John A. Goode Sr.
John A. Goode Sr., age 64, died at 11:15 A.M. on Tuesday November 21,
2000 at the Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
Born on July 9, 1936 near Wrights he was the son of the late Omer and
Starcy Stinnett Goode.
On June 9, 1957 he married the former Joyce Johnson in Pittsfield and
she survives. Also surviving are 3 sons: John (wife-Debbie) Goode of
Green field, Michael (his friend-Toni) Goode of Carrollton and Roger (wife
Lisa) Goode of Carrollton, 3 grandchildren: Jessica, John and Rachel Goode
and 2 step-grandchildren: Ricky and Brittney Hood, 2 brothers: Ben Goode
and Richard Goode both of Green field and 3 sisters: Gladys Cochran of
Green field, Linda Campbell of Green field and Dovie Skaggs of Chatham.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Rebecca Sue Goode , 2
sisters: Imogene Williams and Marge Range and 2 brothers: Charles and
Sonny Goode.
John farmed all his life near Wrights and in 1964 moved to Carrollton
where he became the owner of John’s Tavern. He was a member of the
Green e Co. Farm Bureau.
The family will meet friends after 1 P.M. Friday at the Carrollton City
Cemetery where graveside rites will be conducted at 2 P.M. Memorials may
be made to the American Lung Association. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home
in Carrollton.
Mr. Charles K. Gooding
Charles K. Gooding, age 63, of White Hall, died Sunday evening,
Oct. 15, 2000 at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1937 in Chapin, the son of Chester and Opal
Barfield Gooding.
He married Evelyn Schafer Mathews on Sept. 12, 1964 in Carrollton
and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Kenneth K. Gooding of White Hall;
two stepdaughters, Taya Young of White Hall and Dawn Pinkerton of
Ottomwa, Iowa; one stepson, Darren Mathews of White Hall; five
grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; one sister, Juanita Lang of Tulsa, OK
and three brothers, Donald Gooding of Morristown, IN; Al Gooding of
Shelbyville, IN and Robert Gooding of Carlinville. He was preceded in
death by one son, Jason Gooding and one brother, Chester Gooding.
Mr. Gooding was a mechanic for Stewart’s Texaco and later Scotty’s
Texaco Service and Ford’s Amoco in White Hall. He was a member of the
White Hall Sportsman’s Club and was of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18,
2000 at the White Hall Cemetery. The family will meet friends from
10:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White
Hall. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Mary Ann Graham (Ahern)
Mary Ann Graham, age 96, of White Hall, died early Sunday
morning, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Scott County Nursing Center in Winchester.
She was born July 19, 1904 near Jacksonville, the daughter of Dennis
and Agnes Jane Suter Ahern.
She married Kenneth E. Graham on March 8, 1941 in Bowling Green ,
Missouri and he preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Ray (wife, Maxine) Atkinson of White
Hall and Robert Eugene (wife, Mary) Atkinson of White Hall; one daughter,
Shonna K. Graham of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren;
sixteen great grandchildren; twelve great great grandchildren; one brother,
Clifford (wife, Wanda) Ahern of Jerseyville and one sister, Ruth Smith of
Cottage Hills. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lou
Thomas Eddy; two brothers, John and Clyde Ahern and one sister, Thelma
Ahern.
Mrs. Graham was a member of the White Hall First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at
the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial at the Pine Tree
Cemetery near Patterson. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of
services Saturday.
Mr. Fred C. Gray
Fred C. Gray, 74 of Jacksonville died Thursday evening, July 13, 2000 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on July 20, 1925 in Fairfield, the son of Leonard James and Esther Marie Black Gray. He married Marthajane Shaver on December 29, 1948 in Jacksonville. She preceded him in death on May 15, 1990.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol Ann Freesen of Jacksonville and Susan Jane (Husband, Andy) Winkelmann of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandsons and two granddaughters; one great granddaughter ; one great-grandson, one sister, Helenjane Pierce of San Antonio, Texas; two nephews and one niece.
Mr. Gray graduated from Minatare High School in Minatare, Nebraska in 1943. He attended Oklahoma A & M College, University of Illinois, College of Commerce, and Washington University in St. Louis. He owned and operated Grays Shoe Store on the square in Jacksonville from 1948 to 1965. He was employed by J.Capps and Sons, Ltd, starting in 1966 as a credit manager. He became Manager of Sales, Credit , and Advertising in February of 1973 and was elected to the Board of Directors as Assistant Secretary of the Corporation at that same time. After the closing of J. Capps and Sons, Mr. Gray became Office Manager of Bound To Stay Bound, and held that position until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Gray had been a member of the Jacksonville Area Industrial Development Corporation, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Art Association Board of Directors, Cancer Society Board of Directors, and participated in fund raising for the United Fund, Red Cross, YMCA, and the local colleges. He was a former member of the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club and Jacksonville Jaycees. He served one term as Alderman, 5th Ward and was a candidate for Mayor of Jacksonville in 1965.
