Lynn Riley Barker
Lynn Riley Barker, age 13, of Baylis, Ill. died Friday (July 7, 2000) at the scene of a two-vehicle accident in rural Adams County, Ill.
She was born October 21, 1986 in Quincy, Ill. daughter of Gregory Gordon and Linda Lee Dingerson Barker.
Surviving are her parents of Baylis, Ill.; one sister, April Barker of Baylis, Ill.; paternal grandparents Gordon and Joyce Barker of Payson, Ill.; maternal grandparents, Earl and Dorothy Dingerson of Payson, Ill.; paternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Schreacke of Payson, Ill.; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her paternal great grandparents, Jack and Clarissa Barker.
Lynn was an eighth grade student at Liberty Grade School in Liberty, Ill. and was a member of the Liberty Eagles Junior High Girls Volleyball Team and the Liberty Junior High Marching Band. She was a member of the Griggsville United Methodist Church in Griggsville, Ill. who loved swimming and hunting.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (July 15, 2000) at the Griggsville United Methodist Church in Griggsville, Ill. with Rev. David Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Baylis Cemetery in Baylis, Ill.. An informal visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Griggsville United Methodist Church in Griggsville, Ill.. Memorials may be made to the Liberty Junior High School Band or to the family. Skinner-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Griggsville, Ill. is in charge of the arrangements.
Rachel Marie Bates
Rachel Marie Bates, infant daughter of Frances Wicker, died shortly after birth Friday evening, September 15, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She is survived by her mother of Jacksonville; two brothers, Michael Bates and Thaddeus Wicker, both at home; maternal grandparents Steve and Hester Johnson of Jacksonville; maternal great-grandmother Eugena White of Jacksonville; maternal step-grandmother Susan Bates of Thayer, Missouri; paternal step-grandmother Dorothy Brown of Jacksonville, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at Jacksonville East Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sue Beard (Evans)
Sue Beard, 45, of Arenzville died Sunday evening, December 10, 2000 at St. John’s Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born on August 1, 1955 in Jacksonville the daughter of Ralph G. and Helen L. VanNoy Evans. She married Gerry Beard on June 18, 1977 at Jacksonville and he survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jeremy and Jerod Beard and Ginger at home, her father of Jacksonville, one brother, J.D. (wife, Gale) Evans of Fenton, Missouri and one sister, Katherine Schnake of Thomasville, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her mother.
Mrs. Beard worked with her husband at Beard Implement in Arenzville. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville. She coached and loved the cheerleaders at Triopia High School, participated in Ladies Golf at the Jacksonville Country Club, and was a member of the Passavant Hospital Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2000 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville, where the remains will be taken one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Arenzville North Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Williamson Funeral Home where the family will meet friends after 5 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, Triopia Boosters Club, or Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Arthur J. Benz
Arthur J. Benz, 89, of Carrollton formerly of Kampsville died at 4:30
A.M. on Wednesday Jan. 31, 2001 at Christian Hospital Northeast in St.
Louis.
Born in Kampsville on July 21, 1911 he was the son of the late Joseph
and Maria Marsching Benz.
He first married Theresa Corbett and she preceded him in death in Dec. of
1974. He later married Loretta Suhling on Nov. 8, 1975 and she preceded
him on June 27, 1992.
Surviving are 3 sons: James (wife-Mary) Benz of Quincy, Tom
(wife-JoAn) Benz of Kane and Daniel (wife- Sharon) Benz of Woodbine,
Md. A step daughter: Patsy Smith of St. Louis survives, as does 7
grandchildren: Sherri (Chuck) MacLean, Cindy (Jim) Keneipp, Laura
(Terry)Woodring, Emily Benz, Tim (Megan) Benz, Sue (Mark) Wild and
Kim (Paul) Brake, 10 great grandchildren, a brother Fred Benz of Carrollton,
and 2 sisters: Ann Halsey of Pittsfield and Marie Wyatt of Hardin. A dear
and special friend Alice Vandergriff of Carrollton also survives.
He was preceded in death by a son Paul Benz, an infant daughter Mary
Ellen Benz, 2 sisters: Sophia Klaas and Katherine Tepen, and 3 brothers:
Joseph, Aloys and Frank Benz.
Mr. Benz was a retired farmer and member of St. John’s Catholic
Church in Carrollton and a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge.
Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home
in Carrollton. Mass will be celebrated on Sat. at 10 A.M. at St. John’s
Catholic Church in Carrollton with burial in St. Anselm’s Cemetery in
Kampsville. Memorials are mentioned to : St. John’s Church, Green e Co.

Esther Louise Berry (Cory)
Esther Louise Berry, 93, died at Barton Stone Christian Home in Jacksonville
on Wednesday Sept. 20, 2000 at 9:11 A.M.
She was born near Kane, Ill. on December 10, 1906 to Myriam Augustus
Cory and Lilian Cole Cory. Her sister Edith died in 1987 at the age of 89.
Esther graduated from Kane High School in 1923 and taught school in
Kane before marrying William Lafayette Berry and moving to Texas in 1929.
She passed the civil service Examination and became Postmaster in
Joinerville, Texas where she served for 34 years and 11 months.
