James E. Maxwell
August 7, 1918 - December 31, 2010
James E. Maxwell, 92, of Knightstown, died Dec. 31 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Knightstown, a son of the late Fred and Florence (Miner) Maxwell.
Mr. Maxwell attended Central School in Knightstown and later graduated from Knightstown High School. He attended Purdue University for one year, but was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Maxwell served as a supply sergeant at various stateside locations. He retired from Indiana Gas in 1982 after 25 years of service. Mr. Maxwell was a past member and past president of the Knightstown Kiwanis Club. A charter member of the Hoosier Gym Community Center of Knightstown, he also helped found the Knightstown High School Alumni Association.
Mr. Maxwell was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Knightstown, Knightstown American Legion Post 152 and a past member of the Knightstown Lions Club. Mr. Maxwell was an avid gardener and had a large annual garden, from which he often supplied free produce to local friends and families. Following retirement, he and his wife, Betty, traveled to Hawaii, visiting Pearl Harbor, Alaska and Las Vegas. Mr. Maxwell was known as someone concerned with ecology and conservation, and he enjoyed making bird houses, which he gave as gifts.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Mauck) Maxwell of Knightstown; a son, Jamie (wife, Nora) Maxwell of Knightstown; a daughter, Nancy (husband, Jim) Garrett of Anderson; four grandchildren, Jeff (wife, Kim) Maxwell, Julie Graham, Tomi (husband, Todd) White and Tim Maxwell; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Private burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation is noon until time of services on Jan. 5.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosier Gym Community Center of Knightstown.
Joyce A. Jones
May 21, l946 – December 30, 2010
Joyce A. Jones, 64, of Carthage, died on Dec. 30.
She was born May 21, l946, in Connersville, a daughter of the late Rollie and Juanita (Hittle) Wilson.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Rushville Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. She had worked at the Sportsman’s Bar for several years.
Survivors include two brothers, Rollie D. Wilson of Rushville and Larry Wilson of Indianapolis; a sister, Marie (husband Johnny) Koohns of Rushville; five nieces, Cindy (husband, Rob) Butler of Danville, Lynne (husband Richard) Lake of Richmond, Kendra (husband Jerry) Geis of Westfield, Tara (husband Rob) Eckart of Rushville, Niki LeFever of Columbia City; and two nephews, Larry Lane Wilson of Florida and Paul Wilson of Indianapolis. Several great-nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Jones, and her first husband, Weldon Wall.
A funeral service was held on Jan. 3 at Moster Mortuary in Rushville with Rev. Dena Vittorio officiating. Visitation was Jan. 2 at the mortuary. Burial was in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
Jennie Katherine Kissick
August 28, 1915 – December 31, 2010
Jennie Katherine Kissick, 95, of Greenfield, died on Dec. 31 at Hancock Regional Hospital.
She was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Rowan County, Ky., the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Arrenia (Purvis) Caldwell.
Mrs. Kissick retired from Brooks Foods in Mt. Summit in 1978. She was a member of Spiceland Church of the Nazarene and Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, needlework and quilting. She loved music and enjoyed playing guitar.
Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Couch of New Palestine, Marjorie (husband Herbert) Reeves of Knightstown, Kenneth (wife Kathy) Kissick of Mooresville, Barry Allen Kissick of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grand-daughter and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Francis Kissick; daughter, Joyce Kissick Brown; two sons, Bobby Ray and Billy Francis Kissick; brothers, Everett, Simpson, Dolphus and Allie Caldwell; and sisters, Mary Caldwell, Elvia Cochran, Eunice Prater and Grace Rawlings.
Services will be at 2 p. m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Pastors Mark Herbkersman and Allen Sutherland officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Springport. Calling was Jan. 4.

Bruce D. Gustin
April 17, 1951 – December 31, 2010
Bruce D. Gustin, 59, of rural Shirley, died Dec. 31 at Hancock Regional Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1951, in Shelbyville, the son of Lloyd and Jean (Clark) Gustin of Greenfield.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was employed at Lockheed Martin Co. in Indianapolis. He loved music and enjoyed playing guitar.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Brenda (Brooks) Gustin; two sons, Shon and Shane, both of Anchorage; one grandson, Douglas Bruce Gustin; one brother, Jeffery A. (wife Barbara) Gustin of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements will be made by Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel.
