MILDRED H. CONKLEN
STERLING - Mildred H. Conklen, 82, died Saturday evening October 26, 2002 in her home after an illness.
Mildred Conklen was born October 3, 1920 near Coleta, the daughter of Robert A. and Hannah B. Hinrichs Schultz. She married
Walter O. Conklen in Sterling on October 19, 1938. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1998.
Mrs. Conklen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sterling.
Survivors include one son, Keith (Shirley) Conklen of Sterling; two daughters, Carol (Earl) Janssen of Sandwich and Linda (Don) Ebersole of Polo; one sister, Dorothy E. (Gene) Dir of Rock Falls; eight grandchildren, Brad (Sue) Janssen, Kent (Diane) Janssen, Wayne (Tammy) Ebersole, Wendell (Patty) Ebersole, Wesley Ebersole, Keith O. (Stacy) Conklen, Jr.; Karen (Marshal) Longanecker, Kevin (Rhonda) Conklen; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kathy Ann Conklen.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sterling, with Reverend Phillip Gronbach officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11 AM at the church.
A memorial has been established.

OSCAR R. STERN
STERLING - Oscar R. Stern, 87, of Blue Goose Road, died Tuesday, October 07, 2002, at his home. He was a farmer in the area for many years. Mr. Stern was born September 12, 1915 in Sterling, the son of Henry and Mary (Ricklefs) Stern. He married
Edna M. Behrens on May 15, 1937. He was a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert (Carole) Stern of Annawan, Lyle (Deborah) Stern of Sterling; one daughter, Joyce (Robert) Hollaway of Sterling; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Elaine Stern.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, October 11, 2002 at the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Daniel Behmlander officiating. Burial will be at Hopkins cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM, Thursday, October 10, 2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church.
DOROTHY IRENE WILSON
STERLING - Mrs. Dorothy Irene Wilson, 85, of 203 East LeFevre, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2002 at Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris. Mrs. Wilson was born October 26, 1916 in rural Bradford Township about seven miles southeast of Franklin Grove, IL and grew up in Dixon, IL. The daughter of Roy W. and Alice M. (Naylor) Plowman. She married
Donald G. Wilson on February 20, 1937 in Dixon. They lived in Sterling for over fifty years, where they were members of the Church of the Brethern and owned and operated Plowman’s Super Market in Sterling and Rock Falls for thirty-eight years. Her husband preceded her in death on June 1, 1991. Survivors include a daughter. Retta Jean (Truman) Reinoehl of Olathe, KS; a son, Donald R. (Brenda) Wilson of Sterling; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, Lori Reinoehl (Kent) Lichty, parents of, Tolan and Taryn, Gayle Reinoehl (Allen) Gumm, parents of, Jordan and Brandon, Joel (Dennise) Reinoehl, parents of, Taylor, Cory, and Chandler, Kyle (Lisa) Reinoehl, parents of Bailey, Carly and Grace, Michael(Darcy) Wilson, parents of, Jakob, and Abbey, Michele (John) Puetz, parents of, John, Andrew and Chloe, Craig (Beth) Wilson, parents of Brooke and Christopher (Jennifer) Wilson, parents of, Avarie. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Richard Bright, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Pinecrest Manor.
Ninfa Martinez Duran
ROCK FALLS - Ninfa Martinez Duran, 54, of 1305 9th Avenue, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at CGH Medical Center.
Mrs. Duran was born February 10, 1948 in Corpus Christi, TX, the daughter of Ansencion and Hortencia (Zapata) Moreno. She was a member of Sterling and Rock Falls VFW and Latin American Social Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma (Miguel) Herrera of Rock Falls and Lila (Rudi) Martinez of Sterling; three sons, Guadalupe (Cindi) Martinez of Sterling, David Martinez III and Santiago (Francis) Martinez, both of Point Isabele, TX; five sisters, Yolanda (Herminio) Rodriquez and Mary (Jessie) Prado, both of Rock Falls, Elena (Rogelio) Hernandez and Josephine and (Julian) Nava, both of Corpus Christi, TX, and Jesusa (Tano) Villanueva of Greedy, CO; three brothers, Antonio (Mary) Moreno and Oscar (Barbarita) Moreno, both of Corpus Christi, TX and Ramon(Sherri)Moreno of Memphis, TN; fourteen grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara and Diana Moreno and one brother, Jose Moreno, all of Corpus Christi, TX.
Funeral arrangements were completed by Schilling Funeral Home.
FERNE D. MARCY
Ferne D. Marcy, 92, of Sterling died early Friday morning, November 8, 2002 at Resthave Nursing Home in Morrison. She had been employed for 40 years by Sears Roebuck & Co. until her retirement.
Mrs. Marcy was born July 5, 1910 in Rock Falls, the daughter of Leonard H. and Edna M. (Sharp) Freeman. She married
Leonard E. Marcy on September 14, 1950 in Sterling. He died November 18, 1969. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Sterling-Rock Falls Republican Women, traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, and enjoyed working with her flowers.
Survivors include a step-daughter, Janet Rampe of Moline; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Josephine Horst and Loren Young; two nephews, Alan Freeman and Ken Freeman; a cousin, Paul (Alice) Sharp; and a special friend, Bernice Janssen of Lyndon.
Also preceding her in death was one brother, Ward Freeman.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 11, 2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend David Beckstrom, Pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM, Monday at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to Resthave Nursing Home and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
FLOYD E. FOSTER
Floyd E. Foster, 84, died Sunday morning, November 10, 2002, at Coventry Village, Sterling, after an extended illness.
Mr. Foster was born March 1, 1918 in Blandinsville, the son of Levi Earl and Lenna (Cotton) Foster. He served 4-1/2 years in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theatre. He married
Helen F. Spangler on February 3, 1946 in Carthage. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling, American Legion Post #296 Sterling, and Rock River Country Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Rock River Lodge AF & AM #612, and a member of the Freeport Consistory. He was also past President of the Iowa and Illinois Funeral Supply Sales Clubs, and several professional vehicle sales organizations. He started Foster Coach in 1957 and operated the business until his retirement in 1980
Survivors include his wife, Helen; one son, Steve (Jackie) Foster of Sterling, one sister, Stella M. Tillotson of LaHarpe; three grandchildren, Andrew (Liz) Foster, Sterling Shawn Foster Los Angeles, CA, P.J. Foster, Chicago; one great-granddaughter, Allie Foster, of Sterling; 14 nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday November 13, 2002, at the Schilling Funeral Home, with Reverend Peter Wilkinson, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Sterling, officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Funeral Home.
Private graveside services will be at Riverside cemetery.

