Rachel Elizabeth Phillips
March 20, 1918 – January 3, 2005
Rachel Elizabeth Phillips suddenly passed away Monday, January 3, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA, after suffering a massive stroke. She died peacefully with her husband, children, and grandchildren at her side. Rachel and Hugh were in California visiting their daughter to celebrate Christmas. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Hugh Martin Phillips and their three children; Carol Ann Walicki (Stan) of Mequon, WI; Jim Phillips (Marie) of Fort Collins, CO; and Mary Kay Groth (Kenn) of Los Gatos, CA; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and her brother Elmer Fortner (Jo) of Freeport, Illinois
Rachel Elizabeth Fortner was born on March 20, 1918 in Freeport, Illinois to Frank and Maude Lapp Fortner. She married
Hugh Martin Phillips September 2, 1937 at First English Lutheran Church in Freeport. Rachel graduated from Freeport High School in 1934, and attended Normal Teachers College in Normal, Illinois. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Sterling, where she served as treasurer, Diaconate Board Member, and choir member. She was a member of CGH Medical Center Auxiliary as an active volunteer and also served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army Auxiliary. Rachel retired from Central National Bank in 1982 after 25 years of service in Consumer Credit. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband Hugh, visiting her grandchildren, doing community service, and as always corresponding with those she loved. Rachel will be remembered for her love of homemaking and gift of hospitality.
A memorial has been established at First Baptist Church of Sterling and the Salvation Army Auxiliary.
Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 PM Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the Schilling Funeral Home 702 First Avenue, Sterling. Services will be held on Monday, January 10, at 11:00 AM, First Baptist Church, 1705 Sixth Avenue, Sterling. She will be laid to rest at Grandview cemetery, Cedarville, Illinois.
LAURA ALBER
STERLING - Laura Alber, 97, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Sterling Pavilion.
Mrs. Alber was born January 31, 1909 in Eustis, NE, the daughter of William and Louise (Ricker) Holbein. She married
Albert P. Alber March 7, 1931 in Lincoln, NE. He preceded her in death on October 8, 1988. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She loved her family and enjoyed gardening, cooking and black angus cattle.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (John) Banks, one son, Albert (June) Alber; five grandchildren, Bethany (John) Banks Lorenz of Evansville, IN, Michael (Kathy) Banks of Sterling, Jason (Lori) Banks of Garden Plain, William (Carol) Alber, Eddie Alber, both of Sterling, and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers, and two sisters in infancy.
Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Henrietta Milner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be 12-1:15 PM, Tuesday, March 7 at the church.
A memorial has been established to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
CHARLES L. SPEAKER
STERLING - Charles L. Speaker, 89, died Sunday, February 26, 2006 at CGH Medical Center. Charles Speaker was a newspaper correspondent for the Rockford Register Star from 1945 until his retirement in 1982. He covered the local news and wrote feature stories about the Sterling and Rock Falls area. Beginning in 1955 and throughout the sixties, he also served within the court system as Justice of the Peace, Magistrate and Deputy Clerk.
Charles Leo Speaker was born July 8, 1916 in Beardstown, IL, the son of Omer and Rhoda Bowyer Speaker. He married
Elizabeth “Betty” Gamber in Myerstown, PA on July 15, 1945. Charles Speaker served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sterling.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Thomas (Cathy) Speaker of Cedar Falls, IA and William (Mary Beth) Speaker of Sarasota, FL; four grandchildren, Delicia Speaker Vaughn of Cedar Falls, IA, Elizabeth Speaker of Missoula, MT, Stephanie Speaker of Cedar Falls, IA, and Megan Speaker of Sarasota, FL; also surviving are a niece, Jan (Bob) Prescott of Sterling; a nephew and several nieces, out of town. Charles loved his family. He was interested in local, national, and world events.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Alberta Utter and two brothers, Donald and Wilbur Speaker.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Suedmeyer, pastor of First Congregational Church of Sterling officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery in Dixon. Visitation will be from
5-7 PM Wednesday evening at the Schilling Funeral Home, in Sterling.
