Chester A. Smith
County native Chester A. Smith died Tuesday, October 13, 1998, at his home in Bradenton, Florida. He was 66.
Mr. Smith was born July 24, 1922, in Brown County.
His widow, Barbara Smith, survives in Florida.
Mr. Smith had owned and operated an auto repair shop before retiring.
He was a member of Hope Moravian Church in Bartholomew County.
Other survivors include two daughters, Carol Lynch of Bradenton, Florida and Angie Whiteman of Granada Hills, California; a son, Chad Smith of Bradenton, Florida; five sisters, Florence Van Auken of Columbus, Pat Watkins and Marzella Doty, both of Hope, Ann McIntosh of Fairland, and Sharon DeMoss of Arizona; two brothers, Ronald Smith of Brownstown and Ray Smith of Columbus; and two grandchildren.
A service was conducted Saturday, October 17, at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home's Mansion Chapel in Ellenton, Florida.
Burial was in that city's Mansion Memorial Park.

William Vinson
Morgantown resident William Vinson died Sunday, October 11, 1998, at the University of Louisville Medical Center. He was 71.
Mr. Vinson was born May 7, 1927, in Scottsville, Kentucky to Jack and Ruby Bandy Vinson McDonald. His mother lives in Shelbyville, Illinois.
He and Linda Gladish were married De-cember 9, 1994, in New Albany. She survives.
Mr. Vinson had worked at Allison's Plant #8 for 18 years, retiring in 1976.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.
Mr. Vinson also enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle and he loved animals.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include a daughter, Vickie Lynn Vinson of Phoenix, Arkansas; and a sister, Joyce Meador of Shelbyville, Illinois.
Mr. Vinson was preceded in death by his father.
The Reverend Ray Unger led a service Saturday, October 17, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.

James Derringer
Ill since July, James Dale Derringer died Friday afternoon, October 23, 1998, at his home in Seymour. He was 51.
Mr. Derringer was born December 23, 1946, in Martinsville to Everett Derringer and Frieda Schrougham Derringer.
He and Mary R. Sorley were married January 29, 1966, in Marshall, Illinois. She survives in Jackson County.
Mr. Derringer had worked as a laborer.
He was a member of the Surprise Christian Church, Seymour Bowling Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Seymour, Order of the Eastern Star and the Washington Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Derringer's c.b. handle was "King James."
He was a United States Army veteran.
Other survivors include a son, William Zach Derringer of Brownstown; a daughter, Kimberly D. Derringer of Seymour; a daughter-in-law, Lesley Derringer; two grandchildren, Tiffany Nicole Derringer and Nick Derringer; three sisters, Vickie Roach of Nineveh, Susie Hyatt of Edinburgh and Melody Leach of Morgantown; and a brother, Mickey Derringer of Nineveh.
Mr. Derringer was preceded in death by his parents.
The Reverend Brent Denny led a service Monday, October 26, at Voss and Sons Funeral Chapel in Seymour.
Burial was in that community's Riverview Cemetery.
Maurice Fraker
Morgantown native Maurice G. Fraker died Tuesday, October 20, 1998, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. A resident of Franklin, he was 83.
Mr. Fraker was born October 12, 1915, in Morgantown to Alva L. and Elsie E. McIlvain Fraker.
He and Eunice A. Wulf were married February 26, 1940, in Nineveh. She survives.
Mr. Fraker was graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1933.
He had worked for the United States Civil Service at Camp Atterbury for 19 years, retiring in 1972.
Mr. Fraker was a member of Jollity United Methodist Church, Franklin Masonic Lodge, Greenwood York Rite, Fleet Reserve Association, Descendants of Indiana Pioneers, Benjamin Harrison Camp Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Clarence Cook Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.
He had served as a CPO in the United States Navy from 1933 until 1953 in areas such as the South Pacific, Atlantic and Korean War.
Mr. Fraker was a former member of Mulberry United Methodist Church in Mulberry, Florida for 18 years. During that time, he served as an usher and was a member of the church's administrative board.
Other survivors include a son, Douglas C. Fraker of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Fraker was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
The Reverend David R. Ashby conducted a service Saturday, October 24, at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial was in that city's Greenlawn Cemetery.
Mary P. Howard
Nashville resident Mary Payne Howard died Monday, October 19, 1998, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 91.
Mrs. Howard was born September 27, 1907, in Moweaqua, Illinois to H. Eli and Leona Connor.
She first married John "Bud" Payne. He died in 1954. After his death she and Roy Howard were married. He died in 1966.
Mrs. Howard had worked with Rexall Drug Company before retiring. She was also a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Payne of Bloomington; a son-in-law, Anthony Vestuto of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Richard Benson of Macon, Illinois, Andrew Payne Vestuto and Jon J. Vestuto, both of Bloomington and Annette Vestuto Montoya of Dallas, Texas; and a great-grandson, Adrian Payne Montoya of Dallas, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Payne Benson; a sister, Mildren Connor Hott; a brother, James Connor; and a grandson.
Don Drone led a service Saturday, October 24, at Ater Memorial Home in Macon, Illinois.
Burial was in that community's Macon Cemetery.
Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington was in charge of local arrangements.

