Roy Carter
Former Brown County resident Roy Carter died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Franklin United Methodist Community. A resident of Franklin, he was 102.
He was born December 25, 1898, in Brown County, the son of Thomas and Susan (Thompson) Carter.
He married Eunice Mitchner February 28, 1920. She preceded him in death September 26, 1981. He married Abilene (Glenn) Meadows July 2, 1982, in Trafalgar. She preceded him in death April 6, 1998.
Mr. Carter was a farmer and a carpenter for many years in Jackson County. He attended the Kurtz Church of the Nazarene.
Eric Crutcher
Eric Wayne Crutcher, grandson of Brown County resident Juanita Thompson, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Franklin Meadows. A resident of Franklin, he was 22.
Mr. Crutcher was born August 21, 1978, in Johnson County, the son of Bobby L. Crutcher and Cheryl (Cunningham) Thompson, both who survive.
Mr. Crutcher was a self-employed construction worker before an auto accident in October 2000.
He enjoyed fishing, playing basketball and football, listening to music and dancing. He also enjoyed being with his friends.
Robert Carl Dorsett
Robert Carl Dorsett, brother of Brown County resident Kay McInteer, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at his home in Dallas, Texas. A former Columbus resident, he was 62.
He was born January 9, 1939, to Carl and Vivian (Cairnes) Dorsett.
He married Lawana Dorsett. She survives.
Mr. Dorsett was a retired brick mason and construction worker for many years in the Columbus area and had served three years in the Army.
Carolyn R. Fisher
Carolyn R. Fisher of Norman, sister of Freetown resident Marilyn Followell, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 59.
She was born in Jackson County February 1, 1942, to the late Leslie and Mary Mobley Followell. She married David L. Fisher July 17, 1961, in Brown County. He survives.
Mrs. Fisher was a homemaker and member of Houston Christian Church in Freetown.
Martha Grace Hacker
Upper Bean Blossom Road resident Martha Grace Hacker died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her residence. She was 76.
Mrs. Hacker was born April 30, 1925, in Marion, Ohio, to Orval H. and Sylvia McEldowney Emberton.
She married Oren Clinton Callon in 1939 in Spearsville. He died December 12, 1962. She married John Hacker April 13, 1991, in Morgantown. He preceded her in death March 10, 1998.
Mrs. Hacker had been involved in nursing for more than 50 years and had been employed at Johnson Memorial Hospital for 23 years, St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove and for the last five years at Extenda-Care Convalescent Center until August 2000.
Harvey J. Harney
Morgantown resident Harvey J. Harney died Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Morgantown Health Care Inn. He was 81.
Mr. Harney was born January 17, 1920, in Harrison County, Kentucky, the son of William Newton Harney and Elizabeth (Roberts) Harney.
He married Zella Mae Yoste. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Harney was a retired custodian at a department store.
Mable L. Jenkins
Nineveh resident Mable L. Jenkins died Friday, July 6, 2001, at her residence. She was 71.
She was born June 20, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Henry and Alta Lowe.
She was married to Lester F. Jenkins. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jenkins was a press metal worker for General Motors Division of Truck and Bus for 25 years. She retired in 1992.
Edith G. Jewell
Brown County native Edith G. Jewell died Friday, July 6, 2001, at her home. A resident of Columbus, she was 88.
Mrs. Jewell was born August 12, 1912, in Brown County, to John J. and Anna Stitt Gates. She married Arthur "Pop" Jewell February 1, 1930. He died June 17, 2001.
She was an industrial worker during World War II and later became a licensed practical nurse, graduating in 1961 from the Indianapolis School of Practical Nursing. She retired from Bartholomew County Hospital in 1975.
Cara Kern-Jones
County native Cara Kern-Jones died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. A resident of Unionville, she was 21. She died of injuries she had received earlier in an automobile accident.
Ms. Kern-Jones was born March 4, 1980, in Nashville to Timothy Kern and Debora Dalton Jones. Her mother survives in Unionville.
She was graduated from Bloomington High School North in 1998. Ms. Kern-Jones had worked as a merchandiser for Prism Merchandising. That company is based in Illinois.
Richard King
State Road 46 East resident Richard King died Sunday, July 8, at his residence. He was 72.
Mr. King was born May 2, 1929 in Noblesville to Harvey and Retta Bradfield King. He married Connie Jo Miller King February 13, 1990. She survives.
Mr. King was working as a gate attendant at the Brown County State Park. He was a retired truck driver for Burlington Motor Carriers.
He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Noblesville. Mr. King was a member of the Brown County Historical Society, Masonic Lodge #530, Eastern Star, Chapter 200 in Noblesville, Scottish Rite Shrine in Indianapolis and Teamsters Union #135.
