Tyler Rooks
Tyler M. Rooks, the brother of Nashville resident C.C. Rooks, died Saturday afternoon, December 12, 1998, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Edinburgh, he was 71.
Mr. Rooks was born February 9, 1927, in Adair County, Kentucky to Welby Lee and Myrtle Alley Rooks.
He and his wife, Betty Rooks, were married June 27, 1962. She survives in Johnson County.
Mr. Rooks was a member of Corner Stone Community Church.
Other survivors include two daughters, Becky Botkin and Cindy Burton, both of Edinburgh; two sons, Greg Rooks and Jeffery Rooks, both of Flat Rock; six brothers, Eugene Rooks and Rollin Rooks, both of Edinburgh, Avery Rooks of Whiteland and Holland Rooks and Alvin Rooks, both of Louisville; six sisters, Ruth Burton, Cecil Burton and Ida Bryant, all of Edinburgh, Bonnie Shelton and Judy Wilkins, both of Louisville and Dottie Cline of St. Louis, Missouri; his step-mother, Lenora Rooks; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Lloyd Alley.
The Reverend Mike Whited conducted a service Tuesday, December 15, at Who So Ever Will Church in Edinburgh.
Burial was in that community's Rest Haven Cemetery.
Long Funeral Home in Edinburgh was in charge of arrangements.
Jerry Sawyer
Jerry Sawyer died Wednesday, December 9, 1998, in Indianapolis. A resident of Greenwood, he was 54.
Mr. Sawyer left survivors in the Brown County area.
He was born March 3, 1944, in Indiana to Lawrence Sawyer and Pauline Crawford. His mother survives in Morgantown.
His widow, Karen Sawyer, survives in Johnson County. They were married July 3, 1965.
Mr. Sawyer had worked as a supervisor at Navistar/International Harvester for 30 years.
He was a United States Navy veteran.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kelly Fletcher of Greenwood; a son, Kris Sawyer of Greenwood; four brothers, Larry Sawyer of Seymour, Steve Sawyer of Greenwood, Ronnie Sawyer of Bloomington and Danny Sawyer of Newport News, Virginia; three sisters, Marilyn Sawyer of Los Angeles, California, Carol Bazley of Columbus and Sue Thomas of Morgantown; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Sawyer was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Linda Sawyer.
The Reverend Marion Glover conducted a service Saturday, December 12, at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory's Greenwood Chapel.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Kenneth Schneider
Former Brown County Coroner Kenneth D. Schneider died Sunday evening, December 13, 1998, at his home in Columbus. He was 74.
Mr. Schneider was born January 7, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa to Donald J. and Lillian Anderson Schneider.
He and Connie Kreinop McQueen were married August 26, 1984. She survives.
Mr. Schneider was graduated from the State University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1947.
He had practiced medicine in Nashville and Columbus for 42 years, retiring from that profession in 1985. Mr. Schneider was also an accomplished pianist and avid stamp collector.
Mr. Schneider had operated his practice in Nashville with Dr. Robert Seibel.
A Republican, he was elected county coroner in 1952, but lost re-election four years later.
After moving to Bartholomew County, Mr. Schneider served as coroner in that county.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Columbus Exchange Club, Phi Beta Kappa, Nashville Masonic Lodge, Harrison Lake Country Club, American Medical Association and the Indiana State Medical Association.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, and retired as a colonel with the Indiana Army National Guard.
Other survivors include three sons, Richard Schneider of Portland, Oregon, Dr. John Schneider of Indianapolis and Kenneth Joe Schneider of Berkley, California; a brother, Richard Schneider of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and five grandchildren, Christopher Schneider, Matthew Schneider, Sarah Schneider, Julia Schneider and Clare Schneider.
The Reverend Richard J. Yeaton will conduct a service Thursday, December 17, at 10 a.m. in Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel at Columbus.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Jonesville.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Howard Arnold
Brown County native Howard Allen "Skip" Arnold died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida. A resident of Bradenton, Florida, he was 77.
Mr. Arnold was born December 13, 1921, in Brown County to Ralph and Grace Brummett Arnold.
His widow, Naomi Ruth Arnold, survives.
He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1939 and was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Arnold had worked as a farmer. He was a member of Centennial Christian Church in Martinsville and Bradenton Christian Church in Florida.
Other survivors include two sons; Theron A. "Skip" Arnold of Martinsville and Danny Arnold of Englewood, Florida; a daughter, Jill Gulash of Bradenton, Florida; two brothers; Al Arnold and Tom Arnold, both of Martinsville; a sister, Iris Lee of Martinsville; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Cragen and Lois Carmichael; and two brothers, Fred Arnold and William Arnold.
Larry J. Kuntz led a service Saturday, December 19, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was i nMorgan County’s Centennial Cemetery.
Marion Deckard
Marion A. Deckard died Wednesday, December 16, 1998, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville. A resident of that city, he was 78.
Mr. Deckard was born February 9, 1920, in Nashville to Raleigh and Elizabeth Woods Deckard.
He was married to Dolores L. Conrad. She survives in southern Indiana.
Mr. Deckard joined the Jeffersonville Police Department in 1952. He became chief of the force in 1964, retiring in 1972.
He was also retired from the maintenance department at American Commercial Barge Lines.
Mr. Deckard was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include two sons; Everett Deckard and Tilmon Deckard; two daughters; Elizabeth Deckard and Rebecca Bryant; a brother, Harris Deckard of Bloomington; three sisters; Anna Lee Gross of Bloomington, Martha Johnston of Indianapolis and Lois Carter of Nashville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Saturday, December 19, at Coots Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Burial was in Clark County’s Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Geneva Jinkinson
State Road 46 East resident Geneva O. Ohlstrom Jinkinson died Sunday afternoon, December 13, 1998, at her home. She was 97.
Mrs. Jinkinson was born January 12, 1901, in Michigan to Charles Gustav Ohlstrom and Julia Christiansen.
She had worked as a secretary for many years.
Survivors include a son, Harold L. Jinkinson of Morgantown.
Mrs. Jinkinson was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.
A service was conducted Wednesday, December 16, at Ridge Lawn Cemetery in East Chicago.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Langley
Ruby W. Langley, the sister of Morgantown resident John White, died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at her home in Clay City. She was 74.
Mrs. Langley was born May 26, 1924, in Lawrence County to John W. and Orpha Abney White.
She was married to Harold H. Langley. He died in 1991.
A homemaker, she was a member of the General Assembly Church of the Firstborn in Staunton.
Other survivors include four sons; Richard Langley and Hardy Langley, both of Clay City, Harold Langley of Quemado, Texas and Randy Langley of Harmony; three daughters; Merry Bell Richardson and Angela Carole Adams, both of Clay City and Sharon Roseanne Jensen of Staunton; two other brothers; William White of West Baden and Howard White of Orleans; four sisters; Francis Tharpe of Orleans, Mary Day and Darlene Stout, both of West Baden, and Stella Ferguson of Sentinel, Oklahoma; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Wesley Langley.
The Reverend Tom Nation led a service Friday, December 18, at Costin Funeral Home in Martinsville.
Burial was in Morgan County’s Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery.
N. Kyle Morris
N. Kyle Morris died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at Witham Hospital in Lebanon. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 27.
Mr. Morris left survivors in the Brown County area.
He was born March 23, 1971, in Indianapolis to William Morris and Jacqueline Cor-coran Morris. His parents survive in Marion County.
Mr. Morris graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis in 1989.
He had worked at Stillwell’s Monuments in Frankfort.
Mr. Morris enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He served in the United States Army from 1993 to 1995.
Other survivors include his step-father, Danny Allen of Indianapolis; a brother, David Morris of Indianapolis; a half-sister, Tonya Stillwell of Frankfort; and his maternal grandparents, Melvin and Bertha Corcoran of Morgantown.
Pastor Ray Unger conducted a service Friday, December 18, at Mt. Zion Separate Baptist Church in rural Morgan County.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

