John L. Pictor
Lake LaSalle resident John L. Pictor died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at his residence. He was 60.
Born September 26, 1941, in Chicago, he was the son of Henry L. and Thyra Dillhoff Pictor.
He married Dolores A. Eaton September 29, 1962 in Griffith. She survives.
A 1959 graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, he served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962.
Mr. Pictor was a high pressure meter maintenance man for Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). He retired in 1993 after 30 years with the company.
And in 1999, he received the WRTV Channel 6 Leadership Award for his volunteer work.
Albert Williams Jr.
Albert Francis Williams Jr., the brother of Brown county resident Edward Williams, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at his residence in Greenwood. He was 56.
Born May 1, 1945, in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Albert F. Williams Sr. and Margaret (Irwin) Williams. His mother survives in Indianapolis.
A member of United Steel Workers Union, where he was a union steward, Mr. Williams retired from Switzers in Indianapolis after 22 years.
Paul Bay
Brown County native Paul V. Bay died Monday, November 5, 2001, at Morgan Hospital and Medical Center in Martinsville.
A lifelong Brown County resident, he was 80.
Born July 24, 1921, he was the son of Fred and Hazel (Snyder) Bay.
He and Juanita L. Pryor were married January 26, 1946, in Martinsville. She survives.
Mr. Bay ser-ved in the United States Army, Head-quarters Company, 151st Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, from 1941 until 1945. He received five Bronze Stars during that time.
Jack Crabtree
Mount Liberty Road resident Jack A. Crabtree died Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at his residence. He was 67.
Born October 8, 1934, in Brown County, he was the son of Joseph Harold and Ruth Louise (Seitz) Crabtree.
He married Helen Louise Moore. She survives.
A veteran, Mr. Crabtree served in the Navy from 1952 until 1972, and saw action during the Cuban missile crisis, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6195 in Nashville and served as its quarter master for many years.
Oral Hert
Former Brown County businessman Oral H. Hert died Monday, November 5, 2001. A resident of Indianapolis, he was 81.
He was graduated from Purdue University in 1948 as a civil engineer.
He married Phyllis Hawhee, and she survives.
Mr. Hert served with the US Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a Major after serving during World War II and the Korean War.
He worked for the Indiana State Board of Health for 31 years, retiring in 1981 as Director of Bureau of Engineering.
Two years later, in 1983, Mr. Hert co-founded Grandma Had One Antiques in Nashville.
Amos Lawson
Brown county Native Amos Dale Lawson died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at his home in Enterprise, Alabama. He was 67.
Born June 30, 1934, in Brown County, he was the son of Riley and Grace Bay Lawson.
A 1952 graduate of Brown county High School, Mr. Lawson was a licensed mechanic and enjoyed fishing and racing cars.
He was the former owner of Lawson’s Marathon in Columbus.
After that, he was a maintenance foreman at Louisiana State University for 12 years.
Rene Madden
Former Morgantown area resident Rene Rita Madden died Thursday, November 8, 2001, at her home in Ormond Beach, Florida. She was 71.
Born July 15, 1930, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Leslie K. and Beatruce I. Richardson Purvis.
She and James K. Madden were married July 15, 1947, in Indianapolis. He survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Madded was an avid Bridge player and taught the game to others.
She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
Gertrude Ulery
Long-time Brown County resident Gertrude Mabel Ulery died Wednesday, November 7, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. She was 90. She had lived for years on Jackson Branch Ridge Road.
Born January 16, 1911, in Union City, she was the daughter of Edward H. and Della Vernon Clark.
She and Norman Vincent Ulery were married June 16, 1928, in Logansport. He died September 9, 1976.
A homemaker, Mrs. Ulery was a member of Parkview Church of the Nazarene.
Mrs. Ulery’s husband was an abstract artist. Many of his unique creations adorned county signs, menus, advertisements and playhouse billboard. His recognizable curlicues figures and letters were much different than those works for which the Brown County artist colony was already known. His richly colored and symbolic abstract works were part of a genre known as "Cosmic art."
Shortly after the couple was married, they set out for California. It was there that Mr. Ulery became a well-known member of the community of abstract painters in Los Angeles. The Ulerys settled in the hills of Brown County in 1947.
Edna Badger
Edna Mae Badger, the sister of Sweetwater Trail resident Art Warren, died Saturday, November 17, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Georgetown Road, she was 76.
