Ernest Linville
Wabash Village Apartments resident Ernest Lee "Lebo" Linville died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was 33.
He was born in Noblesville December 10, 1967, the son of Clyde Hardson and Patsie Ann Raymer Linville. They survive in Freetown.
He married Camille Osburn. She also survives.
Mr. Linville worked in industrial maintenance and had been a member of the National Rifle Association.
He attended Brown County High School.
Other survivors include two sons, Hank and Samuel Linville, both of Nashville; two step-sons, Chaz and Devon Harrison, both of Nashville; two step-daughters, Faye and Maggie Harrison, both of Nashville; a sister, Debbie Bragg of Freetown; three brothers, Gary, Ricky and Tommy Linville, all of Freetown; five half-sisters, Barbara Cash, Sandy Oliver, Shirley Bernell, Betty Marketty and Diane Linville, all of Hamilton County; six half-brothers, Erbie, Paul, Alvin, Larry and David Linville, all of Hamilton County; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Pinky and Lula Lin-ville, and Ernest and Fannie Raymer.
Nelson Lee officiated a service Tuesday, February 20, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville.
Burial was in Brown County’s Christiansburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a memorial fund set up at Fifth Third Bank, 100 Commercial Street, Nashville, Indiana 47448

Kathryn Smiley
Kathryn L. Smiley, the mother of Nashville resident Deloris A. Sinn, died Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at Hospitality House in Bloomington. She was 84.
Other survivors include two daughters, Diana G. Lawrence of Phoenix and Doris E. Bartlett of Bloomington; a son, Kenneth R. Chambers of Dewey, Arizona; two sisters, Othella Harlow of Bloomington and Julia Hendrix of Franklin; and two brothers, Hubert Stewart of Bloomington and Max Hawkins of Greene County.
A service was held Saturday, February 17, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
Burial was in Hanson Cemetery.

Norman Smith
Norman Smith, the father of Brown County resident Sharon Snodgress, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Powellhurst Nursing Home in Portland, Oregon, following a long illness.
A resident of Salem, Oregon, Mr. Smith was 71.
He was born February 14, 1930, in Fayetteville, Arkansas
Mr. Smith retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1977 as a Senior Master Sergeant. with a military intelligence unit.
He also was a broadcast radio engineer, author, craftsman, dowser and was interested in metaphysics.
Other survivors include grandchildren Alyssa and Taran Snodgress of Brown County.
A memorial service with a military honor guard will be today, Wednesday, February 21, in the veterans cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Thomas E. White
Nashville resident Thomas E. White died Sunday, February 18, 2001, at Brown County Community Care Center. He was 91.
Mr. White was born June 10, 1909, in Brown County, the son of James Milton White and Laura Catherine David.
He married Sarah (Clupper) White August 8, 1936, in Columbus. She survives.
He was a farmer, retiring in 1974.
Other survivors include two daughters, Fran Rogers and Kay Parker, both of Nashville; two sons, Keith White of Winter Haven, Florida, and Tom White of Nashville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters and one granddaughter, Lori Jo Parker.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 22, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be today, Wednesday, February 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles D. Bowman
Brown County native Charles D. Bowman, of Jonesville, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in his home. He was 77.
Mr. Bowman was born in Freetown May 17, 1923, to Charles and Mable (Wilds) Bowman.
He married Ellen L. Quillen January 18, 1943. She survives.
Mr. Bowman was retired from Cummins. He was a member of the Jonesville Masonic Lodge and served as deacon and trustee as a member of Jonesville Christian Church.
Other survivors include a son, Michael Bowman of Jonesville; two daughters, Sharon Butler and Becky Hawksworth, both of Jonesville; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three brothers and a sister.
A funeral was held Tuesday, March 6, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus. The reverends James Campbell and John Penn officiated.
Burial was held at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or Jonesville Christian Church Building Fund.

Claude Allen Hackney
Claude Allen Hackney, father of former Brown County residents Jesse, Joe and Robert Hackney now of Hammond, died Saturday, February 24, 2001. at the Hammond Nursing Home in Hammond, Louisiana. A resident of that city, he was 65.
Mr. Hackney was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Church in Natalbany and a veteran of the United States Army.
Other survivors include a sister, Ethelyn Henderson of Edinburgh; and a brother, Glendford Hackney of Bedford, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Hackney.
A service was held Tuesday, February 27, at Geisler Funeral Home of Hammond. The Reverend Jeff Ellis officiated.
Burial was held at Gatlin Cemetery in Hammond.

