John W. Baird
Franklin resident John W. Baird died Monday, January 4, 1999, at his home. He was 73.
Mr. Baird left survivors in the Brown County area.
He was born February 26, 1925, in Indianapolis to Clyde and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Baird.
He and Marcella Jean Carr were married May 5, 1945. She died August 18, 1991.
Mr. Baird had worked in production control at Allison's in Indianapolis for more than 32 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers union.
Mr. Baird enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Fleming of Quincy and Nita Fergason of Franklin; a son, Scott J. Baird of New Albany, Ohio; two brothers, Alfred "Bud" Baird of Morgantown and James Timothy Baird of Trafalgar; a sister, Anna Mae Jensen of Indianapolis; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Lou Baird; a brother, Phillip Baird; and a sister, Edith Kate Wardwell.
The Reverend Brett Baird conducted a service Friday, January 8, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
The body was cremated and the cremated remains will be buried in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
Margaret Dravis
Margaret Ann "Maggie" Dravis, the mother of Nashville resident Pamela Kay Atwood, died Sunday, January 3, 1999, at her home in Indianapolis. She was 71.
Mrs. Dravis was born August 20, 1927, in Indianapolis to Jewell Kirtley Leak and Ruth Osborn Leak.
She and Edward Dravis were married June 2, 1946, in Indianapolis. He survives.
Mrs. Dravis was a homemaker.
She was a member of Southport Baptist Church, International Travel Study Club. Mrs. Dravis was also a drama instructor and porcelain painter.
Other survivors include a son, David Lowell Dravis of Indianapolis; another daughter, Diana Dawn Wilson of Atlanta, Georgia; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Mrs. Dravis was preceded in death by two brothers, Aaron Eugene Leak and William Allen Leak.
A service was conducted Thursday, January 7, at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Indianapolis.

Thomas Fitzgerald
Brown County Community Care Center resident Thomas J. Fitzgerald died Tuesday, January 5, 1999, at the center in Salt Creek Park. He was 92.
Mr. Fitzgerald had lived in Bloomington.
He was born December 2, 1906, in Chicago to John and Mary Reynolds Fitzgerald.
His wife, Gertrude R. Fitzgerald, preceded him in death.
Mr. Fitzgerald had worked at Commonwealth Edison utility in Chicago for 44 years before retiring.
He was an ameteur radio operator for more than 60 years.
Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of the Bloomington Ameteur Radio Club, St. Paul's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
He had also attended St. Paul's Catholic Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan Warrix and Trudy Marsischky, both of Bloomington and Mary Sharon Kaplinski of New Lennox, Illinois; two sons, Thomas J. Fitzgerald Jr. of Rossmore, California and John J. Fitzgerald of Bloomington; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes O'Leary, Marie Klein and Joan Hobbs; and a brother, Jack Fitzgerald.
Father Emmanuel Ribeiro conducted a service Saturday, January 9, at St. Paul's Catholic Center in Bloomington.
Burial was in Monroe County's Clear Creek Cemetery.
Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington was in charge of arrangements.

Claude Foster
Brown County native Claude R. Foster died Monday, January 4, 1999, at Gosport Nursing Home in Owen County. A resident of that community, he was 85.
Mr. Foster was born July 16, 1913, in Brown County to Pearl Foster .
He was married to Mary E. Howard. She preceded him in death.
He had worked as a carpenter.
Mr. Foster attended Stinesville Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a son, Billy Foster of Columbus; three brothers, Charles Hawkins of Indianapolis, Carl Hawkins of Martinsville and Joe Marion Hawkins of Missouri; and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; and a grandchild.
The Reverend Pat Bozeman led a service Friday, January 8, at Gosport Cemetery.

Lela P. Harden
Nashville resident Lela Pearl Harden died Sunday afternoon, January 3, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 99.
Mrs. Harden was born August 24, 1899, in Columbus to William Riley and Mattie Elcina Malson Ward.
She and Weber Harden were married January 2, 1920. He died November 25, 1972.
Mrs. Harden had worked at Reliance Shirt Factory in Columbus for 21 years before retiring.
She was a former member of Mount Zion Christian Church and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Hatton of Columbus and Ginger Campbell of Jacksonville, Florida; a sister, Mary Tretter of Columbus; a half-brother, Fred "Sonny" Ward of Columbus; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harden was preceded in death by five sons, two daughters; five sisters; two brothers; and a half-sister.
The Reverend Randy Burton conducted a service Thursday, January 7, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was at Harmony Cemetery.
Mary Hendricks
Brown County native Mary Hendricks died Thursday, January 7, 1999, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan. A resident of that city since 1982, she was 88.
Mrs. Hendricks was born August 10, 1910, in Hamblen Township to Francis Marion and Effie Myrtle Calvin Petro.
She was married to Lowell Hendricks. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Hendricks is survived by a son, James Hendricks of Marquette; and three grandchildren, Heidi Wantelle of Seattle, Washington, James Hendricks of Leesburg, Virginia and Jonathan Hendricks of Marquette.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Robert Hendricks.
A service was conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marquette Sunday, January 10.
Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.

