Octa L. Smith
Greasy Creek Road resident Octa L. Smith died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Brown County Community Care Center. Formerly of Bedford and New Jersey, she was 85.
She was born February 1, 1915, in Fayetteville, Tennessee, to Frank and Maggie Tucker Reed.
A homemaker, she was a member of Nashville’s New Life Community Church.

Edward Snyder
Daugherty Road resident Edward "Pete" Leon Snyder died July 17, 2000, at his home. He was 69.
Mr. Snyder was born October 8, 1930, in Brown County to Frank Joseph and Ruth Moore Snyder.
He was a stone worker for 30 years at Meshberger Stone Flat Rock Plant.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Westport.

Evan Taylor
Evan James Taylor, the grandson of county veterinarian James Brester and his wife, Paulette, drown Thursday, July 6, 2000, while on vacation in Tennessee with his family. He was 11.
He was born August 17, 1988, to Michael and Teresa Taylor. They survive on the south side of Indianapolis.
He was a high-honors student at St. Mark Elemen-tary School.
He was a CYO city champion in track and a member of the school’s soccer and football teams.
Evan had qualified to compete at the regional Junior Olympics.

Laurence Boles
Brown County Native Laurence Harley Boles died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at The Waters of Martinsville.
A resident of Brooklyn, he was 84.
He was born July 2, 1916, in Brown County, to Harley Allen and Edith Mae Lakin Boles.
He and Gleda Mae Kinkade were married in 1938. She died in February 1990.
Mr. Boles was employed as a carpenter for the Local 60 Carpenters Union in Indianapolis for 40 years.
He was a Past Master at Brooklyn Masonic Lodge 471, and was active in the Mooresville Senior Center.
A member of Brooklyn Christian Church, Mr. Boles was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1946.

Faye Gorbett
Faye Gorbett, the sister of Freetown resident Donald Hatton, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Heritage House of Seymour. She was 77.
She was born March 19, 1923, to John Henry and Ressie J. Hatton, they preceded her in death.
A member of Brown County’s Mount Nebo United Methodist Church, she had been ill for several months.
Ms. Gorbett worked at Panasote in Seymour for 22 years, retiring in 1990.

Thomas Loser Jr.
Thomas K. Loser, the son of Nashville resident Judith Patterson, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at his residence in Gospert. He was 33.
He was born April 3, 1967, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Thomas K. Loser and Judith Custer Patterson. They both survive.
He and Joanna O’Connor were married, she survives.
Mr. Loser was a self-employed jeweler.

Nellie Ellison Martin
Nineveh resident Nellie Ellison Martin died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Johnson Memorial Hospital. She was 57.
She was born January 20, 1943, in Casey County, Kentucky. Her father was Delbert Ellison. Her Mother, Manilla Smith Ellison survives in Yosemite, Kentucky.
She and Ottis Earl Martin were married June 22, 1959. He survives.
A graduate of Middleburg High School in Middleburg, Kentucky, she was employed as a forklift operator at Arvin North American Automotive in Franklin for 24 years.
She also was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Christian Church in Yosemite, Kentucky.

Randy B. McClurg
Randy B. McClurg, the brother of Bean Blossom resident Gary McClurg, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 57.
He was born August 11, 1942, in Carthage to Markes and Mary Ellen Winkler McClurg.
He attended Ball State University and was graduated from Indiana University.
He worked for 32 years in the finance department of General Electric in Bloomington.
Mr. McClurg was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, where he had been executive director and stewardship director.
He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma and was the 1992 Bloomington Softball Hall of Fame manager.

James C. McCoy
James C. "Pete" McCoy died Saturday, July 22, 2000, while at the A.B.A.T.E. Boogie in Bean Blossom. A resident of Trafalgar, he was 37.
Mr. McCoy was born November 23, 1962, in Bloomington to Lawrence A. "Speedy" McCoy and Nancy R. Jarboe Marlett, they both survive.
He and Peggy J. Elmore were married . She survives.
He had been a machinist at Franklin Power Products for six years. Prior to that he was a machinist for Rose Engineering of Indianapolis for 10 years.

George G. Ragsdale
Trafalgar resident George G. Ragsdale died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at his residence. He was 92.
Mr. Ragsdale was born May 4, 1908, in Johnson County to Clarence D. and Pina Smith Ragsdale.
He and Margaret M. Morgan were married July 3, 1928, in Independence, Missouri. She survives.
A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Ragsdale served in Company A, 302nd Signal Operations Battalion during World War II.
Mr. Ragsdale had been an auctioneer since high school, retiring in 1984.
He also had owned his on real estate company from 1963 until 1984.

