Stephen Shockney
Nashville resident Stephen J. Shockney died Wednesday afternoon, September 15, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. He was 84.
Mr. Shockney had lived in Brown County since 1989, moving from Tipton County.
He was born October 7, 1914, in Windfall to Jesse Shockney and Grace Howatt Shockney.
He and Bernice Ramsey were married March 6, 1938. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Shockney was a retired farmer. He had also worked at Haynes Stellite in Kokomo.
He had been graduated from Windfall High School in 1934.
He was a member of Kemp United Methodist Church in Tipton, Windfall Masonic Lodge, Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Knights of the York Cross of Honour and Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests. Mr. Shockney had been a member of Farm Bureau for 54 years.
Mr. Shockney was active in Republican Party politics in Tipton County. He served on the county’s advisory board.
He was a former president of Sister and Brotherhood of Tipton; former Illustrious Master of the Tipton Council; former watchman of Shepards, Order of the White Shrine at Kokomo in 1949; former Eminent Commander of the Tipton Commandry and a former patron of the Tipton Rosary Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Other survivors include two sons, Allen Shockney of Plymouth and Wayne Shockney of Hilliard, Ohio; and a daughter, Sharlyn Hensler of Rensselaer; six grandchildren, Stephanie Shockney of Hilliard, Ohio, Stephen Shockney of Lancaster, Ohio, Bret Shockney of Oak Harbor, Washington, Heather Shockney of Plymouth, Shawnda Scott of Lafayette and Bona Hensler of Rensselaer; and three great-grandchildren.
The Reverend John Hogsett led a service Saturday morning, September 18, 1999, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton.
Burial was in that community’s Fairview Cemetery.
Barbara Allen
Barbara F. Allen, the sister of Morgantown resident Jaqueline Allen, was found dead in her Bloomington home Monday, September 20, 1999. She was 65.
Ms. Allen was born May 28, 1934, in Alpine to Mark and Laura Sailor Allen.
She had worked at Bloomington Hospital and at RCA.
Ms. Allen was a member of McDoel Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Mark Pitman and Brian Ray, both of Bloomington and John Cole of Indianapolis; three daughters, Barbara J. Hackney of Crossville, Tennessee, Pamela Good of Lake Panasoffkee, Florida and Laura M. Pitman of Bloomington; two brothers, Johnnie Allen of Bloomington and Robert Allen of Green Forest, Arkansas; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and her former husband, Donald Simmons of Bloomington.
A joint service for Ms. Allen and her daughter, Donnetta Adams, who was also found dead in the home by authorities, was Thursday afternoon, September 23, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
Burial was in that city’s Rose Hill Cemetery.

Iris Belichis
Brown County native Iris L. Clark Belichis died Monday, September 20, 1999, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 90.
Mrs. Belichis was born January 12, 1909, in Nashville to Omer L. and Lena Bradley Clark.
She was married to Bill Belichis. He survives in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Belichis had worked at Westinghouse in Edinburgh for 10 years, retiring in 1971.
Other survivors include three daughters, Patricia Wagner Privert of Indianapolis, Jacquelyn Stevens Hudson of Clearwater Beach, Florida and Nancy Stevens LeRoy of Nashville; two step-sons; two step-daughters; a sister, Josephine Deaver of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild and three great-great-grandchildren.
A son, Richard Wagner; and two grandchildren preceded her in death.
A service was conducted Thursday morning, September 23, at Singleton and Herr Mortuary in Indianapolis.
Burial was in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.

Nellie Morrow
Nellie Morrow, the mother of Nashville resident Bruce Morrow, died Monday, September 6, 1999, at her son’s home in Brown County. A resident of Lawrence County, she was 76.
Mrs. Morrow was born August 12, 1923, in Kensworth, Bedfordshire, England to Arthur James and Lily Jane Roberts Allen.
She and Edward James Morrow were married September 24, 1949. He died July 8, 1990.
Mrs. Morrow was a homemaker. She also had been a professional knitter, operating the business from her home.
She had been a member of the Church of England and the Overseas War Brides Club.
Other survivors include another son, Mark Morrow of Brooklyn, New York; a sister, Betty Jane Bett Price of Mildenhall, England; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Morrow was preceded in death by her parents.
Charles Wright conducted a service Thursday, September 9, at Day and Carter Mortuary in Bedford.
Burial was in that city’s Beech Grove Cemetery.
Wanettia Roberts
Nelson Ridge Road resident Wanettia M. Roberts died Wednesday morning, September 22, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. She was 85.
Mrs. Roberts was born September 12, 1914, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Walter and Mable Lenore Rogers Cummings.
She and George Raymond Roberts were married December 29, 1935. He died January 8, 1988.
Mrs. Roberts had worked at Arvin Industries and the David R. Webb Company.
She had been a member of Brown County’s North Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lois A. Smith, Kathleen M. Brockman and Betty L. Cravens, all of Columbus; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by a son, Jack Roberts; a sister, Wanda Cain; three brothers, Roger Cummings, Marvin Cummings and Ivan Cummings; a granddaughter, Danita Smith; and a great-grandchild.
The Reverend Daryl Gressel led a service Saturday afternoon, September 25, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in Brown County Memorial Park Cemetery near the 4-H Fairgrounds.

