Gertrude “Odell” Smith, 50, of Carthage, died April 26 in Champagne County, Ohio.
She was born Nov. 7, 1957, in Flemingsburg, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Lena (Moore) Kendall.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed spending time with her family, as well as scrapbooking and genealogical research.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Smith of Carthage; a son, Michael Smith of Carthage; a daughter, Kelly Smith of Carthage; special friends, Elizabeth Drake and Mark Durham; eight grandchildren, Tyler Jackson, Maddison Smith, Kaitlyn Jackson, Skyla Smith, Caiden Smith, Baylie Smith, Morgan Douglas and Jayden Durham; two sisters, Kathy (husband, Larry) Jenkins and Barbara (husband, Dean) Collins; two brothers, Jim and Scott Kendall; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kendall.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the funeral home.
Ether H. Hufford
Sept. 26, 1922 - April 21, 2008
Ether H. Hufford, 85, of Greenfield, formerly of Knightstown, died April 21 at Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Missouri, a daughter of the late Arthur and Vestie (Stanfill) Swafford.
Mrs. Hufford lived in Knightstown for many years. She married Robert Hufford on Feb. 15, 1999.
Survivors include a son, Dan Southerland of Greenfield; a daughter, Dana (husband, Paul) Dame of Greenfield; a brother, Eugene Swafford of Mountainview, Mo.; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a son; a granddaughter; one great-grandson; and 11 siblings.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the funeral home.
Edna Hunt
Feb. 2, 1916 – May 7, 2008
Edna Hunt, 92, of New Castle, died May 7 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
She was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Salt Lick, Ky., a daughter of Lacy and Grace (Purvis) Sorrell.
Mrs. Hunt was a Lewisville High School graduate. She and her late husband, Stewart, farmed for over 40 years. She was a member of Spiceland Friends Church and Spicy Bees Home Ec. Club. Mrs. Hunt was a volunteer at Henry County Memorial Hospital for 15 years.
Survivors include a son, Fred (wife, Tommie) Hunt of Spiceland; a daughter, Sharon Jones of Muncie; three grandchildren, Wendy (husband, Scott) Miers of Greenfield, Rachel (husband, Eric) Smith of New Castle and Mark (wife, Angie) LaBoyteaux of Muncie; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Rice of Mt. Sterling, Ky.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart; two brothers, Emette S. and Manuel Sorrell; and a sister, Stella Greene.
Funeral services were May 9 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor David Brock officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was May 9 prior to services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Spiceland Friends Church.
Francis Lucille Apple
Sept. 23, 1915 – May 8, 2008
Francis Lucille (Jones) Apple, 92, of Greenfield, died May 8 at Golden Years Brandywine Nursing Facilities in Greenfield.
She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Missouri, a daughter of the late William and Mary (Reasner) Jones.
Mrs. Apple retired from Eastern Hancock High School where she was a cafeteria cook. She was a member of Charlottesville Methodist Church and was an avid reader and a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Robert (wife, Jan) Apple of Markleville; a daughter, Dorothy (husband, Dave) of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Doug Williamson of Princeton, Diane Hiatt of Greenfield and Don Apple of Greenfield; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Apple; and two sisters, Mildred Powell and Dorothy Herrick.
Funeral services were May 13 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial followed in Asbury Cemetery in Morristown. Visitation was May 12 at the funeral home.
Margaret R. Love
Jan. 1, 1943 – May 8, 2008
Margaret R. Love, 65, of Greenfield, died May 8.
She was born Jan. 1, 1943, in Highland Park, Mich., a daughter of the late Frank V. and Ida Mary (Bent) Love.
A Scecina High School graduate, Mrs. Love served as an office manager at Infection Disease of Indianapolis. She also volunteered at Community Hospital and the Arthritis Foundation.
Survivors include five brothers, Arthur V. Love, John B. Love, E. David Love, Patrick J. Love and Paul R. Love; a sister, Irene Mack; 17 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis P. Love and James Michael Love.
Funeral services were private. Arrangements were handled by Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Amanda Clair Shank
July 4, 1957 – May 8, 2008
Amanda Clair (Kile) Shank, 50, of Indianapolis, formerly of Knightstown, died May 8 at her home.
She was born July 4, 1957, in Madison, a daughter of the late Dan and Betty Jean (Weisner) Kile.
Mrs. Shank was 1975 Brookville High School graduate and was a former member of Brookville United Methodist Church. She attended Knightstown schools while her father served as a Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation administrator. Mrs. Shank earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana State University.
Survivors include her husband, David Shank of Indianapolis; her mother, Betty Jean Kile of Brookville; a brother-in-law, Joe (wife, Vicki) Kile of Brookville; two nieces, Cassie Gartenman and Hallie Kile; a nephew, Dan Gartenman; a sister-in-law, Reva Grantham of Versailles, Ky.; and her mother-in-law, Martha Shank of Brookville.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Kitty (Kile) Gartenman; a niece, Jessie Kile; and her father-in-law, Paul Shank.
Funeral services were May 12 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home in Brookville with Rev. Christopher Millay officiating. Visitation was May 12 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
Lola Mae Porter

Lola Mae Porter, 5, of Carthage, died May 9 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.
She was born March 29, 1923, in Saybrook, Ill., a daughter of the late John and Marie (Conrad) Rasor.
Mrs. Porter lived in Carthage most of her life. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Alvie Porter of Greenfield; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Elmer Porter; a son, Kittrel “Kit” Porter; two brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services were May 14 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Robert Guillaume officiating. Burial followed at Carthage Cemetery. Visitation was May 13 at the funeral home.
