Wilbur M. Meese
Brown County Art Guild member artist Wilbur M. Meese died Friday, August 21, 1998, in Indianapolis.
A resident of that city, he was 87.
His wife, Jean Ward Meese survives in Marion County.
Mr. Meese had worked as a commercial artist, package designer and art director for Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis before retiring in 1983.
A nationally known artist, Mr. Meese's works can be found in the collections of Indiana University, Purdue University, Indiana State University, Eli Lilly and Company, Indiana Bell Telephone Company, Merchants National Bank and P.R. Mallory as well as in others across the country.
Mr. Meese had been a member of the Brown County Art Guild since 1980 and was president of the organization in the mid 1980s.
He had been a member and former president of the Indiana Artists Club and the Art Directors Club of Indiana.
Mr. Meese was a charter member and first president of the Watercolor Society of Indiana.
He was also active in Indiana Heritage Arts, another Nashville-based art organization.
Other survivors include a daughter, MaryAnn Meese Fletcher; a son, Jon Michael Meese; two sisters, Roberta Beckman and Mae Marnitz; a brother, Ray Meese; and three grandchildren.
A service was conducted Monday, August 24, at Flanner and Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary in Indianapolis.
Burial was in that city's Washington Park North Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Watercolor Society of Indiana.
Marie Sambuco
Old State Road 46 resident Marie B. Isom Sambuco died Saturday evening, August 29, 1998. She was 90.
Mrs. Sambuco was born May 10, 1908, in Linton to Leslie Isom and Mabel Thompson Isom.
She was married to John Sambuco. He died July 11, 1996.
Mrs. Sambuco had worked as an office clerk at Martins Department Store of New York.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Beaty of Bloomington; a son, John Sambuco of New York; a sister, Betty Keifer of Nashville; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; a sister; and a grandson.
A service was conducted Tuesday, September 1, at St. Agnes Catholic Church on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Nashville's Greenlawn Cemetery.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary M. Bradley
Brown County Community Care Center resident Mary Marie Bradley died Friday night, August 21, 1998, at the center in Salt Creek Park. She was 89.
Mrs. Bradley was born April 3, 1909, in Lebanon to George and Laura Etta Gibbs Urban.
She was married to William Earl Bradley. He died in March 1969.
Mrs. Bradley was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Duncan Christian Center off Yellowwood Road.
Survivors include a son, Christopher E. Bradley of Bloomington; two daughters, Mary Ann Bartlett and Andra E. Smith, both of Nashville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Brother Wes Powell conducted a service Saturday, August 22, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Van Buren Township's Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Glenn V. Clay
Former Morgantown area resident Glenn V. Clay died Thursday, August 20, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove after a lengthy illness.
A resident of Indianapolis, he was 75.
Mr. Clay was born July 19, 1923, in Indianapolis to Charles B. and Lillian F. Mitchell Clay.
Mr. Clay was a member of Grace Community Church in Indiana-polis. He enjoyed playing music on the guitar and harmonica.
Mr. Clay was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, serving as an Aviation Metalsmith First Class.
Survivors include two sons, Charles V. Clay of Indianapolis and David L. Clay of Mooresville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Smallwood of Clearwater, Florida; and a brother, Kenneth B. Clay of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; a sister and a daughter. The Reverend Tex Clawson led a service Saturday, August 22, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
Jean Cox
State Road 45 resident Jean Fleener Cox died Monday, August 17, 1998, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was 73.
Mrs. Cox was born September 14, 1924, in Brown County to Edgar and Osa Brummett Fleener.
She and Jack Cox were married December 11, 1943, in Bean Blossom. He survives in Brown County.
Mrs. Cox was a homemaker.
She had been a member of the Morgantown Order of the Eastern Star for half a century.
Mrs. Cox's hobbies included flower gardening and cooking.
Other survivors include two sons, Kenny L. Cox and Kevin L. Cox, both of Nashville; a daughter, Jackie L. Rowland of Helmsburg; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Patricia Carter of Martinsville; and a half-brother, Melvin Warford of Nashville.
The Reverend Darrell Miller will conduct a service Friday, August 28, at 7 p.m. in the Nashville Masonic Temple on Artist Drive.
The family will receive friends at the temple from 6 until 7 p.m Friday evening.
Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.

Pauline North
Nashville resident Pauline North died Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 1998, at her daughter's home. She was 61.
Ms. North was born January 2, 1937, in Hyden, Kentucky to Chester and Mollie Naper Morgan.
She had worked at the Brown County Inn and Long John Silver's, both in Nashville.
