Mary Evelyn Thompson
Becks Grove Resident Mary Evelyn Thompson died Friday, October 6, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 75.
She was born June 29, 1925 in Shelbyville to Alvin Wade and Emmy Nugent Bush.
She and James R. Thompson were married May 2, 1942 in Columbus. He survives.
Mrs. Thompson worked as the secretary for Four Way Termite Control for 30 years.
She attended Mount Nebo United Methodist Church in southern Brown County.
Other survivors include three sons, Larry and Jerry Thompson, both of Brown County, and Gary Thompson of Springfield, Missouri; three daughters, Mary Wood of Freetown, and Cherry Jaggers and Terrie Frodge, both of Columbus; two brothers, Morris and Jessie Bush, both of Columbus; 22 grandchildren, including Dawn Combs of Indianapolis, whom Mr. and Mrs. Thompson raised; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Thompson; two daughters, Patricia Thompson and Sherry Dobbs; a granddaughter, Monica Dobbs; a brother, Walter "Pete" Bush; and a great-grandson.
Reverend Dave Ison officiated a service Tuesday, October 10, at Myers Funeral Service Reed and Jewel Chapel in Columbus.
Burial was in Shelby County’s Lewis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Nebo United Methodist Church.
Don Williams
Becks Grove Road resident Don Richard "Jumbo" Williams died Saturday, October 7, 2000. He was 71.
Mr. Williams was born April 2, 1929, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Charles Oakley and Helen Elouise Broadus.
He and Ida LaVerne Williams Moore were married July 16, 1962. She survives.
Mr. Williams had been the owner of Jumbo’s Video in Brown County and had retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1987.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, serving from 1951 until 1953.
An avid bowler, Mr. Williams also enjoyed stock car racing.
Other survivors include two sons, Timothy Allen Moore of Freetown and Don R. Williams of Seymour; and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ian Williams and a granddaughter, Melissa Williams.
Reverend Roy Hendershot will officiate a memorial service at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, October 11, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home, just north of Nashville.
Interment will be at a later date.
Alice C. Coy
Morgantown resident Alice C. Coy died Thursday, October 19, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. She was 62.
She was born May 2, 1938, in Greenwood, the daughter of Hubert W. and Sarah "Sally" W. Jackson Barrett.
She was employed at the Methodist Home in Franklin; had been an executive assistant at Central Rubber and Supply in Indianapolis; and had worked in the Child Support Division of the Marion County Prosecutor’s office from 1992 until 1997.
Ellen Decker
Morgantown area resident Ellen Decker died Thursday, October 19, 2000, at her home. She was 68.
She was born September 1, 1932, in Mount Victory, Kentucky to Carl and Doshie Freeman Hyden.
She and Lawrence N. "Bud" Decker were married October 10, 1950, in Georgia. He preceded her in death June 12, 1990.
A homemaker, Mrs. Decker was a member of Columbus Free Methodist Church.
Ada Greathouse
Brown County native Ada Greathouse died Monday, October 16, 2000, at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown.
Formerly from Freetown, Mrs. Greathouse was 96.
She was born September 16, 1904, to Thomas and Susan Thompson Carter.
She and Ira E. Greathouse were married October 8, 1921 in Brown County. He preceded her in death December 31, 1985.
Mrs. Greathouse had worked at Arvin Industries for 25 years and had been a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd Greathouse of Freetown; a daughter, Beulah Greathouse of Freetown; a brother, Roy Carter of Franklin; and three grandsons.
David Hadley
David Dean Hadley, the father of State Road 135 resident Dara Piper, died Saturday, October 14, 2000.
A resident of Camby, he was 62.
Mr. Hadley was born December 28, 1937, in Indianapolis, to Gordon Lowry and Martha Louise (Hunter) Hadley. They survive in Monrovia.
He married Darlene Gevenieve Day, who survives.
Wilma Hollingsworth
Wilma A. Costin Taylor Hollingsworth, the mother of Nashville resident Marilyn Gambold, died Friday, October 20, 2000, at the Sugar Creek Convalescent Center. A resident of Greenfield, she was 93.
She was born April 4, 1907, in Morgan County , the daughter of Orla and Alvena (Miles) Costin.
She married Ted Taylor, who preceded her in death.
She then married Mac Hollingsworth. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hollingsworth worked in the attendance office at John Marshall High School for five years, retiring in 1973.
Eric Stephen Kirby
Trafalgar area resident Eric Stephen Kirby died Saturday, October 21, 2000, after an automobile accident in Franklin. He was 21.
He was born in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Larry Gray and Connie Sue (Rairdon) Kirby. They survive in Trafalgar.
A construction worker, he had attended Franklin High School.
Mr. Kirby enjoyed playing basketball, fishing, horseback riding and being with his friends.
Hershell R. McInteer
Hershell R. McInteer, the father of Nashville resident Tom D. McInteer, died Friday, October 20, 2000, at the Columbus Hospital emergency room. A resident of Bartholomew County, he was 75.
