Mr. Gary Michael "Mike" Abernathy
Mike Abernathy, 59, of Sacramento, California and formerly of Concord, died Saturday, June 24, 2000 in California.
He was born July 14, 1940, in Concord, the son of Bill and Barbara Meyer Abernathy. He married Linda Hutchinson, and was later divorced.
He is survived by his mother of Concord; a son, Jason (wife Yolanda) of Augusta, Georgia; a daughter, Michelle Abernathy of Rohnert Park, California; a brother, Mark (wife Cathy) Abernathy of Bakersfield California; a sister, Jill (husband Bill) Johnson of Nokesville, Va and Chapin; two grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Abernathy was raised on the family farm near Concord, graduating from Triopia High School in 1958. He attended the University of Illinois, majoring in agriculture and journalism.
He worked briefly as a reporter for the Jacksonville Journal Courier, then moved to Sacramento, California. There, he worked as a reporter forMcClatchy Broadcasting. he later got involved in California politics, opening a legislative consulting firm and founding a Young Republican club. He workd for Rep.Vic Veysey, of California, in Washington D.C. for three years.
Upon his return to California, he twice ran unsuccessfully for the state assembly. He served on the Republican State Central Committee and helped run numerous political campaigns. He ran public affairs the California Council for International Trade, I San Fransisco at the time of his death.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Concord Christian Church with burial at Concord Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.on Thursday at the Williamson Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Arie Ackley
Arie Ackley, 86, of Jacksonville died Sunday evening, December 24, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born near Carmi the son of Ephraim Juel and Onea O’Neal Ackley. He married Edith Weasel on November 16, 1938 and she preceded him in death on May 2, 1989.
Mr. Ackley is survived by two daughters, Donna (husband, Edwin) Bruington of Jacksonville and Rosemary Blake of New Haven; two sons, Robert Ackley of New Haven and Donald (wife, Carol) Ackley of Roodhouse; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Herman and Wilburn and four sisters, Lora Harmon, Dora Striegel, Edith Harp and Arnola Willis.
Mr. Ackley had been employed at the Jacksonville Developmental Center as a supervisor in the Dietary Department, prior to his retirement. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle in Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Green view, Illinois. Friends may call after noon on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Tenant Council at Beecher High Rise.
Mrs. Leta Faye Alderson
Leta Faye Alderson, 96, of Chapin died Friday afternoon, October 6, 2000 in Chapin at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Virginia Alderson. She was born on February 25, 1904 in Chapin, the daughter of Robert and Della Darnell Fouts. She married Floyd Lee Alderson on August 5, 1925 in Winchester, and he preceded her in death on December 21, 1976.
Mrs. Alderson is survived by one daughter, Mardelle Lucas of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert (surviving wife Virginia Alderson of Chapin); four brothers, Carl Fouts, Bayne Fouts (surviving wife Marie of Mason City); Vernon Fouts, (surviving wife Frances of Jacksonville); and Clifford Fouts, (surviving wife Dorothy of Jacksonville); one sister, May Fouts Alderson, and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Alderson was a graduate of Chapin High School and a lifetime Chapin resident. She had been a member of Chapin United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 9, 2000 at the Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Chapin Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Visiting Nurses of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.
Mr. Robert Wayne Allen
Robert Wayne Allen, 74, of rural Jacksonville died early Monday morning, October 16, 2000 at his residence. He was born on December 14, 1925 near Stonington the son of Joseph and Mabel Oathout Allen. He married Maudie Wetzel in Old Stonington on December 26, 1947 and she survives.
He is also survived by four sons, Gerald (wife, Marian) Allen of Manassas, Virginia, Kenneth (wife, Kathy) Allen of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Donald (wife, Carolyn) Allen of Springfield, and Mark Allen of St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Richard (wife, Darlean) Allen of St. Petersburg, Florida, Loren (wife, Betty) Allen of Melbourne, Florida, Dale (wife, Helen) Allen of Leesburg, Florida, and Ray (wife, Nancy) Allen of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and three sisters, Lois (husband, Dan) Duquenne of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Norma (husband, Jack) Cook of Cerealean, Kentucky, and Nancy (husband, Larry) Bruce of Taylorville.
