Austin Sylvester
Austin E. Sylvester died Friday, August 11, 2000, at the Brown County Community Care Center. A resident of Columbus, he was 94.
Mr. Sylvester was born February 28, 1906, in Monroe County to Alonzo "Lon" and Effie L. Clark Sylvester.
He married Estalla M. Jones August 28, 1927. She died July 16, 1996.
Mr. Sylvester had owned A and E Grocery Store for many years.
He also was a trader and former employee of Southwest Bartholomew County Water Company.
Otis M. Downs
Nashville resident Reverend Otis M. Downs died Wednesday, August 16, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was 83.
Mr. Downs was born October 1, 1916, in Newport to Leander and Nancy Ellen (Maxwell) Downs.
He was a minister at Church of the Nazarene from 1959 until 1986, where he was both a member and an elder.
James Paul Elkins
Doctor James Paul Elkins died Friday evening, August 18, 2000, at his daughter, Paulette Rhinesmith’s, home on Lanam Ridge Road.
A resident of Indianapolis, he was 76.
He was born March 20, 1924, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to James H. and Antonia (Wohle) Elkins.
He and May Reynolds were married June 15, 1946, at the University of Virginia Chapel. She survives.
Mr. Elkins received his medical degree from the Uni-versity of Virginia in 1947.
Specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, Mr. Elkins practiced medicine in Indianapolis from 1954 until 1971. He was chief of obstetrics and gynecology at St. Francis Hos-pital in Beech Grove in 1965 and 1966.
Mildred E. Greathouse
Brown County native Mildred E. Greathouse died Sunday, August 20, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Bartholomew County, she was 88.
She was born July 26, 1912, to Sylvanis and Sarah (Ayers) Sullivan.
She and Ora Greathouse were married May 28, 1932. He died September 16, 1988.
Mrs. Greathouse was a member of the Nazarene Church and worked at a shirt factory for 28 years before retiring.
Dana Danielle Heller
Dana Danielle Heller died Thursday, August 17, 2000, at Community South Hospital.
She was born August 17, 2000, at Community South Hospital to Trafalgar residents Rick and Tisha Danielle Huss Heller. They survive.
Riley Prince Raney
Nineveh resident Riley Prince Raney died Monday, August 14, 2000, at Franklin Meadows. She was 85.
She was born on October 25, 1914, in Hartford, Kentucky, to Otis D. and Filydia (Foster ) Carson.
She was married to Floyd Raney on November 9, 1964. He survives.
She was a member of the Nineveh Christian Church and attended Franklin Church of the Nazarene.
In her younger years, Mrs. Raney worked as a telephone operator and cafeteria manager. In the late 1950s, she worked with her husband in the development phase of what is now the town of Prince’s Lakes. Later, she worked in Franklin as a pattern maker for Beaunit Mills and Kayjee, retiring about 1979. After retirement, her interests centered on family and gardening.
Alma Etta Riggs
Alma Etta Riggs, the aunt of Nashville residents Linda Pearson and Janey McCarthy, died Friday, August 18, 2000, at her nephew’s, Patrick K. "Skip" Fry, home. A resident of North Vernon, she was 82.
Mrs. Riggs was born in Jennings County May 8, 1918, to James A. and Hazel Mae Smith Fry.
She married Donald E. Riggs in 1955. He survives.
Mrs. Riggs attended San Jacinto High School in Jennings County.
A member of Vernon Baptist Church, she was employed as a waitress at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago for 12 years, retiring in 1980.
Nettie White
Brown County native Nettie White died Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Columbus, she was 94.
She was born March 4, 1906, to William Edward and Martha Elizabeth (Petro) Lucas.
Her husband, Pete White, died in 1950.
Austin David Wilkerson
Trafalgar resident Austin David Wilkerson died at his residence on Tuesday, August 15, 2000, after a battle with cancer. He was 5.
He was born October 8, 1994, in Johnson County to Brian and Susan (Lewis) Wilkerson of Trafalgar.
I. Russell Young
Helmsburg native I. Russell Young died Friday, August 18, 2000, at Franklin Meadows Health Care Center in Franklin. A resident of Bargersville, he was 77.
Mr. Young was born June 20, 1923, to Omer A. and Ruby Ellen (Fishel) Young.
He was graduated from Helmsburg High School in 1943.
Betty Ann Andrews
Betty Ann Andrews, the aunt of Brown County resident Robert Jacobs, died Sunday, August 20, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center. A resident of Bloomington, she was 67.
