RICHARD METCAlFE
STERLING - Richard Metcalfe, of Sterling died Friday April 23, 2004 at CGH Medical Center. He retired from Unit 5, Sterling in 1986 as a school teacher and principal.
Mr. Metcalfe was born July 15, 1927 in Canton, the son of Wendell and Louise (Luker) Metcalfe. He graduated from Canton High School in 1945. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1945-1946. He married
Estella Schnell on September 5, 1948 in Canton. He attended Illinois State University at Normal and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and in 1956 earned a Masters Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. He taught at Lee Center Grade and High School from 1950-1957, at Challand Junior High School from 1957 – 1962 and also served as assistant principal from 1961 – 1962. He was principal at Lincoln School from 1962 – 1969, also at Franklin School from 1968 - 1969 and at Jefferson School from 1969 – 1986.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sterling, Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society (charter member), United Way Chairman (education division), co-chairman Sterling Sesquicentennial Committee, Sterling-Rock Falls Transportation Committee, Gyros, Illinois Principals Association, and CGH Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include his wife, Estella; two sons, Jeffrey (Laura) Metcalfe of Mesa, AZ and David Metcalfe of Decatur; and two grandsons, Andrew Tronick and Brennan Metcalfe.
He was preceded in death in 2001 by a daughter Carole Tronick..
Funeral Services will be at 10 AM, Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the Schilling Funeral Home, with the Reverend Ken Zuithoff, pastor of Bethel Reformed Church, officiating. Burial with military rites will be at 2:30 PM, Tuesday at Greenwood cemetery, Canton, IL.Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the Sterling Schools Foundation.
CLARENCE LELAND SMITH
STERLING - Clarence Leland Smith, 80, died unexpectedly Friday, April 23, 2004. He was employed by the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Company in the wire department.
Mr. Smith was born February 25, 1924 in New Bedford. The son of William A. and Kathryn (Tully) Smith. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Europe. He married
Faye I. Fitts on November 22 1947 in Rock Falls. She preceded him in death on August 10, 1993. He enjoyed reading and sports. He was a member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Mike (Karen) Smith of Freeport and Douglas (Paulette) Smith of Montgomery, AL; two sisters, Margaret Glassburn of Tampico and Evelyn (John) Egan of Sterling; one brother, Lawrence Smith of Sterling and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn and three brothers, Ivan, William and Ralph.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Rock Falls United Methodist Church with the Reverend Larry Thomson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.

Magdalena "Lena" Puentes Lerma
Sterling -Magdalena "Lena" Puentes Lerma, 75, 703 West 12th Street, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at her home. She was employed as a Technician for Dixon Developmental Center.
Mrs. Lerma was born March 8, 1929 in San Benito, TX, Daughter of Leandro G. and Ventura Aguilar Puentes.
Survivors include a daughter, Alma (Ronald) Lilly of Sterling, 2 sons, Arnulfo Rolando of Sterling and Adam Ruben of San Benito, TX, 3 brothers, Narcisco (Irma) Puentes of Sterling, Adan Puentes and Robert (Lucy) Puentes both of Corpus Christi, TX, 2 sisters, Eva Gallegos of Sterling and Vina (Luciano) Suarez of Independance, LA, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother Mario Puentes and two sisters Solia Olade and Eduvina in infancy.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday April 26, at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito TX, . Burial will be at the Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito TX. Visitation will be from 2-5 PM, Wednesday, April 21, 2004 and service starting at 5 P.M. at the Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispania Getsemani Church in Sterling, IL, with Reverend Carlos Jimenez officiating.

DORIS E. CISKETTI
NAPERVILLE - Doris E. Cisketti, 85, 208 W. Martin Rd., Naperville, formerly of Sterling, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at HCR Manor Care, Naperville, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Mrs. Cisketti was born December 7, 1918 in Sullivan, IN, Daughter of Benjamin Thurman and Jessie (Weathers) Cox. She married
Ralph Joseph Cisketti, Sr. on July 29, 1940 in Clinton IA. He preceded her in death on January 12, 1991. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Sterling.
Survivors are a son, Ralph J. Cisketti, Jr. of Muscatine, IA, two daughters, Kathryn (Lawrence) Gaskill of Dixon, IL, Carol (Randy) Cherry of Aurora, IL, a brother, Jack (Deborah) Cox of Watertown, NY, a sister, Dorothy (Delmar) Beight of Indianapolis, IN, eight grandchildren David, Eric and Marci Cisketti, Joseph, Matthew and Jennifer Gaskill, Daniel and Kimberly Cherry, and one great-grandchild Sabrina Cisketti.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services will be held at Schilling Funeral Home on Tuesday July 13, at 10:30 with pastor Scott Wade of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to Heartland Hospice.
DUARD M. WOLFE
Duard M. Wolfe, 91, passed away Thursday morning, July 8, 2004 at his home. He was employed in the drawing room at Northwestern Steel & Wire for 48 years.
Duard was born August 2, 1912 in Avalon, MO, the son of Fred and Dell (Kern) Wolfe. He came to Sterling in 1936 and married
Kathryn Yeager on March 30, 1940. He was an active member of Moose Lodge #726 Sterling and the Broadway United Methodist Church. He was an avid ballroom dancer.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; one daughter, Lyn Kay Quinnan; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Wolfe; a sister, Virginia Osgood and a brother, Gene Wolfe, both of Sterling; three grandsons; 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was a son D. Lee Wolfe, one sister and one brother.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, July 12, 2004 at the First United Broadway Methodist Church with Reverend Christine Gilbert, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Sunday, July 11, 2004 at the Schilling Funeral Home.

