James Stillabower
Brown County native James David "Dave" Stillabower died Wednesday, July 26, as the result of an accident at Prince’s Lakes. A resident of Nineveh, he was 60.
He was born May 5, 1940, to Lawrence and Dorothea Stillabower.
He and Donna L. (Harmon) Series were married April 3, 1982. She survives.
Mr. Stillabower was employed by MCL Cafeterias as a maintenance engineer for 20 years, retiring in 1995.
He was president of the Prince’s Lakes Planning Commission and was on the Board of Zoning Appeals for the community.
Other survivors include four sons, David Michael Stillabower of Bullhead, Arizona, Steven Stillabower of Greenwood, Robert Joseph Stillabower of Florida and Gary Allen Series of Franklin; two daughters, Angela K. Willis of Rossville and Lisa Deann Series of Franklin; a family friend, Carrie Glover of Franklin; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
The Reverend Norman Palmer officiated a service Saturday, July 29, at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was in that city’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
Evelyn Thompson
Evelyn Wilson Thompson, the mother of Nashville resident David Wilson, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Four Seasons Health Care Center in Columbus. She was 76.
She was born November 30, 1923, in Owen County to the Reverend Loy E. and Bessie (Thomas) Rentschler.
Mrs. Thompson was graduated from Clay City High School and attended Terre Haute Business College.
She married Charles Wilson July 21, 1944. He died April 5, 1977.
She then married Floyd Thompson June 25, 1983. He died September 27, 1995.
She worked in the accounting department at Hills Department Store, retiring in 1987.
Other survivors include two sons, Roger Wilson of Glendale, Arizona and Donald Wilson of DeKalb, Illinois; two daughters, Sharon Owens and Patricia Shepherd, both of Columbus; two brothers, Bill Rentschler of Bloomfield and Merl Rentschler of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
The Reverend Robert W. Langdon officiated a service Tuesday, August 1, at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel in Columbus. Burial was in Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County.
Oddis Timbrook
Oddis Timbrook, the uncle of Brown County resident Marvin E. Gorbett, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Columbus, Mr. Timbrook was 85.
He was born September 24, 1914, in Bartholomew County to James Elmer and Edna J. (Manuel) Timbrook.
He and Nellie V. Spurgeon were married February 24, 1945, in Columbus. She died February 25, 1975.
An educator for 40 years, Mr. Timbrook taught in Nashville, Taylorsville and in East Columbus.
He received his Bachelors degree in education from Hanover College, and his Masters degree from Butler University.
He was principal at Mt. Auburn Elementary School and retired as a principal in the Southwestern School District.
Mr. Timbrook also coached basketball in Nashville and Taylorsville.
He had several hobbies including basketball, fishing, hunting and trapping.
During the summer months, while school was not in session, Mr. Timbrook did foundry work and painted houses.
Mr. Timbrook was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Brown County, First Baptist Church in Freetown, the Indiana State Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana Sheriff’s Association.
Other survivors include three nephews, Kenneth V. Gorbett of Freetown, and Leon G. Gorbett and Tony W. Timbrook of Columbus; and a niece, Nancy Wilkerson of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
The Reverend Joe Caplinger officiated a service Monday, July 31, at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel in Columbus.
Burial was in that community’s Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Freetown or the donor’s choice of charity.
Robert York
Morgantown resident Robert Eugene York died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his residence. He was 70.
Mr. York was born April 16, 1930, in Morgantown to Soloman Paris and Bessie Marie (Prather) York.
He and Edna M. Smith were married June 9, 1951, in Fall River, Massachusetts. She died October 6, 1989.
He then married Ada Marie Cowden Duhamell on April 26, 1991. She survives.
A 1948 graduate of Morgantown High School, Mr. York served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed at Twigg Corporation of Martinsville for 10 years, retiring in 1982 due to kidney failure.
Prior to that, he worked as a tool and die maker at Tube Processing In Indianapolis.
A member of Morgantown Assembly of Cod Church, he had been a Sunday school teacher for 10 years.
Mr. York enjoyed bike riding, mushroom hunting, cooking and Bible reading.
Other survivors include three daughters, Jennifer Jane McQueen of Mesa, Arizona, Rebecca Kay York and Linda Sue York, both of Martinsville; a son, Thomas Bruce York of Martinsville; three step-daughters, Angela Marie Smith of Morgantown, Kandy Dillon and Sandy McKean of Fort Wayne; two step-sons, Robert Lee Duhamell of Morgantown and Randy Duhamell of Auburn; two sisters, Rachel Boggs and Marti Miller, both of Fort Myers, Florida; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, a sister, and a step-son.
Dr. Mike Bell and the Reverend Gene McClain officiated a service Friday, July 28, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
Edgar L. Bradley
Brown County native Edgar L. Bradley died on Thursday, August 10, 2000, at his residence in Bloomington. He was 66.
Mr. Bradley was born January 25, 1934, to Ivory Scott and Bertha Frances (Ayres) Bradley.
He was a supervisor at Indiana University, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of Duncan Pentecostal Church in Brown County and an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.