She was born December 8, 1932, in Bloomington, to James Franklin and Penelope (Hamlin) Andrews.
A retired elementary school teacher, Mrs. Andrews had taught at schools in Illinois and California.
Ronald Fred Harter
Ronald Fred "Ron" Harter, the father of Nashville resident Ronald Harter Jr., died Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at his home in Astatula, Florida.
Mr. Harter, 64, also maintained a home in Brown County.
He was born in Washington, Iowa, January 15, 1936.
A member of AmVets, Mr. Harter retired from the U.S. Navy in 1972.
He also was a service engineer for Coen Company in Burlingame, California for 22 years.
Mr. Harter was of the Catholic Faith.
Faye S. Lewis
Faye S. Lewis, the mother of Bean Blossom resident Nina Jo McDonald, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at the Brown County Community Care Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Lewis was born February 13, 1916, in Monroe County to Harry K. and Murel (May) Smith.
She and Perry Arthur Lewis, Jr. were married December 25, 1937. He died in May 1983.
A 1934 graduate of Martinsville High School, she was a member of Alaska Christian Church in Lewisville.
She and her husband owned the Lewisville Store from 1940 until 1983.
Harry Sering Sr.
Former Brown County resident Harry Sering Sr. died at his residence in Greenwood Saturday, August 19, 2000. He was 76.
He was married to Helen (Cavazos) Sering. She survives.
Mr. Sering was the owner and operator of a business specializing in crystals, minerals and shells. He and his wife opened their first store on East Michigan Street in Indianapolis in 1963.
In 1972, the couple moved to Brown County and opened the Rock and Shell Shop. Eventually, they changed the name of the business to The Nature House and remained here for 24 years before retiring in 1996.
Morrison Barnsfather
Morgantown resident Morrison Clinton Barnsfather died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis. He was 70.
He was born in Pleasureville, Kentucky, January 14, 1930, the son on Charles Joseph and Iva Ruth (Nelson) Barnsfather.
He and Martha Mae Baker were married July 17, 1970. She survives.
An Army veteran on the Korean Conflict, Mr. Barnsfather retired in 1992 from the David R. Webb Company in Edinburgh where he had worked for 14 years.
Kermit Crabtree
Kermit Quentin "Joe" Crabtree, the half brother of Nashville resident Rudy Crabtree, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000. A resident of Sellersburg, he was 78.
A native of Monroe County, Kentucky, he had 25 years of service as an Indiana State Police Trooper.
Mr. Crabtree served in the US Navy from 1941 until 1947 as an aviation machinist’s mate.
He retired from Pillsbury in New Albany after working 14 years as a security guard.
Mr. Crabtree was a member of Pioneers of Indiana State Police, Indiana State Police Alliance and American Legion Post 204.
He was a Kentucky Colonel and attended Sellersburg First Baptist Church.
Laura R. Gordon
Former Morgantown resident Laura R. Gordon died Monday, August 28, 2000, while visiting her daughter in Columbia, Missouri. A resident of Mooresville, she was 93.
She was born September 23, 1906, in Marshfield, Missouri to Charles and Adella Mackey Ward.
She and Dill Gordon were married January 30, 1932, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death in 1963.
Mrs. Gordon had been employed as a cook at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis and as a baker at Sears Bakery in Indianapolis during the 1950s.
A homemaker, Mrs. Gordon loved fishing and baking pies.
Mrs. Gordon was a member of General Assembly and Church of the First Born in Morgantown.
Marcus Merriman
Marcus W.D. Merriman, father of Nashville resident LouAnne Hasch, died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Columbus, he was 82.
Mr. Merriman was born in Garden City August 31, 1918, to John D. and Luella (Reed) Merriman.
He married Martha J. Headley Starkey on August 21, 1964. She survives.
Mr. Merriman retired from Cummins Engine Company.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Methodist church and attended Garden City Church of Christ.
Mary A. Sherrill
Former Morgantown resident Mary A. Sherrill died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. A resident of Silver Springs, Florida, she was 71.
She was born in Parke County August 26, 1929, to Oscar and Cleo (Gilman) Kelsheimer.
She and Herbert A. Sherrill were married August 10, 1954, in Louisville. He survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Sherrill had also been employed at Amos Veneer Company in Edinburgh.
She attended the Morgantown Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sherrill enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting and working jig saw puzzles.
