Luster L. Slevin
Former Brown County resident Luster L. Slevin died Thursday, September 17, 1998, at his home in Franklin. He was 75.
Mr. Slevin was born June 1, 1923, in Indianapolis to Eston and Jennie Bauman Slevin.
He and Mary Lou Forney were married August 26, 1950, in Martinsville. She survives.
Mr. Slevin attended Sprunica's one-room school in northern Brown County.
He had worked as a welder at Arvin Industries in Franklin for 39 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Slevin was a member of Grace Assembly of God Church in Whiteland
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include five sons, Michael Slevin and Kenneth Robert Slevin, both of Brown County, Thomas Slevin, John Slevin and Daniel Paul Slevin, all of Franklin; four daughters, Barbara Ann Slevin of Hartford City, Judith Summers and Karen Sue Slevin, both of Franklin and Betty Jean Thornburgh of Bluffton; two brothers, Eugene Slevin of Georgia and Edwin Slevin of Nashville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Slevin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles S. Slevin; and an infant daughter, Mary Slevin.
The Reverend David Hamilton and Reverend Frank Criswell conducted a service Saturday, September 19, at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial was in Bean Blossom's Weeping Willow Cemetery.

Richard Straley
Morgantown resident Richard Eugene "Dukes" Straley died Friday, September 11, 1998, at his home. He was 78.
Mr. Straley was born August 6, 1920, in Owen County to Theron and Ida Dyer Straley.
He and Elizabeth "Betty" Sinclair were married May 20, 1989, in Bargersville. She survives.
Mr. Straley had worked as a lineman for Bargersville Utilities for 33 years, retiring this year.
Before that, he had worked for REMC for many years.
Mr. Straley was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 139th Field Artillery Battalion. He was discharged in 1945.
He also served with the Indiana National Guard.
Mr. Straley was a member of the Christian Chapel Church in Morgantown and Franklin Masonic Lodge.
Other survivors include three daughters, Sharon Thompson of Bargersville, Marty Whittenbarger of Morgantown and Karen Santerre of Morgantown; a son, Theron J. "T.J." Straley of Morgantown; four step-daughters, Brenda Charbeneau of Michigan, Janet Boley of Scottsburg, Rhoda Herron of Morgantown and Regina Austin of Waverly; five step-sons, Bill Creel of Virginia, Norman Creel of Alaska, Carl Creel of California, Rick Paris of Scottsburg and Russell Paris of Scottsburg; three sisters, Iris Powell of Arizona, Lucille Williams of Greenwood and Opal Poultan of Greenwood; and 26 grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice McMillan Straley February 13, 1988; a son, Richard Eugene Straley Jr.; five sisters, Carroll Haysley, Mary Troth, Freda Booth, Cletus May and Georgia Dillman; and four brothers, Clyde Straley, Dottu Straley, Russell Straley and Mervyn Straley.
The Reverend David Brock conducted a service Tuesday, September 15, at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christian Chapel Church in Morgantown.

Jack L. Barnett
Jack LeRoy Barnett died Tuesday, September 22, 1998, at Putnam Acres Care Center in Ottawa, Ohio. He was 70.
Mr. Barnett left survivors in the Brown County area.
He was born March 1, 1928, in Nineveh to Benjamin Joseph Barnett and Ruby Wells. His mother survives in Morgantown.
Mr. Barnett and Dolores Stockstill were married December 21, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas. She survives.
He had worked as a district manager for Indianapolis Newspapers for 11 years, retiring in 1977.
Mr. Barnett served with the United States Army and United States Air Force for 16 years, retiring as a staff sergeant.
Other survivors include four sons, the Reverend Rick Barnett of Deshler, Ohio, Randy Barnett of Sylvania, Ohio, Ronny Barnett of Columbus Grove, Ohio, and Robby Barnett; two daughters, Tracy Gilbertson of Peru and Teresa De La Cruz of Weston, Ohio; a brother, Joeallen Barnett of Elwood; a sister, Marie Sands of Franklin; and eight grandchildren.
The Reverend Anita Duggan led a service Friday, September 25, at Rodenberger Funeral Home in Deshler, Ohio.
Burial was at Lulu Cemetery in Ida, Michigan.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice of charities.