Virginia Mae Alfont
December 25, 1931 - January 9, 2011
Virginia Mae (Bennett) Alfont, 79, of Fortville, died Jan. 9.
She was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Hancock County, a daughter of the late Chester and Margaret (Savill) Bennett.
An Eden High School graduate, Mrs. Alfont served as a secretary at Ingalls Elementary School, and later at the Fortville Community Shopper. She was a member of Cyntheanne Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Kevin E. (wife, Gail) Alfont of Carthage; a daughter, Jana D. (husband, Dek) Sanborn of Fortville; four grandchildren, Stephanie Kirlin, Matthew (wife, Angela) Kirlin, Mark Gauzens and Rorie Sanborn; three great-grandchildren, Dillon Martin, Chase Martin and Gary Russell Head; a sister, Nancy Ayers of Noblesville; and a son-in-law, Joe Gauzens of Scottsdale, Ariz.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene M. Alfont; a daughter, Sara M. Gauzens; three brothers, Roy Wayne Bennett, Bertie L. Bennett and David Steven Bennett; a sister-in-law, Jane Bennett; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Ayers.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Cyntheanne Christian Church in Fishers. Burial will follow at Mendon Cemetery in Pendleton. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Seals Funeral Home in Fortville and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Jan. 13.

Naomi B. Jackson
August 30, 1923 – January 8, 2011
Naomi B. Jackson, 87, of Knightstown, died Jan. 8 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Haldeman, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Stella (Egan) Butler.
After graduating from Haldeman High School, Mrs. Jackson moved to the Knightstown area, where she met and married her husband. She later was manager for P. N. Hirsch in Knightstown and was a member of Knightstown Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband husband, Phillip M. Jackson of Knightstown; two daughters, Barbara Mofield of Knightstown and Denise (husband, Cliff) Stanley of Marion; a son, Wayne Jackson of Bloomington; grandchildren Kara (husband, Scott) Lukens of Knightstown, John Philip (wife, Megan) Stanley of Indianapolis, Faron (husband, Kris) Luce of Muncie, James Stanley of Marion; three great-grandchildren, Leatris Cline and Jackson Lukens of Knightstown and Stella Luce of Muncie; brothers John Paul Butler, Carl (wife, Ruth) Butler, Hayden Butler, Ray Butler and Harold (wife, Janet) Butler of Knightstown; sisters Letha Redmon of Greenfield, Charlene (husband, Paul) Jensen of Knightstown and Shelia (husband, Richard) Rawlings of Charlottesville; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Butler of Knightstown and Joyce Butler of Spiceland; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers Arnold, Leon and Richard Butler.
Funeral services were Jan. 12 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Richard Thayer and Anthony Darling officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was Jan. 11 at the funeral home.
Opal Marie Johnson
November 27, 1914 – January 5, 2011
Opal Marie (Shepherd) Johnson, 96, died Jan. 5 at her home in New Castle.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1914, in Dupont in Jennings County, a daughter of the late William Franklin and Nettie Brooks (Andres) Shepherd.
Formerly of the Ogden-Knightstown area, Ms. Johnson had lived in New Castle since 1985. She was a member of Ogden Methodist Church and worked at Stop 3 Truck Stop for several years. She enjoyed playing bingo and going to Rising Sun. Survivors include two children, Ethlyn Beth Applegate of New Castle and James A. (wife, Linda) Johnson of Greenfield; eight grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leta Stout of Wanamaker and Syrena Turner of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Wayne Johnson and Jerry L. Johnson; two sisters, Ruby Fisher and Mabel McGuire; four brothers, Arthur, Frank, Harley and Lloyd Shepherd; and a great-grandson, Ian Griffen.
Funeral services were Jan. 8 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin with Pastor Carolyn Stoten of Ogden Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed at South Lawn Cemetery in Dublin.