Mr. Gray was proud to have served his country during World War II as a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 17, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial in Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon on Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from

Mr. Russell M. Gregory
Russell M. Gregory, 56, of Winchester died early Monday morning (September 4, 2000) at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born August 23, 1944 in Jacksonville the son of Carl and Imogene McLaughlin Gregory.
He married Susan McComber May 24, 1969 in Pittsfield.
Mr. Gregory was a 1962 graduate of Winchester High School. He also attended college in Ottawa, Kansas. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant, Engineers Company during the Viet Nam war. Mr. Gregory was employed by Illinois Valley Paving. He was Road Commissioner for Road District #4 in Scott County. He served on the Selective Service Draft Board.
He was a member of the Winchester American Legion.
Surviving is his wife Susan at home. 3 sons Scott (wife Julie) Gregory of Meredosia, Shane Gregory of Henderson, Kentucky and Yancey Gregory at home. His parents Carl and Imogene Gregory of Winchester and a granddaughter, Kailie Gregory.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday (September 6, 2000) at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester.
Burial will be in the Winchester City Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted.
Friends may call after 4:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Billy Joe "B.J." Gregory
Billy Joe “B.J.” Gregory, 69, of Jacksonville died Monday evening, November 20, 2000 at his residence. He was born on February 3, 1931 in Meredosia the son of Raymond O. and Pearl J. Floyd Gregory. He married Carolyn Rudisill on July 3, 1964 in Beardstown and she survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Joe D. Gregory and Ray Gregory, both of Jacksonville; three daughters, Cathy (husband, Allen) Reichert and April (husband, Andy) Coop, both of Jacksonville and Carolyn (husband, Brad) Hymes of Manchester; eight grandchildren, one brother, Richard L. “Pete” (wife, Colleen) Gregory of Jacksonville; and one sister, Rosemary (husband, Tommy) Rogers of Beaumont, Texas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Shelby Dan Gregory, and three sisters, Iris J. Bettis, Bernadine Joyce Gregory, and Shirley Ann Gregory.
Mr. Gregory was a well-known restaurant operator in Jacksonville. He owned and operated B.J.’s Restaurant in Jacksonville until his retirement in 1993. His wife has continued to operate the business.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2000 at Williamson Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Maxine C. Hall (Conroy)
Maxine C. Hall, age 85, of Pittsfield, Ill. died Sunday morning (October 8, 2000) at the Pittsfield Manor Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Ill..
She was born October 24, 1914 in Pike County, Ill. daughter of the late Earl V. and Hallie M. Crowder Conroy.
She married Wilson Hall on February 12, 1936 in Jacksonville, Ill. and he preceded her in death on June 11, 1997.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Jake (Wilma) Johnson of Pittsfield, Ill.; two sons, Thomas Eugene Hall and wife Janet of Orange Park, Florida and Wyman Clay Hall of Troy, Ill.; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Carr of Pittsfield, Ill.; one brother, Gerald Conroy of Chillicothe, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, her twin Aileen Ellis.
Mrs. Hall was a 1932 graduate of Higbee High School in Pittsfield, Ill. and was a former employee of the old Brown Shoe Company in Pittsfield, Ill.. She aided her husband as bookkeeper in their business, W.W. Sanitation that operated in both Jersey and Pike counties for many years. While living in Jersey county, she was an active member of the Jerseyville Chamber of Commerce in Jerseyville, Ill.. She was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday (October 11, 2000) at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Ill. with Rev. Clay Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Pittsfield First Christian Church or to the Pike County Cancer Transportation Fund c/o the funeral home.
Mr. Robert D. Hamm
Robert D. Hamm, 81, of Jacksonville died Tuesday afternoon, September 26, 2000 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on January 14, 1919 in Jacksonville the son of W. Cass and Lela Jane Davis Hamm. He married Betty Overbey on July 4, 1948 in Beardstown and she survives.
Mr. Hamm is also survived by three daughters, Barbara Jane (husband, Dan) Lenihan of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Janet Hamm of Austin Texas, and Nancy (husband, Michael) Miner of Naperville; five grandchildren, and one sister, Marthajane Hapke of Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Mr. Hamm was a 1940 graduate of Illinois College, where he played tennis all four years, winning conference championships in both singles and doubles. He played basketball in high school and at Illinois College. Mr. Hamm joined the United States Army soon after graduation from Illinois College, and served 1940-46. While in the Army, he coached the Fort Kamehameha basketball team. Following the war, Mr. Hamm returned to Jacksonville and joined his father in the operation of Hopper and Hamm Furniture on the square. In 1972, he built a store on West Morton Avenue, and in 1985 sold Hamm’s Home Furnishings to Cohen’s of Peoria.
