Karen Bowers
Karen Korte Bowers died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 53.
The daughter of Brown County residents Sarge and Connie (Hutchison) Korte, she married Thomas R. Bowers. He survives.
Mrs. Bowers was a homemaker.
Other survivors include two step-sons, Michael and Joseph Bowers; a step-daughter, Julie Bowers Lahr; a sister, Karol Burns; and six grandchildren.
Jacob Eirhart
Jacob Aaron Eirhart, the great-grandson of Morgantown resident Charleen Hoagland, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, after an automobile accident on State Road 44 in Johnson County.
The 11-year-old was a resident of Martinsville, and fifth-grade student at Poston Road Elementary School.
He was born February 15, 1991, in Mar-tinsville, the son of Charles N. Hoagland II of Martinsville, and Paula J. Eir-hart Hoagland, who died in the same accident.
A member of Martinsville Cub Scouts, Jacob enjoyed video games, reading and drawing.
Carolyn Guss
Former Belmont resident Carolyn Guss died Tuesday, March 26, 2002. A resident of Bloomington since 1995, she was 91.
Born June 11, 1910, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Edward M. and Mary Edna (Kealing) Guss.
A pioneer in the field of educational film classification and cataloging, Mrs. Guss held the title Profes-sor Emeritus from Indiana University. She served on the faculty in the School of Education and the staff of the audio visual center from 1942 until her retirement in 1975.
Prior to that, Mrs. Guss had taught English and Latin in high schools in Kingman and Amo from 1929 until 1942.
Paula Hoagland
Paula J. Hoagland, the sister of Brown County resident Ida Eirhart, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, after an automobile accident on State Road 44 in Johnson County. A resident of Martinsville, she was 29.
Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania September 4, 1972, she was the daughter of Wesley Eirhart of Indianapolis and Gloria Eirhart of Altoona.
She and Charles N. Hoagland II were married May 8, 1993, in Martinsville. He survives.
Graduated from Martins-ville High School in 1992, Mrs. Hoagland was employed at Weliever Pontiac auto dealership in Martinsville.
Tia Hoagland
Tia Dawn Hoagland, the great-granddaughter of Morgantown resident Charleen Hoagland, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, after an automobile accident on State Road 44 in Johnson County.
A second-grade student at Poston Road Elementary School, the eight-year-old lived in Martinsville.
She was born March 8, 1994, in Martinsville, the son of Charles N. Hoagland II of Martinsville, and Paula J. Eirhart Hoag-land, who died in the same accident.
Other survivors include paternal grandparents, Charles and Brenda Hoagland of Martinsville; paternal great-great-grandparents, Harvey and Mona Needler of Beech Grove; maternal grandmother, Gloria Eirhart of Altoona, Pennsylvania; maternal grandfather, Wesley Eirhart of Indianapolis; maternal step-grandmother, Teresa Freed of Martinsville; and maternal step-great-grandmother, Phyllis Cox of Martinsville.
James Pruitt
Brown County native James E. Pruitt died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Johnson Memorial Hospital. A resident of Trafalgar, he was 74.
Born March 10, 1928, in Brown County, he was the son of Chester I. and Maude Stella Walker Pruitt.
He and Jean Waltz were married October 4, 1947, in Nineveh. She survives.
Employed as a crane operator at Arvin Industries for 42 years, he retired in 1989.
Oliver Wilson
Brown County native Oliver R. Wilson died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Columbus Regional Hospital. A resident of Bartholomew County, he was 85.
Born August 30, 1916, in Brown County, he was the son of Harley E. and Lila Sinn Wilson.
He and Virginia R. Jean were married July 7, 1938. She survives.
A member of the Apostolic faith, Mr. Wilson retired as co-owner of Hoosier Tool and Die in 1981.
Nevada Wright
Nevada Wright, the sister of Nashville resident Lois F. Bowling, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at her home in Bartholomew County. She was 64.