Lloyd Johnson
Nashville resident Lloyd Johnson died Saturday morning, January 9, 1999, at Hospitality House in Bloomington. He was 84.
Mr. Johnson was born October 4, 1914, in Brown County to Ora and Ida Mae Foreman Johnson.
His wife, Dorothy Johnson, preceded him in death.
Mr. Johnson had worked as a quarryman in the limestone industry before retiring.
He was a member of Laborers International of North America and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Wilma Houshour of Columbus and Peggy McKnight and Joyce Shields, both of Bloomington; two sons, Ray Johnson of Ellettsville and William Johnson of Largo, Florida; two brothers, Oliver Glen Johnson of Silver Springs, Florida and Virgil Johnson of Bloomington; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by two brothers, Cleo Johnson and Orville Johnson; and a sister, Emma Stogsdill.
The Reverend Russell Elkins will conduct a service today, January 13, at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrell Chapel in Bloomington.
Burial will be in that city's Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Lori Jorden
Former Brown County resident Lori A. Stout Jorden died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in an automobile accident near Yuma, Arizona. A resident of that city, she was 24.
She was born August 16, 1974, in Indianapolis to Dale Stout and Rhonda Hopper Scriver. Her father survives on Deckard Ridge Road.
She was married to John P. Jorden. The accident also claimed the life of her husband.
She had worked as a nurse at Yuma Regional Med-ical Center in Arizona.
Mrs. Jorden was graduated from Brown County High School in 1992. She earned a nursing degree at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
Other survivors include her step-mother, Joan Stout of Deckard Ridge Road; three sisters, Lisa Griffin of Shelbyville and Heather Stout of Columbus; two step-sisters, Tonja Nelson of Bloomington and Dea Sanderson of Anderson; two step-brothers, Tony Bennett and Terry Nelson, both of Bloomington.
Father Theodore Mens conducted a memorial mass Friday, January 8, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Griffith.
Burial was at Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

John P. Jorden
John P. Jorden, the husband of former Brown County resident Lori A. Stout Jorden, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, in the same auto accident that also took Mrs. Jorden's life near Yuma, Arizona. He was 28.
Mr. Jorden was born April 26, 1970, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio to Denis Jorden and Mary Frances "Frankie" Donahey. His parents survive in Griffith.
A graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, he taught at a public school in Yuma.
Survivors include two brothers, Denis Jorden of Hebron and Michael Jorden of Griffith; four sisters, Melissa Gona of Indianapolis, Mary-Ellen Childs of Scherville, and Sarah Jorden and Susan Jorden, both of Griffith; four nephews; two nieces; and his grandfather, D. Raymond Jorden of Ohio.
Father Theodore Mens conducted a memorial mass Saturday, January 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Griffith.
Burial was at Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Kathryn Osborne
Nineveh area resident Kathryn "Kay" Pettigrew Osborne died Thursday, January 7, 1999, at her home. She was 76.
A native of Jackson, Georgia, she was the daughter of Walter and Grace Thurston Pettigrew.
She was married to Meredith E. Osborne. He survives.
Mrs. Osborne had worked as front desk manager at the airport Hilton Inn in Indianapolis for eight years before retiring in 1979.
Before that, she had worked at the airport Holiday Inn as front desk manager.
Mrs. Osborne was a member of Aldergate Methodist Church in Indianapolis and Pythian Sisters.
Other survivors include four sons, Meredith Osborne III of Wantage, New Jersey, Jon M. Osborne and Jay R. Osborne, both of Westfield and W. Daryl Osborne of Plainfield; a daughter, Tamela Burkett of DeFunial Spring, Florida; a brother, Robert Pettigrew of Smyrna, Tennessee; two sisters, Dorothy Hill and Martha Murphy, both of North Augusta, South Carolina; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother; and a sister.
There was no service.
Entombment was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Frederic Salzman
Greasy Creek Road resident Frederic Salzman died Saturday afternoon, January 9, 1999, at his home. He was 87.
Mr. Salzman was born December 16, 1911, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Dr. Marcus Salzman and Hannah Bloch Salzman.
He and Rosetta Nugent were married October 10, 1960. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Salzman had been midwest area district manager at Metal-Edge Industries for many years, retiring in 1976.
He was active in Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Salzman was graduated from Cornell University in 1932. He earned a diploma in special studies at the Sorbonne in Paris.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving for five years in the European Theater. When discharged, Mr. Salzman was a lieutenant colonel.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marcus Salzman Jr.; and his parents.
A service was conducted Tuesday, January 12, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.

Robert Carter
Robert E. "Bob" Carter, the father of Morgantown resident Denise Smith, died Thursday, January 14, 1999, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. A resident of that city, he was 76.
Mr. Carter was born April 13, 1922, in Alaska, Indiana, to Everett David and Josephine Bowman Carter.
He was married to Catherine E. "Kate" Breedlove. She survives in Morgan County.
Mr. Carter was graduated from Martinsville High School in 1939.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Carter had worked at Allison Gas Turbine in Indianapolis for 39 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers union.
Other survivors include three sons, Mike Carter, Glenn Carter and Bobby Carter, all of Martinsville; two other daughters, Gloria Kenworthy and Beth Pemberton, both of Martinsville; a sister, Nadine Smith of Darby, Florida; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by a sister, Avis Byram; and a granddaughter.
The Reverend Eric Kersey led a service Saturday, January 16, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was in that city's New South Park Cemetery.