Mr. Hamm was an avid tennis player and golfer throughout his life. While at Illinois Collge in 1938, he won the Little 19 Singles Tennis Championship and, along with partner Elmer Lukeman, won the Little 19 Doubles Tennis Championship that same year. He won several City Tennis Championships, both in singles and doubles, most recently pairing with Rick Pfau to take the City of Jacksonville 40 And Over Doubles Championship. He was a member of both the Illinois College and Jacksonville High School Halls of Fame. Mr. Hamm is a former Illinois College Alumni Trustee and was faithful in his support to Illinois College. He served as President of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce in 1967 and in 1968; was a longtime member of the Contact Club and recently Jacksonville Main Street, and was recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Circle of Excellence Award in 1996. Mr. Hamm was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2000 at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will meet friends following the service. Memorials are suggested to Illinois College or MacMurray College. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lorna H. Harbin (Meyer)
Lorna H. Harbin, 90, of Arenzville died Saturday evening, September 30, 2000 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born on September 21, 1910 in Perry, Oklahoma the daughter of John H. and Bertha Kingston Meyer. She married Roy G. Harbin September 11, 1929 in Beardstown and he preceded her in death January 4, 1992.
She is survived by one daughter, Dolores (husband, Jack) Miller of Beardstown; three sons, Gilbert Harbin of Arenzville, Vancil Harbin of Jacksonville, and Wendell (wife, Jeanette) Harbin of Beardstown; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Lambert Meyer of Barefoot Bay, Florida and Emil (wife, Josie) Meyer of Vancouver, Washington. She was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Harbin; one brother Harold Meyer (surviving wife Yolanda of Rock Island, Illinois); and one sister, Dorothy McGinnis.
Mrs. Harbin owned and operated the Village Inn Restaurant in Arenzville in the 1960’s. She later cooked at Meline’s Nursing Home in Jacksonville and worked as a custodian at Trinity Lutheran School in Arenzville. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville, the Ladies Aid, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Bread of Love volunteer until just recently. She especially enjoyed baking pies and babysitting the children of Arenzville.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arenzville with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Larry E. Hardwick
Larry E. Hardwick, 56, of South Jacksonville died Saturday evening, September 16, 2000 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on July 16, 1944 in Alton, Illinois the son of Harvey E. and Emma B. Evans Hardwick. He married Marilyn Hopper on July 30, 1965 in Jerseyville and she survives in South Jacksonville.
He is also survived by two sons, Michael (wife, Penny) Hardwick of Jacksonville and Jeffrey (wife, Tonya) Hardwick of South Jacksonville; one daughter, Lisa Hardwick of Jacksonville; five granddaughters, three sisters, Marsha (husband, Calvin) Lesher of Chino, California, Diana Julius and Linnea Cunningham, both of Springfield; and his mother-in-law, Edna Hopper of Jerseyville.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Rodney Hardwick; one sister, Sylvia Dodd; and his father-in-law, Glenn E. Hopper.
Mr. Hardwick worked for Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville from 1965 to 1988. He went on to work as sales manager at Liberty-Olds-Cadillac before becoming manager of Spradlin Home Sales in Springfield. He served in the United States Marines for three years, following his high school graduation. Mr. Hardwick enjoyed working on and restoring old cars, with a recent interest in collecting die-cast scale-model cars.

Mrs. Tammy Renee Hardwick (Hendrickson)
Tammy Renee Hardwick, age 35, of Hillview, died Monday morning,
Nov. 27, 2000 at the home of her parents, following a long illness.
She was born Feb. 17, 1965 in White Hall, the daughter of Keith E.
and Juanita M. Monroe Hendrickson and they survive in White Hall.
She married Michael C. Hardwick on April 6, 1984 in White Hall and
he survives.
She is also survived by one son, Michael Allen Hardwick of Hillview;
one sister, Tonda (husband, Tony) Anthony of White Hall; her grandmother,
Ilda I. Monroe of White Hall; and several nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert Keith and Wanita
Hendrickson and William Monroe.
Mrs. Hardwick graduated from North Green e High School in 1983
and worked as a secretary for Keith’s Automotive in White Hall. In 1991,
she became a teacher’s aid at Garrison School in Jacksonville and worked
there for 7 years. She then was the bookkeeper for her and her husband’s
trucking company until her illness prevented her from working. She was a
very active member of the New Life Church in White Hall, where she
served as a Sunday school teacher and drove the church bus. She enjoyed
singing at church and at special functions. She was a volunteer at church
camp where she oversaw the nursery and always assisted in any activities
that she could.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at the New Life
Church in White Hall with burial in the White Hall Cemetery. The family
will meet friends from 4:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires
Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to the New Life
Church.