Ms. North was a member of Bean Blossom Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Norma Foster and Lucy Gail Wilkerson, both of Columbus, Mollie Smith of Elizabethtown and Gayla Jean North of Nashville; a son, Eddie Cottrill of Columbus; three brothers, Woodrow Morgan, Lee Morgan and Preston Howard, all of Brown County; three sisters, Carol Mosley of Brown County, Jean Munzy of Hyden, Kentucky and Ann Banaks of Mount Sterling, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pastor Leroy Collins conducted a service Saturday, August 22, at Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel in Columbus.
Entombment was in that city's Garland Brook Mausoleum.
Margret Slaybaugh
Margret Slaybaugh, the mother of Brown County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jack Slaybaugh, died Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 1998, at Millers Merry Manor in Warsaw.
A former resident of Akron, she was 95.
Mrs. Slaybaugh was born April 30, 1903, in Miami County to Charley and Tressie Miller Smoker.
She and Lewis E. Slaybaugh were married April 19, 1924, in St. Joseph, Michigan. He died March 27, 1973.
Mrs. Slaybaugh was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Akron Church of God and Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Other survivors include a daughter, Julia Hoover of North Manchester; another son, Richard Slaybaugh of Akron; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Thelma Sausaman of Akron; and a brother, Doin Smoker of Akron.
Mrs. Slaybaugh was preceded in death by three sisters. The Reverend Steve Fleck conducted a service Sunday, August 23, at Hartzler Funeral Home in Akron.
Burial was in that community's Akron Cemetery.
Deanna J. Derringer
Trafalgar area resident Deanna Jane Sullivan Derringer died Tuesday, August 11, 1998, at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. She was 52.
Ms. Derringer was born August 25, 1945, in Trafalgar to Lawrence and Stella Marie Ragan Sullivan.
She attended Trafalgar schools.
Ms. Derringer worked as a self-employed ceramics artisan.
Survivors include two sons, John Carney Jr. and Ron Carney, both of Trafalgar; two sisters, Loretta Richardson of Trafalgar and Gloria Clephane of Indianapolis; two brothers, Mark Sullivan of Shelbyville and Stanley Sullivan of Marshallville, Georgia; and two grandchildren.
A service was conducted Friday, August 14, at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Frances B. Gagin
Brown County Community Care Center resident Frances Blanche Gagin died Friday, August 14, 1998, at the center in Salt Creek Park. She was 93.
Mrs. Gagin was born Jan-uary 18, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois to Frank and Mary Ellen White Gagin.
She was married to Martin Altmann. He died in 1978.
Mrs. Gagin had worked as a book binder at Maher Printing Company in Chicago.
Survivors include a son, Raymond G. Altmann of Englewood, Florida; a daughter, Jacquelyne Petrie of South Holland, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Martin E. Altmann; a half-sister, Marie Borti; and a half-brother, John Coffey.
The Reverend Kenneth J. DeSoto led a service Tuesday, August 18, at Bethannia Cemetery in Justice, Illinois.
Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.
Olive W. Hurdle
Brown County native Olive W. Hurdle died Tuesday, August 11, 1998, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was 88.
For the past several years, Mrs. Hurdle had lived in Mor-gantown.
She was born October 21, 1909, in Need-more to Edgar C. and Bessie Poling Young.
She and Warren F. Hurdle, a well-known former businessman and civic leader, were married April 26, 1928, in Indianapolis. He died July 20, 1983.
Mrs. Hurdle was graduated from Helmsburg High School in 1928.
She was a charter member of the Morgantown Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Hurdle was also a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Indianapolis. She had been a member of both organizations for more than half a century.
Mrs. Hurdle was a member of Morgantown Baptist Church.
She was a former president of the Morgantown Parent-Teacher Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Ann Hamilton of Morgantown; a son-in-law, Leonard Gene Hamilton of Morgantown; two grandchildren, Debra Jean Walters of Martinsville and Kenneth Warren Hamilton of Morgantown; three great-grandchildren, Sheldon Gene Hamilton, Corey Lee Hamilton and Kendsey Alyse Hamilton; and two step-great-grandchildren, Kurtis Walters and Brett Walters.
Mrs. Hurdle was preceded in death by a son, Bobbie Clinton Hurdle in 1934; her parents; a sister, Ruby L. Walker; and three brothers, Clinton Wayne Young, David G. Young and Lowell R. Young.
The Reverend Gene McClain, Reverend Jerry Young and Reverend Russell Winberg conducted a service Friday, August 14, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community's East Hill Cemetery.