Wilma G. Snider
Lifelong Morgantown resident Wilma G. Snider died Sunday, September 26, 1999 at the Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was 86.
She had been employed by Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson School Corporation in the cafeteria of Morgantown Elementary and Indian Creek High School during the 1960s. She had also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Arnold in Morgantown and at Camp Atterbury in 1946.
She and Harold R. Snider were married September 27, 1946 at the Morgantown Baptist Church. He survives in Morgantown.
Mrs. Snider was a member of the Morgantown Baptist Church for 74 years, and was a member of the Morgantown Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon and Charles Fesler; and three sisters, Irene Whitaker, Esther Fesler and Rema Fesler.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Cheryl Snider of Morgantown; a brother, Gwynn Fesler of Morgantown; and two grandchildren, Rachel Leigh Elmore and Ryan Snider.
The Reverend Ben Swopes will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 29, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown. Burial will take place at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

Paul C. Snyder
Lifelong Brown County resident and retired farmer Paul C. Snyder died Friday morning, September 24, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. He was 87.
Before moving into the care center, Mr. Snyder had lived on the road named for his family - Snyder Road.
He was born March 17, 1912, in Brown County to Charles Louie and Mary Olive Moore Snyder.
He and Anna Elizabeth Quil-liam were married January 30, 1937. She died November 26, 1996.
In addition to tending to duties on the family farm, Mr. Snyder also had worked as a plumber and electrician before retiring in 1976.
He had also been active in Brown County’s Democratic Party and in local governmental affairs. He had served as a member of the county council.
Mr. Snyder was the last of the charter members of the Brown County Lions Club.
He had been a member of the Nashville Christian Church and the Indiana Farm Bureau Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn DeWees of Nashville; a son, Charles W. Snyder of Nashville; a brother, Raymond Snyder of Arkansas; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Daryl Swearingen and Reverend Timothy Bond conducted a service Monday afternoon, September 27, at the Nashville Christian Church.
Burial was in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Voland
Former Brown County teacher Elizabeth Glick Voland died Tuesday, September 21, 1999, at the Todd-Aikens Health Center in Franklin. A resident of that city for more than 60 years, she was 88.
Mrs. Voland was born October 29, 1910, in Columbus to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Glick.
She was married to James A. Voland. He died July 9, 1996.
Mrs. Voland attended Columbus High School, graduating in 1928. She also attended Hanover College and earned a degree from Purdue University in 1933.
She taught vocational home economics and biology at the old Nashville High School from 1938 until 1943.
Before coming to teach in Brown County, she had taught at Clifford and Hope in Bartholomew County.
After leaving here, she taught in Johnson County starting at Center Grove. From 1953 until retiring from the classroom in 1983, she taught in the Franklin Community School Corporation.
Mrs. Voland had been a member of First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, where she was involved in the church’s charitable programs and Tri Kappa sorority.
She also had been active in 4-H.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Doris Crouch of Columbus; a brother-in-law, Dennis Lane; and two nephews, James J. Crouch of Houston, Texas and Joseph Wright of Bathesda, Maryland.
The Reverend Peter Jessen conducted a service Thursday morning, September 23, at the Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.

