Jennie D. Day
Jennie D. Day died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Hospitality House. A resident of Nashville, she was 98.
Mrs. Day was born May 26, 1902, in Nashville, the daughter of the late Franklin and Angeline Richards Fritch.
She was married to Glenn Day, who preceded her in death on May 31, 1980.
She was retired and had worked at the former Wicks Department Store and the King Shop in Bloomington.
Mrs. Day was a member of West Second Street Church of Christ in Bloomington.
Russell E. Fisher
Nineveh resident Russell E. Fisher died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was 76.
Mr. Fisher was born March 23, 1924 in Circleville to Theodore and Edna Timmons Fisher. They preceded him in death.
He and Della L. Reed were married November 17, 1953, in Indianapolis. She survives.
Mr. Fisher served in the Civilian Conservation Corp during World War II.
He had been employed at the Brown County School system as a custodian.
Prior to that, he worked as a wrecker service driver for Jim Hicks Wrecker Service and Pennsyylvania Motor Inn in Indianapolis.
He also had worked for Boger Body Shop in Indianapolis.
Mr Fisher’s hobbies were hunting, fishing, puttering around in his garage and feeding and watching Humming birds.
Donald Leveque
Donald E. Leveque died Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 76.
Born on June 5, 1924 in Seneca, Illinois, his parents were George M. and Edith (Copenhaver) Leveque.
He married Jean A. Harris Lev-eque April 18, 1943 in Indianapolis. She preceded him in death.
He was employed by Conrail for 42 years as a locomotive engineer, retiring 1986. He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Greenwood Moose Lodge 2079 and Southside Turners.
Melvin Percy Phillips
Melvin Percy Phillips the brother of Spearsville resident Ralph Phillips, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Martinsville, he was 82.
Mr. Phillips was born April 22, 1918, in Petersburg, the son of the late Frank and Norah Sexsmith Phillips.
He married Nova Hamilton in 1943, who preceded him in death in 1968.
He retired in 1970 from Arvin Automotive in Franklin where he was employed for 36 years.
Mr. Phillips was a member of American Legion Post 88 and VFW Ernie Pyle Post in Indianapolis and attended many senior citizen clubs.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, where he was honorably discharged in June 1943.
Gladys Rodgers
Brown County native Gladys M. Rodgers died Friday June 23, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. A resident of Trevlac, she was 87.
She was born May 9, 1913 to Frank A. and Ola Hawley Warford.
She had been employed at RCA in Bloomington for 39 years, retiring in 1978.
She was graduated from Teachers Col-lege in Normal, Illinois.
Mrs. Rodgers had also taught in a one-room school for a short time.
A member of Oblong Christian Church in Oblong, Illinois, she attended Bear Creek Church in Brown County.
Her hobbies included traveling, flower and vegetable gardening and going to auctions. She especially enjoyed doing genealogy research.
Thelma W. ‘Johnny’ Routier
Thelma W. "Johnny" Routier died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Brown County Community Care Center. A resident of Columbus, she was 83.
Ms. Routier was born November 5, 1916, in Monroe County, the daughter of the late Thomas Arthur and Alta Mae Lewis Ritter.
She married Clarence Routier in Franklin on November 5, 1946. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1998.
Ms. Routier worked for Cummins Engine Company during World War II. She was in charge of salads and desserts.in the dietary department at Four Season Retirement Center in the middle 1970s.
She was a member of the Stitch and Stir Homemakers Club in Columbus. She also was a member of Berean Bible Church and the CREAK Club.
She was a poet and had many poems published in the Republic newspaper over the years.
She also helped establish the Headstart Program in Bartholomew County.
Hiram Sizemore
Hiram Sizemore died Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at his residence in Trafalgar. He was 80.
He was born August 8, 1919 to Millard and Luellen Napier Sizemore in Manchester, Kentucky. He married Alta Mae Smithon April 12, 1946, in Manchester, Kentucky. She preceded him in death February 2, 1977.
He was employed for thirty years through the Local 120 Laborer and Hod Carriers Union for different companies before retiring in 1973.
Mr. Sizemore was a member of Franklin American Legion Post, Local 120 Laborer and Hod Carriers Union and Friendship Christian Church in Morgantown.
His hobbies were gun collecting and trading and coon hunting.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Catherine T. Rodenreider Smith
Catherine T. Rodenreider Smith died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Brown County Community Care Center. She was 91.
Ms. Smith was born June 28, 1908, in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late Camille Rodenreider and Katy Johantqes Rodenreider.