Mr. Allen was raised on a farm near Stonington, Illinois and graduated from Stonington High School. Mr. Allen earned his private pilots license at age sixteen. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and flew B-25’s during the war in the Philippines. After his discharge from the Air Corps, he was a civilian flight instructor and crop duster. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in three years and later earned a Master’s Degree from Illinois State University, as well as 36 hours of extra college credits. He taught high school Industrial Arts classes for 35 years, beginning at Staunton and Carlyle schools, before moving to Jacksonville and teaching at Jacksonville High School from 1960 to 1983. His retirement years were spent as a handyman in the community. He was a member of First Christian Church in Jacksonville where he served many church offices, taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon and Elder. He loved to travel with Maudie and visit family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2000 at the First Christian Church in Jacksonville. Graveside rites will be conducted at 12:30 at Old Stonington Cemetery near Stonington. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Thursday morning one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
Mr. Stephen Gerald Alred
Stephen Gerald Alred, 52, of Larkspur, Colorado and formerly of Waverly died on Monday, October 9, 2000 at his home in Boulder, Colorado. He was born on September 14, 1948 in Jacksonville, the son of Gerald and Geneva Ballard Alred. He married Hillary Meacham on August 20, 1983 in Boulder, Colorado and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Spencer and Seth, both at home, his mother and step-father, Geneva and Eugene Martin of Belle Vista, Arkansas, and two sisters, Joan (husband, Stuart) Brandon of DeKalb and Kathy (husband, Dr. John) Lin of Lake Forest.
Mr. Alred graduated from Waverly High School in 1966 and from Sangamon State University in Springfield. He co-managed Plum Creek Hollow Farm with his wife. On his farm, he managed a large horse-breeding program where he applied his expertise in technological advancements in equine breeding. He spent much of his career as an accomplished and well respected farrier. He was a devoted father.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to the Alred Children Education Fund.
Mr. Coy Ambrose
Coy Ambrose, 80 of Carlinville, formerly of Scottville died Friday, July 7, 2000 in Carlinville Area hospital in Carlinville. he was born September 26, 1919 in rural Scotville, a son of Curtis Harold and Ethel Hazel Dugger Ambrose. he married Velma M Harding on February 17, 1943 in Bowling green, Missouri and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons: Terry Wayne (wife Lana) Ambrose; of Florrissant Missouri; Davis Dean (wife Patty) of Carlinville; one daughter: Janet Kay (husband George) Dixon of Colchester, Illinois, four grandson: Todd and Matthew Dixon of Colchester, Illinois; Wade and Ryan Ambrose of Carlinville, one granddaughter; Lisa Schmiskie of O’Fallon, Illinois; one brother: Dale (wife Elsie) Ambrose of Modesto, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Coy farmed for his entire life in the Scottville area and was muti-township assessor of Macoupin County for twenty years. He served for many years on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Panther Creek Cemetery Board, Scottville Sportsman Club, Scottville Community Club, and was a member of Scottville Christian Church. He graduated from Scottville High School in the class of 1937.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2000 at Scottville Christian Church. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra. Burial will be in Panther Creek Cemetery, rural Scottville. memorials are suggested to Northwestern Rescue Squad or Scottville Christian Church.
Mrs. Mildred Edith Anderson (Givens)
Mildred Edith Anderson, 98, of Waverly died Tuesday evening, November 28, 2000 at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard, IL. She was born on April 8, 1902, the daughter of William and Ella Mae Givens. She married Clayton Anderson on February 15, 1922 and he preceded her in death on October 21, 1984.