Marion A. Clephane
Former Brown County resident Marion Allen Clephane died Tuesday, September 22, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 59.
Mr. Clephane was born September 1, 1939, in Morgantown to Charles William and Oneita Kemp Clephane.
He was married to Brenda Sine. She survives.
He had moved to Marion County from Monrovia.
Mr. Clephane attended Helmsburg High School in Jackson Township.
He had worked as a production control supervisor at Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors in Indianapolis for 25 years, retiring in 1987.
Mr. Clephane was a member of Gasburg Baptist Church and was a past worshipful master at Monrovia Masonic Lodge.
Other survivors include three daughters, Robin Steward and Lori Biggerstaff, both of Indianapolis and Mindy Gieseking of Monrovia; two sisters, Dolores Moore of Spearsville and Nancy Woods of Country Club Road; a brother, Jerrell Clephane of Indianapolis; and six grandchildren.
A service was conducted Friday, September 25, at Little and Sons Funeral Home in Beech Grove.
Burial was in Washington Park East Cemetery at Indianapolis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Virginia Clute
Brown County native Virginia L. Marshall Clute died Tuesday morning, September 22, 1998, at a Tipton Nursing Home. A resident of Kokomo, she was 81.
Mrs. Clute was born July 16, 1917, in Nashville to Dr. Clarence Eugene and Anna Flint Marshall.
Her father, also a native of Nashville, practiced dentistry in Brown County from 1916 until 1919, when he moved to Montana.
She and Jackson B. Clute were married in 1938, in Livingston, Montana. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Clute moved to Carmel, California in 1957, where she opened an art studio and a gift shop before retiring.
She attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekah and Pocahontas lodges.
Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anona A. and Christopher P. Gray, both of Kokomo; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted Saturday, October 3, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville. Stout and Son Funeral Home in Russiaville was in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie Cooper
Bonnie R. Cooper, the mother of Nashville resident E. Diane Henderson, died Wednesday, September 23, 1998, at her home in Mooresville. She was 67.
Mrs. Cooper was born July 1, 1931, in St. Charles, Virginia to Marlin Dee and Dora Alice Shuler Gibson.
She and Sewell Stanley Cooper were married January 26, 1949. He survives in Morgan County.
Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker.
She was a member of Clearview Community Chapel in Mooresville.
Other survivors include three sons, Stanley K. Cooper of Duffield, Virginia and Steven D. Cooper and Michael A. Cooper, both of Mooresville; four other daughters, Sonja K. Kimmel, Janice F. Branthafer, Myra L. McCallister and Gwen L. Braughton, all of Mooresville; two sisters, Flossie Crusenberry of Indianapolis and Juanita Collins of Ypsilanti, Michigan; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Rob Lundy conducted a service Saturday, September 26, at Carlisle and Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville.
Burial was in that city's White Lick Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Morgan County Unit, Post Office Box 1127, Martinsville, Indiana 46151.

Noah Cox Jr.
Nashville resident Noah N. Cox Jr. died Saturday, September 26, 1998, at Bloomington Hospital. He was 69.
Mr. Cox was born August 9, 1929, in Washington County to Noah N. Cox Sr. and Nellie Green Cox.
He and Marjorie Cassidy were married August 31, 1949, in Borden. She survives.
He was graduated from Washington County High School in Salem in 1943.
Mr. Cox had worked as a brick mason.
He was a member of Bricklayers and Masons International Union of America #4.
Mr. Cox was a HAM radio operator and was a member of Amateur Radio Operators.
He also was a member of the Emergency and Disaster Management Team of Southern Indiana.
Mr. Cox served in the United States Air Forces and United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He attained the rank of sergeant.
Other survivors include three sons, Alan Cox of Hollowrock, Tennessee, Tim Cox of Martinsville and Rob Cox of Nashville; two daughters, Peggy Snider of Nashville and Pamela Cox of Columbus; nine grandchildren, Betsy Miller, Glenn Cox, Neil Cox, Rick Cox, Alicia Cox, Sara Snider, Logan Snider, Becky Sandefur and Jamie Phillips; and three great-grandchildren, Kara Russell, Kyle Miller and Justin Phillips.
A service was conducted Monday, September 28, in Nashville's Greenlawn Cemetery.
Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Post Office Box 689, Columbus, Indiana 47202.

Judith Snyder
Daugherty Road resident Judith G. Snyder died Tuesday, September 22, 1998, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 65.
Mrs. Snyder was born June 6, 1933, in Brown County to Isaiah Smith and Muriel Russell.
She was married to Edward L. Snyder. He survives in Brown County.
Mrs. Snyder was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Garden City Church of Christ.
Other survivors include two sons, Steven L. Snyder of Brown County and James E. Snyder of Jennings County; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The Reverend Dwight Hardin led a service Thursday, September 24, at Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Brown County Memorial Park off Old State Road 46.

Maurice Fleener
Morgantown native Maurice Joseph Fleener died Tuesday, September 29, 1998. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 76.
Mr. Fleener was born April 25, 1922, in Morgantown to Lawrence Fleener Sr. and Clora Brummett Fleener.
He was married to Alice G. McMillan. She survives in Marion County.
Mr. Fleener had owned a real estate brokerage, For Land's Sake, in Morgan County for 10 years, retiring in 1975.
Other survivors include a son, Terry J. Fleener of Martinsville; two brothers, Lawrence Fleener Jr. of Franklin and Mickey Leon Fleener of Mooresville; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted Thursday, October 1, at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel in Indianapolis.
Burial was at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery near Martinsville.

John Housand
Morgantown resident John Edward Housand died Friday, October 2, 1998, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was 88.
Mr. Housand was born June 22, 1910, in Morgan County to William and Grace Thomas Housand.
He and Sylvia Marie Sichting were married August 28, 1943, in Indianapolis. She survives.
Mr. Housand was graduated from Monrovia High School in 1929.
He had worked as a pipefitter and mold mechanic at U.S. Rubber Company (Uniroyal) in Indianapolis for 39 years, retiring in 1973.
Mr. Housand was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a former master of Brooklyn Masonic Lodge in Morgan County. Mr. Housand had been active in that organization for half a century.
He was also a member of the Brooklyn Order of the Eastern Star, Martinsville American Legion, Morgantown Conservation Club and Morgantown United Methodist Church.
Mr. Housand enjoyed square dancing, coon hunting, playing cards and attending his grandchildren's basketball games.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael Housand of Morgantown and Steve Housand of Whiteland; a sister, Martha Doan of Monrovia; five grandchildren, Erin Housand, Matt Housand, Kevin Housand, Jim Wilkerson and Chris Osborn; and three great-grandchildren, Shane Belton, Alyssa Osborn and Alysha Wilkerson.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Opal Housand, Naomi Brock, Geneva Brock and Celia Sunderland.
The Reverend Jeffrey Sexton will lead a service today, October 7, at 10:30 a.m. in Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery near Martinsville.
Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown was in charge of arrangements.