Shirley Knotts
Shirley J. Knotts, the mother of Nashville resident Peggy Jones, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital A resident of Columbus, she was 68.
She was born July 28, 1932, in Columbus to Richard L. and Mattie L. (Deering) McKinney.
She and Orval Eugene Knotts were married May 12, 1951. He died December 10, 1996.
Mrs. Knotts was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Plant City Florida.
Other survivors include a son, Kevin Knotts of Columbus; four daughters, Linda Reeves of Indianapolis, Shauna Vance of Lakeland, Florida, Shannon Collins of Milan, and Erin McGuire of Columbus; a brother, John McKinney of Plant City, Florida; a sister, Margaret Clements of Plant City, Florida; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey McKinney; and a sister, Catherine McKinney.
Reverend James A. Seddon officiated a service Monday, March 5, at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in Brown County’s New Bellsville Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Harold Littiken Jr.
Harold Littiken Jr., brother of Nashville resident Richard Littiken, died Sunday, February 25, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of that community, he was 72.
Mr. Littiken was born in Bartholomew County May 29, 1928, the son of Harold and June (Olmstead) Littiken.
He married Janet L. Melloncamp November 24, 1950. She survives.
He was retired from Columbus Auto Supply, where he managed the East Columbus store for a number of years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Other survivors include sons Jerry Littiken of Barnsville, Georgia, and Rex Littiken of Columbus; brothers Larry and Charles Littiken, both of Columbus; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Ronald and Darrell Littiken, and sisters Wilma Fitzpatrick and Kay Childers.
The Reverend Roy Hendershot officiated services Wednesday, February 28, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home in Columbus.
Burial was in Bethel Baptist Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Memorials may be made to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hialmar Merkel
Hialmar L. Merkel, the father of Nashville residents Terry M. and Chris P. Merkel, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at the Northwood Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Jasper.
A resident of Dubois, he was 82.
Mr. Merkel was born March 18, 1918, in Schnellville, the son of Andrew and Clara (Friedman) Merkel.
He married Ruth J. Seng on June 3, 1947. She preceded him in death on September 12, 1995.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Merkel served with the United States Navy’s Seebees.
He retired from the Northeast Dubois School Corporation Maint-enance Department, and also had been a self-employed construction contractor.
Mr. Merkel was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Dubois, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 673, St. Vincent DePaul society and the Dubois County Right To Life Organization.
Other survivors include five daughters, Marilyn Dudley of Terre Haute, Carol Persohn and Kate Schmitt, both of Dubois, Sharon Hemmerlein of Loogootee, and Jan Card of New Palestine; four sons, Steven A. Merkel of Santa Claus, Patrick S. Merkel, Tim A. Merkel and Michael Merkel, all of Dubois; a brother, Alfred Merkel of Celestine; two sisters, Ardella Matheis of Evansville and Rita Clare Seng of Jasper; 29 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marcella M. Matheis; and six brothers, Ned, William, Oscar, Urban, Edwin and John Merkel.
A service was held Tuesday, March 6, at St. Raphael Catholic Church. Burial followed in the church’s cemetery. Jasper’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 673 conducted military graveside rites.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Raphael Catholic Church Library or the Dubois County Right To Life.

Ert Moore
Brown County native Ert Moore died Saturday, February 17, 2001, in Fallon, Nevada. He was 98, and had lived in Fallon since 1986.
He was born November 12, 1902, to Clinton and Abbie Deaver Moore.
He married Marie Kennon March 15, 1929. She died in 1996.
A retired educator, Mr. Moore had graduated from Indiana Teachers College. Mr. Moore had taught at several one-room schools in Brown County during the 1920s.
He also had played basketball in Van Buren Township.
Mr. Moore moved to Nevada in 1935 and taught at Deer Lodge. He founded the school system in Gabbs, Nevada in 1942, where he was principal for 15 years. He retired in 1968.
Mr. Moore had been a member of the Eastern Star and was a Mason.
He also was a member of Brucite Lodge #42, Free and Accepted Masons, the Nevada Education Association, Fallon York Rite Masonic Bodies and the First Southern Baptist Church in Fallon.
Survivors include a daughter, Bebe Mills of Fallon; a brother, Julius Moore of Columbus; a sister, Vivian Lutes of southern Brown County; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews in the Brown County area.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Imo Moore, and a brother, Albert Moore.
A service was held Wednesday, February 21, at Smith Family Funeral Home with burial in Fallon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Churchill County Museum, 1050 S. Maine Street, Fallon, Nevada, 89406, or the First Southern Baptist Church, 900 South Taylor Street, Fallon, Nevada, 89406.

Helen P. Patton
Helen P. Patton, cousin of Nashville resident Louie Bobb Wood, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Clearwater, Florida. A resident of Largo, Florida, having moved there in 1994 from North Brunswick, New Jersey, she was 96.
She was born August 2, 1904, in Indianapolis.
She was a retired teacher and a Baptist. She played violin for the Queens Symphony Orchestra of New York City and was active in Boy Scouts of America.
Other survivors include two nephews, John P. Hill of Largo, Florida, and David B. Hill of New Port Richey, Florida; and cousin Margaretta Wheatcraft of Greenwood.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. March 20 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in White River Township, Franklin. There will be no calling.
Arrangements are being handled by Hubbell Funeral Home and Crematory, 499 North Indiana Rocks Road, Belleair Bluffs, Florida.

Beatrice Rudolph
Beatrice Ruth Rudolph, grandmother of Nashville resident Damita Henderson, died Monday, February 26, 2001, at Miller’s Merry Manor at Hope. A resident of Columbus, she was 85.
Mrs. Rudolph was born in Columbus April 16, 1915, to Raire and Agnes Pearce Fox. She married Earl Roy Rudolph February 24, 1940. He preceded her in death January 8, 1983.
She had worked at Reliance Shirt Factory, Holiday Inn and Cummins Engine Company. She was a member of Garden City Church of Christ and Order of Eastern Star.
Other survivors include a son, Donald "Rudy" Rudolph of Reddington; a daughter, Sue Lain of Columbus; brothers, Carl and Frank Fox, both of Columbus; a sister, Phylis Rothrock of Columbus; grandchildren, Denisa Rudolph and Brad Lain, both of Columbus, and Andrea Rudolph of Reddington; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
A service was held Thursday, March 1, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home. Smiley Bennett officiated.
Entombment was held at Garland Brook Mausoleum.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or Arc of Bartholomew County.