She was an employee of Bemis Bag Company, a homemaker and a gardener.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Needmore Homemakers Club. She was also a 4-H leader.
Lois Whitaker
Lois V. Whitaker, the mother of Nashville resident Wayne T. Whitaker, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Greenwood Village South Pavilion. A resident of Greenwood, she was 92.
She was born September 24, 1907, in Somerset Kentucky, the daughter of Miles and Isabelle Sears Price .
She and Charles Gilbert Whitaker were married June 13, 1925. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Whitaker was a member of Greenwood Christian Church and a longtime volunteer at Riley Hospital for Children. She received an award for her work with the hospitalized children.
Other survivors include three sons, Donald E. Whitaker of Russellville, Alabama, William E. Whitaker of Manteca, California and James G. Whitaker of Whiteland; a daughter, Judith Key of Greenwood; a brother, Edward Price of Danville; a sister, Edna Schnier of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
Harry Collins Sr.
Brown County native Harry A. Collins died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his home. A resident of Bloomington, he was 74.
Mr. Collins was born July 9, 1925, in Brown County, the son of Allen Albert and Tillie Mae Wilson Collins.
He was a retired self-employed laborer and an army veteran in the Korean War.
Survivors include two daughters, Tillie Algood of Bloomington and Flossie Mobley of Solsberry; two sons, Glen Collins of Carrier Mills, Illinois, and Harry Collins Jr. of Bloomington; two sisters, Corea Abbott of Martinsville and Lizzie Butler of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
William Jenkins Jr.
William S. Jenkins Jr., the half brother of county resident Penny Smith, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his home in Ashfork, Arizona. He was 41.
Mr. Jenkins was born December 6, 1958, in Indianapolis to Ruth E. Mount Whitis of Columbus and the late William S. Jenkins.
He had been a long-haul truck driver for Hoosier Air Transport in Taylorsville and Mount Trucking.
Ronald Littiken
Ronald "Blackberry" Littiken, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of South State Road 58, he was 58.
He was born in Columbus July 9, 1941, to Harold and June Olmstead Littiken. They preceded him in death.
He and Lynne M. Stiliha were married December 27, 1997. She survives.
A brick mason with Dunlap and Company for 27 years, Mr. Littiken was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Union.
He also was a member of Ogilville United Methodist Church.
Robert Robinson Jr.
Lick Creek Road resident Robert E. Robinson Jr. died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at his residence. He was 66.
Mr. Robinson was born September 15, 1933, in Indianapolis to Robert E. and Mae Burge Robinson. They preceded him in death.
A graduate of Helmsburg High School, Mr. Robinson also was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.
He and Ruth G. Asher were married September 18, 1993, in Brown County. She survives.
Mr. Robinson was retired, but had worked for Maddox Construction Company in Indianapolis and Rogers Group in Bloomington.
He also refinished furniture.
Mr. Robinson enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Irene Seacat
Nineveh resident Irene Seacat died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. She was 60.
She was born April 14, 1940, in Bonny Blue, Virginia, to Homer and Delia Everso Proffitt.
She and Jim Seacat were married November 22, 1958, in Indianapolis. He survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Seacat was a member of First Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Franklin.
Ralph E. Wrightsman
Trafalgar native Ralph E. Wrightsman died Friday, June 30, 2000, . A resident of Mooresville, he was 73.
Mr. Wrightsman was born August 14, 1926, in Trafalgar to Clarence and Opal Wise Wrightsman. They preceded him in death.
He and Alma Lynn Wrightsman were married September 21, 1951. She survives.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
Before retiring in 1986, Mr. Wrightsman was a receiving clerk at Western Electric in Indianapolis for 35 years.
Betty S. Bonnet France Allen
Betty S. Bonnet France Allen, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A resident of Nineveh, she was 58.
Mrs. Allen was married to Donald Allen. He survives.
A former resident of Southport and Davie, Florida, she worked for the past 11 years as a salesperson in contractor sales for Home Depot in Davie.
C. LaVonne Coldren
C. LaVonne Thompson Coldren, formerly of Nashville, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Franklin United Methodist Community, where she has been a resident for 10 years. She was 92.
Mrs. Coldren was born June 7, 1908, in Princess Ann, Massachusetts, to Alonzo and Lona May Sherrill Thompson.
She married George David Coldren May 1, 1932. He preceded her in death on September 19, 1988.
She was a 1925 graduate of Emmerich Manual Tech High School and a 1929 graduate of Indiana Central College.
She was an art and music teacher of Perry Township for 42 years, retiring in 1971.