HARRIET R. KURTZ
ROCK FALLS - Harriet R. Kurtz, 80, of Rock Falls died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at CGH Medical Center. She was a Registered Nurse and had been employed as a scrub nurse for orthopedic surgeons in the Chicago area.
Mrs. Kurtz was born July 13, 1922 in Highland Park, the daughter of Lyle and Emma (Schaulis) Ream. She married
Thomas D. Kurtz on April 9, 1946 in Chicago. He preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage. She was a Brownie and Cub Scout Leader, taught Bible school, and was a member of the CGH Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Dr. Bill) Mallon of Durham, NC, Kathy (David) Ferrari of Milton, MA; one son, John (Lori) Kurtz of Sterling; one sister, Doris Lawrence of Lake Bluff, and five grandchildren, Heidi and Anna Kurtz, Tyler, Luke and Hana Ferrari.
Also preceding her in death was one sister, Evelyn Rauschert.
A private family service will be held at the Schilling Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the CGH Auxiliary in care of Joan Hermes, 100 E. Lefevre Road, Sterling.
FRANK W. "PETE" CASEY
STERLING - Frank W. "Pete" Casey, 71, of Sterling, died Monday, November 11, 2002 at the CGH Medical Center. He was a Production and Plant Manager at Frantz Manufacturing until his retirement in 1995.
Mr. Casey was born November 6, 1931 in Sterling, the son of Frank R. and Eleanor (Hartshorn) Casey. He married
Leola Clark on September 20, 1957 in Sterling. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Sterling Athletic Hall of Fame. He had a lifelong love of all sports especially track and field and was active in various church, school and community organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Leola; three sons, Tim (Peggy Sue) Casey of Westmont, Jim Casey of Sterling, Doug (Jamie) Casey of Palatine; one sister, Sally Stewart of Sterling; and six grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was his daughter, Susan.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Thursday, November 14, 2002 at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Reverend David Beckstrom, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, at the Schilling Funeral Home.

WARD H. WOESSNER
STERLING - Ward H. Woessner, 86, formerly of 1312 East 28th Street, died, Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Sterling Pavilion. He farmed in the Sterling area for over 50 years. Mr. Woessner was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He served for over 30 years on the Farmers Elevator Board of Milledgeville. Mr. Woessner was born March 21, 1916, the son of Fredrick and Mary Johnson Woessner. He married
Arlene M. Deets at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sterling on January 15, 1936. Survivors include his wife, Arlene; two sons, James (Hiroko) Woessner of Lubbock, TX. and Rick (Kathy) Woessner of Sterling; one daughter, Linda (David) Stralow of Sterling; one sister, Arlene Broers of Sterling; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Brad and Scott Stralow; five sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sterling with Reverend Philip Gronbach officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home.

WENDELL Z. FERGUSON
Wendell Z. Ferguson, 84, of Rock Falls, died Thursday. November 14, 2002 at CGH Medical Center. He was employed as a welder at NWSW until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Ferguson was born February 25, 1918 in Brownstown, the son of Eber S. and Nancy (Mills) Ferguson. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Force during WW II., and was a pilot of a B17 and flew with the Hell’s Angels. He received the distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Theater Ribbon with Battlestar and Victory Medal. He retired with the rank of Captain. He married
Lillian A. Fee Devers on September 24, 1949. He was a former flight instructor at the Sterling Airport and a former assistant Cub-master. He was a member of the American Legion Post 902 Rock Falls and the VFW #5418 Rock Falls. Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Rock Falls; two daughters, Wendy Bley of Rock Falls, Paula Ferguson of Chicago; two sons, David (Marlene) Devers of Sterling, Mark Ferguson of Rock Falls; two sisters, Gladys Ellison of Morton, Kay (Ralph) Halterman of Ottawa; seven grandchildren, Leonard Devers, Jeffrey Devers, Heath Devers, Tina Ferguson, Kristen Ferguson, Shawna Ferguson, Amber Aldridge; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Preceding him in death were two sisters, two brothers and three grandchildren
Funeral services will be held at 10:30AM at the First Christian Church of Rock Falls with the Reverend April McClure, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2-5, Sunday at the Schilling Funeral Home. A memorial has been established.