Born in Marion County May 17, 1925, she was the daughter of Harry and Elsie Lair Warren.
She and Ralph Edward Badger were married November 9, 1947. He survives.
A homemaker, Mrs. Badger was a member of Cathedral of Praise Church of God.
Edward Blaisdell
Edward Payson Blaisdell died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Brown County Health and Living Community. He was 93.
Born March 18, 1908, in Pontiac, Illinois, he was the son of Ray and Mary Frances (Ellinwood) Blaisdell.
He was graduated from Onarga Military School in Gillman, Illinois in 1926, and worked as a telephone lineman for his father’s company.
From 1928 until 1932, Mr. Blaisdell served with the US Marine Corps earning the rank of Corporal.
William Burton
Former Brown County resident Reverend William N. Burton died Monday, November 12, 2001, at Franklin United Methodist Community. A resident of that city, he was 86.
Born February 11, 1915, in Sullivan County, he was the son of Hamilton Newton and Elsie (Shields) Burton.
He married Patricia Ann Crews March 23, 1971. She survives.
Mr. Burton was graduated from Bruceville High School in 1933; Asbury College in Wilmore Kentucky in 1937; and Boston University School of Theology in 1940.
Cathy Delavega
Cathy A. Delavega, the mother of Trafalgar resident Jason Specht, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center. A resident of Bloomington, she was 45.
Born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, December 28, 1955, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Annette (Wall) Stakelin. Her father survives in Madison.
She married Enrique Delavega who survives in Bloomington.
Ruth Duke
Unionville resident Ruth E. Duke died Saturday, November 10, 2001, at the Brown County Health and Living Community. She was 75.
Born October 2, 1926, in Jay County, she was the daughter of Lester and Glenda Stone Bickel.
Graduated from Portland High School, Mrs. Duke had lived in Unionville for the past 15 years.
She Married Gene Duke in 1964, and he survives.
Myrtle Dunn
Nashville resident Myrtle C. Dunn died Saturday, November 17, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was 71.
Born in New Castle, Kentucky, September 23, 1930, she was the daughter of William and Lillie Plowman Brierly.
She was a former drug store clerk.
Mary L. Eastman
Freeman Ridge Road resident Mary Louise Eastman died Tuesday evening, November 13, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital. She was 74.
Mrs. Eastman was born June 7, 1927, in Fort Wayne to H. Frank Finfrock and Dorothy Rhoades.
She was married to Robert L. Eastman Sr. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Eastman had worked as a secretary at St. Joe’s Central School.
Clifford Grubb
Clifford David Grubb, the father of Nashville resident Diana J. Fleetwood, died at his Bloomington residence. He was 75.
Born in Monroe County October 4, 1926, he was the son of Arthur and Fannie Grubb. They both preceded him in death.
A US. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Wesleyan Church.
Mr. Grubb was retired as a journeyman mason for Weddle Brothers and Demshar Construction Company.
Charles Huesman
Charles Robert "Bob" Huesman, the father of Brown County sheriff Dan Huesman, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, in Shelbyville. He was 74.
Born June 20,1927, in Shelby-ville, he was the son of Walter Henry and Anna (Schoentrup) Huesman.
A life long resident of Shelbyville, he was graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1945.
Mr. Huesman was married to Gloria Wilson, who survives.
A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mr. Huesman was a claims representative for Yosemite Insurance Company for 35 years, retiring in 1986.
Aletha Justus
Aletha Lillian (Hale) Justus, the mother of Bear Creek Road resident Jack W. Justus, died Saturday, November 17, 2001. A resident of Indianapolis, she was 87.
Born in Sullivan County August 30, 1914, she was the daughter of Raymond and Bertha (Firebaugh) Hale.
She married William T. Justus, who preceded her in death.
A member of Tuxedo Park Baptist Church, Mrs. Justus was a clerk in the Marion County Assessor’s Office for 14 years, retiring in 1976.
Alice Lindenborg
Alice Jeanette (Winslow) Lindenborg, the stepmother of Brown County resident Jon M. Lindenborg, died Wednesday, November 7, 2001, at Franklin United Methodist Community. A resident of Franklin, she was 75.
Born May 15, 1926, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Donald and Dorothea (Halloway) Winslow.
A 1945 graduate of Warren Central High School, she attended Indiana University, where she studied chemistry and English literature.
She and George Clifford Lindenborg were married September 23, 1960, in Indianapolis. He died December 27, 1989.