Born January 15, 1938, in Calvin, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Hattie Robbins Thompson of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and the late James M. Thompson.
She and Claude Wright were married October 19, 1953. He survives.
A member of Berean Bible Church, Mrs. Wright was head cashier at Thrif-T-Mart for 10 years.
Mary Banister
Nashville native Mary E. Banister died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Columbus. A resident of that community since 1958, she was 63.
Born May 16, 1939, she was the daughter of L.R. and Beulah (Taggert) Crabtree, both preceding her in death.
She married G. David Banister March 7, 1958, in Nashville. He died October 4, 2001.
A 1957 graduate of Nashville High School, Ms. Banister was a member of Nashville Christian Church.
Kathleen Burns
Kathleen Burns, a Morgan County resident since 1945, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Morgan Hospital and Health Center in Martinsville. She was 78.
Born September 13, 1923, in Elwood, she was the daughter of Lamont Hoppel and Darlie (Lemons) Hoppel. Both preceded her in death.
She married Jarvis B. Burns May 4, 1946. He died March 25, 1999.
Mrs. Burns worked for many area businesses, including Homelawn Sanitarium, Nutter’s Menswear, Dale’s Jewelry, Johnson Music Company, Hayes Pharmacy and Indiana Bank and Trust.
George Haggard
Morgantown resident George Ralph Haggard died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Center in Beech Grove. He was 58.
Born September 30, 1943, in Franklin, he was the son of Clemous and Louise Dillman Haggard.
On February 16, 1963, he married Fran M. Gaines in Indianapolis. She survives.
Mr. Haggard was retired from AT&T as an air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic after 31 years, from 1964 to 1995.
Elzie Jarman
Grandview Ridge Road resident Elzie Jarman died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Brown County Health and Living Center. She was 83.
Born November 15, 1918, in Franklin, Kentucky, he was the son of John and Hattie Jarman.
He married Dagny F. Jarman, who preceded him in death in 1997.
Mr. Jarman was a freelance welder and also worked at Golden Foundry in Columbus for 17 years, retiring in 1982.
Bernadette Novak
Bernadette (Koller) Novak, mother of Nineveh resident Ronald Novak, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. A resident of Trafalgar, she was 71.
Born October 28, 1930, in South Haven, Michigan, she was the daughter of Mathias and Marguerite Mootz Koller.
She married Eugene Novak April 4, 1959, in South Haven. He survives.
She received a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Francis College in Joliet, Illinois, a master’s degree in special education from Indiana State University and a licensed practical nurse degree from Ivy Tech State College. She was past blood plasma director for Plascon Incorporated.
James Owens Sr.
James O. "Jimmy" Owens Sr., father of Story resident Tracy Ayers, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center. A resident of Seymour, he was 78.
Born in Seymour August 17, 1923, Mr. Owens was the son of William Sr. and Minnie Holland Owens.
He married Ann Bedel in 1949 in Seymour. She survives.
Mr. Owens retired from Abraham and Sons and was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Jessica Skirvin
Jessica Dawn Skirvin, granddaughter of Nashville resident Joretta Pasley Anderson, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at her Franklin home. She was 20.
Born May 12, 1982, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Monty and Janet Lynn Skirvin Anderson. They survive.
Ms. Skirvin was a homemaker and 2000 graduate of Edinburgh High School.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kayleigh Renee Hadley of Franklin; a sister, Julie Goforth of Indianapolis; a brother, Adam Anderson of Franklin; grandparents Gerald "Dolly" and Carolyn Jump Skirvin of Amity; and a great-grandfather, James Jump of Franklin.
Roxie Werden
Roxie P. (Pruitt) Werden, mother of Morgantown resident Myrtle Ratliff, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Greenwood. A resident of that city, she was 98.
She married Thomas Werden, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Werden was a core assembler for Stewart Warner for 25 years, retiring in 1971.
She was a member of Oak Park Baptist Church in Indianapolis.
