Max L. Harms
Max L. Harms, grandfather of Four Mile Ridge Road resident Annette Donica-Giles, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Columbus, he was 82.
Mr. Harms was born in Hoopeston, Illinois, March 4, 1918, the son of John Walter and Mary Roxie (Tovey) Harms.
He was a 1936 graduate of Columbus High School.
He married Lorene Anderson in 1939. She survives.
He was an Army veteran during World War II, from 1944 to 1946, discharged as a staff sergeant.
Mr. Harms retired after 33 years, in 1973, from the United States Postal Department. He also retired in 1983 from Cummins Engine Company after 10 years.
Virginia Hunt
Brown County native Virginia Louise Hunt died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at her home in Columbus. She was 56.
Ms. Hunt was born in Brown County November 5, 1944, daughter of the late Monte and Lennie Folks Meredith.
She was a former employee of Como Plastics and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
May E. Smith
May E. Smith, who has several Brown County relatives, died Friday, December 22, 2000, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Bloomington, she was 92.
Ms. Smith was born July 24, 1908, in Lafayette, the daughter of Asa Vansciver and Lillie May (Rawlings) Borton.
She was a homemaker and charter member of McDoel Baptist Church.
Robert D. Stephans
Robert D. Stephans, father of Nashville resident Charmaine D. Hedrick, died Friday, January 5, 2001, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Edinburgh, he was 77.
Mr. Stephans was born May 26, 1923, in Shelbyville, the son of Earl W. Stephans and Arlena E. Eggers.
He married Charlotte Bernadine Schwartz October 12, 1951.
He was an embalmer and funeral director in Indianapolis and Shelbyville for 52 years, retiring in 1994.
Jaclynn Wray
Nashville resident Jaclynn Leigh "Noonie" Wray died Sunday, December 31, 2000, while on vacation in Summerdale, Alabama. She was 17.
Ms. Wray was born October 17, 1983, in Columbus, the daughter of Rory L. Wray and Marjorie "Marjie" (Day) Hicks. They survive.
She was a junior at Brown County High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader for the past three years. She was treasurer of the junior class and served on the student and leadership councils.
Hazel Basset
Hazel Kirk Basset died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at the Brown County Community Care Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Basset was born in Kokomo June 4, 1914, to Fred and Mamie (Young) Kirk.
She married Walter D. Bassett January 17, 1938. He preceded her in death January 20, 1987.
A graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and the Indianapolis School of Practical Nursing, Mrs. Bassett retired as assistant director of development at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was an avid bowler.
Joyce N. Brody
Joyce N. Brody, the mother of Gnaw Bone resident Mike Brody, died Friday, January 26, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital.
A resident of Spencer, she was 71.
Mrs. Brody was a homemaker and a member of the garden club and humane society.
Other survivors include two sons, Bill Brody of Florida and Jeff Brody of New York; three daughters, Bonnie Brody of Lafayette, Robin McCallister of Spencer and Terri Burchler of Florida; and a sister, Jean Wilcox of Colorado.
Doris L. Budd
Doris L. (Evans) Budd. the sister of Morgantown resident John A. Evans, died Sunday, January 21, 2001, at Greenwood Health and Living Center. A resident of Greenwood, she was 82.
She was born May 16, 1918, in Crawfordsville to David and Carrie Evans.
She married Charles Budd. He preceded her in death August 25, 1992.
Mrs. Budd was a homemaker and a member of Martinsville Methodist Church.
Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy A. Farmer of Port Lucie, Florida and Martha Jo Cunningham of Greenwood;three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Dean Crippen
Dean R. Crippen, the father of Nineveh resident Teresa Fletcher, died Friday, January 26, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
A resident of Columbus, he was 70.
He was born in Columbus April 26, 1930, to John R. and Sarah "Sallie" (Bolander) Crippen.
He married Carolyn Harris. She died April 17, 1992.
Mr. Crippen then married Wilma Sears January 9, 1993. She survives.
Hazel Mae Gee
Brown County native Hazel Mae Gee died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Franklin Meadows. A resident of Nineveh, she was 83.
She was born November 23, 1917, the daughter of Edgar Alford and Sarah (Ferguson) Parmerlee.
She married Carl Dale Gee in Brown Co-unty, December 24, 1935. He preceded her in death in February 1990.
Helen V. Huber
Nashville native Helen V. Huber died Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
A resident of Greenwood, Mrs. Huber was 80.
