Charles Gill
Seven-week-old Charles William Gill died Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 1998, at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The infant had been ill since birth.
He left survivors in Brown County.
The child was born October 3, 1998, in Martinsville to Stuart Gill and Angie Stalf Pauley. His parents survive in Martinsville.
Other survivors include paternal grandfather, Charles Gill of Greenwood; paternal great-grandfather, Ray Gill of Franklin; paternal great-grandmother, Geneva Mullikin of Hope; maternal grandmother , Rosel Stalf of Germany; a sister, Lisa Marie Pauley of Martinsville; five half-brothers, Josh Pauley, Jamie Pauley and James Pauley, all of Bean Blossom, Carl B. Vandurmen of Martinsville and Sam Gill of Paragon; and two half-sisters, Erin Gill of Paragon and Melanie Pauley of Bean Blossom.
The infant was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Bennie Gill; maternal grandfather, Wille Stalf; paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Gill; and paternal great-grandfather, Carl Mullikin.
A service was conducted Thursday, December 3, at First Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Franklin.
Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville was in charge of arrangements.

Ermell Hamilton
Brown County native Ermell N. Hamilton died Monday, November 30, 1998, at Hearne Health Care Center in Morgantown. A resident of that community, she was 86.
Mrs. Hamilton was born August 20, 1912, near Fruitdale to Joseph R. and Dollie B. Bell Way.
She and Floyd F. Hamilton were married October 3, 1931, in Martinsville. He died October 5, 1972.
Mrs. Hamilton was a charter member of the Morgantown Assembly of God Church. She had been active in the church for half a century including work for the church's women's ministry.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and baking. Mrs. Hamilton was also an avid Indiana University basketball fan.
Survivors include two sons, Leon Hamilton of Brown County and David Hamilton of Hartford City; three daughters, Marilyn Ramsey of Kissimmee, Florida, Donna Gregory of Franklin and Beverley Rainwater of Morgantown; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Glen Way of Greenwood; and a sister, Blanche Murphy of Tampa, Florida.
Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue Hamilton; a granddaughter, Melanie Ramsey; two sisters, Mary Tracy and Fern Barrett; and a brother, Clarence Way.
The Reverend Gene McClain, David Hamilton and Michael Bell led a service Friday, December 4, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.

Donald Harvey
Indianapolis resident Donald L. "Harv" Harvey died Sunday, December 6, 1998, at his home. He was 53.
Mr. Harvey left survivors in the Brown County area.
He was born July 3, 1945, in Martinsville to Ray W. and Ruth O. Copple Harvey.
He and Janet F. Phelps were married August 22, 1994, in Indianapolis. She survives in Marion County.
Mr. Harvey had worked as a deputy sheriff in Marion County for 26 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the Southport Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, both in Indianapolis.
Mr. Harvey enjoyed reading and watching movies. He collected videos and movies as a hobby.
He was a United States Army veteran during the Vietnam War, serving from 1963 until 1966.
Mr. Harvey was graduated from Emerich Manual High School in Indianapolis in 1963.
Other survivors include a son, Eric D. Harvey of Indianapolis; a daughter, Erin C. Harvey of Indianapolis; a step-son Jason Luce of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Cassidy Lawton of Indianapolis; and his sister-in-law, Judy Harvey of Morgantown.
The Reverend Don Kinser will conduct a service today, December 9, at 11 a.m. in Meredith-Clark Funeral Home at Morgantown.
Burial will be in Martinsville's Centennial Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1189 South Main Street, Martinsville, Indiana 46151.

George King
Former Brown County resident George Wayne King died Friday afternoon, December 4, 1998, at Lockerbie Health Care Center in Indianapolis. He was 63.
Mr. King had also lived in Columbus.
He was born February 13, 1935, in Monroe County to Carl and Maggie Lucas King.
Mr. King had been self-employed.
Survivors include three daughters, Lana Davis of Reddington, Tereasa Kovicich of Greensburg and Tonya Korman of Lebanon; two sisters, Rosemary Lambert of Columbus and Linda Compton of Shepherdsville, Kentucky; two brothers, Ron King of Columbus and David King of Elizabethtown; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Monday, December 7, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Brown County's Henderson Cemetery.

Mary L. Malan
Mary Leona Malan died Friday evening, December 4, 1998, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Freetown, she was 90.
Mrs. Malan left survivors in Brown County.
She was born May 4, 1908, in Linton to Fredrick and Elizabeth Massey Criss.
She first married Thomas Reed. He preceded her in death. She then married Orville J. Malan. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Malan was a homemaker.
She was a member of Becks Grove Christian Church in Van Buren Township.
Survivors include four sons, Jack Malan of Columbus, Robert W. Malan and Fredrick L. Malan, both of Brown County, and Howard K. Malan of North Vernon; seven daughters, Barbara Strahl, Ruth Hendricks and Joan Weddle, all of Columbus, Phyllis McQueary and Karen Streeval, both of Brown County, Esther Rutledge of Indianapolis and Fay Bracher of Princeton; a brother, Everett Criss of Spencer; 36 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Malan was preceded in death by two sons, John Paul Malan and Orville Malan Jr.; a daughter, Thelma Chelf; and two sisters, Berchie Hannum and Evelyn West.
The Reverend Nelson Lee led a service Tuesday, December 8, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in that city's Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County or Becks Grove Christian Church.

