James P. Whitfield

James P. Whitfield, 82, of Carthage, died July 18.
He was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Carthage, a son of the late Henry and Essie (Cravens) Whitfield.
Mr. Whitfield was a 1943 Carthage High School graduate. He served in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he worked at Delco Remy in Anderson for 36 years before retiring. A former scout master for Carthage Troop 129, he also served as assistant scout master for Rushville Troop 23. Mr. Whitfield was also an active Mason and a member of the American Legion.
In addition, Mr. Whitfield was a member of First Christian Church in Clinton. He and his wife performed mission work throughout the United States, often constructing new buildings, including First Baptist Church in Knightstown. He enjoyed traveling, golf and gardening, and he always shared his produce with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Katie (Liebrandt) Whitfield; three children, Michael (wife, Dawn), David (wife, Denise) and Diana (husband, Dennis); two brothers, Kenneth and Leon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia (Liebrandt) Whitfield; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Beatrice Stacy-Bannister.
Funeral services and visitation were July 22 at Fritz Funeral Home in Clinton. An additional visitation was July 23 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown.
Lawrence Dilley
Dec. 16, 1952 – July 24, 2007
Lawrence “Larry” Dilley, 54, of Dunreith, died July 24 at his home.
He was born Dec. 16, 1952, in Lansing, Mich.
Mr. Dilley was employed at Irving Materials for the past 21 years.
Survivors include his wife, Tammi Dilley of Dunreith; a son, David (wife, Trista) Dilley of Greencastle; two daughters, Bobijo (husband, Korey) Warner of Ogden and Skye Simpson of Fortville; a granddaughter, Kelsey Dilley; two brothers, Fred (wife, Laura) Gettle of Prudenville, Mich., and Bob (wife, Joy) Pearson of Greenfield; five sisters, Carolann Amato of Grand Ledge, Mich., Ruth (husband, Gene) Brown of Greenfield, Della Pearson of Charlottesville, Vivian Pearson of Greenfield and Mary (husband, Tim) Brady of Indianapolis; a stepbrother, Donald Ray Pearson of Indianapolis; three stepsisters, Patty Latrel of Indianapolis, Loretta Foust of Rushville and Gene Goodwin of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Phil Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 27, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
James A. Sharp
Dec. 25, 1949 - June 26, 2007
James A. Sharp, 57, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Earl Sharp, died June 26 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was a Muncie Southside High School graduate and a graduate of Manchester College. He also attended the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Sharp was employed by the State of Indiana as a computer analyst at the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for 32 years.
Survivors include his parents.
Funeral services were July 28 at Fishers United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Shirley Brothers Thompson Road Chapel.
Kevin D. Hewson
Dec. 2, 1957 – Aug. 5, 2007
Kevin D. Hewson, 49, of Knightstown, died August 5 at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1957, in Greenfield, a son of Carl and Donna (VanDuyn) Hewson.
Mr. Hewson was a longtime Knightstown resident. He was an avid NASCAR fan and he enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Rick Hewson and Mick (wife, Sue) Hewson, both of Greenfield; a sister, Tammy Hewson of Greenfield; four stepchildren, Scott Burton of Dunreith, Aaron (wife, Jana) Burton of Knightstown, Jason Burton of Greenfield and Levi Burton of Dunreith; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his wife, Diana Hewson; a stepdaughter, Angela Burton; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services are at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel. Visitation is 5 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
S. William Brewer
Feb. 25, 1930 – Aug. 4, 2007
S. William “Bill” Brewer, 77, of Knightstown, died August 4 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
He was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Pleasantville, a son of the late Perly and Violet (Lynn) Brewer.
Mr. Brewer lived in Knightstown for 50 years, having moved here from Connersville. He married the former Bonita Wright on Oct. 14, 1950, and she survives. Mr. Brewer was a coach and teacher at the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home (ISSCH) from 1954-1959. He was a basketball coach and teacher at Connersville from 1959-1962. He served as superintendent at ISSCH from 1962-1990. After his retirement, Mr. Brewer worked as a consultant at Siemens and Performance Services. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from three different Indiana governors. He was also named a Kentucky Colonel. A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Brewer was a graduate of the University of Texas – El Paso, where he was an all-American basketball player. He received his masters degree in education from Ball State University. Mr. Brewer attended Knightstown United Methodist Church and was a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152, Knightstown Masonic Lodge, 40&8 and Anivicus.
Survivors include his wife, Bonita “Bonnie” of Knightstown; two daughters, Linda (husband, Arthur) Hegewald of Indianapolis and Lisa Brewer of Huntington Beach, Cal.; a granddaughter, Morgan Hegewald of Indianapolis; and a grandson, Spencer Hegewald of Indianapolis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, at the ISSCH chapel with Mervin Kilmer officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation was 2-8 p.m. August 7 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Memorial contributions may be made to ISSCH Memorial Foundation or the American Legion Post 152 Building Fund.
Bernard Evitt
Dec. 9, 1928 – Aug. 2, 2007
Bernard “Bernie” Evitt, 79, of rural Wilkinson, died August 2 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Scottland, Ill., a son of the late William and Ardath Evitt.
Mr. Evitt served as a machinist at Western Electric-AT&T-Lucent Technologies for 30 years before retiring. He attended Greenfield Church of Christ and operated an amateur radio (KD9DDB). Mr. Evitt was also an avid wood worker who enjoyed antique cars, steam engines and tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Kay A. Evitt of Wilkinson; two sons, Edward Evitt of Markleville and John (wife, Debbie) Evitt of Greenfield; a daughter, Mary (husband, Steve) Mosley of Cicero; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (wife, Jean) Evitt of Paris, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Steven Evitt; a sister, Madeline Taylor; and two brothers, Leon Evitt and Richard Lee Evitt.
Funeral services were August 7 at Greenfield Church of Christ with Rev. Pat McDaniel officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was August at Greenfield Church of Christ. Arrangements were handled by Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.
Glenda N. Browning
March 23, 1951 – Aug. 2, 2007
Glenda N. (White) Browning, 56, of Sulphur Springs, died August 2 in Sulphur Springs.
She was born March 23, 1951, in Kentucky, a daughter of the late Conway White and Viola Leach.
Mrs. Browning was a volunteer at Christian Center Rescue Ministries in Anderson. She was a former corrections officer at CIC in Pendleton. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. Along with cooking, Mrs. Browning also enjoyed arts and crafts. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Sebrena (husband, Andy) Lumpkin of Sulphur Springs; a son, Brian White of New Castle; two grandsons, Jacob Lumpkin of Sulphur Springs and Trevor Scott of New Castle; a granddaughter, Tristen White of Shirley; a brother, Bill (wife, Bonnie) McCarty of Sulphur Springs; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Wells.
Funeral services were August 6 at Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, in New Castle with Rev. Toby N. Lambert officiating. Burial followed in Green Hills Memory Gardens west of New Castle. Visitation was August 6 at the funeral home.