Surviving Mrs. Anderson are: one son, Robert E. (wife, Millie) Anderson of Waverly; one daughter, Margaret L. Taylor of Aurora, Colorado; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Frank Givens; one sister, Lula Mac Givens and one nephew, Vernon Givens Auburn.
Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and very active socially, with memberships in the Appalonia Club; Household Science Club; Bridge Club, Pinochle Club, and the Waverly United Methodist Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2000 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly, IL. The family will meet friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Waverly Rescue Squad or to Pleasant Hill Village in Girard.
Lucie Ruth Andrews (Frech)
Lucie Ruth Andrews, 83, of Carrollton died at 5:40 P.M. on Wednesday
July 19, 2000 at St. John’s Hospital North in Springfield.
Born on Feb. 10, 1917 in Carrollton she was the daughter of the late
Herman and Hattie Crane Frech.
On Oct. 26, 1940 she married John B. Andrews in Alton and he preceded
her in death on May 2, 1979. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law:
David and Eileen Andrews of Taylorville, a grandson and his wife: Scott and
Tanya Andrews of Stanford, Calif. Several cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by a brother Stanley Frech.
Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church and
the Roses of Sharon Sunday School Class of the church.
Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral
Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 A.M. at
the Carrollton First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Carrollton
City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carrollton First Baptist
Church.
Mrs. Ada Mae Angle (Rainwater)
Ada Mae Angle, 76, of Carrollton died at 1:10 A.M. on Friday June 30,
2000 at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born in Rockbridge on April 25, 1924 she was the daughter of the late
Dink Rainwater and Alice Gibler.
On June 26, 1943 she married Donald Angle in St. Charles, Mo. and he
survives. Also surviving are: 2 daughters: Mrs. John “Sandy” Cooper of
Chatham and Mrs. Larry “Ada Renee ‘Babe’ “ Hubbard also of Chatham. 2
sons survive: Larry (Wife-Martha) Angle of Carrollton and Joe (Wife-Becky)
Angle of Carrollton. 10 grandchildren , 2 great grandchildren and a sister:
Eileen Ribble of Carrollton also survive.
Mrs. Angle was a member of Mt. Gilead Club and the Mt. Gilead Baptist
Church. She enjoyed decorating cakes for all occaisions.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Saturday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be held on Sunday at the funeral
home at 2 P.M. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Memorials may be
made to the American Diabetes Assn.
Dorie Ann Aper (Huffman)
Dorie Ann Aper, 30, of Virden and formerly of Lincoln and Waverly died Sunday (July 16, 2000 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield as a result of injuries sustained in a car, train accident.
She was born September 14, 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts the daughter of Gary and Beverlee Goodrich Huffman. She was a 1988 graduate of Waverly High School. She attended Lincoln Land Community College.
Ms. Aper worked as a Dispatcher for the Pawnee Police Department. Prior she had worked for the Alice Campbell Temporary Service in Springfield. She had been involved with ESDA and the American Red Cross in Lincoln. She was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her 2 children Brandon Aper of Virden and Kelsie Huffman of Waverly. Her parents Gary and Beverlee Huffman of Waverly A sister Kimberlee (husband Clinton) Turner of Modesto and a Brother Jeffrey Huffman of Waverly. Paternal grandfather Willis Huffman of Springfield. Maternal grandparents Mildred Goodrich of Eastlawn Meadow, Massachusetts and Cary and Joyce Marshall of Middleberry, Vermont. And several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday July 20, 2000 at the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will be in the Waverly East Cemetery.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Evelyn Ashburn (Ard)
Evelyn Ashburn, age 72, of Pearl, Ill. and formerly of Granite City, Ill. died 5:05 a.m. Saturday (December 2, 2000) at Illini Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill..
She was born January 17, 1928 in Denton County, Mo. daughter of the late Vance and Ella Halbrook Ard.