She was born October 30, 1920, the daughter of Jacob and Frieda (Percifield) Kennedy.
She and Woodrow L. Huber were married in June 1939. He preceded her in death.
She attended Arsenal Tech High School.
A secretary, retiring 20 years ago, Mrs. Huber was employed by the finance center at Division Headquarters of Fort Benjamin Harrison.
Paul Leahigh
Paul Loren Leahigh, the father of Nashville resident Rebecca Noffsinger, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at his home in Butlerville. He was 72.
Mr. Leahigh was born in Jennings County August 19, 1928, the son of Lester Roy and Edith (Willoughby) Leahigh.
He married Betty Fleming in Indianapolis August 20, 1951. She survives.
A 1947 graduate of Butlerville High School, Mr. Leahigh served in the National Guard from February 1949 until July 1950, and was an Air Force veteran, serving from September 1950 until 1953.
Arnold Mullis
Brown County native Arnold Mullis died Sunday, January 21, 2001, at his home. A resident of Jonesville, he was 80.
Mr. Mullis was born August 16, 1920, to James and Pearl (Mullis) Mullis.
He married Lena I. Roberts in Brown County. She died April 16, 1984.
A member of the Diesel Workers Union, Mr. Mullis retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1985 after 39 years.
Survivors include five sons, Arnold Mullis Jr. of Stuart, Florida, and Jerry L., Gary D., Rickey D. and Steve A. Mullis, all of Columbus; a daughter, Nina Frazier of Columbus; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Jannet M. Polley
Bloomington resident, Jannet M. Polley died Monday, January 22, 2001, at Beverly Health Care. She was 56.
She was born February 15, 1944.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Owens of Henderson, Kentucky; two sisters, Evelyn Petro and Irene VanDeventer, both of Bloomfield; two half brothers, Woody Robbins, of Greenwood and Donald Chandler of Hope; and three grandchildren.
Irvin Adams
Irvin C. Adams, the brother of Nashville resident Louise Hutchinson, died Monday, January 29, 2001, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
A resident of Trafalgar, Mr. Adams was 70.
He was born August 23, 1930, in Indianapolis, the son of Arthur E. Adams Sr. and Margaret Haggard Adams. His mother survives.
He graduated from Tech High School in Indianapolis and Chicago Technical College in 1965 with a degree in drafting.
He and Marilynn E. Zimmerman were married May 30, 1952, in Trafalgar. She also survives.
Mary Ahlbrand
Mary E. Pyatt Ahlbrand, the mother of State Road 46 East residents Deanna Smith and Virginia "Ginny" Roberts, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at the Brown County Community Care Center.
A former resident of Brownstown, She was 82.
She was born in Columbus May 9, 1918, the daughter of Herbert G. and Bertha Adams King.
She married Charles I. Pyatt January 23, 1940, in Columbus. He died January 20, 1970.
She then married Louis G. Ahlbrand on July 3, 1971. He died November 10, 1996.
A former employee of Reliance Shirt Factory and Yula’s Young World, Mrs. Ahlbrand was a member of East Columbus Christian Church.
Joyce E. Chitwood
Former county resident Joyce E. Chitwood died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. She was 78.
She married Earl Garner, who preceded her in death. She then married Wendell Chitwood on February 26, 1977. He also preceded her in death February 27, 1993.
A graduate of Helmsburg High School, Mrs. Chitwood was employed as a sales clerk at Harry Levinson’s clothing store in Indianapolis from 1963 until 1979.
Charles Greathouse Sr.
State Road 135 South resident Charles A. Greathouse Sr. died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at his residence. He was 79.
Mr. Greathouse was born July 12, 1921, in Terre Haute, the son of Clarence and Veva (Carmichael) Greathouse.
He and Jeanette Cross were married April 5, 1970. She survives.
A tool and dye maker, Mr. Greathouse was a member of the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in southern Brown County.
He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Columbus and that community’s Eagles Lodge.
Lula Bell Hamilton
Lula Bell Hamilton died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at the Brown County Community Care Center. She was 83.
She was born in Orange County April 24, 1917, the daughter of Robert Alonzo and Maud Crane Cauble.
She was the widow of Paul McIntyre and Charlie Hamilton.
A self-employed professional housekeeper, Mrs. Hamilton was a member of East Columbus Christian Church and Democrat Club.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald and Dexter McIntyre, both of Columbus, Marvin Hamilton of Hope and Morris W. Hamilton of Oklahoma; a daughter, Linda Kunce of Edinburgh; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