Teri Lynn Mackenzie
Teri Lynn Mackenzie, a resident of the Brown County Community Care Center in Nashville, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 30.
Miss Mackenzie was born August 25, 1970, in North Hollywood, California, to Dennis Mikkelson and Sylvia Weaver Mikkelson, both of Boulder City, Nevada.
Survivors include three sisters, Carol Combs of Greensburg and Pamela Mikkelson and Denise Sells, both of Boulder City, Nevada.
Mary Catherine McNeeley
Mary Catherine McNeeley, the mother of Nineveh resident John E. McNeeley, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Kindred Hospital In Greenwood. A resident of Indianapolis, she was 67.
Mrs. McNeeley was born in Jasonville January 12, 1934, the daughter of George and Elizabeth McCulloch.
She married Ronald E. McNeeley. He preceded her in death in August 1986.
John Robert Noel Jr.
John Robert Noel Jr., the brother of Nashville resident Rosetta Lynn Anderson, died Friday, June 29, 2001. A resident of Lyons, he was 42.
His parents are Viletta and John Robert Noel Sr. of Worthington.
He married Debra Jean Carpenter, and she survives.
Mr. Noel had been employed by Boston Scientific and was an Air Force veteran.
Nellie Pruitt
Nellie Laverne Pruitt, the mother of Nashville resident Earl Pruitt, died Monday morning, July 2, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center in Lawrence County. A resident of Norman, she was 82.
Mrs. Pruitt was born August 10, 1918, in Washington County to Newton and Nancy Hamilton Bowers.
She and Luchen Pruitt were married April 13, 1941. He survives.
L. June Snyder
Brown County native L. June Snyder died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at her home in Columbus. She was 54.
She was born June 22, 1947, the daughter of Monte and Lennie Folks Meredith.
She and Alvin W. Snyder were married June 5, 1965. He survives.
A salesperson for Friendly Home Parties, Mrs. Snyder was a member of Who So Ever Will Church in Edinburgh.
Hazel Thayer
Brown County native Hazel M. Thayer died Monday morning, July 2, 2001, at Orlando Regional Health Care Center in Orlando, Florida. A resident of Winter Garden, Florida, she was 79.
Mrs. Thayer was born November 27, 1921, in Brown County to Frank and Nellie Eddy McKinney.
She and Ira Glenn Thayer were married September 28, 1946. He died May 31, 1999.
A member of Bartholomew County’s Bethel Baptist Church, Mrs. Thayer had worked at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus before becoming a caregiver to the elderly.
Joyce A. Frost
Fruitdale Road resident Joyce A. Frost died Thursday afternoon, July 26, 2001, at her home. She was 52.
Mrs. Frost was born March 4, 1950, in South Carolina to Mauro Gomez and Edith Watts.
She and Steven H. Frost were married February 26, 1970. He survives in Brown County.
Mrs. Frost had worked as a prep cook and hostess at Bob Evans Restaurant in Columbus. She had also worked at Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park.
She attended First Baptist Church in Greensburg.
Doris M. Kelp
Life-long Brown County resident Doris Marie Kelp died Wednesday afternoon, July 25, 2001, at Bloom-ington Hospital. She was 71.
Mrs. Kelp had lived on State Road 46 West.
She was born October 15, 1929, in Brown County to Samuel and Emma Snyder Mathis.
She was married to Harold "Bud" Kelp. He died August 27, 1978
A homemaker, Mrs. Kelp had been a member of Nashville Christian Church.
Jerry W. McClure
Branstetter Road resident Jerry W. McClure died Monday, July 23, 2001, at his home. He was 60.
A former resident of Camby and Spencer, Mr. McClure had lived in Brown County for 15 years.
Mr. McClure was born October 13, 1940, in Bloomington, the son of Donald L. and Violet (Carter) McClure. His mother survives in Camby.
He was graduated from Mooresville High School in 1958.
An avid bowler and fisherman, Mr. McClure served with the United States Marine Corps until 1962.
He had been a custodian for Brown County High School for five years, retiring in 1992.
Freida Watson
Word has been received here of the death of Freida Dorsett Watson. Ms. Watson died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at RHD Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. A resident of Carrollton, Texas, she was 66.
She had formerly lived in Shelby County before moving west.
Marcia A. Young
Marcia A. (Schrougham) Young died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at her residence in Martinsville. She was 45.
She was born May 31, 1956, in Martinsville, the daughter of Robert L. Schrougham of Nashville and Dorothea A. (McCoy) Prather. Her mother died April 3, 2001.
She had attended Martinsville High School.