Shirley E. Simon
Shirley E. Simon, the wife of former Brown County school superintendent Callison H. Simon, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Bloomington, she was 71.
She was born July 29, 1928, in Indianapolis to George A. and Pearl M. Pine Edwards.
A retired school teacher, she taught at University Elementary School for 25 years.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband; a son, James E. Simon of Bloomington; a daughter, Catherine E. Ehrhardt of Fort Wayne; and a grandson.

Bernice Andres
Bernice Troup Andres, the mother of Nashville resident Patricia Alberts, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at the Jasper County Hospital Alternacare Unit. She was 84.
She was born October 31, 1915, in Spencer County to Sherman and Lula Hager.
A former resident of Remington, she was a member of the United Meth-odist Church, Tri Kappa, Order of Eastern Star and Dorcus Club.
A homemaker, she had been a secretary of the South Newton School Corporation, prior to her retirement.
Other survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Knochel or Normal, Illinois; a step-son, Richard Andres of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Susan Fleener of Nashville; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, in 1956; her second husband, in 1980; a sister; and two grandsons.
Mr. Gerald Knochel officiated a service Thursday, July 27, 2000, at the Stitz Funeral Home in Remington. Interment followed in the Remington Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s choice of charities.

Lowell Campbell
Brown County native Lowell A. "Pappy" Campbell died Wednes-day, July 26, 2000, at the Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. A resident of Knightsville, he was 99.
He was born April 10, 1901, to Hiram and K. Elizabeth (Lanum) Campbell.
A crane and steam shovel operator for Ralph Rogers Construction in Bloomington, he retired in 1971. Mr. Campbell had also worked for Big Ben Coal Company in Brazil.
He was a member and trustee of First Baptist Church in Brazil and a member of Ellettsville Baptist Church.
He also was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841.
Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Guyer of Brazil; a brother, Edwin Campbell of Bloomington; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, in 1957; his second wife, in 1995; two sisters and a brother.
The Reverend Richard McShanog officiated a service Saturday, July 29, at French Funeral Home in Brazil. Burial was in Bowling Green’s Fairview Cemetery.

Charles Dowell
Nashville resident Charles W. Dowell died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Brown County Community Care Center. He was 71.
Mr. Dowell was born August 30, 1928, in Valparaiso to Marvin and Jennie (McGuire) Dowell.
A truck driver, Mr. Dowell retired from the Bradenton Florida police department.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of VFW post 6195.
Survivors include a brother, Paul Dowell of Nashville; two sisters, Rosemary Owens and Wilma Hale of Nashville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great newphes.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
The Reverend Tim Bond will conduct a service this morning, Wednesday, August 2, at 11 a.m. in the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.

Robert Dyer Sr.
Nineveh resident Robert Dale Dyer Sr. died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital Health Centers in Beech Grove. He was 67.
He was born November 13, 1932, in Hendricks County to Leo Comer and Cora (Cloyd) Dyer.
He worked for Bridgeport Brass in Indianapolis as a journeyman for 33 years, retiring in 1989.
Survivors include four sons, Robert Dale Dyer of Martinsville, Randall Lee Dyer of Centerton, Kevin Earl Dyer of Morgantown and Kim Comer Dyer of Quincy; a daughter, Dawn M. Goodin of Mooresville; two brothers Ronald Dyer of Michigan and Arnett Dyer of Martinsville; two sisters, Mable Peedin of Mooresville and Gladys Corish of Greenwood; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
The Reverend Jeff Faull conducted a service Sunday, July 23, at Carlisle and Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville. Burial was in Centerton Cemetery in Centerton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Roy R. Shelton
Roy R. Shelton, the father of Hickory Drive resident Tom Shelton, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. A resident of Greenwood, he was 76.
He was born August 20, 1923, in Bedford, Kentucky, to Leonard and Hallie (Ellis) Shelton.
He and Betty J. Reed were married April 5, 1946, in Madison. She survives.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
A machine repairman at Ford Motor Company for 31 years, he retired in 1988.
Mr. Shelton was a member of Suburban Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Greenwood American Legion Post 252 and United Auto Workers.
Other survivors include three sons, Kenneth Shelton of Greenwood, Delbert Shelton of Indianapolis and Rick Shelton of Seymour; a daughter, Carolyn Krivulka of Ind-ianapolis; a brother, Ralph Shelton of Marion; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pastor Joe Marcello conducted a service Monday, July 24, at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