A memorial has been established to Sauk Valley Community College.
DARRELL L. JONES
STERLING - Darrell L. Jones, 36, of Sterling, died Monday, February 20, 2006. He was employed by Sauk Valley Newspapers as a printer.
Darrell was born December 22, 1969 in Pasadena, CA. The son of Scott E. and Lois (Wilkins) Jones. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Sterling.
Survivors include two sons, Cordeiro Jones of Rockford and Ethan Jones of Rock Falls; his fiancé, Sabrina Johnson of Sterling; his step-mother, Esther Jones of Sterling; four sisters, Deborah Bedford of Rockford, Margaret Adams of San Bernardino, CA, Sherry Andrews of Fontana, CA, and Darlene Wilkins of CA; one brother, Rene Wilkins of CA; and a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Friday, February 24, 2006 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Sterling, with the Reverend Ronald Alexander, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be from 11-1 PM Friday at the church.

Leslie C. Richter
MILLEDGEVILLE - Leslie C. Richter, 77, of Milledgeville, a long time farmer in the Milledgeville-Polo area, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at his home.
Mr. Richter was born September 27, 1928 in Kewanee, the son of Walter and Anna (Manthe) Richter. He married
Phyllis Wiens Young on March 3, 1954 in Coleta. He was known for his creative ingenuity and was respected for his farming skills. He was a very caring neighbor who was always ready to offer help. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities, and sharing his garden produce with neighbors and friends.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marseyne (Bill) Snow of Oregon, Sharon (Chris) Worley of Louisville, KY; a son, Myron (Lisa) Richter of Milledgeville; two sisters, Helen Freberg, Phyllis Elliott, both of Kewanee; a brother, Dale (Jane) Richter of Atkinson; and seven grandchildren, Katherine (Michael) Hull of South Bend, IN, Emily (Scott) Ohms, Pearl City, John Richter of Milledgeville, Angie and Alycia Snow of Oregon, Nicholas and Jennifer Worley of Louisville, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Randy; two sisters, Berniece Martin, Florence Kipp and one brother, Elmer Richter.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 18, 2006 at the Reformed Mennonite Meeting House. Burial will be at the Reformed Mennonite cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7, Friday, February 17, 2006 at the Schilling Funeral Home.

DARRELL M. HUBBARD
COLETA - Darrell M. Hubbard, 79, of Coleta died Thursday, February 9, 2006 at his home after a short illness. He owned and operated Hubbard Grocery and Meat Locker in Coleta and was Genesee Township Road Commissioner for over 25 years, retiring in 1997.
Mr. Hubbard was born September 9, 1926 in Milledgeville, the son of John Q. and Luella W. (Garwick) He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII. He married
Doris L. Frankfother on July 1, 1950 at Doris’s home in Coleta. He was a member of the United Brethren Church in Christ where he served many years on the Administrative Board. Over the years, he served on the Coleta Volunteer Fire Dept. and Coleta Sportsmen’s Club. Darrell and Doris also managed Coleta Post Office for 25 years.
Survivors are his loving wife, Doris; four children, Don (Denise) Hubbard of Milledgeville, Dan (Kathryn) Hubbard of Aurora, Doug (Lori) Hubbard of Coleta, Dianna (Douglas) Johnson of Wheaton; two sisters, Deloris Smith of Morrison, Barb (Larry) Clark of Rock Falls; a brother, Robert (Lula) Hubbard of Coleta; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Jill) Hubbard, David Hubbard, Nicholas (Alisha) Hubbard, Jared (Jennifer) Hubbard, Nathan Hubbard, Andrew Hubbard, Dana Hubbard, Darron Hubbard, Ethan Johnson and two great-grandchildren, Claire and Meredith Hubbard.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Hubbard of Sterling and John R. Hubbard of Coleta
Services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Coleta United Brethren Church with Reverend Wilmer Houck officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be 4-7 PM, Friday, at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.