Mr. McInteer was born May 16, 1925, in Edmonton, Kentucky, the son of Kay McInteer.
He and Dorothy Mae Pattingill were married December 14, 1946. She died May 6, 1997.
A retired landscaper, Mr. McInteer was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Anna L. Scrogham
Morgantown resident Anna L. Scrogham died Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at The Waters of Martinsville. She was 82.
She was born on October 30, 1917, in Brown County, the daughter of Noah and Melinda Summer Betts.
She and Fred Scrogham were married July 23, 1934, in Franklin. He preceded her in death in 1987.
A homemaker, Mrs. Scrogham was a member of the Morgantown Assembly of God Church.
James Ray Watkins
James Ray Watkins, the father of Morgantown fire chief Don Watkins, died Tuesday, October 17, at his residence in Mooresville.
He was 62.
Mr. Watkins was born April 8, 1938, to James Robert and Mary Grimes Watkins. His mother survives.
He and Barbara A. Gray were married January 8, 1983, in Indianapolis. She also survives.
Mr. Watkins had been a meat cutter for most of his like and was employed at Mooresville Meat Packing for 30 years, retiring in 1999.
A member of Mooresville Eagles Lodge, Mr. Watkins enjoyed fishing.
Clyde Campbell
Brown County native Clyde Campbell died Thursday, November 2, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Bloomington, he was 80.
Mr. Campbell was born September 26, 1920, in Brown County, the son of Lon and Kizzy (Davis) Campbell.
He married Leona M. Foreman, she survives.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Campbell was a member of New Horizon Church.
He has worked at Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, retiring in 1982.
Edith June Heller
Edith June Heller, a member of the PEO International Sisterhood Chapter CU in Nashville, died Tuesday, October 31, 2000, at Brandywine Nursing and Rehab Center in Greenfield. She was 96.
Mrs. Heller was born June 26, 1904, in Adams County to the Reverend Ezra and Mary (Stauffer) Glendening.
She was a homemaker and member of Bradley United Methodist Church in Greenfield.
She was a member of United Methodist Women, Women’s Book Club, Hesperian Club in Greenfield and Psi Iota Xi, in which she served a variety of offices. She attended Ball State University.
Dora Linke McLeod
Dora C. Linke McLeod, stepmother of Nashville resident Keith McLeod, died Wednesday, November 1, 2000, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Columbus, she was 98.
She was born in Clifford September 10, 1902, to John B. and Sadie E. (Hurt) Davis.
She married Aaron E. Linke in 1922. He died in 1948. She married Worley L.D. McLeod August 27, 1949. He preceded her in death December 5, 1963.
Mrs. McLeod moved in 1943 from Columbus to Shelbyville where she lived until returning to Columbus in 1992.
A homemaker, she was a member of West Street Methodist Church in Shelbyville and a former member of Clifford Christian Church.
Edward Dean Orme
Edward Dean Orme, the brother of Helmsburg resident Sandra Taylor, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at Karachi, Pakistan, where he was a resident. He was 46.
Mr. Orme was born June 4, 1954, in Indianapolis to Edward L. and Carolyn S. (Eggleston) Orme.
He married Sue A. (Christina) Orme. She survives.
He was a 1972 graduate of Southport High School, where he was awarded the La Sertoma Youth Service Award and earned a letter on the cross country team.
John A. Owen
John A. Owen, the father of Brown County resident and business owner Virginia Fearrin, died Friday, October 27, 2000, at Lakeview Health Care Center in Carmel. A resident of Noblesville, he was 85.
Mr. Owen was born in Noblesville August 3, 1915, to Morrie and Rena Owen, both who preceded him in death.
He was a 1933 graduate of Noblesville High School and attended Earlham College and Butler University, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
He sold men’s clothing at L. Strauss and Company in Indianapolis for many years, then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to model and sell men’s suits in Palm Beach. He then moved back to Indiana and was head buyer for Weiler’s Men Store in Anderson.
Meredith Van Poer
Meredith Van Poer, the father of Nashville resident Darrell Poer, died Saturday, November 4, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of Tipton, he was 68.
Mr. Poer was born April 15, 1932, in Garrett to Gerald F. and Rosa Oster (Shippy) Poer.
He had owned and operated Country Corner Insurance and had been a teacher in Miami, Huntington and Marion counties. He also had been the superintendent of public instruction in Hamilton County.
Mr. Poer served on the Tipton County school board from 1994 until 1998.
Delmer E. Rund
Delmer E. Rund, who was baptized at Cottonwood Christian Church, died November 2, 2000, at his home in Beech Grove. He was 84.
Mr. Rund received a master’s degree in education from Indiana University. He was the principal at Central Elementary School in Beech Grove for 23 years before retiring in 1976.
He was also a sergeant in the United States Army.
Mr. Rund was a member of Southport Christian Heights.