Lee Adams
Nashville resident Lee "LeRoy" Adams died Wednesday, September 27, 1999, at his home after a long illness. He was 62.
Mr. Adams was born January 16, 1937, in Brown County to Beckham and Ethel Kenyon Adams.
He was married to A. Catherine McCool. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Adams had worked as greenskeeper for the Brown County Country Club for 10 years. He was working as a custodian at Brown County High School.
He was a United States Army veteran.
Recently, a benefit golf tournament was held on behalf of Mr. Adams at the country club.
Other survivors include a son, John Lee Adams; a daughter, Faye Haynes; a step-daughter, Paula Mitchell; two brothers, Art Adams and Raymond Adams; two sisters, Mary Alee and Gladys Brewer; and three grandchildren.
A service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, October 15, at the Knights of Columbus at Indianapolis.
Singleton and Herr Mortuary in Indianapolis was in charge of arrangements.

Esther Armstrong
Brown County native Esther May Armstrong died Monday, September 27, 1999, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A resident of Edinburgh, she was 85.
Mrs. Armstrong was born June 14, 1914, in Brown County to Clarence and Anna Rhude Slevin.
She first married Lloyd Wheaton in December 1931. He died in December 1936. She and John Fletcher Armstrong were married February 27, 1940. He died February 1, 1993.
Mrs. Armstrong was a homemaker. She also had worked as a seamstress.
She enjoyed reading, cooking and gardening.
Mrs. Armstrong had been a member of the Edinburgh United Methodist Church, Rebekka Lodge, Edinburgh Business and Professional Women and Delta Theta Tau sorority.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Wheaton Hoeltke of Franklin; a brother, Samuel Slevin of Shelbyville; a sister, Gladys Phillips of Edinburgh; and two granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Slevin, Arthur Slevin and Harold Slevin; and two sisters, Violet Walden and Olive Stroup.
The Reverend Peter Jessen conducted a service Thursday morning, September 30, at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh.
Burial was in that city’s Rest Haven Cemetery.

Richard Bennett
Richard C. Bennett, a resident of Bear Wallow Hill Road, died Saturday morning, October 2, 1999, at the Brown County Community Care Center in Salt Creek Park. He was 73.
Mr. Bennett was born June 20, 1926, in Fort Wayne to Harrison and Margaret Bennett.
He was married to Janet Louise Gillian. She survives in Brown County.
Mr. Bennett had worked as a salesman at the Brown County True Value hardware store in Nashville.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include a son, Gregory Bennett of Nashville; a daughter, Susan Bennett of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Ruth Worley and Evelyn Montooth, both of Fort Wayne.
Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Chaplain Julie Miller conducted a private service.
The Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North was in charge of arrangements.

Earl Cannon
Hoover Road resident Earl "Dean" Cannon died Monday morning, September 27, 1999, at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was 72.
Mr. Cannon was born June 15, 1927, in Monticello, Illinois to Ebert and Ida Hurley Cannon.
He and Donna E. Robinson were married October 18, 1969. She survives in Brown County.
A former businessman, Mr. Cannon had owned Lucas Brothers Sandwich Shop and Deano’s Treasures.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include a son, Stephen R. Cannon of Columbus; five daughters, Donna S. Johnson and Toni R. Byrum, both of Manchester, Tennessee, Cheri L. Perkins of Columbus and Donna Henderson and Pamela Doty, both of Florida; a brother, Gene Bently of Illinois; two sisters, Sue Harris of Illinois and Sheila McCoppin of Nebraska; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cannon was preceded in death by two brothers and a great-granddaughter.
The Reverend Homer Whited led a service Thursday afternoon, September 30, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in that city’s Garland Brook Cemetery.
Wenonah Creek
Wenonah Jean Lawson Creek died Monday, October 4, 1999, at Heritage House Convalescent Center in Martinsville. She was 76.
Mrs. Cleek was born November 23, 1923 in Clay City to Jess E. Lawson and Julia D. Benham.
She was married to Robert M. Cleek on July 3, 1947 in New Castle. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1999.
Mrs. Cleek is a 1942 graduate of Van Buren High School in Clay County. She received her B.A. from Indiana State University in 1946 and her Masters from Indiana University in 1968.
She retired in 1983 after 22 years in the Martinsville School District at Green Township Elementary School, where she taught fourth grade.
She also taught in the Morgantown School District from 1951 to 1961 and in Henry County in 1946 until 1947.
Survivors include a son Robert E. Cleek of Dixon, California and one sister, Juanita Miller of Las Vegas, Nevada.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jess. E. Lawson, and a sister, Patty Lawson.
A service will be held today, Wednesday, October 6, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown. Pastor Wayne Tucker will officiate.
Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