Laura Lou Bell
STERLING - Laura Lou Bell, 92, died Monday, February 6, 2006 at CGH Medical Center. She was a retired LPN for Oral Roberts University Village, St. John's Hospital, and Leisure Village Nursing Home in Tulsa, OK.
Laura was born March 1, 1913 in Palmer, NE, the daughter of William Franklin and Jessie Amanda (Stewart) Adams. She attended the First Open Bible Church in Rock Falls.
Survivors include three daughters, Dolly (Tom) Lucas of Toronto, Canada, Carol Sue (Richard) Akridge of Sterling, Leslee T. (Richard) Catlett of Prophetstown; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, and three brothers.
Services will be held at 10 AM, Friday, February 10, 2006 at the Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Les Funderberg of First Open Bible Church officiating. Burial will be at the Malden cemetery, Malden. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM, Thursday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the First Open Bible Church, Rock Falls.
MARRIETTA LILLY
ROCK FALLS - Marrietta Lilly, 67, of Rock Falls, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at CGH Medical Center. She was self-employed as a beautician.
Mrs. Lilly was born October 8, 1938 in New Bedford, the Daughter of John and Luella (Harrison) Franks. She married
William C. Lilly May 18, 1956 in Rock Falls. Mary was a devoted and loving mother whose most cherished moments were times spent surrounded by her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, reading and playing bingo.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Brenda (Terry) Fredrickson, Lori (Tod Reynolds) Harris, both of Rock Falls; four sons, Kerry (Dee Dee) Lilly, Mark Lilly, both of Rock Falls, Tim (Crystal) Lilly of Morrison, William J. (Lynne) Lilly of Tampico; one sister, Shirley (David) Tompkins of Rock Falls; two brothers, LaVerne (Bobbie) Franks, Clarence (Christine) Franks, both of Rock Falls; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Lisa, three brothers, Marion, Jack, Warren Franks and a son-in-law, Ron Harris.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 4, 2006 at Schilling Funeral Home with Dalmus Meeks of Harvest Time Bible Church officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be 5-8, Friday, February 3rd at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.

Bettie Wilson
STERLING - Bettie Irene Wilson, 62, of Sterling, Illinois was welcomed home by the Lord on January 25, 2006. Bettie was born September 27, 1943 in Sterling, the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Schaney) Wilson. Bettie graduated from Western Illinois University in 1965, and the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1971. She was a member of numerous organizations including the Vietnamese Resettlement, Special Olympics, Sauk Valley Arts Council, Illinois Reading Council and the Job Counseling for CETA. Bettie was employed as a case manager and educator with Self-Help Enterprises in Sterling. Her other professions included, being a certified social worker, a qualified mental retardation professional in Illinois, and a certified educator in Illinois and Connecticut.
Bettie’s great passions in life included an electic range of music, writing, art, gardening, conservation. Nature and all of her beloved pets. However, her greatest love was for God, her family and friends.
Survivors include two brothers: Robert K. Wilson from Trivoli, Illinois and Richard (Catherine) Wilson from Rockford, Illinois. Nieces and Nephews: Zane (Marty) Wilson of Kempton IM., Brian (Marcie) Wilson of Peoria, Illinois, Roxanne (Joe) McCarren, Karen (Mitch) Whittington, Catherine (Tom) Cervantes, and Mary Wilson all of Rockford Illinois. Great Nieces and Nephews: Owen Whittington, Anna Whittington, Savannah Johnson, Joseph and Jennah (Jeremiah) Christenson, Theresa and Michael Cervantes, Carrie and Alec Stenerson, Zac, Jake and Matthew Wilson, and Mackenzie Wilson. Cousins include: Diana Lynn (Fred) Bokee, Janet Kay (Berg) Anderson, and Debbie (Melvin) Hoff.
Bettie is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mildred Wilson, her cousins Karen Ann and Jerry Anderson, her sister-in-law Wilma Wilson and her great niece Alexandra Cervantes.
The Visitation will be at 12 P.M., with the funeral service following at 1 P.M. on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at the Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