Maurice Simmonds
Maurice I. Simmonds Sr. died Sunday, October 18, 1998, at his home in Osgood. He was 84.
Mr. Simmonds left survivors in Brown County.
He was born March 8, 1914, in Richmond to Samuel Simmonds and Ozella Mobley Simmonds.
He and Lois P. Roszell were married November 12, 1938, in Decatur County. She died January 16, 1982.
Mr. Simmonds had worked as a systems analyst specialist at Cummins Engine Company for 42 years before retiring.
He was a member of United Brethren Methodist Church.
Mr. Simmonds was graduated from Williamsburg High School and Earlham College.
Survivors include four daughters, Marlene Hughes of Osgood, Dona Meece of Avon, Brenda Green of Valrico, Florida, and Rayn Star Mordy of Nashville; three sons, Steven Simmonds of Arthur, Illinois, Wesley Simmonds of Nashville and Maurice I. Simmonds Jr. of Indianapolis; four sisters, Gladys Ashley of Brookville and Judy Malemburg, Norma Breckenridge and Jean Simmonds, all of Florida; two brothers, Richard Simmonds of Plainfield and John Simmonds of Burney; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Simmonds; a sister, Vivian Halsema; and a granddaughter, Lisa McGee.
The Reverend David Shiver led a service Wednesday, October 21, at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Burial was at Hawcreek Cemetery in Hope.

R.C. Tharp
R.C. Tharp, the brother of Mt. Moriah Road resident Edward Tharp, died Monday, October 12, 1998, in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, he was 61.
Mr. Tharp was born January 2, 1937, in Hazard, Kentucky, to John H. Tharp and Viola Bryant.
He was married to Peggy S. Rich. She survives.
Mr. Tharp had worked as a plant manager at Sani-Serv for 35 years, retiring in 1996.
Other survivors include a daughter, Sharyle Lewis; two additional brothers, Gene Tharp and Johnny Tharp; two sisters, Geraleen Mieser and Chrystlee Raglin; and two grandchildren.
A service was conducted Friday, October 16, at Conkle Funeral Home's Lynhurst Chapel in Indianapolis.
Burial was in that city's Washington Park East Cemetery.
Helen Comey
Former Orchard Hill Drive resident Helen M. Comey died Sunday, October 25, 1998, at her home in Bloomington. She was 68.
Miss. Comey was born August 27, 1930, in Yonkers, New York, to William J. and Catherine O'Brien Comey.
She had worked as a registered nurse at Columbus Regional Hospital and St. John's Hospital in Yonkers, New York.
Miss Comey was graduated from Cocheran School of Nursing in New York.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Brown County and the National Nurses Association.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Swarbrick of Bloomington; two brothers, J. Brien Comey, her twin, of Allendale, New Jersey and William J. Comey Jr. of Dunwoody, Georgia; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Father Bill Stumpf conducted a service Friday, October 30, at St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North.
Entombment was at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.
Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.

Vera Cordry
Following a battle with cancer, former Brown County resident Vera Lee Cordry died Thursday, October 29, 1998, in Phoenix, Arizona. She was 97.
A native of Preston, Kansas, she was the daughter of John William and Nancy Pedigo.
She and her husband, Indianapolis businessman Chester "Chet" William Cordry, moved to northeastern Brown County in 1955 and built a home on the lake which now bears their name.
Mrs. Cordry was a member of P.E.O.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Hardy of Youngstown, Arizona; two sisters, Lola Nelson of Indianapolis and Virginia Gross of Hutchison, Kansas; and nine grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962; and a daughter, Betty Barkow.
A service was conducted Saturday, October 31, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Fishers.
Maurice George
Maurice E. George, the father of Nashville resident Kevin George, died Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 1998, at his home in Bartholomew County. He was 70.
Mr. George was born April 15, 1928, in Russell Springs, Kentucky, to Ezra and Lillie Bolin George.
He and Flossie L. Haddix were married September 12, 1970. She survives near Columbus.
Mr. George had worked at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus for 43 years before retiring.
He also had owned and operated a window-cleaning business for 40 years.
Mr. George was a member of Bethel Weslyan Church and Cummins Retired Employees and Kin Club.
Other survivors include two daughters, Virginia England of Columbus and Karen George of Anderson; six other sons, Bill Hayes and Eugene Hayes, both of Columbus, Charles Hayes of Harker Heights, Texas, Daniel Hayes of Franklin, David Hayes of Hartsville and Allen George of Franklin; four sisters, Opal Cloninger of Jeffersonville, Ova Wilson of North Vernon and Nola Richards and Wanda Grimes, both of Columbus; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip George; and three brothers, Paul George, Norman George and Tobias George.
The Reverend Bill Carpenter and Reverend Carl Ubell led a service Saturday, October 31, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in Bartholomew County's Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