He was also a member of Masonic Temple Monroe Lodge No. 22, F and AM, the Murat Temple in Indianapolis, the York Rite and the Shriners.
Violetta L. Bryant
Violetta L. (Young) Richardson Bryant died Saturday, August 5, 2000. A resident of Greenwood, she was 94.
She was born April 29, 1906, in Jonesboro to Alfred and Pearl (Bixler) Young.
She married Ernest Richardson in September 1923 in Nashville. He preceded her in death.
She then married Jack Bryant in November 1969 in Nineveh. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bryant owned and acted as landlord of several rental properties and was employed by P.R. Mallory from 1942 until her retirement in 1966.
Lelia C. Clay
Nashville resident Lelia C. Clay died Sunday, August 6, 2000, at Bloomington Convalescent Center. She was 96.
She was born March 1, 1904, in Hamilton County to Charles and Sarah Pfaff.
A homemaker, Mrs. Clay attended Belmont Pentecostal Church.
Vernon Cummings
Blue Creek Road resident Vernon E. Cummings died Monday, August 7, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. He was 81.
Mr. Cummings was born October 22, 1918, in Lebanon to Thomas J. and Sindie Cummings.
He and Ella Kathryn Noble were married. She died January 6, 1995.
A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Mr. Cummings served in the southern Philippines, Luzon and New Guinea.
He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrowhead; the American Theater Ribbon; American Defense Service Medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star; a Good Conduct Ribbon and a World War II Victory Medal.
Olive Fleetwood
Brown County native Olive Blanche (Floyd) Fleetwood died Thursday, August 10, 2000, at Franklin Meadows. A resident of Franklin, she was 84.
She was born February 8, 1916, to John L. and Lydia Mae (Snyder) Floyd.
She married Ansil Fleetwood August 4, 1937, in Greenwood. He preceded her in death February 1, 1973.
Mrs. Fleetwood had been a housekeeper at Franklin’s Indiana Masonic Home.
Survivors include five nieces, Lucille J. Smith of Franklin, Betty E. Allen of Mooresville, Maggie Brewer of Martinsville, Hazel M. Haase of Morgantown and Peggy R. Dell of Burleson, Texas; and two nephews, Fred J. Surber Jr. of Shasta Lake, California and Kevin Floyd of Ohio.
Loren Dean Franz
Loren Dean Franz, the brother of Nashville resident John Franz, died Sunday, August 6, 2000, at Henryville. He was 67.
Mr. Franz was retired from Golden Rule Insurance.
Other survivors include his mother, Martha Martens Franz of Columbus; and another brother, Dr. Sherman Franz of Columbus.
James R. Kennedy
Nashville native James Robert Kennedy died Saturday, August 5, 2000, following a long illness.
Mr. Kennedy was born on December 24, 1943, to the late Gratton and Bea Kennedy of Nashville.
He was married to Betty Merritt on May 23, 1999. She survives.
Virginia Ellen Lucas
Virginia Ellen (Voils) Lucas, the sister of Homestead Road resident Wallace Voils, died Thursday, August 3, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Indianapolis, she was 75.
She was born November 27, 1924, to Alex and Artie (Martin) Voils.
She and Lester B. Lucas Sr. were married. He survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Lucas was a member of Eastside Mission of Southside Baptist Church.
Esther Mathews
Esther M. Mathews, a former first-grade teacher in Brown County, died Friday, August 11, 2000, at her residence in Bloomington. She was 55.
She was born June 16, 1945, in Columbus to Earnest and Nellie West. She married Stephen K. Mathews. He survives.
Mrs. Mathews was a member of Bloomington’s Free Methodist Church.
Margaret M. Ragsdale
Margaret M. Ragsdale died Sunday, August 13, 2000 at her residence in Trafalgar. She was 93.
Mrs. Ragsdale was born in Saline County, Missouri March 29, 1907, to Joseph Thompson and Iona Custer Morgan.
She married George G. Ragsdale July 2, 1928, in Independence, Missouri. He died July 18, 2000.
A homemaker, Mrs. Ragsdale had also worked with her husband as a real estate sales person in George G. Ragsdale Realty and Auction Service in Trafalgar. The couple owned and operated the company from 1963 to 1984 when they retired. They also owned the Ivy Motel in Stockton, California from 1950 until 1963 and they also an auction house in California.
William E. Riskey
Ski World owner William E. "Bill" Riskey died Monday, August 7, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Upper Schooner Road, he was 72.
Mr. Riskey was born May 7, 1927, in Ypsilanti, Michigan to Earl and Geneva (Bond) Riskey.
He was graduated from An Arbor High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1948.
He attended the University of Michigan and was graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1951.
Having first skied in 1940, Mr. Riskey was the Michigan State Slalom Champion in 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1962.
Norma Stephens
Nashville resident Norma J. Stephens died Thursday, August 10, 2000, at the Brown County Com-munity Care Center. She was 82.
Ms. Stephens was born January 10, 1918, in Indianapolis to James and Leila (Brown) Goldsberry.
She was retired in 1980 from National Tea Company in Indianapolis.
She was a member of the Brown County Historical Society and past president of Pioneer Women in Nashville.