David Patton III
David Wayne Patton III, the son of Upper Salt Creek Road residents David Wayne Patton Jr. and Renee Jensen Patton, was stillborn Sunday, December 20, 1998, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
The infant is also survived by maternal grandparents, David W. Patton Sr. of Franklin and Greta Burkhart of Trafalgar; paternal great-grandparents, Carlie and Rebecca Cline of Trafalgar; paternal great-great-grandparents, Arthur and Della Collett of Brown County; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth E. Carpenter of Trafalgar; step-grandfather, William O. Carpenter of Trafalgar; great-grandparents, Darrell and Joann Criss of Terre Haute; grandfather, Mark A. Jensen of California; and great-grandparents, Theodore and Lou Jensen of Terre Haute.
A service will be conducted today, December 23, at 1 p.m. in Hamblen Township’s Unity Baptist Church Cemetery.

Amaryllis Shepherd
Nashville resident Amaryllis Madonna Shepherd died Saturday evening, December 19, 1998, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 69.
Miss Shepherd was born January 6, 1929, in Brown County to Thomas C. Shepherd and Ethel Ayers Shepherd.
She had worked as a cook in Brown County State Park’s Abe Martin Lodge before retiring in 1988.
Miss Shepherd was a member of the Columbus Elks Lodge.
Survivors include three brothers, Roscoe Stanley Shepherd of North Vernon, William Grant Shepherd of Salem and David Shepherd of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Shepherd and Earl Shepherd; and a sister, Christina Lucas.
A service was conducted Tuesday, December 22, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Van Buren Township’s Bellsville Cemetery.

George Skweres
Former Brown County resident George A. Skweres Sr. died Thursday, December 17, 1998, at his home in Bloomington. He was 71.
Mr. Skweres was born October 13, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois to Philip Skweres.
He had owned and operated Modern Home Care in Bloomington which specialized in home remodeling.
Mr. Skweres was a member of Cherry Hill Christian Center Church in Monroe County.
Survivors include a son, George A. Skweres Jr. of Burr Ridge, Illinois; two daughters, Nancy Kudela of Cottage Hills, Illinois and Dorothy Mayerchak of Sharpesville, Pennsylvania; a brother Philip Skweres of Glendale Heights, Illinois; a niece and several nephews; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Skweres; and a brother, James Skweres.
The Reverend Kim Norris conducted a service Sunday, December 20, at Cherry Hill Christian Center Church.