Edwin D. Shake
Edwin Davis Shake, an artist and former resident of Nashville, died Tuesday, December 1, 1998, at the United Methodist Community in Franklin. He was 85.
Mr. Shake had painted, studied and taught throughout the United States and Europe.
By profession a teacher of the French language, he was also an accomplished classical pianist.
He was born November 18, 1913, in Spencer County to the Reverend Edwin Fletcher Shake and the former Florence Davis.
Mr. Shake was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and the University of Evansville. He held a master's degree from the University of Michigan.
He taught high school in Huntingburg and preparatory school at St. John's Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, where he met and married his wife, the former Mary Giese.
Mr. Shake moved to the college-teaching level at Illinois Northern University in DeKalb and then to Stephen F. Austin University at Nacogdoches, Texas, where he retired in 1979.
He returned to Indiana to live in Nashville in 1992.
Mr. Shake was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Luciene Douglas.
Among his survivors are two sisters, Mozelle DeLong of Indianapolis and Nondas Temple of Bloomington, a niece and three nephews, including Bruce Gregory Temple of Nashville.
The body was cremated, and there were no services.
Arrangements were handled by the Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home at Franklin.

William Hacker
William L. Hacker died Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at his home in Bloomington. He was 77.
Mr. Hacker was born October 24, 1921, in Monroe County to Joseph Nelson and Ruth Elizabeth Stogsdill Hacker.
His wife, Dorothy P. Hacker, died in April. Mrs. Hacker's family hailed from the Schooner Valley area of Brown County.
Mr. Hacker had worked at Triangle and Leahy Plumbing, retiring as superintendent.
He had been a member of Local 136 of the Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters for fifty years and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Hacker was graduated from Bloomington High School in 1940.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Hacker attainted the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Hacker was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Blackerby of Bloomington; a brother, Ivan Nelson Hacker of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Catherine Harper of Bloomington; and two granddaughters, Sarah Blackerby-Bowers of Indianapolis and Laura Blackerby-Smith of Mattoon, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Donald Hacker and Robert Henry Hacker; and a sister, Musa V. Lutes.
The Reverend Tommy Shields led a service Friday, December 11, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
Burial was in that city's Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomington Hospital Foundation.

Margaret Hamlin
Morgantown native and retired educator Margaret Rund Hamlin died Friday, December 4, 1998, at her home in Whiteland. She was 82.
Mrs. Hamlin was born July 14, 1916, in Morgantown to Lee Otis and Eva May Fleener Rund.
She and William Harold Hamlin were married March 21, 1941, in Indianapolis. He died March 6, 1994.
Mrs. Hamlin graduated from Martinsville High School in 1934 and Indiana University in 1938.
She taught music at Center Grove and Nineveh high schools. Mrs. Hamlin had also taught piano privately for many years.
She was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church in Franklin, where she led the junior choir for several years as well as the Christian Women's Fellowship.
Mrs. Hamlin was a former president of the Franklin Matinee Musicale, Greenwood Order of the Eastern Star, Johnson County Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana State Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hamlin was preceded in death by two brothers.
A service was conducted Tuesday, December 8, at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial will take place on a later date at Waymire Lake in Brown County.

John Lafary
Morgantown resident John Lafary died Thursday, December 10, 1998, at West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. He was 64.
Mr. Lafary was born April 19, 1934, in Morgan County to Omer Ira and Inez Hazel Gearholdt Lafary.
His wife, Dixie Lafary, survives in Morgantown.
Mr. Lafary worked as a bus driver for the Martinsville school district, and as a truck driver. He had also farmed.
Active in civic affairs, he had served as a member of the Jackson Township Advisory Board in Morgan County and was a former chief of the Green Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Lafary was a member of the National Rifle Association and was serving as treasurer of the Morgantown Conservation Club.
Other survivors include a son, John T. "Buck" Lafary of Morgantown; two daughters, Wendy Conner of Martinsville and Wanda Kaiser of Indianapolis; and six grandchildren.
A service was conducted Monday, December 14, at Costin Funeral Home in Martinsville.
Burial was at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

Deborah Roach
Brown County Community Care Center resident Deborah Ann Roach died Sunday, December 6, 1998, at the center in Salt Creek Park. A resident of Bloomington, she was 42.
Ms. Roach was born December 23, 1955, in Long Beach, New Jersey to Rapheal L. and Blanche Schenck Roach.
She had worked as a registered nurse with First Preferred Home Care in Bloomington.
Ms. Roach was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Monroe County.
Survivors include a daughter, Deidre N. Roach of Bloomington; a brother, Gary Morris of Toms River, New Jersey; her step-mother, Juanita C. Roach of Bedford; two step-brothers, Donald Lee Cleveland of Bedford and David Lynn Cleveland of New Mexico; two step-sisters, Janet Brunecon of Marathon Key, Florida and Annie Lee of Bedford; several nieces and nephews; and step-nieces and step-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Father Don Davison will conduct a service Saturday, January 2, at 11 a.m. in Deremiah Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrell Chapel in Bloomington.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bloomington.