She married Richard L. Ashburn on December 30, 1950 in Pearl, Ill. and he survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Brenda) Conner and Mrs. Bill (Deborah) Moore both of Pittsfield, Ill. and Mrs. Kenneth (Sheila) Marable of Detroit, Ill.; one son, Rick Ashburn of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Meyers and Pauline Howell both of Salem, Mo.; one brother, Rex Ard of Rolla, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Inez Harber; and four brothers, Eddie, Ray, Melford, and Delbert Ard.
Mrs. Ashburn was a past employee at NESCO in Granite City, Ill. and had worked as a cook for Owens Care Center in Pittsfield, Ill.. She was also a Licensed Practical Nurse.
She was a member of the Pearl Full Gospel Church in Pearl, Ill. and loved to vegetable garden and cook.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Bobby George officiating. Burial will be in Green Pond Cemetery near Pearl, Ill.. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m.. Memorials may be made to the Pike County Health Department Visiting Nurses.
William Herbert Atkinson
William Herbert Atkinson, 93, of Winchester died Friday evening (September 22, 2000) at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
He was born September 4, 1907 in Scott County the son of William and Lena Ethel Wright Atkinson.
He married Emily Helen Rascher September 15, 1946 in Winchester. She preceded him in death December 21, 1998.
Mr. Atkinson attended country school in Scott County. He served in the US Army during WW 2 in the Pacific Theatre receiving 2 Bronze Battle Stars for Battles in New Guinea and Luzon.
He worked as a farmer, an independent truck driver, a mechanic for Campbell Ford and retired from the maintenance Department at Passavant Area Hospital. He was a member of the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Winchester where he served as a Deacon for many years.
Surviving are his children Bonnie Atkinson of Jacksonville, Ronald H. (wife Jane) Atkinson of Winchester, Patty Lynn Ward of Arenzville. 3 grandchildren Jeremy Young, Theresa Miller and Tonya Atkinson, 1 great grandson Josh Miller.
Also preceding him in death were brothers Robert Atkinson, Floyd Atkinson and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday September 25, 2000 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.
Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery where military graveside rite will be conducted.
Friends may call after 4:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorials can be made to the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church.
Patricia M. Bailey (Kender)
Patricia M. Kender Bailey, 61, of Jacksonville died early Monday morning, September 25, 2000 at her residence. She was born on October 5, 1938 in Pittsfield the daughter of Charles and Beula Huntley Kender.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Surratt (husband, Rudolph) Nyberg of Waverly; two sons, Jeff Surratt of Jacksonville and Charles Bailey of Springfield; three grandchildren, two brothers, Richard (wife, Bev) Kender of Pittsfield and Robert Kender of Quincy, and one sister, Betty Kender.
Mrs. Bailey was a cook in the Jacksonville area for 35 years, cooking at various restaurants including B.J.’s Café, Fernandes’ Tavern, and the Moose Lodge.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 at East Cemetery in Jacksonville. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Act Fund. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Leo L. Ballard
Leo Lloyd “Boonie” Ballard, age 81, of Roodhouse, died Friday
evening, Feb. 9, 2001 at his residence.
He was born Feb. 27, 1919 in Roodhouse, the son of Leo Ward and
Elsie Smock Ballard.
He married Geraldine “Gerry” Thompson on May 10, 1941 in New
London, Missouri and she survives.
He is also survived by one brother, Lawrence “Sam” (wife, Peggy)
Ballard of White Hall; and two sisters, Irene Williams of Alva, Florida and
Alice (husband, David) Weddersten of Roodhouse and many nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Thompson,
Cassie Guthrie and Rose Mary Ballard and four brothers, Gilbert “Gib”
Ballard, Edward Ballard, Smith Ballard and Ward Keith “Big Sam”
Ballard.
Mr. Ballard served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942-1945 and was
a member of the Roodhouse American Legion. He worked for many years
at the Roodhouse Envelope Company, and was a pipefitter for Standard Oil
Co. in Wood River. He later was a janitor at the White Hall Elementary for
ten years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the East Alton First
Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at the White
Hall Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Make A Wish Foundation.
The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of
arrangements.
