; and four grandchildren. Preceding her in death were four brothers and one sister.

Stewart, Robert R.

Services for Robert Reed Stewart, formerly of Mt. Olive, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Becker and Son Funeral Home there with the Rev. Ed Fogle officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive City Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday in the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be directed to the cemetery association. Mr. Stewart, of Hanna City, died at 4:07 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 1999, in Proctor Hospital, Peoria. He was 81 years old on April 15. He was a yeast maker at Hiram Walker in Peoria before he retired, and a member of Masonic Lodge 263 in Peoria. He loved gardening and working outdoors. Besides living in Hanna City and Mt. Olive, he also resided in Standard City for a time. He attended Nilwood Grade School and graduated from Girard High School in the class of 1935. He was born in Nilwood, a son of Albert Carl and Martha Elizabeth Cahill Stewart. He married Christina Lambia on July 29, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. She died October 22, 1980. Surviving are a daughter, Martha Miller and husband Bert of Hanna City; grandchildren, Todd Miller and wife Diana of Douglasville, Ga., Mark Miller and wife Barb of Auburn, Ga., Ross Miller and wife Sarah of Peoria; and five great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were brothers, Lawrence, Francis and Clarence Miller and a sister, Mary Tillie. Services for Robert Reed Stewart, formerly of Standard City and Mt. Stiehl, Nellie M.

Services for Nellie Mae Stiehl, of Mt. Olive, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Church there with the Rev. Terry Breum officiating. Burial will be in the New Douglas Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Becker and Son Funeral Home. Mrs. Stiehl died Sunday afternoon, June 13, 1999, in her home. She was 64 years old on August 4. She worked for Echlin Manufacturing in Litchfield from 1974 to 1986 and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Mt. Olive. She attended the Hill School in Sorento. She was born in Sorento, a daughter of August Bernhardt "Ben" and Bessie May Keeling Kruse. She married Robert Gene Stiehl on November 30, 1956, in the Zion Lutheran Church of Gillespie. They divorced June 10, 1984. He preceded her in death. Surviving are sons, Norman Lee Kruse and wife Karen of Litchfield, Rile Gene Stiehl of Mt. Olive; daughters, Vicky Mae Lane and husband Robert of Alhambra, Gail Ann Strum and husband Jeff of Chesterfield, Mo.; brothers, George Benny Kruse of Pawnee, Christy Leroy Kruse and wife Betty of Litchfield, Ervin Richard Kruse and wife Vi of Mt. Olive; sisters, Virginia Margarette Long Dubree of New Douglas; and four grandchildren, Nathan Scott and Tamara Sue Strum, Jeannie Marie and Benjamin Louis Kruse. Others surviving include a sister in law, Berniece Kruse White of Curran. Preceding her in death were a son, Scott Terry Stiehl; brothers, Halbert Harding Long, Bernhardt Amil Kruse and Elwald Kruse; sisters, Sophia Nancy Stockamp and Pearl Walch of Raymond. Services for Nellie Mae Stiehl, of the White City area of Mt. Olive, were held at 11 this morning in Zion Lutheran Church, Mt. Olive. The Rev. Terry Bruem officiated. Burial was in the New Douglas Cemetery. During the service the eulogy was given by her daughter, Vicky Mae Stiehl. Patsy Eccher was the soloist. Elda Prange was the organist. Musical selections were "Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Greg Eccher, Larry Stockamp, David Stockamp, Mike Pakovich, Kevin Kruse, Karl Kruse, Ron Allen and Mike Ahring. Following the services a lunch was served for family and friends in the Zion Fellowship Hall by the women of the church. Mrs. Stiehl, 64, died Sunday, June 13, in Mt. Olive.