SHIRLEY A. BELL
Rock Falls - Shirley A. Bell, 75, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at her home. She had owned and operated Shirl’s Ceramics for several years in Rock Falls.
Shirley was born July 4, 1929 in Peru, IL, Daughter of Lloyd and Leona (Alberts) Palmer. She married
Gene Bell July 11, 1948 in Rock Falls, he survives. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and Kings Daughters and enjoyed crewel needle point.
Survivors include two daughters; Cathy Ann (Mike) Quick of Woodstock, GA, and Christy (Don) Schick of Rock Falls, IL, two sons; Gary (Vicki) Bell and Larry (Chandra) Bell of Rock Falls, 9 Grandchildren, four great grandchildren 3 sisters; Jean Pleskovitch, Marilyn Appenzeller both of Rock Falls, and Carol (Ray) Carlson of Sterling, IL, .
She was preceded in death by one son Ronald Allen Bell.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday July 7, 2004 at Schilling Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mennonite Section of Riverside cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Hospice of Rock River Valley or Whiteside County Home Health Care .
CLARA E. MEINERS
STERLING - Clara E. Meiners, 85, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Coventry Village. She worked at Lawrence Brothers in Sterling and I.C. Cooling.
Mrs. Meiners was born July 20, 1918 in Morrison, the daughter of William and Lula (Howe) Farwell. She graduated from Morrision High School in 1936. She married
Karl Meiners on June 22, 1946 in Sterling. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1988. She was a member of Coleta United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, David Meiners of Morrison, Dennis Meiners of Rock Falls, Dana (Theresa) of Sterling; a daughter-in-law, Cassandra Meiners; two sisters, Barbara (Joe) Blevins of Plattville, AL, Darlene Schoaf of Deer Grove; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were a daughter, Faye, in infancy, a son, Dale, two brothers, William and Jay, and a granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 10 AM, Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, with Reverend Polly Klimson, Pastor of Coleta United Methodist Church, officiating. There will be no visitation.
A memorial has been established.
JUDITH L. RABE
STERLING - Judith L. Rabe, 58, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at her residence. She was employed as a Sales Analyst at Lawrence Brothers for sixteen years.
Mrs. Rabe was born January 5, 1946 in Ferndale, Michigan, the daughter of Melvin Welch and Bernice Moser. She married
Donald Rabe on April 26, 1986 in Manitowoc, WI. She was a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sterling and a volunteer at CGH Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Donald of Sterling; two daughters, Shelly Gartzke of Oconomowoc, WI and Kari Schumacher of Denmark, WI; one step-daughter Donna (Matthew) Hayford of Rochester, WI; one son, Bill (Cindy) Gartzke of Aurora, CO; one step-son, Mark (Cheryl) Rabe of Dallas, TX; her mother, Bernice Kowalec of Glendale, AZ; three sisters, Peggy (Duanne) Glenn of Glendale, AZ, Geri (Carl) Browning of Phoenix, AZ and Shirley McNeeley; one brother, Larry (Mary) Welch of Saganaw, MI; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial services will be held at 7 PM, Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Joseph Cassady, Pastor of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sterling, officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7, Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.

Mary H. Butterfield
Mary H. Butterfield, 93, of 612 N. St. Mary’s Road, and formerly of LaGrange IL died Sunday, June 20, 2004.
Mary H. Butterfield was born September 24, 1910 in Chicago, the daughter of Joseph Hustava and Susanna Jarabak. She was married
to Phillip A. Butterfield in Chicago. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1974. Mrs. Butterfield was a bank teller at Harris Trust and the LaGrange State Bank before her retirement.
Mrs. Butterfield was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in LaGrange. She was a long time member of the Questors Antique Club. She enjoyed oil painting and antique collecting.
She is survived by her two sons, Reverend Robert and Mrs. Keiko Butterfield formerly of Sterling, and Dr. Bruce A. Butterfield of Plattsburgh, NY; two sisters, Emily Gump of Mountain Home, AR, and Bess Breitweiser of Highland, IN; and three grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Anne Pointel.
There will be no visitation or funeral services. Arrangements were completed by the Schilling Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to Rock River Alzheimer’s Association.