Upon her retirement in 1967, she moved to Jacksonville, Ill. where she
was treasurer for the local AARP and played in a kitchen band which
entertained Seniors. She travelled widely in the US and Canada and also
made trips abroad to London and Rome.
She is survived by her two children: William Augustus Berry of
Columbia, Mo. and Dixie Berry Garrison of Needville, Texas and three
grandchildren: Gayelynn Garrison Sneed, and Faye Lynn Garrison both of
Austin, Texas and Jaye Lynn Garrison Boyack of Surprise, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements by the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton
will consist of a graveside service at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in
Eldred on Sat. Sept. 23 at 1 P.M.

Foundation or the Barton Stone Christian Home.
Mr. Harold F. Besaw
Harold F. Besaw, age 79, of White Hall, died Thursday, Jan. 11,
2001 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born May 16, 1921 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of John
Theodore and Golda Lucille Schumacher Besaw.
He is survived by one daughter, Marsha M. (husband, James T.) Shaw
of Carrollton; three sons, James L. Besaw of White Hall, David P. Besaw of
Jerseyville and Dean (wife, Joan) Besaw of Jacksonville; five
grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by three brothers, Victor, Raymond and Earl Besaw; a half-sister, Ursaline
Bradshaw and two half-brothers, Fred and Bill Kaslick.
Mr. Besaw worked at Olin Corp. in Alton for 26 years, retiring in
1978. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, stationed
in the South Pacific for the majority of the war. He was a member of the
VFW in Roodhouse and a member of the Prairieland Heritage Museum in
Jacksonville.
Following cremation, private services will be held. Memorials are
suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart
Association. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall is in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Melvin Clyde Bettis
Melvin Clyde Bettis, 92, of Palmyra,Illinois, died Sunday evening, March 4, 2001 in Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, Illinois. He was born July 12, 1908 in Palmyra, Illinois, a son of George Washington Bettis and Dora Frances Shores Bettis. He married Dorothy Dee Fox on December 20, 1928 in Jacksonville, Illinois, and she survives.
Also surviving are: one daughter; Wanda June Ruyle of Orland Park, Illinois; three sons; Glen (wife Jean) Bettis of Palmyra, Illinois; Lester (wife Joyce) Bettis of Carlinville, Illinois; and Norman (wife Sandra) Bettis of Bloomington, Illinois; one sister; Rhea Bristow; of Palmyra, Illinois; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers; Otto; Clarence; Orville; Freddie; Welcome; Carl and Oren in infancy; and five sisters: Ora Pierson; Rae Crawford; Annie Hartsook; Grace Edminston; and Mary in infancy.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Farm Bureau and the First Baptist Church of Palmyra, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in Stults-Neece Funeral Home, 201 North Main Street, Palmyra, Illinois. Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra, Illinois. Edward Birdsell
Edward Birdsell, 92, of Jacksonville died Monday morning, September 25, 2000 at Jacksonville Convalescent Center. He was born on May 8, 1908, in Morgan County the son of Frank and Elizabeth Roberts Birdsell.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Rice.
Mr. Birdsell was a member of The Lord’s Congregation, and formerly a member Jacksonville Assembly of God. He spent his life helping others, working as a handyman and a painter. He enjoyed gardening and was known for sharing the produce from his garden.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Franklin Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday until the time of services. Memorials are suggested to The Lord’s Congregation Building Fund.
Mrs. Doris L. Birdsong (Blackburn)
Doris L. Birdsong, 79 of Jacksonville died Tuesday afternoon, August 22, 2000 at her daughter’s residence. She was born on February 21, 1921 in Rushville, the daughter of Elmer and Ada Peacock Blackburn. She married Carthel N. Birdsong on August 7, 1937 in Bowling Green , Missouri and he preceded her in death on March 18, 1979.
She is survived by one daughter, Patty (husband, Chuck) Griffin and one son, Ronald Birdsong both of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren, one sister; Ruby Cooper of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Gail, Vernon, Leslie & Wayne Blackburn and two sisters, Esther Agans and Zelma Florine Blackburn.
Mrs. Birdsong was a member of Rebekah Lodge #625 for over 50 years and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 25, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Verma Pauline Bishop
Verma Pauline Bishop, age 75, of White Hall, died Friday evening,
June 9, 2000 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
She was born Aug. 21, 1924 in Jacksonville, the daughter of George
A. and Leona Sample Mellor.
She married William Theodore Bishop on Aug. 12, 1940 in Bowling Green , MO and he preceded her in death on May 18, 1992.
She is survived by two daughters, Lolita Margaret Suttles of
Roodhouse and Judy Paulette Wyatt of Jacksonville; one son, William
Fredrick Bishop of White Hall; one stepdaughter, Mabel Jean Petri of
Peoria; one stepson, Nathaniel John Bishop of Carrollton; twenty-three
grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; seven great great
grandchildren; one brother, George Robert Mellor of Murrayville and one
sister, Julia Ellen Manning of Ft. Meyers, FL. She was preceded in death by
one stepson, Pink Keith Bishop; a son-in-law, Dustin Wyatt; one brother,
James Paul Mellor and one sister, Mabel L. Brown.
Mrs. Bishop was a member of the New Life Church in White Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the New Life
Church in White Hall with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Green field.
Family will meet friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to the American
Diabetes Association.
